Specification SANS 545 sets stringent requirements of performance for wooden doors.
Above all, it’s our legendary quality that makes TDM doors stand out above the rest. This is no idle boast! We have been certified by the SABS to standard SANS 545 – refer SABS mark scheme permit number Mrk 1160/2553, since 1989. Our quality management system is certified by SGS against standard ISO 9001:2008.

TDM started up with just R200 under the
name Pinewood Industries.
The business expanded and a small factory of 250m2 was built on half the plot at New
Germany. The workforce now grew to 12.
Pinewood Industries was incorporated as a (Pty) Ltd
Company.
Recognising a need in the market Pinewood Industries began specialising in doors.
The factory now doubled in size.
As the emphasis became solely on the manufacture of doors a name change was prompted
and TDM was born.
Staff grew to 260 and factory space grew to 5500 square metres. TDM entered into
the export market supplying doors to Germany, England,
France and Belgium.
This marked a record year for the company and TDM relocated to Pietermaritzburg with a 10-hectare site and
state of the art buildings and machinery.
TDM implemeted the ISO 9002 quality management system throughout the factory and
achieved SABS 545 and SABS 1460 certification becoming the only door manufacturer in the
country to carry the SABS mark.
Company developed engineered stiles and engineered panels that look and feel like solid timber but
have added strength that guarantees weather and moisture will not warp
or crack. Export expanded to United States and Australia.
Factory buildings expanded to cover 44000 square metres
when company production reached record levels.
TDM gained full control over the manufacturing process with state of the art computerised saw mill, kilns and a boiler. This meant the
development of a door from log to finish product was in TDM’s hands.
Marks 52 years of TDM supplying quality doors. Today TDM continues to deliver products of the
highest quality locally and internationally.

DOOR FRAMES
1. Measure the diagonals of the door frame to assess whether the opening is square and to determine how much will have to be taken off the door. Ideally there should be a maximum 5 mm clearance at the bottom and 3 mm clearance on the other three sides. If it is necessary to reduce the width, take equal amounts of not more than 6mm from the bottom and top of flush doors. To reduce the height of framed or panel doors, a reduction of up to 25 mm should be taken off the bottom only.
2. Before fitting door furniture, don't forget to paint or seal the top and bottom edges of the door after trimming to size, as well as all other areas where end grain is exposed. For glazed
doors, rebates and glazing beads must be painted prior to fitting glass, and a putty or mastic should be used between the glass and rebate wall
and glass and glazing bead.
3. Fit the door in the opening and wedge it in position.
4. Mark the hinge positions on the door edge with a pencil (for solid doors three hinges should be fitted). Remove the door and extend the marks onto the door edge, or door frame if necessary
5. Trace the outline of the hinge on the door and on the jamb with a pencil. Score the hinge outlines with a chisel.
6. Cut the recess into the door and jamb, making sure that the installed hinge is exactly flush with the edge of the door. The screw holes should be marked with a centre punch and drilled.
7. Cut out the hinge recesses. To prevent the door binding, make sure that the recesses are slightly deeper on the inside of the frame so that the hinge will not be completely closed when the door is closed. The recesses should be the same depth as the thickness of the hinge from the knuckle of the hinge. The
knuckle itself should project from the door frame and door. It is best to mark the depth of the hinges with a marking gauge in order to get the same depth for each of the hinges.
8. When the hinges have been correctly positioned they can be screwed in tightly.
9. Three hinges should be fitted to doors weighing more than 20 kg, and on all doors where large differences in humidity or temperature on opposing faces are to be expected, for example on bathrooms and airing cupboards.
Treatment
• Proper treatment of wooden doors is essential in our harsh South African climate. TDM Doors should be sealed on all 6 sides with a quality wood sealer immediately after delivery and prior to installation.
• Ideally 2 coats of sealer should be applied prior to installation and a final coat after fitment.
• If doors are to be painted, a universal sealer should be applied
as above to the 6 sides prior to painting the door.
Storage
• Once the door has been delivered, it should be properly stored flat on a level surface in a dry, well-ventilated area and not stored on edge or on end.
• Doors should be sufficiently protected from the elements to avoid spoilage. Avoid storing in direct sunlight.
• Doors should be stacked on bearers to spread the load.• Always handle with care so as not to scratch or mark the surface
or edge of the door.
Fitment
• Your doors can be fitted during or after building. Your builder will be able to advise you which is best for your requirements. Ensure that extreme care is taken should doors be fitted whilst building.
• All surfaces i.e. foundations, concrete floors and plastered walls must be dry when fitting the doors.
• Get your doors fitted by a qualified carpenter.• Make allowance for swelling and shrinking of doors due to
weather.• Select a good sealant which will minimise swelling and shrinkage.• A carpenter can make additional adjustments on the door should
swelling occur. This is not a fault on the door construction, but a natural occurance in timber. A maximum of 5 mm trim should
be allowed on all sides.
Maintenance
• TDM Doors require maintenance on a regular basis for protection against the elements and to prolong the life and beauty of the product.
• Use silicon or putty to seal spaces between beading and glass panes or any openings between walls/floors and joinery to prevent water from entering and gathering.
• Follow the Sealant manufacturer’s recommendations to treat your TDM doors at regular intervals.
• All 6 sides of the door should be painted/sealed for optimum protection.
