ESCOUNCILLORS’ CORNERWith Bishopsworth councillors Richard Eddy & Kevin Quartley

...AND THEN BACK TO OUR DAY-JOBS

Richard Eddy was returned again to represent Bishopsworth - with a 50% increase in his personal vote. Richard would want me to say on his behalf a huge ‘thank you’ to everyone who turned out to vote, we look forward to getting back to representing your interests - and will faithfully work on your behalf, whatever your natural political allegiance. WE WANT YOUR VIEWS OVER THE MALAGO GREENWAY UPGRADE

Bristol City Council is planning a major upgrade of the Malago Greenway- the path going through Malago Vale/ Manor Woods from Vale Lane, off Hartcliffe Way, to the ‘bottom shops’ of St Peter’s Rise, Bishopsworth.Council Officers have written to Richard and myself inviting you to contribute to the ideas which are to be formulated over the summer. In particular, they are looking at improving the legibility of the signage and removing/

improving the current barriers, many of which are perceived as fierce, especially to cyclists and pedestrians, including the disabled and buggy-users.What are your views? Please write to us directly or drop in your comments to Zion, clearly marked for the attention of Richard or myself.

A ‘NEW’ LOCAL COMMUNITY On 12th May 2015, the Local Government Boundary Commission for England announced new ward boundaries. These will come into effect for the May 2016 local elections. Broadly, these are welcomed. All of Bedminster Down, Uplands, Highridge, Headley Park and most of Bishopsworth will be united within the same ward boundaries.

Ow bis? Tis your old mucker, Albert Snitcher yere once more, allowed back on me Mactop after my patrimonial ‘indiscretions’ get us into a bit of bother with me missus. I tried to tell her I knew that

that Illyana was a fella the whole time and was just kidding along, but she ain’t having none of it, so at the moment I’m bunking up on Brian, me son’s sofa. To help cover the bills an that, me mate Ern has carried on lodging with Mrs S, which is gurt good of him; I did pop around the other night to see if he fancied a glider over the Crosshands, but me missus told me he was having an early night and she was reading her Forty Shades book, so I had to leave it. Dunno how she could read with all the lights off, mind, but I was glad they was saving electricity. Good job our mortgage is paid off an all, otherwise, I’d have to put even more of my pension their way.

Brian was also telling us about loads of road closes happening over the weekends this Summer as part of us being Capital of the Greens, like the other month when they closed the Portway. It was lush. I took Jose along, and it was amazing how quiet it was without all the cars on that A-road. The other couple we saw there couldn’t believe it neither. So I’s really pleased we got that company granting out the money they gave us cos we’s the Capital, so we can do it again and again. (Brian was telling us they’ve paid loads of cash to loads of locals so they can do this every year from now on). Anyways, there’s I banging on about me and I think I’ve used up all me room. I didn’t even get the chance to tell you about Jessical from Zion’s 50th birthday party (but if that’s they’re idea of a jive, they needs to watch a bit more Strickly, I tell thee). All the best, Albert Comments to [email protected]

“Significant improvements in English and maths at Bedminster Down School makes it one of the most improved school in the city”

Significant improvements in English and maths at Bedminster Down School makes it one of the most improved school in the city, according to the school performance tables published by the Department for Education (Thursday 29 January). Forty-nine per cent of all the 186 pupils sitting GCSE in 2014 gained five GCSEs grades A* - C (including English and maths) – up 13 percentage points on the previous year, one of the best on this measure for a Bristol school. Results for 2014 are also strong for English, with a massive leap from 40 to 76 per cent achiev-ing grades A* to C. Good results are also recorded for French, History and Core Science. Bedminster Down was recently judged to be ‘good’ by Ofsted – another first for the 779-pupil school.

Headteacher, Gary Schlick, said of the result: “I am pleased for all the members of the Bedminster Down community who have worked so hard to bring about the improvement recognised by the Ofsted team. With our best ever results and an across the board ‘good’ rating from Ofsted, we are well on our way to becoming the outstanding school we know we can be. 2014 was a record year for progress of students at Bedminster Down. I am particular pleased that students and teachers achieved this against the background of a changing examination system. The performance tables confirm

that we are further closing the gap for our more disadvantaged students and this will remain a focus for 2015. The work to achieve these improvements starts right at the beginning of student’s secondary school journey through the support and challenge available to us by being part of the Malago Learning Partnership which includes our main feeder primary schools.” Please look out for details of our open days in September. We look forward to seeing you.
