Zotero Commons
• A long time coming• http://www.dancohen.org/2007/12/12/zotero-and-the-internet
-archive-join-forces/• The promise:
• Public archive for digital research material• Permanent storage at Internet Archive• Permanent, unique archive URLs• Tight integration with Zotero client
3
APIs
• Client API• Access local Zotero client• Useful to extend Zotero via Firefox add-ons
Application Programming Interfaces
4
5
APIs
• Web API• Access data of online Zotero account• Read-only for now, read/write in the works• Documentation forthcoming
Application Programming Interfaces
6
Standalone Client
• Independent of Firefox• No need to install & run Firefox• More efficient use of screen real estate (netbooks)• Integration with other browsers (Google Chrome, Safari) via
APIs

Citation Style Language (CSL) 1.0
• Citation styles describe formatting of citations and bibliographies:
(Abbott et al. 2009; R. M. Zelle et al. 2008)
Abbott, D.A. et al., 2009. Metabolic engineering of Saccharomyces cerevisiae for production of carboxylic acids: current status and challenges. FEMS Yeast Research, 9(8), 1123-1136. Zelle, R.M. et al., 2008. Malic acid production by Saccharomyces cerevisiae: engineering of pyruvate carboxylation, oxaloacetate reduction, and malate export. Applied and Environmental Microbiology, 74(9), 2766-2777.

Citation Style Language (CSL) 1.0
• Free and open XML language• Current status
• Zotero 2.0 and Mendeley both support CSL 0.8• Over a thousand CSL 0.8 styles available at
www.zotero.org/styles• CSL 1.0 released in March 2010
• New in CSL 1.0:• Localization• Name particles• Rich text in titles• A maturing project

CSL 1.0 – Name Particles
• Names with particles:• Charles de la Bédoyère• Ludwig van Beethoven• Wikus van de Merwe
• Styles differ in the treatment of particles for name rendering and sorting• "van de Merwe, W." or "Merwe, W. van de"• "van de Merwe, W." can be sorted either at 'V' or at 'M'
• CSL 1.0 has a setting for these style differences
12
CSL 1.0 – Name Particles
• Why bother?• From a personal email:
Dear Dr. Zelle,
Your manuscript ... has been accepted for publication ....
I note that in the References section, the names "van Dijken" and "van Maris" are alphabetized by the letters "D" and "M," respectively. Per … Instructions to Authors, these should both be alphabetized by the letter "V" as that represents the first letter of the surname.

13
CSL 1.0 – Rich Text in Titles
• Support for superscript, subscript, italics, bold and SMALL CAPS
• Zelle, R.M. et al., 2010. Key process conditions for production of C4 dicarboxylic acids in bioreactor batch cultures of an engineered Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain. Applied and Environmental Microbiology, 76(3), 744-750.
14
CSL 1.0 – A Maturing Project
• CSL 1.0 comes with (updated) documentation• Several developers have shown interest• CSL processors (standalone software libraries)
• citeproc-js (JavaScript): CSL 1.0 compatible, available now, currently being integrated into Zotero for 2.1 release
• Other processors under development: PHP, Haskell, Python
