China Contract Fluor Corporation announced that its subsidiary, Fluor Mining & Metals, Inc., has been awarded phases one and two of a four-phase project for a large copper mine in the People’s Republic of China. Fluor stated that its billings under the first two phases of the work would be in excess of $10 million for engineering services. Fluor stated that the total estimated cost of the project to the Chinese would be approximately $800 million, but Fluor emphasized that phases three and four have not yet been released. China ContractFluor Corporation announced that its

subsidiary, Fluor Mining & Metals,Inc., has been awarded phases one andtwo of a four-phase project for a largecopper mine in the People’s Republicof China. Fluor stated that its billingsunder the first two phases of the workwould be in excess of $10 million forengineering services. Greg Seaman, the Port Authority’s Manager of Barbours Cut andBayport, was honored toy the U.S. Coast Guard last month when he waspresented the Coast Guard Achievement Medal. Trafpak Tank Containers, an inter-national leasing organization for bulkliquid tanks, has opened an office inHouston at 2000 West Loop South,Suite 1800, Terry J. Hatton, MarketingManager, U.S.A., announced.

Trafpak was founded in 1964 and isa wholly owned operating company ofPaktrans BV, the transportation,warehousing and distribution divisionof Pakhoed NV. C’.IIM.A. (Construction Industry Manufacturers Association), the notional association of con*struction and rood-making machinery companies recently announced that Houston will be the sitefor its ]981 convention. This is the first time the association’s convention will be held outside ofChicago. The C.I.M.A. convention is one of the world’s largest with expected attendance of morethan ]40,000 visitors. The following were chosen as the traffic committee for C.I.M.A.: S.J. Rupsch,Manager, Corporate Transportation, J.I. Case Co.; Russel Woechter, Manager, Overseas Trans-portation, Deere 8, Ca.; Bill Swisher, Chairman, C.M.I. Corporation; Frank A. Park, ManQger, Trans-portation Operations Oeere 8, Co., and Armando Waterlond, Midwestern Soles Manager, Port ofHouston, not a member of the association. Since a lot of machinery will be imported for thisexhibition, these people were put in charge of all port operations and transportation. They willserve as advisors to individuals with exhibits on how to utilize the Port of Houston.

The Port of Houston Authority traditionally presents welcoming plaques to new ships calling atHouston, but recently a sister port in Wales turned the tables and sent a plaque to Houston, Mem-bers of the Cardiff Dock Board asked the master of the M/V IVYBANK, a Bank Line vessel, to bringa plaque featuring the Cardiff insignia to Houston as a gesture of friendship. Two Navy ships called at the Port of Houston last month after participating in Gulfex 79, a jointservice training exercise in the Gulf of Mexico. Commander Raymond B. Welborn, a Houstonianwho graduated from Rice University and master of the U.S.S, MOUNT BAKER, a fleet ammunitionship, and Commander Jerry Boelsch, master of the Guided Missle Frigate U.S. RICHARD PAGES,permitted the public to visit their ships while in port. The exercise involved the U.S. Navy, Air For-ce and Coast Guard as well as ships from Great Britain. Commander John B. Bonds, of Conway,Arkansas, who also graduated from Rice University, is scheduled to become the commanding of-ficer of the MOUNT BAKER in January.

Big Pipeline ToCross Channel

A landmark pipeline constructionproject is under way by Titan Contrac-tors Corp., which has started direc-tional drilling operations to install alarge diameter petroleum productspipeline under the Houston ShipChannel.

Titan is carrying out the project forColonial Pipeline Co., the operator ofa petroleum products pipeline linkingHouston area refineries withdistribution facilities in the Southeastand along the Atlantic Seaboard.

The project will make pipelinehistory because it will be the firstcrossing of a stream by a 40-inchpipeline installed by directional drilling

Pipeline crossings of waterways areusually accomplished by dredging atrench so the pipe can be laid in it andthen buried.

PORT OF HOUSTON

Titan will use the directional drillingtechnique it has developed to install1,700 feet of pipeline under the chan-nel. In effect, it will drill a tunnel underthe channel for the pipeline to passthrough.

Industry sources said the largest suchcrossing until the Colonial crossing was

a 30-inch diameter project Titan han-dled in the Greens Bayou area forOiltanking of Texas Inc., the operatorof a terminal at Jacintoport.

The Colonial pipeline will be in-stalled in a pipeline corridor in thevicinity of Penn City Road near Jacin-toport.
