How is the Body Horror genre

conveyed? The body horror genre is almostimmediately obvious as the secondscene is of a disfigured and mutilated

man throwing up blood. The sequencegoes on to show various people withno apparent link attacking people. There is a lot of fighting going onbetween the two groups, normal

civilians and zombies. The zombiesare bloody and gory, attacking normalpeople who are trying to escape.

What do the opening titles show, visually?

How is narrative enigma created here?

The opening titles are in slow motion, allowing the audience tosee clearly what is going on. We see that people have turnedinto zombies and are chasing down the remainder of people. We get the impression that this happened suddenly because

the people and zombies seem to be in the middle of differentactivities, such as a wedding and a three legged race. Eachscene is short, and there are a lot of them which shows usthat this epidemic is wide spread. Narrative enigma is createdby throwing the viewer straight into the action, with no priorexplanation as to why this is happening. Mystery is also

created here because we want to know what this is happeningand who, if anyone, is going to survive.

What is the effect of the music?

The music is the song for whom the bell tolls byMetallica. It plays throughout the opening titleswith little no other sound added in until right at

the end. The choice of music contrasts with theslow motion, but gives the impression that thefilm is going to be fast paced and exciting. At theend of the sequence, there is a smashing soundas a zombie is thrown into the camera screen. This signals the end of the sequence andheightens tension because we are going to seenow how this all came about.

    How has the typography

been used? The typography appears to theviewer to be in the world of thefilm instead of layered on top. Inthe first shot, a man falls off a

building, as he falls into thetypography, it gives way and fallstoo, as if he moved it as he fellthrough it. This happensthroughout the sequence: as aperson hits where the typographyis shown, it shatters or fallsapart, as if the person hasmoved it themselves.

How is the mise en scene

    conveyed?

There is a lot of blood in the scene. The

sequence shows a lot of different situations that

are disrupted by the zombies, for example the

wedding and the fire in the building. People aredressed for what they were doing that day.

There are also a lot of weapons, for example the

gun and the crow bar. The mise en scene shows

that people were just doing every day activitieswhen the zombies appeared and were not ready

    for the attacks.

What information is provided in the

opening sequence? We see that zombies have invaded somehow, and that

they are chasing down and killing the remaining people. The title sequence doesnt tell us how the zombies cameto exist, but shows us that they are trying to kill anyone

the find. We see that some people are fighting back, thepolicemen are trying to push them back, and one manwas shooting at them. However we dont know howsuccessful they are. This does, however, tell us that thezombies must have been around for a few days during

the sequence because people realise what is going onand are fighting back.

    How has the sequence

been edited? The sequence is mainly jump cuts.We seelots of separate scenes that are not linked inany way. There is not link between the shots. The sequence is shot in slow motion which

heightens the tension and makes us want tosee what is going to happen in the next sceneand throughout the film. The sequence alsouses fade outs to connect the shots. Thisgives the impression that this is going on

    everywhere.
