This issue shows a little of the diverse work done by ABRA-FATI and our members towards developing the market from a perspective of growth, innovation, sustainability, quality improvement, and value addition to coatings. The crisis experienced over the past few years, which reached its peak in 2016, has not kept us from moving forward with our efforts in that regard. On the contrary, the tough situation endured by the industry has been a driver for those activities. One of the concrete results of that work was the creation of the Quality Paint Showroom by ABRAFATI, which is going to be one of the attractions at Feicon Batimat 2017. At the same time as we open a space for paint manufacturers to showcase their best at a well-established event, we put the theme of deco-rative paint quality in the limelight for a qualified audience. Also to be intro-duced at that event is another important accomplishment: the 2017 edition of the book Tintas Imobiliárias de Qualidade – Livro de Rótulos da ABRAFATI (“Quality Decorative Paints – Book of Labels by ABRAFATI”).Come the second half, it will be time for ABRAFATI 2017, on whose importance I don’t need to elaborate. Suffice it to recall the contribution the trade show has been making from a standpoint of technological development, incorporation of sustainability into industry strategies, networking and business generation. At both of the aforementioned events, attendees will be able to view paths and trends, and promising opportunities will present themselves. Accordingly, they must be already on the schedule of everybody engaged in the industry.

QUALITY PAINT SHOWROOM BY ABRAFATI: A SPACE FOR SHOWING THE INDUSTRY’S STRENGTH

Cover Story

At this year’s edition of Brazil’s leading construction trade show, an exclusive space will be set aside for the Industry-specific Quality Program (PSQ, the initials in Portuguese) for Decorative Paints. It’s going to be the stage for the Quality Paint Showroom by ABRAFATI, a joint initiative between our Association and Reed Exhibitions Alcantara Machado. There, from April 4 to 8, PSQ-certified manufacturers will have the opportunity to launch new products and showcase the highlights of their product ranges, at the same time as lectures are presented contemplating the interests of the different audi-ences who attend the trade show. The program also comprises demonstrations of application methods and the various uses of decorative paints. In addition, the new edition of the Book of Labels by ABRAFATI will be released. There are three main ideas behind this initiative. The first is to better exploit the representativeness of the PSQ by imparting to it —as well as to participating manufacturers and their products— even more visibility among key audiences. The second is to address the need for having newly launched and unique products from the decorative paint industry on display once again at an event with great national impact. Providing an overview of the circumstances, as an upswing is expected both in the economy and in sales of building materials, is the third element bolstering the Showroom, as well as Feicon Batimat in general.“The Quality Paint Showroom by ABRAFATI is going to be a convergence point for all different publics interested in paints,” remarks ABRAFATI’s executive president Dilson Ferreira. “It’s going beyond that, as it will serve as a showcase for high-quality products and the benefits they provide, strengthening the image of our industry as an innovative, ethical and responsible one,” he adds.

The release of the new version of the most comprehensive directory of paints that are recognized for their quality is going to be one of the special attractions at the Quality Paint Showroom by ABRAFATI. It’s the 2017 edition of Tintas Imobiliárias de

Qualidade – Livro de Rótulos da ABRAFATI (“Quality Decorative Paints – Book of Labels by ABRAFATI”), a piece of literature that has firmly established itself as a source of reference for retail professionals and anyone intending to buy or recommend decorative paint products. The big innovation in this edition is the fact that it has been produced in the form of an app, which adds to the website version at www.tintasimobiliarias.com.br and the print version. In addition to being easy to use, with browsing capabilities adaptable to the type of user and their interests, the app (as well as the website) allows for real-time content updates whenever necessary. The book shows over 800 products from 35 manufacturers for finishing walls, wood, metal and other surfaces, as well as complements (such as acrylic compounds, sealants and primers, among others). For each of those items, the book provides an image of its packaging and a description of its main properties (packaging type, yield, application method, colors, finish, dilution method, and drying time).“The new edition reflects the ongoing development of the paint and coat-ings industry and the investments made in technological innovation and improvements, which result in a frequent launching of products that are more advanced and feature new functionalities,” says Gisele Bonfim, manager of Technical and Environmental Affairs at ABRAFATI.“The goal with which the Book of Labels was originally conceived has been maintained: to encourage the choice of recognized quality paints that are up to technical standards as a benefit for users. I should point out that the book contributes to adding value to the brands participating in the Industry-specific Quality Program for Decorative Paints,” Gisele Bonfim concludes.

Industry expects sales to exceed GDP by 1 to 2 percent after three consecutive years of negative results

FOR 2017, EXPECTATION IS FOR GROWTHThe paint and coatings industry expects 2017 to be better but still difficult year. Existing pos-itive signs, government measures to stimulate the economy and actions undertaken by the industry itself provide the basis for that ex-pectation. However, the situation does not yet allow for a very optimistic outlook.

“We expect a slight growth in sales, and we estimate it at 1 to 2 percent above the GDP. Such a performance, however, depends on how the country’s political and economic situation will evolve,” says Dilson Ferreira, executive president at ABRAFATI. One of the reasons for the industry’s increased confidence is the position taken by the federal government on building and construction. “We also anticipate a moderate pick-up in sales of various products that are painted — such as vehicles and the most varied of consumer goods. Actions in connec-tion with infrastructure are also expected to take off,” Dilson Ferreira assesses. Another action front he highlights are urban improvement works like those being carried out in São Paulo. Furthermore, there is one additional factor to stimulate an upturn in business this year: ABRAFATI 2017.2016 ResultsIn 2016, sales displayed the steepest fall in their history, according to data

from ABRAFATI. At the close of the year, the sold volume was 7.1-percent lower than that for 2015. That result was even more negative given that sales already had fallen in 2015 and 2014. By comparison to 2013, sales de-creased by 200 million liters. The explanation for such result is linked with the strong economic downturn the country has expe-rienced.

ABRAFATI 2017

Major companies and leading profession-als engaged in the paint and coatings in-dustry are already on the countdown to ABRAFATI 2017, which is taking place on October 3 through 5 at a new venue: São Paulo Expo. There are high expectations for the trade

show, which are magnified by the existing confidence in its role of creating a favor-able environment for business and innovation, thereby opening new opportunities and representing a vigorous incentive for the search for innovative and sustainable solutions, which enables further value addition to paints and coatings.“The presence of a significant set of suppliers is assured, and they will be intro-ducing their latest developments and ready to discuss solutions to the demands from paint manufacturers in connection with innovation, sustainability and perfor-mance,” says Telma Florêncio, director of Corporate Events at ABRAFATI. At the Congress, at the same time, the most reputable of experts will be demon-strating the most advanced of new developments. “With the innovations on display at the Exhibition and the papers presented by researchers, we can confi-dently state that the most comprehensive portfolio of innovations are going to be available for manufacturers to assess them and later incorporate them into their facilities in furtherance of development in the industry,” Telma adds.Because it is a professional exhibition that favors networking and opportunity, all key suppliers are going to be there, as they know they will be able to showcase

their points of difference and potential to paint manufacturers based in Brazil and Latin America. The climate, for the most part, is one of excite-ment about ABRAFATI 2017 and the prospects that it brings. Among the highlights are the potential of the Brazilian and Latin American markets and the opportunity to impart great visibility to featured brands and launches and to introduce technical breakthroughs.

Professionals interested in present-ing papers at the 15th International Coatings Congress can already submit them for assessment by the Science Committee for the event, which is go-ing to place on October 3 through 5.The Congress has long stood out for relying on the presence of leading ex-perts from the world over representing both the industry and the academia, comprising a rich program that contemplates cutting-edge research efforts, innovations and recent developments in connection with paints and coatings in the most varied of respects. Key themes like performance, sustainability, functionalities and ease of application will be in the spotlight as part of the trade show’s overall concept of adding value to paints and coatings. That involves presentations on new ideas and solutions to issues relating to raw materials, production processes, customer service, waste reuse, and product life spans, among countless other existing improvement opportunities. To have their papers added to the lecture program and the Poster Session, researchers must each send an abstract for assessment and fill out a form with their information.“Based on what has been happening over the years, we expect to receive a good number of high-level technical studies that must be original and relevant, and also able to provide answers to the demands from consumers and the various markets served by our industry,” says Telma Florêncio, director of Corporate Events at ABRAFATI.

General News

Three groups of researchers related to Brazilian universities were honored by the traditional ABRAFATI Coatings Science Awards. They presented very consistent studies from a technical viewpoint, which highlighted their concern with sustain-ability and the originality of their approach. “Once again, high-quality and highly relevant studies were registered, showing that there’s a great many people in Brazil conducting studies and research efforts

relating to paints and coatings. The purpose of the Awards, which is to stimulate these activities, is being thoroughly fulfilled, with a direct impact on scientific and technological development in our industry,” says ABRAFATI’s execu-tive president Dilson Ferreira.

INNOVATIVE RESEARCHES RECEIVE RECOGNITION

Since January, ABRAFATI has partnered the Global Alliance to Eliminate Lead Paint, an initiative conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).Previously, the Association already supported that program indirectly, as is a member of the International Paint and Printing Ink Council (IPPIC), one of the first entities to make its adherence to the program official. “We’ve decided to demon-strate more clearly this commitment, to achieve the goals set by the Alliance: preventing child exposure to lead-containing paints and minimizing occupation exposure to lead paints,” says ABRAFATI executive president Dilson Ferreira. Brazil’s successful experience with the process of eliminating lead from decorative paints was highlighted in the application for adherence to the ini-tiative. The document also stated that such experience has been considered exemplary by the IPPIC, thus leading it to be presented in other Latin Amer-ican countries. In late 2016, the first two seminars on that experience were held in the cities of Medellin and Bogota, Colombia, with a massive turnout, comprising paint and coatings manufacturers and their suppliers, as well as non-government organizations.
