SIBERIAN TIGERS: A FIRST IN CLEVELAND
"Elli ott" and "Princess" quarrel over the possession of a water crock. The male cu b asserts his domi na nce in disputes of this ki nd.
The Cleveland Zoo can now boast of its pair of Siberian Tigers (Panthera tigris altaica ) which arrived here in late summer.
The male, "Elliott" was born in the Lincoln Park Zoo, Chicago, on April 16 t his year and the female, "Princess" was born in the Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Zoo on May 10.
The two new cubs are the first Siberian Tigers ever to live in the Cleveland Zoo. The significance of this lies in the fact that there is a total of between 350 and 500 Siberian Tigers living in the entire world. T o say that this is an endangered species is a major understatement. Without the help of zoos and conservat ionist s, this magnif
icent animal could quite easily go the way of the dodo bird.
Siberian Tigers are much heavier built cats than the Bengal Tigers and large males can weigh 800 pounds or more.
At one time this subspecies was rather abundant in the Soviet Far East, northeastern China and north Korea. The area was broadly the Amur River Basin. Presently, the wild population is est imated at between 160 and 190 individuals in widely isolat ed areas. The captive population numbers about 160.

Typical of cat instinct, these young tigers, pounce upon each other, and with ears back, show tooth and claw in mock battle. Little, if any., damage i. done, however. When play gets too rough, they separate by mutual consent.

GIRAFFE POPULATION INCREASED BY TWO
A female Masai Giraffe born September 5, 1973, and a male, born October 11th increased the Zoo's giraffe family from three to five and has caused a minor space problem in the Pachyderm Building. With the onset of cold weather, the adult male was put into one of the indoor rooms. The two females with their babies shared the other room. The young female was the largest
giraffe ever born at our zoo; the birth weight was estimated at 150 to 160 pounds. The youngster had difficulty standing and had to be assisted to her feet by keepers and other Zoo personnel.
Both youngsters are getting along quite nicely and are destined to be residents of the new Toronto, Canada, Zoo, sometime next spring.
On September 5th a female giraffe was born to "Twiggy". Twigg y's second baby wao the largest gira ffe baby ever born here.

ZIPPITY ZOO DOD A RESOUNDING SUCCESS
The first Zip pity Zoo Night, a gala social affair for the benefit of the Zoo was a glorious success.
Held on Wednesday evening, June 20, some 600 Zoo enthusiasts enjoyed every moment, from cocktails at 6 p.m. to the program of entertainment at 9 : 30 p.m.
An aura of festiveness permeated the Zoo grounds as huge colorful tents were set up on the mall opposite Monkey Island, and near the Bird Building. Billed as a "progressive party", patrons began the evening at the cocktail tent , were then transported by Zoo trains to the salad tent at the Bird Building and shuttled again by t rain to the Main Tent where dinner was served, followed by the mini-circus program of animal acts (elephants, chimpanzees and bears).
T he 600 patrons were "panda bears" ($50 per couple), "deer" ($100 per couple) , "lions" ($500 per couple) and " elephants" ($ 1,000 per couple) .
Special attractions such as Murray Hill's elephan t rides, and hurdy-gurdy Arnold Masino, presented diversionary entertain-

ment prior to the dinner hour. Hough Catering prepared the evening's
menu, beginning with cocktails, continuing with Vichysoisse and salads, filet of beef entree, and ambrosia dessert.
The Cleveland Zoo Women's Committee, headed by chairman M rs. James H. Coolidge I II, carried out a brilliant idea for helping to raise money for the Zoo. Zoo Doo Co-Chairmen, M rs. William B. Belden and Mrs. Wallace B. Quail, aided by a host of other Women's Committee members, were responsible for the smashing success of the first such social event ever held for the benefit of the Zoological Park.
The only sour note came toward the end of the evening when the unpredictable Cleveland weather brought a thunderstorm with accompanying strong gusts of wind. T he bad weather cut short the entertainment by about 15 minutes.
Immediately after dinner, a portrait of M r. Frederick C. Crawford, Chairman of the Board of the Cleveland Zoological Society, was presented t o Bluecoats and the Cleveland Zoological Society in honor of M r. Crawford 's dedicated services to both organizations. T he portrait was rend

Following the evening affair, Zippity Zoo Day, held on Thursday, June 21, began with a parade, led by Burger King. The day's activities included a magician, clown shows, a puppet show, children's games, and a unicyclist group fron St. H elen School, Newbury, Ohio.
Socially and financially the first Zippity Zoo Doo was a grand success and plans are already being laid for another similar event next J une.
T he Women's Committee of the Cleveland Zoo can well be proud of its efforts which rendered the two day affair such a resounding success.

FIRST KING PENGUIN CHICK REARED SUCCESSFULLY AT THE CLEVELAND ZOO
The first successful rearing of a King Penguin chick here, occurred this year. The baby was hatched on August 2 and was carefully tended by the mother who had incubated the egg for 54 days. The male penguin had also been incubating an egg during the same period, but unfortunately, the egg rolled off his feet and was broken. It is unknown whether that egg was fertile or infertile.
After the successful hatching, mother penguin was quite possessive and allowed none of the other penguins in the penguin room near the baby for a number of weeks.
There had been apprehension as to whether the youngster would survive, inasmuch as last year a chick had hatched, only
to die after 19 days due to peritonitis , caused by small stones regurgitated by the mother into the chick's digestive system.
This year, happily, an incident of this nature did not occur and presently, the chick is nearly the size of its parents, although it still has the juvenile downy gray plumage instead of the adult contrasted black and white coloration.
The hatching and rearing of King Penguins in captivity is not a frequent occurrence. Inasmuch as foreign birds are forbidden into the country at the present time, this young bird is a most welcome addition at the Bird Building, and hopefully, just a forerunner of many more in the future!

ALBINO WALLABY
A very valuable addition to the marsupial group at the Zoo was made during the summer.
A male albino Bennett's Wallaby and a companion female, carrying the albino genetic factor were acquired on July 20, 1973.
The male, white in color and having pink eyes, is quite a sight, standing out quite prominently in the paddock next to the Zoo's other marsupials, the Giant Red Kangaroos.
Albinos have no pigmentation in the hair or skin. The hair, therefore, is white, and lack of eye color shows the eyes pinkt he result of the eye blood vessels near the surface, reflecting light.
T he chances of this pair of wallabies having an albino baby is 50-50 as the color factor is a simple dominant-recessive character .
A pair of BenneH's Wallabies are a n outstanding exhibit. The male, an albino, is w hite with pink eyes and no.se. The fema le, a normal brown color, cames the albino fa cto r. A baby, currently in the pouc h, has a 50-50 cha nce of being a lbino.

ALL-TIME ONE-DAY ATTENDANCE RECORD SET
On Saturday, July 14th, the all-time oneday attendance record was set when 25,923 people attended McDonald's Day at the Zoo.
McDonald's Restaurants of Northeastern Ohio promoted the day which featured R onald McDonald, and his magic shows.
Fifteen thousand free McDonald balloons were given away, and all Kiddieland Rides and Children's Farm admissions were free through the compliments of McDonald's.
All gate admissions for children between 6 and 12 years of age were also through the courtesy of McDonald's.
The previous high attendance record for one day was on Sunday, August 19, 1963 when 19,063 persons attended a Cleveland
Orchestra concert in the Zoo. The McDonald promotion included bus
cards, TV and radio spot commercials, newspaper ads and billboards.
This was one of the most successful endeavors ever held at the Zoo-a credit to the McDonald Restaurant owners and their advertising a gency, GriswoldEshleman Co.

To date, 115 hours have been devoted by the 25 guides. They have provided tours for 1,235 people for 35 separate tour groups.
The Cleveland Zoo has sponsored a new Explorer Post #483, affiliated with Boy Scouts of America.
The Explorer program is open to both boys and girls, ages 16 to 21. The primary purpose is to gain insight in a specific field, in this case, zoology, biology, environmental science, and veterinary medicine.
A total of 35 Explorers enrolled in the charter meeting at the Zoo, November 8th.
Meetings will be held on the first and third Thursdays of each month at 7: 30 p.m. in the Zoo's Administ ration-Education Building. All phases ofthe Zoo's operation will be covered in the continuing program. Special emphasis will, of course, be placed on the care of the Zoo's animal residents. Voracek and Richard Merrill. Assisting are members of the docent staff, Joyce Peden, Jeff Pifer, and Jo Anderson.
SQUARE DANCE The first square dance ever held at the
Zoo was sponsored by Cilo-Teens on Sunday, August 12.
The dance was staged on the level grassy area in front of the Ape and Cat Building and many zoo visitors watched the int ricat e steps of the C-T dancers.

CLEVELAND ZOO OFFERS LIMITED EDITION COLLECTOR'S ITEM PRINTS BY NATIONALLY
RENOWNED ARTIST RAY HARM The Cleveland Zoological Society
through Frame House Gallery, Louisville, Kentucky, is pleased to announce the availability of the Reticulated Giraffe Print from the Gallery's Ray Harm African Wildlife Series.
The Reticulated Giraffe Print is part of a limited edition of the artist's paintings. Because prints of his work are highly popular and are published in limited editions, they often sell out rapidly and become valuable collector 's items. An example of the appreciated value of his prints is his Eagle and Osprey print of 1964. This title sold at $75.00 and today the collector's value is placed at $2,000. A 1963 Bald Eagle Family print sold for $30 .00. Its value today is $650.00.
The Cleveland Zoo has obtained 500 of these signed prints which are available to the readership of this publication on a first-come, first-served basis. These beautiful full color prints are 20" x 28" in size.
The current fair market value of the print is $50; therefore, one-half of t he purchase price is deductible as a charitable contribut ion on federal income tax returns. Everyone who purchases one of these prints will receive an invit a tion to meet Mr. Harm at a reception to be held after all zoo prints have been sold. Mr. Harm will personally sign each print at the reception.
The purchase of one of t hese Giraffe prints will be of benefit t wo ways: a tax return deduction ($50) and a print which will appreciate in value in future years. A third benefit is that t he Zoo will derive most of t he funds from the sale of these print s.
Don't be disappointed; send your order and check in now. An order blank is printed for your convenience.
T o obtain one of these prints, a check in the amount of $100 is to be sent to The Cleveland Zoological Society, Box 09040, Cleveland, Ohio 44109.
