DESCRIBE THE PRESENT AND ORIGINAL (It known) PHYSICAL APPEARANCE

It is believed that Scotia Iron Works, at the height of its operation (1870-1880), consisted of one engine house, a boiler house, a charcoal house, a casting house and a weighing house. (l-Jr. Robert L. Elgin, Box 36%, St. James, Missouri. November 11, 1968.)

Interviewed

Presently only the furnace stack is standing. Stack is con structed of native limestone blocks, is 35 feet wide at the base, and approximately IjO feet high. There are two openings in the base of the stack, one on the south (front) side, and one on the west side. A hot blast fired the furnace through the west side opening, commonly called the "Tuyere Arch". The molten iron flowed from the front (south) opening, "cast ing arch", of the stack to the casting bed. The furnace stack stands at the foot of a ridge, north and east of the structure. Stone foundations of presently undetermined buildings are located northeast of the furnace stack. Slag heap located east of the furnace stack.

Furnace is in fair condition. Stone blocks in the south and east walls are crumbling. The base of the furnace will be within the flood control pool area of the proposed I-feramec Park Reservoir. (See attached map)

The ore pit, Scotia Mine No. 1, is located 1,000 feet north west of the furnace stack. A dry creek bed exists between the stack and the ore pit. Ore pit is 300 feet long, 200 feet wide, and 20-£0 feet deep. Access to the pit is on the northeast side.

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE (Include Personages, Dates, Ev-mts, Etc.)

The Scotia Iron Furnace Stack is important remaining evidence of the nineteenth century iron industry in Missouri.

The Scotia Iron Furnace was built in 1870 by John G. Scott, a pioneer in iron production in Missouri, in association with Thomas Howard, Robert Anderson, and Anvil James. Anvil James was the son of Thomas James who founded I-krarnec Iron Works in Phelps County.

In its operative years, the Scotia Iron Works was located north of Scotia, Missouri. Three hundred of the town's $00 people were employed by the Scotia Iron Company. (l-jjn.es, Jletals and Arts, October 8, 187!;, p. 2lj5.) The furnace was steam powered and therefore not dependent upon an abundant water supply. The furnace was located near the ore, timber, and limestone supplies making possible a less costly and more efficient operation. The average capacity of the furnace was 20 tons of pig iron per day. (P^lla Herald, January 12, 1871.)

The pig iron produced by the Scotia Furnace was hauled six miles to Leasburg and then shipped by rail to St. Louis for the manufacture of iron products. I-bst of the Scotia iron was used in the manufacture of agricultural equipment and water pipes. (Mines, Metals and Arts, October 8, 187)4, p. 2145.) ————————————————

In 1880 the Scotia Iron Works machinery was moved to Dent County because of depleted ore supplies and because of dis agreement among the owners. The machinery was used to build a similar -hot blast furnace appropriately called the Nova Scotia Furnace. This snielter was located in an area thickly strewn with boulders of specular hematite. (Grawe, Pyrites Deposites of Missouri, p. 305.) In 1888 the furnace equip- raent was moved to Paducah, Kentucky.
