before Passover. Since the siyyum is

followed by a seudat mitzvah, a fes&ve

meal that follows the performance of

certain Mitzvot, a first born who is

present may eat as part of the

celebra&on, and having eaten does not

fast that day. !!

Here is my guess for the top three universal comments

as we prepare for Passover sedarim this year:!

1. “Wow, Passover comes early this year!” Yes and no.

March 30 does feel early but it’s s&ll the 14th of Nisan.!

2. “Are we finally going to eat rice this year and claim honorary

Sephardic status?” It’s up to you�there is good grounds in Jewish law

that the Ashkenazic prohibi&ons are about crea&ng fences around

fences�but maintaining family customs is a powerful Halakhic

ra&onale as well.!

3. “Is Rela&ve X going to kill Rela&ve Y when we go from the

commentary of the Haggadah to a discussion of poli&cs?” Hopefully

not�especially when we remember that the Passover seder was

actually intended as a vehicle for passionate disagreement!!

How do we know that the Passover seder was never intended to be a

conversa&on only for those who share the same points of view? Just

remember the rabbis of B’nai Brak about whom we read in the

Haggadah. Today B’nai Brak is an ultra�Orthodox suburb of Tel Aviv,

but 2,000 years ago it was the site of one of the most diverse groups of

Jews ever to assemble. The rabbis who are men&oned in our Haggadah

consciously sought to live out the famous Talmudic dictum: “Both

these and those are the words of the living God” (Talmud Eruvin 13b).

Whether they agreed or disagreed, they sat together engaging

in!mahloket l’shem shamayim!(arguments for the sake of heaven), a

Jewish tradi&on that requires deep respect for other human beings,

even�and especially�when those viewpoints are fundamentally

opposed to our own.!

Who were these rabbis? Rabbi Eliezer was the elder statesman whose

views were usually in deep disagreement with the prevailing norms of

the &me. He is famously remembered for arguing against the majority

about the ritual fitness of the “Oven of Achnai,” a dispute that led to

his excommunica&on. Other Bnai Brak rabbis included Rabbi Joshua, a

man of li>le financial means but whose understanding of the non�

Jewish community made him deeply valued among his peers. There

was also Rabbi Eleazar Ben Azaria, a younger rabbi who came from a

family of wealth but who challenged the eli&sm of the rabbinic

academies. There was also Rabbi Akiva the scholar who began his

Jewish studies at the age of 40 and called for rebellion against Rome.

And finally, there was Rabbi Tarphon, best known for disagreeing with

almost every opinion his friend Rabbi Akiva ever offered! These rabbis

held profoundly different opinions and worldviews, yet we con&nue to

learn from their debates. !

The key to these Sages being remembered in our Haggadot, despite

their profoundly different points of view, is that they held each other in

deep respect even though they had profound differences. If they were

all alive today, I have li>le doubt that they would be having passionate

conversa&ons not only about whether to eat rice and beans, but about

Israeli poli&cs, immigra&on reform, and what we have learned from the

#MeToo movement as well. (cont. pg. 4)!

Happy 70th Birthday Israel!!!!

From the moment of the first exile of our People from the

land of Israel in 586 BCE we as a People have mourned for

the destruc&on of Jerusalem, and yearned for it to be

rebuilt and for us to return to the Holy Land.!!The pain of

our exile from Jerusalem was recorded in Psalm 137: “By

the rivers of Babylon, there we sat, sat and wept, as we

thought of Zion. There on the poplars we hung up our lyres,

for our captors asked us there for songs, our

tormentors,!for amusement, “Sing us one of the songs of

Zion.” How can we sing a song of the God on alien soil? If I

forget you, O Jerusalem, let my right hand wither; let my

tongue s&ck to my palate if I cease to think of you, if I do

not keep Jerusalem in memory even at my happiest hour.”

In this poem the Psalmist records how it felt to be expelled

from our Land, and how we will always remember

Jerusalem. !!

There are many examples of this kind of wri&ng in our

history. AJer a meal on Shabbat we begin our blessing with

Psalm 126, Shir HaMa’alot: “A song of ascents. When God

restores the exiles of Zion, we will be like dreamers. Our

mouths will fill with laughter, our tongues, with songs of

joy.” Here the writer reminds us that exile will not be

forever and that we will return to Zion, one of many names

for Jerusalem. Our Tradi&on is filled with examples of the

pain of exile and the deep hope and belief that one day we

will return to our Holy Land.!!

These remembrances of exile make us ever more grateful

that we live in a &me when it is no longer just a hope, a

&kva, for a Jewish State, but a reality. In Israel‘s 70th

year,

we remember and honor so many for making this dream a

reality. Here are a few: We remember NaJali Hertz Imber

for wri&ng the words of Ha&kva, in 1878 which would

become our Na&onal anthem; we remember Eliezer ben

Yehuda, who brought Hebrew back to life as our na&onal

language, we remember Theodor Herzl, a journalist who

covered the Dreyfus Affair in 1894, and sensed the deep

an&� semi&sm in the world and published “The Jewish

State” in 1896. In 1897 he would convene the first Zionist

Congress. We remember all of the Jews from Europe and

the Middle East who began to go up to the land of Israel

beginning in the first Aliya in 1882, and con&nuing to go up

to build a new Jewish society. They build roads, ci&es, an

army, a government and are building a modern society. We

remember all who have fallen in the defense of our land.

And even those of us who were not yet born in 1948, have

the collec&ve memory of May 14th

, 1948 / 5 Iyar, 5708

when David Ben Gurion declared Israel a State.!!

We are fortunate to live in a &me in Jewish history when

the Jewish story is being played out in our land and in our

State. And we must celebrate the reality

of 70 years. Israel is no longer a new,

fledgling place; Israel is a highly

industrious, successful, Western country.

And we joyfully celebrate Israel and pray

and work for her con&nued good welfare.!!

Our community engages with Israel in so many ways. In the

coming months join us in celebra&ng Israel 70!!!

Adom Ambulance for Israel from our community. The

goal is $100K and every dona&on is important. In Israel

there is a great need for many more ambulances.

• Plan A Trip to Israel � If you have never been, or have

not been recently, contact me and I will be thrilled to

point you in the direc&on of some great ways to visit

Israel � as a tourist, for vaca&on, to study or as a

volunteer.!!

In addi&on to the concrete ac&ons that we can take to

celebrate Israel at 70, the Zionist in me believes that it is

important for Diaspora Jews to also think about and

consider issues of Zionism and our rela*onship to Israel as

a way of showing our love for Israel and the Jewish

People. As we know, we are taught to ask good ques&ons,

and it is the ques&ons that are most important. I am not

sugges&ng answers; rather taking the opportunity to

suggest some ques&ons for each of us to consider as we

celebrate Israel at 70! !!

Here are just a few:!!

1. If we as people have collec&vely yearned to return to the

Land of Israel for two thousand years, and today we have

the ability to go, but we choose to remain living outside of

Israel, do we, should we, feel differently when we sing

Psalm 137 or 126 which speak about yearning for the return

to Zion? Is it an impera&ve for Jews today to consider Aliya?!

Great Jewish Music on the Verizon Hall Stage:!

SING HALLELUJAH! !

MARCH 21, VERIZON HALL, 8 PM!

!

For the very first &me, as part of the Kimmel Center Organ Series, Jewish music for Cantorial soloists,

choruses, and the Frederick J. Cooper organ will be heard in the most pres&gious concert hall in our community, Verizon

Hall! Over 180 singers will be assembled for this unique performance. This Organ Series is endowed by the Haas Founda-

&on. The Haas family financed the installa&on of the magnificent organ in Verizon Hall, named for Frederick J. Cooper,

grandfather of the Haas family. !!

My dear friend, Hazzan David Tilman, will be music director and conductor for this concert. I am fortunate enough to

have been chosen as soloist for one of the wonderful pieces which will be in this concert, “ S’u Shearim” by Samuel

Naumbourg. With my background as a professional choir singer and in the Opera, I have a special love for this piece,

which some think of as similar in style to both Verdi and Rossini, two of my favorite composers. !!

You will get to hear ten Cantorial soloists from throughout the Delaware Valley. Members of our own “Kol Sholom” Adult

Volunteer Choir will join singers from the Old York Road congrega&ons as part of the choral !

coali&on performing in this magnificent event.!!

The other choirs include Nashirah, Center City; Sharim V’Sharot, Ewing, New Jersey; Beth El Adult Choir, Voorhees, NJ:

Temple Beth Sholom, Cherry Hill, NJ; the Chamber Singers, Haverford/Bryn Mawr Colleges; and members of the Cantors

Assembly of the Delaware Valley, the organiza&on of Conserva&ve Hazzanim.!!

The mandate was to select music that demonstrates both the beauty and versa&lity of the Frederick J. Cooper Organ. The

chosen repertoire is from 19th and 20th century European, Israeli, and American/Jewish composers. There will be two

works by Leonard Bernstein in commemora&on of the Bernstein Centennial: his seUng of Hashkiveinu and the immortal

Chichester Psalms, which you may be familiar with from our own Bernstein concert not long ago.!!

This repertoire was chosen from a &me in our Jewish musical history when most Reform and Conserva&ve congrega&ons

featured the organ as part of the High Holiday, Shabbat, and Fes&val worship program. While many congrega&ons no

longer use an organ, this concert and venue will give you the perfect opportunity to hear this great music in a grand man-

ner in which few ever have the opportunity to experience it. DO NOT MISS this auspicious Jewish musical event in our

community! !!

In fact, a great Passover seder is one in which we can learn from all those with whom we share the experience; pas-

sionate disagreement is one of the ways in which we can grow most deeply because we can further clarify the posi-

&ons we hold most dearly. !

!

So let’s drink a L’chaim to Passover sedarim filled with both wide�ranging discussions and lots of respecVul disagree-

ments! For such is the path in which Redemp&on will truly draw near. !

!

When I matriculated at Villanova University, I took a course on Poli&cal Philosophy. A young Dan Regan, !

who later became an icon at the university and who I recently learned passed away last year at the age !

of 80, was the course instructor. He was very popular early into his teaching career which made this a

! ! very sought�aJer class. I was fortunate to get a spot. Regan covered philosophers from Plato and

Aristotle through Karl Marx and he would assume the role of each philosopher and defend their posi&ons against the

refuta&ons of my classmates. My favorite was Machiavelli whose most famous work, “The Prince”, could best be summed

up by the phrase ‘the ends jus&fy the means.’!!

Now, as I enter the last few months of my presidency at Beth Sholom, I have begun to self�reflect. Was my philosophy for

the future of Beth Sholom correct? Did I fail to convince our congrega&on that change is necessary and healthy? Certainly

my posi&on at Beth Sholom would have been easier if I were a Machiavellian prince or just a run of the mill dictator.

Rather, I took the posi&on that the congrega&on needs to be educated, and needs to be heard. Board minutes are

distributed to the en&re congrega&on to ensure transparency. Town hall mee&ngs during my first year and just last month

gave every congregant the opportunity to hear and be heard. !!

Despite all of this, I remain troubled by what I perceive is a philosophy of stagna&on in our congrega&on. In the recent

publica&on of Jewish Philanthropy, Rabbi Joshua Rabin wrote an ar&cle called “Build your synagogue out of Legos, not

bricks.” He writes, ‘there is a persistent danger in leUng any model become so dominant that it becomes impossible to try

something new for fear of upseUng the established order. Any box of Legos includes an instruc&on manual, yet over &me

the enduring power of Legos is the way in which new crea&ons can be made if we refuse to be overly a>ached to the

original playbook.’!!

He concludes, ‘Today, too many synagogue leaders with whom I work serve under the shadow of a depressing equilibrium,

where they know that the model they inherited is unsustainable, yet fear the disrup&on of even a step towards radical

change. But the journey to transform synagogues does not begin with a technical change, but a mindset change, a way of

dreaming a synagogue model that is portable, adaptable, and experimental. Our synagogues are literally and

metaphorically made of bricks, built with blood, sweat and tears, yet too oJen paralyzed by the very systems we created.

My prayer is … that we might embrace models of Jewish life flexible enough for us to be>er serve the Jews of today and be

prepared to adapt once again to serve the Jews of tomorrow.’ !!

In my final months of service to you, I will con&nue to embrace the need for change, con&nue to be fiscally responsible,

and con&nue to value your input. !

rael’s ac&ons a reflec&on on all Jews, and if so, should we then be able as Jews to advocate with the government of Isra-

el on behalf of the Jewish People? Or do you believe that one must live there to have a stake in the future of the State?!

3. What is our responsibility to visit Israel? If it is a mitzva to go to Israel, how oJen do we need to go to fulfil that mitz-

va?!

4. How can we be>er relate to our many millennials who do not feel a good connec&on to Israel?!

Have you ever a>ended The Shabbat Experience? The

Shabbat Experience is a program unique to Beth Sholom,

and is in its 9th year. Since 2008, we have explored

Shabbat, Mitzvot, Israel, Prayer, the Jewish Life Cycle,

Middot (character traits), Prophets and this year, Holidays.

Some themes have been studied more than once, but each

Shabbat Experience, about 60 in all, has been different in

format and in learning. !!

The premise of The Shabbat Experience is that learning

happens best by doing and that the beauty of Shabbat is

something that is best understood as a joyful and lived

experience. By employing methods that are used at Jewish

summer camps and youth groups, The Shabbat Experience

is both hands�on and happening in real Jewish &me. These

Shabbatot each include socializing, prayer components,

Shabbat meals and learning. Our concept is that the whole

synagogue community joins together to study the same

content at age appropriate levels in concurrent sessions.

The enduring knowledge is based on a year�long theme.

Each family is offered a book for their home library with a

bookmark of suggested readings on the topic that

highlights the learning.!!

Crea&ng programs that combine all these components and

then seeing them to frui&on is no easy task. The Shabbat

Experience has an amazing and dedicated commi>ee, and

many of the members have been part of the planning since

the program’s incep&on. I must take a moment to thank

them: PaU First, Holly Lankin, Rabbi Layman, Sherri

Leibowitz, Sheryl Love, Selma Roffman, Judi Shapiro,

Doreen Shelow, Lisa Stein, Lisa Weiss�Shore, and new�

comers Jack Belitsky, Karen Dolnick and Sheldon Plam. Lisa

Weiss�Shore deserves an extra thank you for all the

beau&ful posters she makes. If you haven’t !

please do. They are full of informa&on that !

There is a lot of work that goes into a Shabbat Experience.

From the ini&al theme mee&ngs in the summer, to the

decision about what each of the dates for the year should

be about, to &tles for the theme and the individual

Experiences, to a curriculum, an implementa&on and the

set up on the actual day, it takes hours to create what

seems like a flawless program. If you’ve never had the

chance to pour 300 cups of grape juice, create and hang

posters, copy handouts, or any of a large number of tasks

to make that Shabbat’s program incredible, volunteer to

help us any &me!!!

The most wonderful thing about The Shabbat Experience

and the commi>ee is the chance to collaborate, both

physically and mentally, and the opportunity to learn. Even

as the theme this year is holidays, there is so much to learn

and so much to teach each other. Did you know that the

Jewish calendar is organized around moon phases?

Probably. But you might not know that if you look at the

night sky and see a full moon, you’ll know it’s the 15th of

the Hebrew month. This is just one small piece of the

learning from this year.!!

help plan for the 2018�19 Shabbat Experience year. We

welcome everyone, no prior knowledge needed. Come to

help plan, but in the process make new friends, learn

interes&ng and thought provoking informa&on and

Orchestra of Exiles!!

It is oJen only in retrospect that we can discover the true shapers of history. One such man is

the prodigious Polish violinist Bronislaw Huberman. Orchestra of Exiles, a film which explores

this great man's 4�year odyssey, culminates in the founding of the orchestra that would

become the Israel Philharmonic. During the darkest days of a Europe being torn apart by an&�Semi&sm and Nazi

aggression, Huberman's extraordinary efforts saved hundreds of Jewish families from the approaching Holocaust and his

achievements changed the landscape of cultural history. Before the Nazis came to power Huberman was focused only on

building his own monumental career; witnessing Hitler's agenda was a call to ac&on that Huberman could not ignore.

Huberman's personal transforma&on and subsequent heroic struggle to get Jewish musicians out of Europe to found this

orchestra is at the heart of this film.!

Center for Spiritual Well�being!Stacey Salsman�

On Thursday evening, May 17th the Center for Spiritual Well�being (CSWB) and our !

surrounding community will be joined by author, speaker, and mental health advocate, Liza!

Long and her son, Eric Walton. Liza Long is an author, educator, and mother of four !

children, one of whom has bipolar disorder. His name is Eric Walton. !!

It was during Eric’s fourth hospitaliza�on, a result of the rages and tantrums that defined his childhood, when a

man on the other side of the country murdered his mother and then massacred first graders at Sandy Hood

Elementary School. The tragedy shook Liza, who immediately thought of her own son who was, at the �me,

sedated in a psychiatric ward. She thought…”It could have been him. It could have been me.” That night she

wrote a blog post �tled, “I am Adam Lanza’s Mother.” She wrote “I live with a son who is mentally ill. I love my

son. But he terrifies me.”!

Her blog post went viral and since then she has gone on to become a mental health awareness advocate ap-

pearing on the Today Show, Good Morning America, Anderson Cooper 360, Dr. Oz, NPR's Weekend Edi�on,

and other programs. She presented talks on children’s mental health and s�gma at TEDx San Antonio in Octo-

ber 2013 and at the Na�onal Council for Behavioral Health in March 2016. !!

During this �me, her son remained anonymous and withheld himself from television and radio interviews. A

psychiatrist from Connec�cut saw Long’s blog post and iden�fied Eric’s symptoms as bipolar disorder. A%er

more than a decade of misdiagnoses and failed medica�ons, overnights in hospitals, and juvenile jails, Walton,

with this psychiatrists’ help, is in control of his own life.!!

As I sit down to write my ar&cle, there is excitement all

around us as we start this Spring season with our home

team, the Eagles, winning the Superbowl. !!

Sisterhood has a busy season ahead. Our January mee&ng

included a fabulous movie called “School Ties” with a lovely

lunch. This winter has been brutally cold, and as we

approach March, hopefully Spring is geUng closer and so is

daylight savings &me. !!

We welcome Purim on February 28 and March 1, and we

head to Synagogue to hear the whole Megillah, aka “The

Book of Esther”. Purim is a celebra&on of Queen Esther, the

heroine of Purim. Her amazing story contains lessons that

apply to all of us, namely believe in your hidden powers.

Esther’s name means “hidden” in Hebrew. She hid her

iden&ty as a Jew in the palace of the Persian King

Ahasuerus. !!

Join us Wednesday, March 21 at 10:00 am with Rabbi Philip

Warmflash, CEO of Jewish Learning Venture. He will speak

about where the Jewish Community is going and what is a

Jewish Family. These ques&ons are both exci&ng and

challenging. Don’t miss this presenta&on.!!

Get ready, set, go. That’s how fast Pesach approaches. We

read the Haggadah, the retelling of the Exodus tale. We

gather around the table with our families and friends while

we eat matzah to symbolize the haste with which the

Hebrews fled slavery in Egypt. We pray that this season of

As I write this the Eagles are heading to Minnesota to play

the New England Patriots in the big game (can’t say Super

Bowl without paying a royalty). Life is good for us die hard

Eagle fans and life is good with the Beth Sholom Men’s

Club. Throughout the past few months we enjoyed some

wonderful events and celebrated and honored our

members, so I offer you this re�cap for those who were

unable to par&cipate. !

On December 10, 2017 Beth Sholom hosted the Middle

Atlan&c Region of the Federa&on of Jewish Men’s Clubs

“Man of the Year” dinner in the filled to capacity Fischman

Auditorium, where Steve Perlman received his award,

along with Men of the Year from other MAR synagogues.

Our own Art Lashin, who is serving as the MAR president,

presided over the program with special assistance from

Rabbis Merow and Glanzberg�Krainin and Cantor Weber.

The cocktail hour and dinner food this year was delicious. !

We had mul&ple weekly winners all season long in our

Fundraiser High�Low football pool and the survivor pool

winner was Jus&n Tabas. You should make it a priority to

play next year if you did not par&cipate this year. Thanks to

everyone who played and once again to Don Sable for

overseeing the pools.!

On December 4, 2017 over a dozen Men’s Club members

and family members a>ended Jewish Heritage Night at the

76ers when they played the Phoenix Suns. Although the

76ers lost that night, there was plenty of Jewish

entertainment and kosher food.!

The World Wide Wrap was celebrated at Beth Sholom this

year with our brethren at Adath Jeshurun and Melrose

B'nai Israel EmanuEl on the morning of the big game �

Sunday, February 4, 2018. We were honored to learn with

Rabbi Isaac Leizerowski, Sofer STa"m, who taught us about

the sacred work of crea&ng and repairing Torahs, tefillin

and mezzuzot. Everyone enjoyed a tasty breakfast

prepared by Ata and Gary Goldberg.!

Men’s Club Shabbat was held on February 17, 2018 and

thanks to the hard work of our religious vice president

Steve Pilchik, everything was fantas&c. The en&re service

was led by volunteer Men’s Club members who chanted all

the alliyot and prayers. We can always use more help so

please make a note to yourself and par&cipate next year.

We have both English and Hebrew reading parts available.!

Men’s Club has purchased group &ckets to the Smoke and

Mirrors Magic Theater in Hun&ngdon Valley on Saturday

night March 17, 2018 to see Gino Mozzarella perform his

magic. Tickets are $25 each but we only have a limited

number of seats. If you are interested in

a>ending, contact me.!

On March 25, 2018, we will once again

assemble boxes, pack and mail Yom

HaShoah Yellow Candles to all

congregants. We welcome all volunteers and will even

serve bagels and coffee to all who come that morning at

8:30 am in the Fischman Auditorium. When you receive

your candle it should be lit on Thursday evening April 12

and placed in your window as a remembrance of the

memory of the Six Million who perished in the Shoah. The

candles resemble a tradi&onal Jewish Yahrzeit candle and

will be mailed along with a prayer to be recited.!

Also on the morning of March 25, BSMC members will help

pack and deliver kosher Passover food for Project H.O.P.E.

(Helping Our People Everywhere) to over 600 needy

families in our area. To help, email me. !

SoJball season will be star&ng up again and the two BSMC

teams will open “spring training”. If you are interested in

There are many, many ways in which people can perform mitzvot b’yahad� good deeds together. Some find it meaningful

and fulfilling to volunteer in our Mitzvah Food Pantry or to prepare meals with our Cook for a Friend groups or the Meal

Train offered by our Shul Buddies; some like to par&cipate in our Helene’s Heroes Blood Drives or enjoy making blankets

for our annual MLK Day Kare4Kids Make a Difference project; others want to help those who need to say Kaddish for a

loved one by a>ending evening minyanim, or they a>end Lunch and Learn programs that present a wide variety of issues

and opportuni&es to get involved in ac&ve mitzvah work. Even in today’s polarized communi&es, we can all agree that

there is a great deal of healing and compassion needed. It is our goal to promote and support ac&on that cul&vates

&kkun olam� repairing the world.!!

On March 3 the annual Reitenberg Memorial Program & Luncheon will sponsor a Lunch and Learn about the nonprofit

volunteer Jewish organiza&on NA’AMAT USA. This organiza&on partners with NA’AMAT Israel to provide vital

educa&onal and social services for women, children and families in need in Israel. !!

Our speakers will be: Ange Nadel, Director of Eastern Area and Deborah Troy�Stewart, Former Eastern Area

Coordinator, both of NA’AMAT USA; and Selma Roffman, Beth Sholom congregant and organizer of the local Rimonim

Chapter, NA’AMAT USA. !!

NA’AMAT advocates for gender equality, child welfare and women’s rights. Its current work in Israel includes:

educa&onal programs in technological high schools for at risk teenagers that give them training and support; a new

Women’s Center in Sderot which is a safe and caring home for women that offers classes on health, nutri&on and

empowerment; and safe, nurturing day care centers for thousands of children who need a>en&on and care. PLEASE JOIN

News from the Preserva-on Founda-on!Thoughts from Docent Toni Resnick!

As we approach Pesach, I can't help but think about our building's place in

the retelling of the Israelites journey through the Sinai desert. As a docent,

I've had the good fortune of recalling the passage through the desert as I

lead our guests through the internal landscape of our building. I show them how Frank Lloyd Wright used the changing

light to create shapes from shadows and to cast colors on floors and walls. If a visitor is fortunate enough to arrive when

the sun is siUng in the western sky, they will experience these miraculous changes on the walls in the Main Sanctuary.

They see how the panels lighten and darken, how colors change on the western wall of the room, and if it's late enough,

witnessing the light from the fountain make its way across the eastern wall, eventually hovering over the Aron Kodesh

before moving on and vanishing as mysteriously as it appeared. I never &re of experiencing this along with our visitors.

There have been numerous &mes when we sat quietly on the western wall, just to soak in the beauty and grandeur of the

sanctuary.!

The Visitor Center receives many visitors who are Frank Lloyd Wright enthusiasts, and aJer seeing many incredible FLW

buildings, marvel at our building's beauty and art form. We also host guests from all over the world, many architects

coming from Spain and Japan. This past week, we had our very first visitors from Bolivia! By the end of our journey through

the building, guests usually express my good fortune at having daily access to such a magnificent structure. They are right.

We are all very fortunate indeed. It is Beth Sholom's very own desert sanctuary.!

Joseph Myerov was called to the choir

loJ of Beth Sholom Congrega&on as

the successor to Gedaliah Rabinowitz in

1954, and he has served this congrega-

&on ever since, over 64 years, and

coun&ng!! What a blessing he has

been for this community! He has

served Beth Sholom Congrega&on in so

many capaci&es: choirmaster, organist,

pianist, composer and arranger in resi-

dence, adviser and counselor to the

Cantors and Rabbis, accompanist for all

our choirs both within this building and

in far flung loca&ons! He has been on

the staff of Beth Sholom Congrega&on

longer than any other synagogue pro-

fessional in the 99�year history of our

beloved Congrega&on!!!

Joseph has been an essen&al and inval-

uable presence in this community in so

many varied capaci&es. Joe came here

to be choirmaster at a &me when the

congrega&on employed a superb pro-

fessional choir who led the davening

with the Cantor at every Shabbat, Fes&-

val, and High Holiday service. He ex-

panded his professional role into every

corner of this facility bringing his amaz-

ing talents as pianist extraordinaire,

organist, accompanist, music arranger,

composer, and singer to every group

within the congrega&onal family. He

responded with affirma&ve intensity

and adapted to new and changing con-

grega&onal tastes.!!

As a composer, he has wri>en 19

seUngs of Hashkiveinu, at least four

complete seUngs of the Shabbat even-

ing service, including Simchat Shabbat

wri>en in 1969 in honor of Beth Shol-

om 50, original music for the High Holi-

day and Fes&val Services, a melodic

and serene wedding service, major ex-

tended works for our Beth Sholom Mu-

sic Fes&vals, including Who Knows

Be>er Than Israel; Israel, My Precious

Israel, and Psalm 150. His vocal ar-

rangement of four Jerusalem Songs has

been published by Transcon&nental

Music, and is sung by children and

adult choirs across North America.!!

In reflec&ng on our shared professional

experiences, I want to tell you that

there was no task too small or too large

for Joe Myerov. !!

I would call Joe to play the piano or the

organ for the Alef Consecra&on Cere-

mony of the eight�year�old students in

the Beth Sholom Religious School every

year, and he always said YES. He ac-

companied me at the Perelman Jewish

Day School Model Seder for years. Joe

came whenever I asked him to accom-

pany the Beth Sholom Youth Chorale at

the Israel Day Parade, on television

programs, at concerts in Grossinger’s

Hotel, in Albany, NY, in Palm Beach,

Florida. !!

He played concert grand pianos, out�of�

tune uprights, and even dinky electron-

ic instruments, and he made magnifi-

cent music on all of them. !!

“Joe, I need an arrangement for the

Religious School marching band,” and

he delivered it in two days. !!

“Joe, we are having 40 members of the

Philadelphia Orchestra coming here,

and I need a full and complete sympho-

ny arrangement featuring every sym-

phonic instrument of the “Landes

Hashkiveinu,”(wri>en for Rabbi

Landes’s 25th anniversary),” and it was

on my desk in two weeks, with all the

parts copied out and ready to play.!!

“Joe, the Sisterhood is presen&ng a

group of parody Broadway songs with

words by Doris Dion Z”L, and they need

you to accompany at three rehearsals.”

He was there promptly radia&ng charm

and musical exper&se regardless of the

variable talent level of the singers! !!

“Joe, I need you to sing tenor in the

Rosenbla> Tal/prayer for dew, on the

first day of Pesach,” and you were

there with me as you, the Quartet, and

I sang your arrangement of this great

Cantorial piece!!!

Joe was present when I audi&oned for

the first &me at Beth Sholom in Decem-

ber 1974. The commi>ee filed into the

main sanctuary in the dead of winter

wearing coats and gloves. Joe went up

to the choir loJ, and I stood, shivering

on the Bimah.!!

He played organ at my second inter-

view in March 1975. Joe and I, togeth-

er with Lillian Kane Z”L, Louise Onye>

Love, Ray Barish, and Meyer Stein Z”L,

the first Beth Sholom Quartet in my

era, began preparing for the High Holi-

days in June 1975, and we worked non�

stop on the Jewish musical life in our

congrega&on for 36 fruiVul years. You

con&nue to be of great assistance to

Cantor Weber in so many ways.!!

Joe, you have enabled the prayers of

our community to ascend to the gates

of Heaven because of your talents,

your good cheer, and your friendship.!!

I know all present join me in praying for

much good health, happiness, and con-

the new K�6 Parent Social Group, field trips to local a>rac&ons for Preschool�6th grade families, placement of children's

bookshelves in the back of the main sanctuary to assist with integra&on of preschool families into the main congrega&on,

revamping the Shul buddies program to match new members with established members with similar interests, revamping

the Chesed Comm>ee, welcome giJs for new members, and support for Congrega&on�wide collabora&ons, such as the

Israel 70 event planned for Saturday, April 21st. !!

JQuest B’Yachad! Rabbi Stacy Rigler�

February was Jewish Disabili&es Inclusion and Awareness month. In honor of this month I thought I might share some of

the ways we try to teach each child “al pi darcho” according to his/her needs. As part of our JQuest B’Yachad registra&on

process, we ask parents to iden&fy learning styles (auditory, visual, or kinesthe&c) as well as whether they do or do not

need support socially when working in groups or in new seUngs. Through this informa&on teachers are able to construct

groups for projects and ask students specific ways to par&cipate based on their strengths. Teachers are able to see how

their students learn best and try to tailor their lessons in this way. At JQuest we try to support all of our students,

regardless of diagnosis or disability.!!

We do recognize that some students need more. We know that fair is not equal and our job is to give each child what they

need. For students that do need special supports we are lucky to have our site supervisor, Holli Goldenberg, who reaches

out to parents to check in with how we can best support children in our seUng. We have special needs professionals and

teens trained by Jewish Learning Venture who provide one on one and i&nerant support for students. We also group all

students in small Hebrew learning seUngs so they can get the individual a>en&on they need without feeling social

pressures. This year we have also introduced behavior reward systems and fidget toys, trying to be more proac&ve to help

our students learn best. !!

When I was a child, most of the kids in our religious school looked the same. For students who needed accommoda&ons

or extra help there were not great alterna&ves:; the synagogue space was oJen a place where we did not see children

with disabili&es. I am so grateful to work in a seUng where inclusion is a priority and part of our core mindset. If you are

reading this and think we can be doing more to include a child or a family who needs support, I hope you will reach out to

me. As an educator I believe strongly that it is our religious obliga&on to support and care for each child and try to bring as

many children as possible into our building in a way that they feel comfortable and supported so they can learn and grow

and thrive Jewishly. So here’s to Jewish Disabili&es Inclusion and Awareness month! !

What does Kehillah mean to you? Some may remember

summers with your closest friends at summer camp, others

can't help but smile thinking of all the weekends you spent

with your USY friends at conven&ons. To me, Kehillah is a

trip down memory lane through the hallways of Beth

Sholom with my friends, laughing, learning (even when we

were grumpy and &red teenagers), but I wouldn't have

wanted to grow up with anyone else. It's so special to watch

this happen with our youth. I see it with our

Kindergarteners � sixth graders at JQuest laughing in the

hallways; Friday night Shabbat dinners when the kids don't

want to eat because they only want to be playing together;

Shabbat morning, leading alongside teens I once taught,

with the new genera&on singing along in prayer. One day

they will look back and realize the most special Kehillah

they are a part of is their Beth Sholom Family � I know I did. !
