The NEU/NOW LIVE Festivals in 2011 and 2012 are realised through collaborative activities
developed in the framework of a grant from the Cultural Programme of the European Commission for
a project named NE©XT (New European Creative Talent).
The Faculty of Arts, University of Winchester is coordinator of the NE©XT project. Partners in the
coordination of the project are ELIA-European League of Institutes of the Arts, Bergen Academy of
Art and Design, ESMAE-School of Music and Performing Arts, Porto Polytechnic and the Estonian
Academy of Music and Theatre.

After Vilnius in 2009, Nantes in 2010
and Tallinn in 2011, ELIA is very
proud to present the fourth edition
of the NEU/NOW LIVE Festival 2012
in Porto!
The NEU/NOW Festival is an annual
innovative international platform for
highly talented graduating artists (or
those who have recently graduated)
coming out of Higher Arts Education
Institutions and Universities across
Europe and beyond. The Festival
features the most excellent new
artists entering the professional arts
arenas and is an international show-
case for emerging creative talent.
Through the Festival artists are given
a platform to present themselves to a
wider international audience within a
professional arts context.
This year 32 projects from 18 coun-
tries are presented in the NEU/NOW
LIVE Festival, representing all art
disciplines. The Artistic Directors
curated the NEU/NOW LIVE Festival,
advised on the selection by an inter-
national jury of experts.
NEU/NOW LIVE 2012
NEU/NOW is organised by ELIA
– European League of Institutes
of the Arts, the primary independ-
ent network of major higher arts
education institutions. With its 300
member institutions in 47 countries,
ELIA promotes dialogue, mobility
and research, shares best practice,
and advocates for the importance
of the arts and arts education in our
societies. With the NEU/NOW online
and LIVE Festival ELIA taps into the
potential of over 300,000 art students
representing all art disciplines.
Although NEU/NOW is still in its pilot
phase, it receives considerable atten-
tion from press and the public with
4500 visitors during the 4 days of the
LIVE Festival in 2011 and 25,000 hits
a day for the online Festival.
ELIA decided to combine NEU/NOW
LIVE 2012 with a Teachers’ Academy
that will bring over 100 art teachers
from all over the world together in
workshops and presentations. The
NEU/NOW LIVE Festival is interwoven
with the Teachers’ Academy pro-
gramme so as to generate critical and
informative discussions about the
Festival artworks.
The NEU/NOW 2012 edition is partly
organised in the frame of the project
NE©XT– New European Creative Tal-
ent, which is supported by the Euro-
pean Commission and coordinated
by the University of Winchester.
In the future ELIA will further develop
NEU/NOW into a trendsetting and
dynamic platform that promotes
artistic excellence – a festival where
producers and curators can see and
discuss the innovative, high quality
projects emerging from art schools
from all over Europe. The 2013 edition
of NEU/NOW LIVE will take place in
Nantes, France.
We are very proud that ESMAE
School of Music and Performing Arts,
Porto Polytechnic, is the key partner
in hosting NEU/NOW LIVE and we
are grateful to ESMAE for making
NEU/NOW LIVE Porto possible. Enjoy
NEU/NOW LIVE 2012, enjoy Porto!

Executive Director ELIA
Depois de Vilnius em 2009, Nantes
em 2010 e Tallinn em 2011, a ELIA
tem muito orgulho em apresentar a
quarta edição do Festival NEU/NOW
LIVE 2012 no Porto!
O Festival NEU/NOW é uma plata-
forma internacional inovadora, que
tem lugar anualmente para artistas
altamente talentosos a terminar a sua
licenciatura (ou para aqueles que o te-
nham feito recentemente) em Escolas
Superiores de Artes ou Universidades
por toda a Europa e mais além. O
Festival apresenta novos artistas de
excelência, que estão agora a entrar
na arena das artes profissionais, e
é um mostruário internacional para
talento criativo emergente. Através
do Festival é dado aos artistas uma
plataforma para se apresentarem a um
público internacional mais lato, dentro
do contexto profissional das artes.
No Festival NEU/NOW LIVE deste ano
são apresentados 32 projetos de 18
países, representando todas as disci-
plinas das artes. Os diretores artísticos
que fizeram a curadoria do Festival
NEU/NOW LIVE 2012
NEU/NOW aconselharam-se junto de
um painel de júris internacional para
realizar a seleção.
O NEU/NOW é organizado pela ELIA –
European League of Institutes of the
Arts (Liga Europeia dos Institutos das
Artes), a rede primária e independente
das maiores instituições de educação
para as belas artes. Contando como
membros com 300 instituições em
47 países, a ELIA promove o diálogo,
a mobilidade e a pesquisa, partilha
boas-práticas e advoga a importância
que as artes e a educação para as
artes detêm na nossa sociedade. Com
o NEU/NOW a funcionar na internet
e com o LIVE Festival, a ELIA explora
o potencial de mais de 300,000
estudantes de artes que representam
todas as disciplinas artísticas.
Apesar do NEU/NOW ainda estar na
sua fase piloto, recebe uma atenção
considerável da imprensa e do
público, tendo tido 4500 visitantes
durante os 4 dias do Live Festival em
2011 e 25,000 acessos por dia para
o Festival online.
A ELIA decidiu combinar o NEU/NOW
LIVE 2012 com uma Academia de
Professores que irá trazer mais de
100 professores de artes de todas
as partes do mundo para os juntar
em workshops e apresentações. O
Festival NEU/NOW Live está interli-
gado com o programa da Academia
de Professores para gerar discussões
críticas e informativas sobre as obras
apresentadas no Festival.
A edição de 2012 do NEU/NOW é
parcialmente organizada na estrutura
do projeto NE©XT– New European
Creative Talent (Novo Talento Criativo
Europeu), suportado pela Comissão
Europeia e coordenado pela University
of Winchester.
No futuro a ELIA irá desenvolver mais
o NEU/NOW, de forma a transformá-
-lo numa plataforma dinâmica e
criadora de tendências, que promova
a excelência artística - um festival
onde produtores e curadores possam
ver e discutir os projetos inovadores e
de alta qualidade que estejam a surgir
das escolas de artes espalhadas por
toda a Europa. A edição de 2013
do NEU/NOW LIVE irá ter lugar em
Nantes, França.
Temos também muito orgulho que a
ESMAE, Escola Superior de Música
e Artes do Espetáculo, do Instituto
Politécnico do Porto, seja o parceiro-
-chave na receção do NEU/NOW
LIVE e estamos gratos ao ESMAE
por tornar o NEU/NOW LIVE Porto
possível. Apreciem o NEU/NOW LIVE
2012, apreciem o Porto!

Work presented in the NEU/NOW
LIVE Festival undergoes a rigor-
ous selection process. In the first
instance, the artists (those about to
graduate or who have recently gradu-
ated) are nominated by their own
institution as emergent artists capa-
ble of producing work of the highest
quality on a national level. Secondly,
each nomination is carefully scruti-
nised and placed in order of merit by
an international panel of judges (three
judges for each of the five discipline
categories). Finally, as the two Artistic
Directors of the NEU/NOW Festival,
we lead the process of both confirm-
ing the total number of works to be
included in the online festival (to be
shown on www.neunow.com) and
selecting from within this body of
work the individual projects to be
presented in the LIVE Festival.
In curating work for the LIVE Festival,
we select against a range of attrib-
utes. We look for work of the very
highest artistic quality that can also
be shown to its best advantage in the
venues and galleries that we have
available to us. Here in Porto, we are
fortunate to have access to a range
Festival in Porto demonstrates that
this emerging generation of artists
are as strongly committed to social
values as they are to artistic ones.
To foreground this we have selected
work that, in addition to exhibiting
its intrinsic aesthetic qualities, is
also concerned with issues such as
environmental sustainability, social
reform and political awareness. As
visitors and audiences, you will be
able to engage with projects that
critically explore dialogues between
artistic practices and science, as well
as with those that focus more on the
discourses of social life and relations
and on society at large.
We believe that the NEU/NOW LIVE
Festival in Porto will attract and en-
gage you with a wide range of work
of the highest quality, produced by
an emerging generation of young
international artists. We hope that –
in addition to reaching those of you
who are regular attendees at arts
exhibitions and performances – the
range of work that we have selected
will also connect with individuals
and groups who share the individual
concerns that these young artists are
exploring through their work.
of excellent established arts spaces –
which have enabled us to draw freely
from the reservoir of works already
selected for the online festival. The
attributes that we look for go much
further than simply aesthetics and
compatibility with the venues, howev-
er. We are also mindful of the specific
qualities of each work and the extent
to which it is likely to engage the
interest of the public in the host city.
Our selection is based as much on
the ideas, concepts and intentions
that shape the work as on its aes-
thetic qualities or the excellence of
the craft skills it embodies.
All the disciplines that the Festival
encompasses – visual arts, design,
performing arts, film, and music and
sound are part of the creative indus-
tries sector. In the context of austerity
measures and shrinking economies
across Europe, the creative indus-
tries remain one of the few areas of
dynamic and significant economic
growth. While it is important to con-
tinually make the economic case for
the arts, the arts also add significant
value to our society in many other
ways. Our selection for the LIVE

As curators we are also concerned
with the possibilities that interdiscipli-
nary platforms encourage. The NEU/
NOW LIVE Festival in Porto offers a
diverse range of ambitious projects
and diversity can be seen as a dis-
tinctive characteristic in international
contemporary arts arenas. So it is
clear that these graduates are in
dialogue with contemporary art fields
and ably demonstrate their individual
approaches to understanding, chal-
lenging and participating in the
international contemporary arts world
here, in the city of Porto, at the NEU/
NOW LIVE Festival.
Professor Anthony Dean
Artistic Director (Dean of Faculty of
Arts, University of Winchester, UK)
Paula Crabtree
Artistic Director (Rector at Bergen
Academy of Art and Design, Norway)
O trabalho apresentado no Festi-
val NEU/NOW LIVE é submetido a
um processo de seleção rigoroso.
Em primeira instância, os artistas
(aqueles que estão quase a terminar
a licenciatura ou que a terminaram
recentemente) são nomeados pela
sua própria instituição como artistas
emergentes capazes de produzir tra-
balho da mais alta qualidade a nível
nacional. Em segundo lugar, cada
nomeação é cuidadosamente escru-
tinada por um painel de juízes inter-
nacionais (três juízes para cada uma
das cinco categorias). Finalmente,
com os dois Diretores Artísticos do
Festival NEU/NOW, lideramos os pro-
cessos de confirmação do número
total de trabalhos a ser incluídos no
festival online (para serem exibidos
em www.neunow.com) e selecionar,
deste conjunto de obras, os projetos
individuais que serão apresentados
no Festival LIVE.
Ao fazer a curadoria para o Festival
LIVE, selecionamos tendo em conta
um leque de atributos. Procuramos
trabalho da mais alta qualidade artís-
tica que possa ser exposto de uma
forma que o enobreça nos eventos
e galerias que nos foram disponibi-
lizados. Aqui no Porto somos afor-
tunados por ter acesso a uma série
de espaços artísticos excelentes e
estabelecidos - o que nos permitiu
escolher livremente do conjunto de
trabalhos já selecionados para o
festival online.
Contudo, os atributos que procura-
mos ultrapassam de longe a simples
estética e compatibilidade com os
eventos.
A nossa
escolha é baseada quer nas ideias,
conceitos e intenções que moldam a
obra, quer nas suas qualidades esté-
ticas ou na excelência da habilidade
técnica que incorpora.
Todas as áreas abrangidas pelo
Festival - artes visuais, design, artes
performativas, cinema e música e
som, fazem parte do setor das in-
dústrias criativas. Num contexto que
envolve medidas de austeridade e
economias em recessão por toda a
Europa, as indústrias criativas perma-
necem como uma das poucas áreas
com um crescimento económico
dinâmico e significativo. Enquanto
ainda é importante criar continua-
mente um contexto económico para
as artes, estas também acrescentam
um valor significativo à nossa so-
ciedade de muitas outras formas. A
nossa escolha para o Festival LIVE no
Porto demonstra que esta geração
emergente de artistas está tão em-
penhada nos valores sociais como
estão com os artísticos. Para enqua-
drar este fato selecionámos obras
que, para além de exibirem as suas
qualidades estéticas intrínsecas, tam-
bém demonstram preocupação com
temas como sustentabilidade am-
biental, reformas sociais e consciên-
cia política. Como visitantes e público
terão oportunidade de interagir com
projetos que exploram criticamente
os diálogos entre práticas artísticas e
ciência, bem como com aqueles que
se focam mais nos discursos da vida
social e nas relações humanas e na
sociedade em geral.
Acreditamos que o Festival NEU/
NOW no Porto irá atrair e captar a
sua atenção com a oferta variada de
obras da maior qualidade, produzi-
das por uma geração emergente de
jovens artistas internacionais. Espe-
ramos que, para além de chegarmos
aqueles entre vós que frequentam
regularmente exposições de arte e
performances, o alcance das obras
que selecionámos também estabele-
ça ligações com indivíduos e grupos
que partilhem as mesmas preocupa-
ções que estes jovens artistas explo-
ram através do seu trabalho.
Como curadores também estamos
interessados nas possibilidades que
as plataformas interdisciplinares
encorajam. O Festival NEU/NOW
LIVE no Porto oferece uma oferta di-
versificada de projetos ambiciosos, e
esta diversidade pode ser vista como
uma caraterística distinta nas arenas
internacionais de arte contemporâ-
nea. Assim, torna-se claro que estes
licenciados estão em diálogo com o
campo das artes contemporâneas
e demonstram habilmente as suas
abordagens individuais para compre-
ender, desafiar e participar no mundo
internacional das artes contempo-
râneas aqui, na cidade do Porto, no
Festival NEU/NOW LIVE.

Caros amigos, artistas e convidados,
Sejam muito bem-vindos ao NEU/NOW
2012 – PORTO.
Esta pequena nota de acolhimento é
para vos dar conta do nosso conten-
tamento e orgulho em receber esta
edição do FESTIVAL. Estou certo que
o Porto e as instituições que connosco
colaboram na receção a esta 4ª Edição
do NEU/NOW vos irão receber de
no Turístico Europeu.
Acreditamos que a cultura e a arte
fazem parte indispensável de uma
cidade cosmopolita, estamos
certos que esta vossa presença, a
originalidade dos vossos trabalhos, e
o vislumbrar de futuros que nos apre-
sentais, nos irão ajudar atravessar
este deserto da “Crise”, que de tão
falada,de algum modo nos atemoriza.
Em tempos difíceis, é bom estar
rodeado de amigos, em contraponto
à omnipresença dos discursos dos
“mercados”, saibamos consolidar as
nossas parcerias e cumplicidades, na
certeza que da arte virá alguma re-
denção, e alegria para estes tempos
mais negros que vivemos.
Saibamos pela nossa arte, afirmar
que o futuro é agora.

Dear friends, artists and guests,
Welcome to NEU/NOW 2012 – Porto.
The purpose of this little welcoming
note is to express our pleasure and
great pride in hosting this edition of
the NEU/NOW LIVE Festival. I am
certain that Porto, and the institutions
collaborating with us in the reception
of the 4th Edition of NEU/NOW, will
receive you all with open arms.
Porto is a city of bridges, open to the
world, and has been affirming and
consolidating its position as a tourist
destination, this year being elected
Best European Destination by a jury
of consumer associations.
We believe that culture and art are an
indispensable part of any cosmo-
politan city, and we are certain that
your presence, the originality of your
works, and the glimpses of the future
that you are now presenting, will
help us cross this desert of “Crisis”
which, being widely and strenuously
discussed, somehow frightens us.
In hard times, it’s good to be sur-
rounded by friends, so in counter-
point to the omnipresence of talk
about the “market”, let us consolidate
our artistic partnerships, being
certain that from art some redemp-
tion shall arise, and also joy for these
darker times in which we’re living.
Let us know how to assert, by our art,
that the future is now.

My experience with the festival was totally
unique; it brought together talented artists
from all across Europe and blended their
different approaches in a challenging way.
It helped me grow as an artist, putting me
in contact with the upcoming generation of
artists, and made me want to improve my
technique and to experiment – even more
than I had before – with other means of
expression. Long story short, NEU/NOW
is one of the few festivals in Europe that
creates these incredible opportunities for
emerging art-makers and young art lovers.

I made a collaborative work with the Aus-
trian artist Richard Schwarz after we got
to know each other during the NEU/NOW
LIVE Festival 2011. What I liked particularly
about the event was the fact that there
were a bunch of European graduates at the
very beginning of their lives as artists. Even
though we were very different due to our
varied cultural and academic backgrounds,
we all shared the expectations and fears
and excitement that connects young crea-
tives. And besides, we had a great time!

The performances that happened in the
gallery spaces at NEU/NOW were powerful
experiences for me; the relationship with
the audience, with the space, and with the
other works exhibited was unique.
The main thing I had in common with the
other artists was a sense of creativity and
dynamism, and the shared question of
where our various practices fit into the con-
temporary art field. The other participants
seemed as enthusiastic as I was.
I have learned from the festival that our
work doesn’t belong to a single artistic
discipline, but to art in general. For that
I am very thankful to the curators of the
festival, who blurred the borders between
categories. I’ve kept in contact with some
participants, sharing ideas on respective or
collaborative projects – and maybe there
will be concrete projects at some point!

Presenting in Tallinn was a tremendous
opportunity to show my work abroad, and
to thus confront it with new perspectives

moment of exchange and meeting. NEU/

Being a part of the NEU/NOW Festival gave
me some extra credibility as a professional
performing artist. It was a great recognition
of my piece.
The jury’s written comments about my
work helped when applying to other
festivals, and the experience gave me
more confidence in my professional life as
a choreographer and performer. It was a
great stepping stone as an emerging artist
fresh out of university.
I have remained in close contact with a few
of the artists from the festival, and we’re
collaborating to curate each other’s work
across European borders as well as col-
laborating in artistic processes.

NEU/NOW was a really interesting experi-
ence for me. The whole festival was full of
new experiences and feelings. Other young
artists from the festival were very interesting
to discover. It was nice to hear how other
young artists are working and how they are
thinking. The festival was full of new energy,
and the people who participated in it were
all so positive. In that time I had a feeling that
everything was possible. I have only warm
feelings and memories from the festival.
I think I got a lot of inspiration from it. This is
very important for me. I will keep in touch with
other artists who participated in the festival as
well. So I hope that in the future we can share
ideas and that maybe there will be possibilities
for some collaborative projects.

O NEU/NOW é dinâmico.

Fazer parte do Festival NEU/NOW deu-me alguma credibilidade extra como artista performativo profissional.

a platform for the exchange of ideas and

STIGMA
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A work situated
between film, painting and photography,
Jonas Englert’s STIGMA depicts eighteen
faces, all placed an identical distance from
the camera, shown in black and white.
Originally filmed at 100 frames per second
for 72 seconds, the projection is slowed
to just four frames per second, so that not
much more than a minute of footage is
stretched to a half hour and the smallest
movements are precisely revealed.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: The term stigma is
based on the definition that was introduced
to sociology by Erving Goffmann, where
stigma is understood as the gap between
our own and our attributed identity. A
game between stigmatisation and stigma,
conceptualisation and coexistence, my
piece is not about showing recognisable,
associative archetypes, but about creating
an authentic and subtle tension between
ascribed and personal attitudes.
DESCRIçãO: Um trabalho situado entre
o filme, a pintura e a fotografia, “STIGMA”
de Jonas Englert representa dezoito ros-
tos, todos colocados a igual distância da
câmara, apresentados a preto-e-branco.
estigma, concetualização e coexistência, a
minha peça não serve para mostrar arqué-
tipos associativos e reconhecíveis, mas sim
sobre a criação de uma tensão autêntica
e subtil entre atitudes atribuídas e pessoais.

é o resultado de um extensivo projeto
fotográfico com duas das maiores compa-
nhias mineiras na União Europeia, situadas
na Silésia, a parte mais industrializada
da Polónia. O projeto combina fotografia
contemporânea e pesquisa nos arquivos,
que datam até aos anos ‘60, quando a
Polónia atravessou uma expansão eco-
nómica e industrial significativa. No início
balhadores e cidadãos sob a liderança
“Coal Story” exalta as capacidades sociais
e políticas dos mineiros e evoca a histó-
ria e o impacto do lendário movimento
Solidarność.
DECLARAção ARTíSTICA: “Coal Story”
destaca a capacidade social e política dos
mineiros e evoca a memória e os resultados
do lendário Movimento Solidarność. Apesar
minha pesquisa incluem política, a estética,
a distribuição do poder no estado, e o papel
da imagem fotográfica aliada à Teoria da
Dissensão de Jacques Rancière.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Darek Fortas’
Coal Story is the result of an extensive pho-
tographic engagement with the two largest
coal mining companies in the European
Union, located in Silesia, the most industri-
alised part of Poland. The project combines
contemporary photography and archival
research dating back to the 1960s when
Poland experienced significant economic
and industrial expansion. In the early 1980s
coal mines were a major site of struggle
and resistance against the communist
regime, and workers’ protests resulted in
the creation of Solidarity – a workers and
citizens movement under the leadership
of Lech Wałęsa. The coalminers’ actions
eventually led to the collapse of commu-
nism and the end of the Cold War.
Posing important questions that are as-
sociated with Solidarity’s values, the move-
ment’s legacy, and its influence on contem-
porary Polish society, Coal Story highlights
the social and political capacity of the min-
ers and evokes the history and aftermath of
the legendary Solidarity movement.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: Coal Story high-
lights the social and political capacity of
the miners and evokes the history and
aftermath of the legendary Solidarity move-
ment. Despite its strong reference to the
Communist regime and its aftermath, the
exhibition becomes an apt metaphor for
present times and accentuates the im-
portance of counterbalancing politics and
aesthetics produced by the state with the
strength and unique political capacity of the
masses. My research interests include poli-
tics, aesthetics, the distribution of power in
the state, and the role of the photographic
image allied to Jacques Rancière’s notion
of dissensus.

A4#1
as folhas, a apenas 54 cm do chão, luzes
fluorescentes lançam uma iluminação fria
e flutuante sobre as dimensões da peça,
conferindo-lhe uma carga dramática e uma
intensidade que fortalece a sua mensagem
de que complexas atrocidades sócio-
-políticas se escondem sob a superfície da
vida quotidiana.
e o lugar do humano no ecossistema
mundial - sendo estes conceitos ao mesmo
tempo filosóficos e políticos. Eu considero
importância, e no meu trabalho tento res-
ponder às difíceis questões que encontram
resistência no debate social. Não sinto a
necessidade de usar um vocabulário de-
masiado frontal, demasiado cru ou mili-
tante; procuro apenas consciencializar. Se
grande parte do meu trabalho tem raízes
em eventos aparentemente anedóticos, o
sentido do trabalho não é restrito a seres-
Começando no
o qual nenhum destes conceitos existiria.
obviamente, é o humano.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: In 2010, when
Loïc Dieulle conceived the piece A4#1, an
egg-laying hen in France lived out its life
in a cage with floorspace equivalent to an
A4 sheet of paper. Confronting this fact in
the work A4#1, Dieulle arranges sheets of
paper on the exhibition floor, printed with
hens’ footprints and arranged in a battery
farm grid. Suspended above the sheets,
just 54cm from the ground, fluorescent
lights cast cold, fluctuating illumination
on the dimensions of the artwork, bring-
ing drama and intensity to the piece and
strengthening its message that complex
socio-political atrocities often lie hidden
beneath the surface of daily life.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: My works revolve
around the idea of speciesism and the
place of the human in the world’s ecosys-
tem – these being both philosophical and
political concerns. I consider the life of
every living being of equivalent importance,
and try in my work to answer the difficult
questions that face resistance in social
debate. I do not feel the need to use a
vocabulary too frontal, too raw or militant; I
seek only to bring awareness. If most of my
work takes its roots in events which seem
anecdotal, the sense of the work is not
restricted to non-human living beings, and
through interpretation I assume it will open
up to other social and historical topics.
Starting from the animal or plant, I always
come back to the conscious and rational
actor – the main actor without which none
of these concepts exist. obviously, it is the
human.

Perhe-esitys / The Family Act
DESCRIçãO: “Perhe-esitys / The Family
Act” de Laura Rytkönen é uma animação
experimental que joga com os conceitos de
tempo, espaço, perceção e comunidade.
Os bonecos da animação são uma comuni-
dade semelhante a uma família, ocupando
um pequeno espaço com apenas duas
caraterísticas - uma mesa e um sofá. Eles
tentam relacionar-se com os outros, mas
as suas interações muitas das vezes termi-
nam em demonstrações de poder.
Filmado durante três dias numa galeria
aberta, “Perhe-esitys / The Family Act” usa
os visitantes da galeria como fundo - um
fundo confuso e em movimento que expõe
a natureza artificial e construída do tempo
na animação.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Laura Ryt-
könen’s Perhe-esitys / The Family Act is
an experimental animation that plays on
concepts of time, space, perception and
community. The puppets of the animation
are a family-like community, occupying a
space with only two features – a table and
a sofa. They try to connect with each other,
but their interactions often devolve into
displays of power.
Shot over three days in an open gal-
lery, Perhe-esitys / The Family Act uses
the gallery’s visitors as its backdrop – a
frantic, moving background that exposes
the artificial, constructed nature of time in
animation.
DECLARAção ARTíSTICA: Trabalho com a
imagem em movimento. Estou interessado
expressões e emoções guiar a experiência.
As minhas peças inspiram-se muitas vezes
em experiências pessoais das quais então
me distancio.
interno no externo.
estudado. Uma obra de arte pode tornar-se
um lugar de fortalecimento ou um ambiente
seguro para revisitar o incompreensível.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: I work with the
moving image. I’m interested in movement,
repetition, sequence, narrative, and conti-
nuity. My goal is to make my pieces work
on an intuitive level – to let expressions and
emotions guide the experience. My works
often draw from personal experiences that
I then distance myself from. I try to find the
story of a culture behind the experience.
Recurring themes are the searching and
crossing of boundaries and borders, the
individual’s relationship to a culture, and the
effect of the internal on the external.
Lately I’ve been studying fear. Fear is an
interesting mix of primitive intuition and
cultural reaction. I’m interested in the way
an experience that numbs the mind can be
brought to an understandable scale inside
an art piece. Its origin can be invented
and its relationship to places, spaces and
situations can be studied. An art piece can
become an empowering place or a safe en-
vironment to revisit the incomprehensible.

DESCRIçãO: Em 2008 a artista visual
Maria Brinch viveu em Burma/Myanmar
por seis meses. Enquanto fotografava a
cidade de Yangon, ela viu que as mulheres
do seu bairro penduravam a sua roupa
lavada a caminho do trabalho e que as
recolhiam, secas, quando regressavam a
casa. Observando estas rotinas diárias,
Brinch começou a ver a cidade no contexto
dos seus tecidos, começando a vê-los em
toda a parte: redes de mosquito, cortinas,
lençóis estendidos para secar. Estes eram
colocados ao acaso e temporariamente
sobre vedações, varandas, árvores e des-
troços de automóveis; dobrados por todo
o lado e sobre todas as coisas. Parecia a
Brinch que criavam uma promessa estética
de solidariedade, uma esperança por algo
sólido e visual - substancial - numa cidade
oprimida e pobre.
Nos trabalhos apresentados, Brinch dobra
pedaços de têxteis tecidos até fazer escul-
turas, imagens ou instalações de exterior.
A cor, tamanho e peso falam da água, do
I Don’t Need Like You Want
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: In 2008 the
visual artist Maria Brinch lived in Burma/
Myanmar for six months. While photo-
graphing in Yangon City she saw that the
women in her neighbourhood hung out the
washing on their way to work and collected
it, dry, on their way back home. Watching
these daily routines, Brinch began to see
the city in the context of its textiles, notic-
ing garments everywhere: mosquito nets,
curtains, bed sheets hung up to dry. They
were placed randomly and temporarily on
fences, balconies, trees and car wrecks;
folded over anything and everything they
seemed to Brinch to create an aesthetic
promise of solidarity, a hope of something
solid and visual – substantial – in a city suf-
fering under oppression and poverty.
In the presented works, Brinch folds pieces
of woven textiles into sculptures, images or
outdoor installations. The colour, size and
weight speak of water, sun and dust, and
the simple fold is both practical and poetic.
Drawn to the aspect of folded material as
the meeting point of two layers, Brinch’s
work explores the act of folding as a prac-
tice of embracing or wrapping.

uma constelação visual na paisagem
citadina, numa conversa, ou durante uma
rotina diária. Estes fenómenos temporários
surgem como promessas rápidas de unida-
de social - quase como frágeis esboços de
esperança. Eles vão ocorrer e desaparecer,
mas existem para sempre sobrepostos
por novos pensamentos, novos sons e
um novo espaço. Revelada nos têxteis de
uma cidade antiga ou nos vidros partidos
de um edifício bombardeado, estas ex-
periências estéticas tornam-se arte em si
mesmas.
fazer. Posso encontrar isto em qualquer
lado, tal como me podem encontrar a mim
em qualquer lugar.
Como estudante de mestrado do Depar-
tamento Têxtil estou, ao mesmo tempo,
treinado e atraído para as técnicas manuais
tradicionais, e uso estes métodos no meu
trabalho.
lagem e o expressionismo selvagem do
tingimento. Sou atraído para o o aspecto
conceptual dos materiais, também para
aqueles usados e gastos.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: I am always scan-
ning my surroundings for visual experiences
that emerge from our ever-changing human
environment. These are physical experi-
ences but not objects, and can occur as
visual constellations in the city landscape,
in a conversation, or during a daily routine.
These temporary phenomena appear as
quick promises of social unity – almost as
fragile sketches of hope. They will occur
and disappear, but exist forever overlapped
by new thoughts, new sounds and new
space. Revealed in the textiles of a worn-
out city or in the smashed windows in
a bombed-out building, these aesthetic
experiences become art itself. But most
importantly they strengthen my belief in art
and support me in doing what I need to do.
I can find it anywhere, just as it can find me
anywhere.
As a Masters student graduating from
the Textile Department I am both trained
in and attracted to traditional handicraft
techniques, and I use these methods in
my work. I believe in art as something that
makes us think twice, and I find textiles
both personally intimate and global. My big-
gest influence from my education is know-
ing and therefore thinking with textiles, and
I favour the democratic system of weaving
and the wild expressionism of dyeing. I am
drawn to the conceptual aspects of materi-
als, as well as to worn and used ones.

Triad of LifeDESCRIçãO: Jogando com ideias de ico-
nografia religiosa, crença e heterogeneida-
de cultural, Triad of Life, de Ashley Peevor,
reflete sobre o estatuto de um monumento
ou estátua como sendo uma forma de
exibição pública de um objeto privado,
criando um novo ícone religioso. Tomando
espaços do monumento religioso.
DECLARAção ARTíSTICA: A minha prática
diz respeito a várias culturas, tradições
religião no início do século XX à atuali-
dade, a religião mundial sofreu de uma
incapacidade em competir com a cultura
contemporânea e atrair um público con-
temporâneo. Ao contrário da religião, a
cultura contemporânea pode reconfigurar-
-se muito rapidamente - a uma velocidade
nunca dantes vista - retirando continua-
mente e trocando elementos do fosso que
é a cultura de massas. As estruturas de fé e
tradições são construídas através do tem-
po, fazendo com que pareçam estagnadas
quando comparadas ao público cultural e
contemporâneo que estão a tentar cativar.
outras preocupações, objetos e práticas
tornaram-se predominantes e substituíram
a necessidade humanista de adoração.
Seja moda, dinheiro ou riqueza, a cultura
está sempre a apresentar-se com novos
“ídolos”, cada qual tão temporário como
é suficiente, tão representativo como é
ficcional.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Playing with
ideas of religious iconography, belief and
cultural heterogeneity, Ashley Peevor’s
Triad of Life reflects on the status of a
monument or statue as a public exhibi-
tion of a private object by creating a new
religious icon. Taking as its base the form
of a small child – a symbol of the personal
and the intimate – the icon is positioned
on a plinth and hung from the ceiling of the
exhibition space, subverting the customary
placement and presentation of monumental
architecture at the same time as it draws
on the power of the religious monument to
transform space.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: My practice is
concerned with various cultures, tradi-
tions and belief structures and with my
own inability to access them past the
point of a naive observer. With the strong
global decline of religion from the early 20th
century to the present day, world religion
has suffered from an inability to compete
with contemporary culture and attract a
contemporary audience. Unlike religion,
contemporary culture can reshape itself
very quickly – at a speed never seen before
– continually drawing and interchanging
elements from the pit that is mass culture.
Faith structures and traditions are built over
time, making them in some ways stagnant
when compared to the contemporary,
cultured audience they are trying to entice.
other concerns, objects and practices have
become more prevalent and replaced the
humanistic need to worship. Whether it’s
fashion, money or wealth, culture is always
presenting itself with new ‘idols’, each as
temporary as it is sufficient, as representa-
tive as it is fictional.

Tape Generations
DESCRIçãO: No filme artístico “Tape Ge-
nerations” de Johan Rijpma, vemos rolos
de fita ganharem vida. Afixadas a um tecto
em padrões assimétricos, os rolos estão,
primeiramente, ordenados; contudo, rapi-
A forma final
do projeto combina animação em película
e arte de instalação. A forma final deste
projeto combina animação em película e
arte de instalação. Trabalhei neste projeto
durante cerca de seis meses, tentando
muitas composições diferentes antes de
finalmente fazer uma selecção. Uma única
composição podia demorar mais de doze
horas para desenvolver/desmantelar. A ro-
a fita a crescer. Enquanto via o sol nascer e
rapidamente. Momentos como estes des-
poletaram pensamentos acerca das grande
questão na vida e fez-me compreender que
ver rolos de fita desenvolver movimentos
é um processo tão natural como qualquer
outra coisa.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: In Johan
Rijpma’s film artwork Tape Generations, we
see rolls of clear tape come to life. Affixed
to a ceiling in symmetrical patterns, the
rolls are at first orderly; soon, however, the
designs begin to break apart, degenerating
as the adhesive strength of the tape fails
and the rolls are drawn down unpredictably
by time and gravity. The chaotic shapes
and movements that emerge seem to
carry something familiar – some hint of
recognisable life.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: My main fascination
in this work isn’t the tape, but the concept
of time and the way the unpredictable
behaviour of objects interacts with the
design process. The final form of the
project combines film animation and
installation art. I worked on this project for
about six months, trying many different
compositions before finally making a
selection. A single composition could take
more than twelve hours to develop / break
down. The spinning of the disc you see in
the film was done by hand: I turned the disc
about four degrees every 30 seconds while
standing in the wind and rain for hours
watching the tape grow. While watching the
sun rise and set my sense of time began
to change. The warmth generated by the
morning sun caused the tape to unspool
more rapidly. Moments like these triggered
thoughts of the Bigger Questions in life and
made me realise that watching rolls of tape
develop movements is as natural a process
as anything.

Buissonnade
40cmX60cm, e toda a coleção é composta
numa estrutura com quase cinco metros
de comprimento por três de comprimento
- uma cartografia arranjada que, apesar
de ordenada de forma diferente da paisa-
gem real que representa, documenta as
experiências de Chérot com a terra, corpo
e câmara.
DECLARAção ARTíSTICA: Como definir
uma paisagem? É uma coisa ligada à
sensibilidade, cultura visual e muitos outros
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Named after
a French hunting term that describes the
action of moving or retreating into a bush
– like an animal hunting or hiding – Marion
Chérot’s collection Buissonnade is made
up of 30 photographs that study the round
and irregular shape of bush vegetation.
Each of the pieces is 40cm x 60cm, and the
whole collection is composed in a structure
almost five metres long and three wide – an
arranged cartography that, though ordered
differently from the real landscape it de-
picts, documents Chérot’s experiments
with land, body and camera.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: How to define a
landscape? It’s a thing linked to sensibility,
visual culture and many other elements that
interfere between us and the perception of
the land itself. Artists have experimented
with representing the land through their
body and senses; I wanted to go further in
this direction, but with my camera.
I chose to photograph vegetation for the
different compositional possibilities it
has – like a living sculpture. The process
begins with a walk through nature to find
special places that have all the vegetation I
need. Then I connect with nature on a really
close scale, catching frames that have their
own individual time and rhythm. It’s like an
intimate meeting between the vegetation,
my body as it experiments with the terri-
tory, and the camera. I look for ways I can
adapt to the area. Energies collide. After,
I reconstitute the land. Each picture has
a different style – sometimes as light as a
drawing, sometimes much more heavily
condensed. My hunting brings back many
elements, full of contradicting ways, like
knots. These knots become the waves of
this tide of vegetation and give birth to a
feeling landscape.

Escolhi fotografar vegetação pelas dife-
rentes possibilidades de composição que
esta possui - como uma escultura viva. o
processo começa com uma caminhada
pela natureza para encontrar espaços
especiais com toda a vegetação de que
necessito. Então ligo-me à natureza a uma
escala mesmo próxima, capturando enqua-
dramentos com a seu tempo individual e
ritmo. É como um encontro íntimo entre a
vegetação, o meu corpo enquanto este ex-
perimenta o território, e a câmera. Procuro
caminhos para me adaptar à área. Energias
colidem. Depois, reconstituo o terreno.
Cada imagem tem um estilo diferente - por
vezes tão leves como um desenho, outras
muito mais condensadas. A minha caça

Potemkin Village
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Jason Dunne’s
installation Potemkin Village consists of
a large number of cut-out paper figures,
ranging in dimension from miniature to
more than life-sized. Recognisably hu-
man yet repetitive and uncanny, they are
arranged to control the movement of the
gallery’s visitors, drawing them through a
narrow entrance and into an arena where
they are forced to confront these mysteri-
ous and alienating figures.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: I have begun to
experiment with creating images of these
collectives through collage, drawing and
sculpture. Some key questions here are:
How does the self relate to the collective?
How is the self experienced and defined by
our society? Are there alternative experi-
ences of the self in non-Western cultures?
Why do my images tend to such an extent
to replicate and multiply individuals? Why
is this specific individual being multiplied?
How can I change the dynamic of ‘frontal-
ity’ between the viewer and the collective
being portrayed? Can the viewer be includ-
ed in or excluded from the collective instead
of observing as an audience member? Can
the viewer be implicated in the work and in
the process of making the work?
DESCRIçãO: A instalação “Potemkin Villa-
ge” de Jason Dunne consiste num grande
número de figuras de papel recortadas,
com dimensões que vão desde a miniatura
a uma escala maior que o real. Reconheci-
alienantes.
DECLARAção ARTíSTICA: Comecei a
experimentar com a criação de imagens
destes coletivos através de colagem, dese-
nho e escultura. Algumas questões-chave
são: Como é que o “eu” se relaciona com o
coletivo? Como é que o “eu” é experimen-
tado e definido pela nossa sociedade? Há
experiências alternativas do eu na cultura
não-ocidental?
no trabalho e no processo de criação do
trabalho?

SPRING and HOPE = BAHAR and OMID
DESCRIçãO: Baseado numa série de en-
trevistas conduzidas pela artista Ana Zirner
em Teerão, em 2011, “SPRING and HOPE =
BAHAR and OMID” é um trabalho invulgar
BAHAR and OMID” o artista seguiu a sua
própria resposta pessoal ao material que
reuniu.
“SPRING and
HOPE = BAHAR and OMID” não é somente
sobre a virtuosidade dos seus atores, mas
eles também têm de trabalhar com grande
perícia e honestidade para comunicar as
entrevistas, passando-as para o público de
forma a que este consiga aproximar-se o
mais possível das vozes originais no cora-
ção da peça.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Based on a
series of interviews conducted by the artist
Ana Zirner in Tehran in 2011, SPRING and
HoPE = BAHAR and oMID is an unusual
work – a piece that offers both a unique
insight into the political and social realities
of life for young contemporary Iranians, a
generation Zirner’s own age, and a new
definition of what ‘political theatre’ might
be today.
The form of the piece has been developed
through a deliberate confrontation with
the realities of its foundational texts and
the moral obligation to convey them in the
most honest way possible. Rather than
begin from traditional forms of political or
documentary theatre, in SPRING and HoPE
= BAHAR and oMID the artist has followed
her own personal response to the material
she gathered.
The actors in the piece are conduits for
the texts. SPRING and HoPE = BAHAR
and oMID is not about the virtuosity of
the performers, but they must work with
great skill and honesty to communicate the
interviews, delivering them in such a way
that the audience is able to get as close as
possible to the original voices at the heart
of the piece.
Bringing clarity and transparency to the
complicated relationship that exists be-
tween the subjects and the creators of
documentary theatre, SPRING and HoPE
Trazendo claridade e transparência para
a relação complicada que existe entre
as personagens e os criadores do teatro
documental, “SPRING and HOPE = BAHAR
to das coisas. Gostaria de evocar empatia,
mais do que piedade. Para mim, encontrar
uma maneira conveniente de fazer isto é
uma das questões artísticas mais difíceis e
interessantes.
A ideia para este projeto surgiu quando
começou a Primavera Árabe em 2011 e me
Pretendia pausar e
aproximar-me das vidas de algumas das
pessoas que apareciam nas filmagens do
YouTube que dominaram as nossas impres-
sões da sublevação. Neste projeto eu uso
material de conversas que tive em Teerão
em junho de 2011. os irmãos imaginários
Bahar e omid representam muitos outros
jovens iranianos.
= BAHAR and oMID opens up a very per-
sonal, political view of a generation in Iran.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: I am interested in a
theatre that deals with real social and politi-
cal issues by using documentary material
drawn from current events. The distance
that lies between theatre and reality can
work like a magnifying glass: if done well,
theatre makes the issues it talks about
more accessible, bringing new understand-
ing. I would like to evoke empathy rather
than pity. Finding a suitable way to do this
is one of the most difficult and interesting
artistic questions for me.
The idea for this project came when the
Arab Spring began in 2011 and I remem-
bered the Green Movement that swept Iran
in 2009. I wondered what had happened
to it and how people in Iran feel now that
the world around them is changing. Tens
of thousands protested in Tehran after the
elections of 2009. I intended to pause and
zoom in on the lives of some of the people
appearing in the YouTube footage that
dominated our impressions of the uprising.
In this project I use material from conver-
sations I had in Tehran in June 2011. The
fictional siblings Bahar and omid are repre-
sentatives for many other young Iranians.

Kommandopiece aka Space Invaders
mandopiece aka Space Invaders” criamos
uma atuação onde estudamos formas de
autoridade e o uso do poder nos nossos
ambientes diários. A atuação consiste
A performance é re-
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Jarkko Par-
tanen’s Kommandopiece aka Space Invad-
ers is a dance/movement work that inves-
tigates the forms of authority and the uses
of power in our everyday surroundings.
Serious, yet often on the brink of absurdity,
the work plays out scenes of security and
insecurity under the watchful eye of security
cameras – which, depending on your point
of view, either secure or monitor both the
audience and the performers.
The Kommandos take over and seize spac-
es for themselves and the audience, and
examining the actions and the behaviour of
authority in society has brought Partanen’s
piece out of theatres and into the streets
and public spaces. The audience is wel-
comed to witness the Kommandos at work,
but each scene will define the role of the
viewer as bystander or victim...
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: With Kommandop-
iece aka Space Invaders we’ve created
a performance where we study forms of
authority and the use of power in our daily
surroundings. The performance consists
of a variety of scenes in which the theme
could be many things – a hostage situation,
an assault, an action to conquer the space.
Even though the performance deals with
authority in a variety of forms, it does not
take any political stand. The performance
is reshaped for every new location, and our
goal is to reach audiences among people
who wouldn’t necessarily go to the theatre.

Games without Frontiers
DESCRIçãO: A música dos anos ‘80 faz
parte da nossa memória colectiva. Mas
o que foi realmente aquela era estranha
e nostálgica? Isto é o que sete atores vão
tentar descobrir em “Games without Fron-
outros tempos. Sem limites, sem inibições,
e no entanto altamente apáticos e entedia-
dos, eles encenam uma festa de aniver-
sário que se transforma num espetáculo
bizarro. Uma atuação cheia de nostalgia e
humor. “Games without Frontiers” trata o
romantismo da juventude sem propósitos
num mundo absurdo e mágico.
Jakop Ahlbom desenvolveu “Games wi-
inconsciente. Com ilusões, dança, palha-
çada, música e arte visual, tento criar um
mundo mágico onde as personagens se
encontram em luta consigo mesmos e com
o mundo à sua volta. o público é desafiado
para questionar a realidade e identidade
e para reconhecer a complexidade do ser
humano. Desta forma eu tento abrir os
horizontes dos meus públicos, fazendo-os
olhar o mundo com novo assombro.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Music from the
eighties is part of our collective memory.
But what is that strange, nostalgic era
really all about? This is what seven actors
try to discover in Jakop Ahlbom’s Games
without Frontiers, a highly visual, wordless
performance.
In a smooth shiny white set, with disco
balls, a rubik’s cube, a cassette tape and
a Super Mario puppet, the actors play
alongside the pop heroes of another time.
Unrestrained, without inhibitions, and yet
listless and dull, they enact a birthday
party that turns into a bizarre spectacle. A
performance full of nostalgia and humour,
Games without Frontiers is about the
romanticism of purposeless youth in an
absurd and magical world.
Jakop Ahlbom developed Games without
Frontiers together with seven actors
graduated from the Utrecht School of the
Arts in the Netherlands.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: My work explores
the illogic of dreams, bringing audiences
into the realm of the unconscious. With
illusions, dance, slapstick, music and
visual art I aim to create a magical world
where characters fight with themselves and
the world around them. The audience is
challenged to question reality and identity,
and to recognise the complexity of the
human being. In this way I try to widen the
horizon of my audiences, making them gaze
at the world with new amazement.

Schijnbeweging / Feinting
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Two conductors
balance on and move across a frame of
scaffolding set half a metre above the floor;
men in their own universe, they compete to
make the most artful gesture as they wait
for an orchestra to arrive and affirm their
greatness...
Inspired by the star conductor Valery
Gergiev – his charisma, his discipline, his
artistic refinement – MTG Botlek’s Schijnbe-
weging / Feinting is a physical theatre piece
about pride, performance, and the never
satisfied desire of perfection. Performed by
Dwayne Toemere and Yannick Greweld-
inger with dry humour and a touch of irony,
Schijnbeweging / Feinting is given a thrilling
tension by the physical challenge of its set
design – the two conductors balancing on
the scaffolding, jumping pipe to pipe, are
competing to never touch the ground...
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: In our performanc-
es we use dry humour, often with a touch
of irony, and search for the limits of our
physical abilities. As we’ve worked together
extensively, our timing and dynamics are
very much attuned.
The subtlety of the humour often gives the
performances of MTG Botlek a tragicomic
character. Mime (not to be mistaken for
pantomime) is a theatre form that works
with image, movement and space. With
traditional theatre a script often provides
the motive to make a piece, but with mime
the actors use the power of body language
as a source for making, and playing with,
theatre. That’s why mime is also called
physical theatre. our performances can, for
example, originate from studying the behav-
iour of people in everyday life. Text is used
in our performances, but generally in a
supporting role. This shifts the focus to the
details of the acting, and can bring about
some very tense and exciting situations.

DECLARAção ARTíSTICA: Nas nossas
atuações usamos humor seco com um
toque de ironia, enquanto procuramos os
limites das nossas capacidades físicas.
Como já trabalhamos juntos por várias
vezes, a nossa sincronização e dinâmicas
estão bastante afinadas.
A subtileza do humor confere, muitas vezes,
um carácter trágico-cómico às atuações do
MTG Botlek.
exemplo, originar do estudo do compor-
tamento das pessoas na vida quotidiana.
Usamos o texto nas atuações, mas geral-
mente com um papel de apoio. Isto desvia a
atenção para os pormenores da atuação e
pode trazer algumas situações muito tensas
e emocionantes.

carry [you carrying me]
DESCRIçãO: Na performance de vídeo de
Christine Hasler, uma mulher transporta um
homem por uma floresta. Respira pesada-
mente, lutando com o peso do homem e
contra as suas opções limitadas. Com um
ambiente sonoro de respiração e esforço,
“carry [you carrying me]” define, interroga e
A ques-
A relação
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: In Christine
Hasler’s video performance, a woman
carries a man through a forest. She is
breathing heavily, struggling with the weight
of the man and against her limited options.
Underscored with the sounds of breath and
exertion, carry [you carrying me] defines, in-
terrogates and explores the roles assigned
to the artist’s physical body and voice.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: From breathing
to wheezing to the short clicking noises
that come out when the voice struggles
to be heard to the normal speaking voice
that sometimes seems to be singing, the
composition of my piece emerges as a
sequence of minimal, staccato breaths and
sung sounds. The question of what was live
and what was sampled is not important.
The relationship between the sounds and
the presence of the performer are the most
important parameters of the piece. As I
carry the man in the video I set the limits for
myself within the live performance, testing
the limits of voice and presence.

untitled
espectador.
DECLARAção ARTíSTICA: “untitled”
começou como uma pesquisa que ex-
plora um rito de passagem composto de
movimentos repetidos. A minha primeira
preocupação foi que os movimentos não
deveriam ser uma dança composta por
uma coreografia de passos repetidos.
Assim pesquisei por movimentos que já
estivessem inscritos no meu corpo (social)
e procurei por esses movimentos que
estavam vazios de significado, de forma a
que conseguissem adquirir esse significa-
do.
Comecei a ver o meu
corpo como uma “máquina de desejo”,
que é simultaneamente falta e produção,
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A durational
work examining issues of desire articulated
through explorations of the relationship
between domination and submission, Clar-
issa Sacchelli’s untitled invites its audience
members inside a walled space. There they
are free to walk around the performers –
who are clad all in white, barely moving
– and are called upon to immobilise them
using strips of red tape. Evoking a beautiful
quietude belied by the dark undertones
of its material, Sacchelli’s piece commu-
nicates a complex, unspoken, impossible
desire for emptiness and effacement while
challenging the conventional relationship
between performer and spectator.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: untitled started
as a piece of research exploring a rite of
passage composed from repeated move-
ments. My first concern was that the move-
ments should not be a dance composed of
a choreography of repeated steps. Thus I
searched for movements that were already
inscribed in my (social) body, and looked
for those movements that were empty
of meaning so that they could become
meaningful. That is when I started to desire
stillness (an emptiness that could be full)
and also to desire to attach myself to all
my changing desires. I began to see my
body as a ‘desiring-machine’ that is both
lack and production at the same time, and

realised that my desires could just... exist,
coupled with another desire that my body
just exists in relation to other bodies.
In this I found a pure act of masochistic
desire, a political act that allows the body to
erase organisation in favour of the flows of
desire. The masochist is one who produces
desire for the impossible – the impossible
possibility of absolute submission. The
masochist simulates powerlessness and
must have the dominator as an accomplice,
revealing that masochist/performer and
dominator/spectator can only exist by their
interrelation.
Therefore it is not about the pain of being
still and attached until one can no longer
stand it, but it is about the pleasure that in-
terrupts the potency of desire – the potency
to transgress positions of domination and
subjection, the potency to reach emancipa-
tion through a contract between performer
and spectator.

DESCRIçãO: Combinando os talentos do
pianista de Jazz alemão Christian Pabst,
a artista conceptual checa Blanka Pesja e
Pabst
toca piano, Pesia contribui com letras
em spoken word e Aner cria paisagens
sonoras electrónicas e texturadas para um
corpo musical imprevisível que abrange
ambientes que vão de uma tranquilidade
poética ao violento ruído urbano.
DECLARAção ARTíSTICA: Tendo trabalha-
do com um instrumento tão bem-definido
e predefinido historicamente como o piano,
tocar com o DarkEnsemble coloca-me fora
da minha zona de conforto. Fui treinado
para improvisar de acordo com certas
regras como harmonia e tempo. Ao tra-
balhar com o DarkEnsemble estas regras
desvanecem-se, deixando espaço para
as negociações desafiadoras e (re)inter-
lectivamente.
Cada atuação é uma nova viagem porque
as possibilidades para alterar e interpretar
o material são infinitas. Espelhando a
complexa interação entre o indivíduo e um
mundo altamente interligado digitalmente e
analogicamente, o som do DarkEnsemble
é uma contribuição interdisciplinar neces-
sária para o campo da arte conceptual
contemporânea. Num futuro próximo, tanto
músicos pop como músicos clássicos, bem
como artistas visuais, vão colaborar com o
DarkEnsemble.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Combining the

context of improvisation. Pabst plays piano,
Pesja contributes spoken word lyrics, and
Aner creates textured electronic sound-
scapes for an unpredictable body of music
that ranges from poetic tranquillity to violent
urban noise.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: Coming from work-
ing with such a historically well-developed
and predefined instrument as the piano,
playing with the DarkEnsemble puts me
out of my comfort zone. I’ve been trained
to improvise according to a certain set of
rules like harmony and time. Working with
DarkEnsemble these rules fade away, mak-
ing room for the challenging negotiation
and (re-)interpretation of spoken word and
electronic sonorities. Each member of the
ensemble has their own power, and a single
note, word or sound can radially change the
meaning of a collectively created moment.
Each performance is a new voyage be-

Volume
nossa perceção sónica do espaço.
Ulrich Troyer. É um documentário acerca
de pessoas com deficiências visuais, que
descrevem como compreendem o que os
rodeia e como se orientam no dia-a-dia
usando a audição.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Volume is a

space as an acoustic object. 24 electronic
motors are mounted on different surfaces
that are part of the exhibition room – plaster
walls, plastic light switches, wooden floor-
boards, glass windowpanes – with each
motor equipped with a small metal spike.
When a motor is activated, the spike flicks
down and knocks the surface on which it’s
mounted to produce a specific sound. All
the motors are connected to a small main
control – an Arduino board and some elec-
tronics – which runs a score composed of
a series of varying random algorithms. The
sounds produced are diverse in temporal
and spatial coordination, with each having
its own unique origin. The score itself is
adapted for every room where the installa-
tion is shown.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: The space is an
essential part of my installation. Every
exhibition space is a unique representation
and interpretation of the work’s core idea,
which is to play with the acoustic proper-
ties of rooms and our sonic perception
of space. A big inspiration for this project
was a surround-sound audio drama called
Sehen mit Ohren / Seeing with ears by
Ulrich Troyer. It’s a documentary about
visually handicapped people, who describe
how they perceive their surroundings and
how they navigate everyday life with their
sense of hearing. one crucial method
they use is to listen to the way sounds are
reflected by the shape of a room and the
objects inside it.
Volume uses the room as a kind of instru-
ment. It is scanning the surroundings in
a sonic way, and so tries to provide an
acoustic perception of architectonic space.
The knocking sounds produced by the
motors are very subtle and low in volume.
Sometimes it recalls the creaking noises of
wood in old houses, sometimes it sounds
like raindrops falling on a rooftop.

DUO: Xenia Zemskaja & Talvi Hunt
DESCRIçãO: Formado no final de 2008
pelo compositora e cantora Xenia Zemskaja
e pelo pianista Talvi Hunt, “Duo” cria músi-
ca eclética que combina elementos de rock
avant-garde, folk e neo-clássico. As pró-
prias canções, compostas principalmente
enquanto Zemskaja estudava em Varsóvia,
roçam um humor negro enquanto explo-
ram os mundos emocionais internos das
suas personagens, retirando inspiração
de artistas tão diversos como Edgar Allan
Poe, Tim Burton, Patricia Petibon, Modest
Mussorgsky, Kate Bush, Björk, Merzbow,
Os Beatles e Arnold Schoenberg.
DECLARAção ARTíSTICA: Cada canção
do ciclo pode ser entendida como uma
pequena performance em e de si mesma,
com as dez canções criando dez quadros
musicais diferentes contendo persona-
surpreendido.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Formed at the
end of 2008 by composer and singer Xenia
Zemskaja and pianist Talvi Hunt, Duo cre-
ate eclectic music combining elements of
avant-garde rock, folk and neo-classic. The
songs themselves, composed mostly while
Zemskaja was studying in Warsaw, strike
notes of dark humour as they explore the
internal emotional worlds of their charac-
ters, drawing inspiration from such diverse
artists as Edgar Allan Poe, Tim Burton,
Patricia Petibon, Modest Mussorgsky, Kate
Bush, Björk, Merzbow, The Beatles, and
Arnold Schoenberg.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: Every song from
the cycle can be understood as a small
performance in and of itself, with the ten
songs creating ten different musical pic-
tures containing unique characters and
situations. our idea of performance con-
stantly changes and develops, evolving into
new forms, and that’s why it’s impossible
to see similarities between one song and
another. The audience are constantly being

Muschelrauschen
outros artistas.
DECLARAção ARTíSTICA: A primeira
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: For wind /
attach, the artist Leo Hofmann has built a
set of modified headphones that are driven
not only by sound but also by air. Each
earcup is connected to two leads – the
audio cable, and a small tube through
which air flows – so that a recorded voice
can be combined with short pulses of air to
create the startling sensation that someone
is whispering in your ear.
Such intimate, naturalistic effects are just
one use for the wind / attach system,
however, and Hofmann has concentrated
on simplifying the system so that the
airflow can be operated in software
such as PureData with a single fader, or
automated with an audio sequencer. His
intention is to release the system as open
source technology to see what abstract,
conceptual combinations of sound and air
other artists might be able to achieve...
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: The first piece
I realised with the wind / attach system
was a short, seven-minute composition
for modified headphones called
Muschelraschen. The title is a German
word meaning ‘shell roar’, and describes
the sound that can be heard if you put a
bivalve to your ear. In reality it’s the sound
of your own blood echoed in the shell, but
there’s a story that’s often told to children:
the sound of the sea is inside the shell, and
it stays there even when you take it away
from the coast. In my piece it’s possible to
hear and feel the wind in your ears. I tried
to give the impression that the sea had
come alive in order to tell a highly poetic
story about the way our memory refers to
objects.

How to save the bluefin tuna
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Can art save the
world? If the bluefin tuna, now a critically
endangered species, disappears from our
oceans, then it could potentially unbalance
the global ecosystem and begin a chain
reaction with severe implications for the
human race...
Michael Dilissen and Diederik Jeangout’s
How to save the bluefin tuna harnesses
the power of design to incite us to save
our common environment, at the same
time casting a critical eye on the effective-
ness of other bluefin campaigns. Seeking
to distinguish itself from those ecological
organisations that operate as businesses,
investing in banal advertisements in order
to raise money from membership fees to
reinvest into more banal advertisements,
Dilissen and Jeangout’s project mobilises
its audience with actions like Chopstick
Guerilla, a DIY campaign to turn chopsticks
into tiny placards (‘Save the bluefin tuna!’,
‘Stop eating a nearly extinct species!’) and
smuggle them into sushi restaurants.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: Can art save the
world? This is a question that has been
raised over and over again, but as advertis-
ing students we believe we’ve acquired
certain skills that can be be truly useful and
have a real impact.
DESCRIçãO: Será que a arte pode salvar
o mundo? Se o atum rabilho, agora uma
espécie criticamente em vias de extinção,
desaparecer dos nossos oceanos, então
isso poderia potencialmente desequilibrar
o ecossistema global e iniciar uma reação
em cadeia com graves implicações para a
raça humana.
A obra de Michael Dilissen e Diederik Jean-
gout “How to save the bluefin tuna” reúne
salvar o nosso ambiente comum, enquanto
lança um olhar crítico sobre a efetividade
de outras campanhas de proteção do atum
rabilho. Procurando distinguir-se daquelas
organizações ecológicas que operam em
modelos comerciais, investindo em propa-
ganda banal de forma a angariar dinheiro
com taxas de filiação para re-investir em
mais propaganda banal, o projeto de
Dilissen e Jeangout mobiliza a audiência
com ações como “Guerrilha de Pauzinhos”,
uma campanha “faça-você-mesmo” para
transformar pauzinhos em pequenos pla-
cards (“Salvem o atum rabilho!”, “Parem de
comer uma espécie praticamente extinta!”)
e contrabandeiam-nos para o interior de
restaurantes de sushi.
DECLARAção ARTíSTICA: Será que a arte

que foi levantada vezes sem conta, mas
como estudantes de publicidade julgamos
ter adquirido certas competências que
podem ser verdadeiramente úteis e ter um
impacto real.

The Ride of Kings
DESCRIçãO: Inspirado pelo festival folcló-
rico checo e celebração anual “The Ride
manga enrugada e as imagens bordadas
Atualizando as vestimentas folclóricas
para um estilo contemporâneo, que Lenka
considera uma forma de “pompa moder-
na”, os desenhos são abordados de uma
forma minimalista, combinando tricotado
ideias. Muitas das vezes procuro inspiração
na arte folclórica e na vida. Também de-
senho figurinos para filmes e desenhei um
fato nacional.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Inspired by
the annual Czech folklore festival and
celebration The Ride of Kings, an event
on the UNESCO world heritage list, Lenka
Chroboková’s collection of designs works
with three motifs drawn from the event –
the wrinkled sleeve, and the embroidered
images of the horse and the rose on a silk
organza.
Updating the folkloric garments to a con-
temporary style that Lenka considers a
sort of ‘modern pomp’, the designs take a
minimalist approach, combining black vis-
cose knitwear, the black organza and white
silk taffetta in a structure of sharp lines and
geometric shapes.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: The basic elements
of my work are volume, contrast and craft. I
always try to see a design from all possible
angles in order to find new solutions and to
reach the most fundamental shapes and
materials that can express my ideas. I often
look for inspiration in folklore art and life. I
also design costumes for film and designed

Series of wooden lamps Eralux
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Lamps play an
important dual role in the design of interior
spaces, providing effective lighting to a
given space at the same time as they carry
aesthetic value.
Satisfying both the functional and aesthetic
needs of the lamp, Jernej Orhini’s wooden
designs have been created using a new
system of modular construction where the
individual elements can be swapped out
and in without the need for glue, screws or
nails. Here the prototypes are for different
lights and shades, but Orhini’s innovative,
modular system could be adapted for a
range of products with only a few small
changes.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: The way I see it a
lamp is not just an object that casts light; it
is a part of the design of an interior space
and needs to offer a unique experience. For
my project I wanted to create an innova-
tive series of wooden lights that would be
easy to use and to modify, and I wanted to
create a sophisticated product that would
be ready for mass production. Due to the
properties of the material, it was necessary
to develop a system that would be both
lightweight and structurally solid.
DESCRIçãO: Os candeeiros ocupam um
papel dualista no design de espaços inte-
riores, proporcionando iluminação efetiva
para um dado espaço enquanto, simulta-
neamente, carregam um valor estético.
Satisfazendo tanto as necessidades funcio-
nais e estéticas do candeeiro, os projetos
em madeira de Jernej Orhini foram criados
usando um novo sistema de construções
modulares, onde os elementos individuais
podem ser trocados sem a necessidade de
cola, parafusos ou pregos. Aqui os protó-
tipos são para diferentes luzes e sombras,
mas o sistema modular e inovador de
Orhini pode ser adaptados para uma gama
de produtos com apenas umas pequenas
mudanças.
DECLARAção ARTíSTICA: Para a minha
Devido
às propriedades do material, foi necessário
desenvolver um sistema que fosse simulta-
neamente leve e estruturalmente sólido.

Sustainable Packagings
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Working with
naturally occurring organic waste materi-
als that would otherwise be discarded, the
project Sustainable Packaging recycles
fallen leaves, pine needles and cut grass to
create biodegradable packaging for plant
bulbs and seeds. The packaging is light-
weight and can be produced in any size,
with bulbs held in egg-shaped containers
(which can be planted as well, breaking
down into mulch), and seeds contained in
hollow sticks – nature’s own packaging.
The design of the packaging is inspired by
a minimalist graphic approach and by the
materials themselves, with hand-drawn
labels illustrating leaves, grass, needles and
sticks. The simplicity of these drawings, the
clean, spacious graphic style, and the care-
ful use of colour contrast with the glossy
photographs more usually seen in garden
centres and return the buyer’s attention to
the packaging itself.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: Sustainability is a
very important, world-changing concept in
the modern world – particularly in packag-
ing design. I was also very interested in
sustainability and eco-design because it’s
characterised by a vibrant creative ability to
search for alternative, innovative solutions;
it encourages people to get creative and
experiment. As well, I was fascinated and
inspired by ancient packaging solutions that
were made from organic, locally sourced
raw materials. So my goal was to use an-
cient solutions for the modern world, focus-
ing attention on ecology and sustainability
by combining ancient tradition and modern
aesthetics to create environmentally friendly
packaging.

Is there a Crisis!?
DESCRIçãO: Um monólogo cáustico
representado como uma curta animação
tipográfica. A obra “Is there a Crisis!?”,
nossa sociedade capitalista.
Aproximando-se das qualidades frias e
analíticas do design tipográfico, Mesquita
as coisas. Dada a situação atual da crise
das finanças globais, a psique das massas
torna-se cada vez mais um movimento
em busca de princípios e valores que
possam intervir globalmente para romper a
estrutura social estratificada da civilização
humana.
avanços tecnológicos do Homem. Segun-
do esta teoria, podemos aproximar-nos da
ideia que é a ignorância do ciclo do eterno
retorno que nos encerra na preocupação
da crise atual.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A caustic mono-
logue depicted as a short typographic
animation, Hugo Edgar Mesquita’s Is
there a Crisis!? adopts the perspective of
a nihilistic character to explore the current
financial crisis as just one of many financial
crises – seeing the bust as one of the most
important (re)current events of our capital-
ist society.
Drawing on the cold, analytical qualities
of typographic design, Mesquita draws
his character’s argument toward Nikolai
Kondratiev’s theory of long-term ‘waves’
– business cycles that move from boom to
depression over a period of 50 or 60 years
– to suggest that it is our ignorance of the
cyclical nature of the economic system that
has lead to our current circumstances, but
also, perhaps, that the ‘crisis’ is less severe
than we might think...
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: In search of the
truth, we find the abyss of all things. Given
the current situation of the global financial
crisis, the psyche of the masses becomes
more and more a movement in search of
principles and values that can universally
intervene to disrupt the stratified social
structure of human civilization. Nikolai
Kondratiev’s theory of long waves, or cy-
cles, gives us a statistically comprehensive
analysis of history’s financial crises and
their relationship with the technological
advances of man. By this theory we can
approach the idea that it is ignorance of the
cycle of eternal return that traps us in the
distress of the current crisis.

Boon: Editorial Design
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: BooN is a
journal primarily aimed at students of the
creative arts. Aiming to raise the bar for
the standard of student publications, it
offers readers information that’s engaging,
relevant and never patronising, basing each
issue around a central concept that also
inspires the publication’s design.
The central concept behind the first issue of
BooN is that of searching, and particularly
the idea of the continuous search in relation
to the Internet – a place where our experi-
ence is defined by ‘the search’, and one
where we can build idiosyncratic narratives
as we navigate through what we read.
The articles in BooN’s first edition have
been taken from a number of web and print
sources to suggest the idea that, for all
the Internet has democratised information,
there is still a sense of exclusivity to the
content of some print publications.
DESCRIçãO: BOON é um jornal princi-
palmente orientado para estudantes das
áreas criativas. Tentando elevar a fasquia
do padrão das publicações de estudantes,
oferece aos seus leitores informação que é
envolvente, relevante e nunca condescen-
dente, baseando cada edição em torno de
um conceito central que também inspira o
design da publicação.
O conceito central por detrás da primeira
edição da BOON é o da procura, e particu-
larmente a ideia da pesquisa contínua em
relação à Internet - um lugar onde a nossa
experiência é definida “pela pesquisa”, uma
onde podemos construir narrativas idios-

levante. Na Internet podemos encontrar
entrevistas com a estrela do espetáculo do
qual acabamos de ver consecutivamente
quatro séries, informação sobre o plano de
fundo sociológico de uma peça de design
particular, ou fatos mais fortuitos que
possam ser provocantes. Isto presumindo,
claro, que não somos facilmente distraídos
por ligações para artigos relacionados (e
igualmente relevantes), ou até por algumas
das fotos que um dos seus 500 amigos
acabou de colocar online. Pondo as distra-
gular]: a thing that is helpful or beneficial.
If you think about it we are constantly
searching for something – those damn
keys, that idea to kickstart a project, or
even a decent kebab. In trawling through
books, magazines and web pages to feed
a hunger for information we search for solid
facts, looking to receive a payoff in the form
of ideas big and small. Ultimately it is the
knowledge that we have searched for which
in turn informs our work.
on the Internet, where we find ourselves
spending increasingly more time, the idea
of continuous searching is even more
relevant. on the Internet you can find in-
terviews with the star of the show that you
just watched four consecutive series of,
information on the sociological background
of a particular piece of design, or more
random facts than you can shake a stick at.
This is assuming of course that you’re not
easily lead off on tangents by links to re-
lated (and just as relevant) articles, or even
by some of the photos which one of your
500 friends has just posted. Distractions
aside, the ability to find something interest-
ing in almost anything is a practical skill to
have when creating: you never know where
your next BooN will come from or where it
might take you.

Bak murene i Vik / Behind Bars in VikPROJECT DESCRIPTION: Future detention
policy in Norway intends to provide reha-
bilitation for inmates. Currently detention is
foremost a punishment, but can also be an
opportunity for inmates to develop the skills
and values necessary to seek employment
and become law-abiding citizens once
they’re released. All Norwegian inmates
have mandatory work duties during deten-
tion, but these tasks – which may vary from
scrubbing floors to making candles, bath-
tubs, or toys – have remained unchanged
since the 1960s.
If the duties of detained prisoners are
intended to play a role in developing their
skills and learning capacity, how can design
benefit these inmates? Can the production
of furniture in prisons stimulate dignity,
perspective and pride among inmates? For
the project Bak murene i Vik / Behind Bars
in Vik the artist Morten Skjærpe Knarrum
designed furniture intended for production
in prisons after holding a workshop with
six inmates from Vik prison in Sogn. Using
traditional techniques from cabinet-making,
Knarrum’s dining-room furniture designs
are meant for an outside market. By recon-
necting mandatory duties with real ap-
plication, real use, his project aims to teach
a profession and useful skills to inmates,
improving their self-confidence and future
prospects.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: How can design
change people? In my project I’ve worked
with design not only as a visual tool, but as
an aid to stimulate and encourage greater
pride, resilience and positive thinking
among inmates.
I want my project to be a contribution
toward shaping a future justice system
where the goal is to introduce rehabilitative
measures within the sentence.
DESCRIçãO: As políticas de detenção a
aplicar futuramente na Noruega tencionam
providenciar reabilitação para os reclusos.
Atualmente a detenção é, em primeiro
lugar, uma forma de castigo, mas pode
também ser uma oportunidade para os
reclusos desenvolverem competências
e valores necessários para a procura de
emprego e se tornarem cidadãos cumpri-
dores da lei assim que forem soltos. Todos
os prisioneiros noruegueses têm uma série
de trabalhos obrigatórios durante o tempo
de detenção, mas estas tarefas - que po-
dem variar de limpar chãos, a fazer velas,
banheiras ou brinquedos - permaneceram
inalteradas desde os anos ‘60.
Se os deveres dos prisioneiros pretendem
desempenhar um papel no desenvolvimen-
to das suas capacidades e capacidades
de aprendizagem, como pode o projeto
beneficiar estes reclusos? Poderá a pro-
dução de mobiliário nas prisões estimular
a dignidade, perspectiva e orgulho entre
a população prisional? Para o projeto
“Bak murene i Vik / Behind Bars in Vik” o
design mudar as pessoas? No meu projeto

os velhos baloiços, um caminho florestal;
uma imagem dissolve-se na seguinte.
A linguagem visual desta peça é a Polaroid
tos no tempo.
DECLARAção ARTíSTICA: Era minha
intenção fazer um filme acerca da perceção
do tempo e como percebemos o momento.
Uma vida é uma coleção de momentos;
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: If, as is some-
times said, a moment lasts three seconds,
then how many moments make up a life,
and which moments will we remember?
In Julia Tyrolt’s delicate short film an old
man recalls scenes from his childhood and
later in life – a Ferris wheel, the old swings,
a woodland path; one image merges into
the next.
The visual language of the piece is the
Polaroid – a snapshot, blurry and fading, of
an old memory – as, in a striking synthesis
of form and content, Tyrolt’s project con-
verts the images of a digital film into a total
of 7592 artificial Polaroids. Re-shot in single
frame mode with a still camera, they create
an effect of stop-motion, or of time lapse –
of moments in time.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: It was my intention
to make a film about the perception of time
and how we perceive the moment. A life-
time is a collection of moments; assuming
the average life expectancy of a Western
European, there will be about 828 million of
them in a life. Some seem more important,
some less. Some will be in our memory
forever, some fade straight away – and
the older one gets the faster everything
happens and the less memories one has.
With this film I was trying to create a mood
in which the viewer could contemplate the
moments of a lifetime.

A few millimetres under the root
DESCRIçãO: Passado nos Estados Unidos
durante os anos ‘30 e ‘40, a animação “A
few millimetres under the root”, de Michal
aspirar incessantemente, do parque local
“A few millimetres under the root” está a
No filme trabalhava a
paz? Tranquilidade absoluta ou ruído abso-
luto? A solução poderá ser encontrada na
adaptação. Não nos deveríamos agarrar a
velhos hábitos e a antigos princípios.
A ação do filme é propositadamente rá-
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Set in the United
States during the 1930s and 40s, Michal
Harustiak’s animation A few millimetres un-
der the root uses a simple story – that of an
old man trying to find a quiet place to read
his book – to reflect wryly on stubbornness,
habit and inevitably. Driven from his home
by the incredible noise of his wife’s inces-
sant vacuuming, from the local park by
wailing ambulance sirens, and from church
by a procession of black-clad mourners,
the old man’s search for peace takes him
through the gates of the misty, ethereal
graveyard. How far is he willing to go?
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: The old man in A
few millimetres under the root is looking for
peace in an age of war and crisis, and my
film is about his adherence to the ritual and
the familiar. In the film I am working with
the idea that by fighting the problems that
will, in the end, reach all of us, we might
bring about results more fatal that we can
imagine.
This theme has huge importance in the
story. The old man’s effort in searching for a
quiet place reflects on the question: What is
quietness and peace? Absolute quietness
or absolute noise? The solution is to be
found in adaptation. We shouldn’t cling to
old habits and old principles.
The action in the film is fast on purpose,
with the old man’s search for a quiet spot
interrupted by unexpected coincidences
that hold the audience’s curiosity. The
music in the film matches the imagery, with
swing chosen as the best genre to fit the
funny storytelling.

fEATHERFISH
DESCRIçãO: Uma animação cubista sur-
real sobre o orgulho, derrota e fragilidade
emocional. “fEATHERFISH”, a curta-me-
tragem de animação de Katharina Nieder-
meier, adopta uma técnica de stop-motion
memorável que usa dois materiais: papel,
do qual as figuras e estranhas paisagens
são recortadas; e carne crua, cortada em
pedaços, rodando húmidas sobre as su-
perfícies das coisas. Quando os dois mate-
riais se tocam, alteram-se mutuamente.
Seguindo um protagonista chamado “Me”
exemplo usando estruturas contrastantes
de uma forma influenciada por Jan Svank-
majer e Richard Sweeney.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A surreal cub-
ist animation about hubris, defeat and
emotional fragility, Katharina Niedermeier’s
short animation fEATHERFISH adopts a
striking stop-motion technique that uses
two materials: paper, from which the figures
and strange landscapes are cut; and raw
meat, cut in chunks, rolling wetly over the
surfaces of things. When the two materials
touch, they change each other.
Following a protagonist named ‘Me’ as
he exults in, suffers in the prison of, and
finally recovers from his pride in his own
power and independence, fEATHERFISH
is an unusual, intense, angular animation
piece accompanied by a poetic and ludic
narrated text.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: For my graduate
film fEATHERFISH I developed an animation
technique that’s a combination of cut-out
pixilation and stop-motion, in a relief set-
ting that shows several depths of field at
the same time. In order to represent the
shift of identities in the film I experimented
with ‘real’ and ‘fake’ depth and negative
and positive space – for example by using
contrasting textures in a way influenced by
Jan Svankmajer and Richard Sweeney.

Viagem Até Casa
DESCRIçãO: Filmado em 2010 no coração
do Porto, a segunda maior cidade de Por-
tugal, o filme documental de Bárbara Veiga
“Viagem até Casa”, revisita as localizações
exatas do filme de 1942 “Aniki-Bóbó” (o
primeiro trabalho não-documental) do
famoso realizador português Manoel de
Oliveira. Viajando para Miragaia, Ribeira,
Sé e Sobreiras, “Viagem até Casa” reúne
testemunhos de pessoas locais que teste-
munharam as filmagens do filme de Oliveira
nos anos ‘40, e filma crianças de Miragaia
e S. Nicolau a encenar novamente cenas
originais do “Aniki-bóbó”.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Shot in 2010 in
the heart of Porto, Portugal’s second larg-
est city, Bárbara Veiga’s documentary film
Viagem Até Casa(Travelling Home) revisits
the exact locations of Aniki-Bóbó, the 1942
film (and first non-documentary work) by
the famous Portuguese director Manoel
de Oliveira. Travelling to Miragaia, Ribeira,
Sé and Sobreiras, Viagem Até Casa gath-
ers testimonies from local people who
witnessed the shooting of Oliveira’s movie
back in the 40s, and films children from Mi-
ragaia e S.Nicolau re-enacting Aniki-Bóbó’s
original scenes.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: The objective of this
documentary was to preserve the memory
of a place and a group of people from a
certain time, just as Aniki-Bóbó has done
with memories of a forgotten Porto. That’s
why I’ve been showing this movie in several
places in Porto – so that people can re-
member and share histories from their past
and their city.

Henry Waltz
cas ilegais no planeta Terangi, construído
pelo homem e cada vez mais mecanizado.
Quando Waltz se involve com um projeto
experimental secreto é forçado a aban-
donar a sua vida confortável e torna-se
num homem procurado - perseguido pela
sinistra Gerência, bem como por figuras
do sub-mundo do planeta. Na busca de
uma substância orgânica que o mantenha
vivo, Waltz encontra uma conspiração em
grande-escala dirigida pela elite, desven-
dando um esquema que drena energia do
planeta...
acabar o filme.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Set in a fantasy
world detailed with the rich imagery of clas-
sic Hollywood, steampunk science fiction,
and a reimagined 1930s and 40s America,
Emil Goodman’s Henry Waltz is a transme-
dia and feature film project that combines
live-action footage with paper animation to
bring to life a unique and engaging vision.
The project’s trailer gives us a glimpse
into the world of Henry Waltz – a man who
deals in illegal organic substances on the
increasingly mechanised, man-made planet
of Terangi. When Waltz gets involved in a
secret experimental project he’s forced to
give up his comfortable life and becomes a
wanted man – chased by the sinister Man-
agement as well as figures from the planet’s
underworld. In search of an organic sub-
stance that will keep him alive, Waltz hap-
pens upon a large-scale conspiracy run by
the planet’s elite, unravelling a scam that
drains energy from the planet...
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: Henry Waltz is
a film about the titular character and his
adventurous travels in a peculiar world. As
an animation filmmaker, director and de-
signer, my graduation project was to design
the visual style for Henry Waltz and to find
a technique for the animation. Now I would
like to finish the film.
