VisionLight rays reflected by an object enteryour eye. The transparent cornea (1)and lens (2) focus these light raysonto the back of the retina (3)to form an upside-downimage of the object. Nerve cellsin the retinachange thelight rays into nerve impulsesthat travelalong theoptic nerve (4)to the brain. At the back of thebrain, thevisual cortex (5)interprets the nerveimpulses and switchesthe image right-side up.

Chemical particles (1) from flowers, trees and other thingsin your environment are always floating around in the air. When you breathe in air through your nose, you also breathe in some of these particles. Once inside your nose, these particlesare moved by tiny hairs in the lining of your sinuses (2) up tospecial nerve endings (3) inthe olfactory bulb (4).The olfactory bulbdetects odors in the chemical particles and sends signals back to thebrain.

When you talk, airin your lungs (1) moves up yourwindpipe ortrachea (2) and rushes past yourvocal cords (3), causing them tovibrate. Yourvibrating cordsmake a sound. When the cordsare loose, the sound is low.As the cords tighten, the sound becomes higher. You can change the soundsyou make by movingyour jaws, lipsand tongue (4) .

Hearing Inner Ear

Outer EarSound waves enter the ear (1) andmove through the ear canal. (2)

Vibrations from the middle ear enterthe cochlea (7) and turn intoelectrical signals that travel along theauditory nerve (8) to the brain.

Middle EarSound waves push against the ear drum (3) andcause it to vibrate. Vibrations move through threetiny bones: the hammer or malleus (4), the anvil or incus (5) and the stirrup or stapes (6).
