Introduction to the word by word translation

This word by word translation has been designed to encourage reading and connecting with

this ziyarat in the original Arabic text.

This format provides the reader with a quick reference for the basic meaning of the Arabic

words. As with the Quran and the words of the Ahlul Bayt (as), many words will have deeper

meanings, so the translations provided below should not be taken as absolute, but only as a

first level understanding.

The recommended way of reading the ziyarat in this format is to read it in Arabic, and only look

down at the meaning if one does not know the meaning of a particular word. The goal is to

eventually read the ziyarat in Arabic, without needing the translation at all.

We pray that this effort helps readers connect with the words of the Imams at a deeper level

such that it moves the heart and makes the reader a more devoted and sincere follower of the

Ahlul Bayt (as), and we pray that this effort is accepted by Allah and the Holy Masumeen.

Peace upon you oh father of servant of Allah

Ya Ali

Peace upon you oh son of prophet of Allah

Ya Ali

Peace upon you oh choice of Allah and the son of his choice

Ya Ali

Peace upon you oh son of the commander of the believers

Ya Ali

and the son of the master of the successors Peace upon you oh Ya Ali

son of Fatima the master of the women of the worlds

Ya Ali

Peace upon you oh (one) (whose) avenger (is) Allah and the son of

Ya Ali

one whose avenger is He and (you are) the unavenged the one who has yet to seek revenge Ya Ali

Peace upon you and upon the souls who dismounted in your vicinity*

Upon you all from me all peace of Allah forever (as long as)

*Subnote from Kamil Al-Ziyarat published by shiabooks.ca (2008): It is important to note that this

statement refers to the souls who dismounted at his vicinity and not the bodies. Therefore, the inner

meaning of this statement is, Salaam to the souls who dismounted from their bodies and were

martyred with Imam Husain and were buried with him in the same land.

Ya AlYa i oh Aba Abdillah indeed great (is) the tragedy and

the heavens upon all the people of the heavens So cursed*

Allah (the) nation (that) founded the foundation of oppression and

the injustice upon you all the people of the house and cursed Ya Ali

Allah nation drove you all from your positions and

Ya Ali

dethroned you from your posts (in) which placed you Allah Ya Ali

in it and cursed Allah (the) nation killed you all

Ya Ali

and cursed Allah the facilitators for them by enabling Ya Ali

* Although the literal meaning of is he cursed (past tense), it is commonly translated as May He

curse, similar to (literally: Allah had mercy) being translated and used as May Allah have mercy.

(in) killing you I disassociate to Allah and

Ya Ali to you from them and from their followers and

their followers and their loyalists Oh Aba Abdillah Verily I am Ya Ali

at peace with whoever is at peace with you and at war with whoever

Ya Ali

is at war with you until the day of the judgement and cursed Ya Ali

Allah the family of Ziyad and the family of Marwan

Ya Ali

and cursed Allah children of Ummayads all of them Ya Ali

and cursed Allah son of Marjanah and

Ya Ali

cursed Allah Umar son of Saad and Ya Ali

cursed Allah Shimr and cursed Allah

Ya Ali

the community (that) saddled and gave reins to and masked them Ya Ali

for fighting you By my father for you and my mother Is

difficult my calamity with you So I ask Allah who Ya Ali

he grant me to seek your revenge with an Imam supported Ya Ali

from people of the house of Muhammad send blessings Allah

on him and his family Oh Allah make me with you Ya Ali

dignified by Husain on him the peace in the dunya

and the hereafter Oh Aba Abdillah Verily I (seek) nearness Ya Ali

to Allah and to his prophet and

Ya Ali to the master of believers and to Fatima

Ya Ali

and to Hasan and to you by loyalty to you Ya Ali

and by disassociating from whoever killed you and set up

Ya Ali

(against) you war and by disassociating from whoever founded Ya Ali

the foundation of oppression and injustice upon you and

Ya Ali

I disassociate to Allah and to his prophet Ya Ali

from whoever founded the foundation (of) that and built

Ya Ali on it the structure (of oppression) and continued in its oppression

Ya Ali

and its injustice on you and on your devotees Ya Ali

I disassociate to Allah and to you from them

Ya Ali

and I seek nearness to Allah and then to you Ya Ali

by loyalty to you and loyalty to your wali and by disassociating

Ya Ali from your enemies and the ones who incited (against) you war

Ya Ali

and by disassociating from their devotees and their followers Ya Ali

Verily I am at peace (with) whoever is at peace with

you and at war

Ya Ali

(with) whoever is at war with you and a friend of whoever is a friend to you Ya Ali

and an enemy to whoever is your enemy So I ask Allah

Ya Ali

who honored me (with) knowing you and knowledge of your friends Ya Ali

and granted me disassociation from your enemies that

Ya Ali

he places me with you in the dunya and the hereafter

Ya Ali

and that he makes firm for me with you (my) foot Ya Ali

(on the path of) truth in the dunya and the hereafter and

Ya Ali

I ask him that he makes me attain the status praiseworthy (that you have)

Ya Ali with Allah and that he grants me to seek

clear speaking with the truth from you and I ask

Ya Ali Allah by your right and by the rank which you have

with him that he gives me for my suffering with you the best

what he has given a sufferer for his suffering A calamity not Ya Ali

greater than it and greater catastrophe than it in Islam

and in all the skies and the earth Ya Ali

Oh Allah make me in my place this from those who

Ya Ali

forgiveness Oh Allah make my life (like) the life of Muhammad Ya Ali

and the family of Muhammad and my death (like) the death of

Ya Ali Muhammad and the family of Muhammad Oh Allah verily

on him peace Oh Allah so multiply upon them

the curse from you and the punishment severe Oh Allah Ya Ali

verily I seek nearness to you in this day

Ya Ali

and in my stopping place this and the days of Ya Ali

my life with disassociation from them and cursing upon them

Ya Ali

and with loyalty to your prophet and the family of your prophet Ya Ali

on him and on them peace

Oh Allah curse the first oppressor oppressed the right of

Ya Ali Muhammad and the family of Muhammad and the last

Ya Ali

follower to him on this Oh Allah curse Ya Ali

the party that struggled against Husain and supported and allied

and followed on his killing Oh Allah curse them all Ya Ali

Peace upon you oh father of the servant of Allah

Upon you from me peace of Allah for ever (as long as)

Oh Allah to you (is) the praise the praise of the grateful to you

my misfortune Oh Allah grant me the intercession of Husain (on) the day of
