Foreword

Love, satisfaction and sweetness that the word 'Allah' bears in its folds is not a secret to a

person who has remembered Allah for long. This holy name is a source of life and comfort of

hearts. Allah Almighty says in the Holy Quran: . اال ثزوش هللا رطئ امة

"Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest."

Nowadays, despite having numerous ways of getting pleasure, man is still very far from peace

and harmony in his life. He is confused and wearied, and his worries manifest in different

forms. If we pause a little and think, the reason is not difficult to find

Allah Almighty says: (421: غؾ.) ي اميخ اع, ا عشض فأ عيؾخ ظىب ؾؾش

"But whosoever turns away from My Reminder, verily for him is a life of hardship,

and We shall raise him up blind on the Day of Resurrection."

It means that inspite of availability of all possible means of recreation and worldly benefits, he

will not be able to use them, and remain spiritually restless. To him, this world will become a

place, bereft and desolate:

"When this heart was like a garden, everything reflected spring,

but when this heart got desolate, everything lost its lustre."

Our Mushaikhs (saints) advise to do Zikr-e-Allah so that, human beings can realize the real

aim of the life, that is to worship Allah Almighty. This affords pleasure of Allah Almighty

and a peaceful life in this world with great reward in the Hereafter. Here, forty Hadiths

Mubarak have been collected from different sources so that, people connected with Zikr circle

and others, can understand the importance of Zikr-e-Allah. This will help them do Zikr with

renewed vigour. And if they want to invite others towards this everflowing bounty of Allah,

they can quote Hadiths from this collection.

At the end, I humbly request the readers that they should pray for my parents, teachers and I

that Allah Almighty may bless this humble person with true love of Aulia Allah. Amin.

narrated that the Holy Prophet ص هللا عي ع said: 'when a gathering of people sit for

remembrance of Allah, the Angels encircle it from all sides and the blessing of Allah covers

them. And Allah Almighty relates this in the company of the Angels.'

Explanation: This Hadith Mubarak shows the importance and nobility of Zikr-e-Allah. When

a group of people sit together to remember Allah, a special group of Angels surround their

gathering and give them glad tidings of salvation. The blessing of Allah covers them from all

sides and their hearts get filled with love of Allah. It affords them deep spiritual peace and

solitude. The most important thing is that Allah Almighty remembers them in the company of

His chosen Angels.Angels are an epitome of submission and worship. They are immune from

any propensity towards error and sin. On the other hand, human composition is a mixture of

good and evil. He is all the time exposed to various temptations and allurements that hinder

his march to the goal of life. Despite all this, giving oneself to Zikr-e-Allah is his sign of love

for his creator. In fact, this is the state and intensity of love which Allah Almighty talks about

in front of Angels. „Lo see! These are My created being of that you complained about, how

they are immersed in My love and remembrance. They have parted with their share of worldly

attractions only for My sake. Instead they are inhibiting the world of heart with My Zikr.'

Translation: Hazrat Abu Hurariah (radiyallahu anhu narrated that the Holy Prophet ص هللا

was on his way to Makkah, when he passed by a mountain called 'Jamdan', so, he عي ع

said,"pay visit to this Jamdan and the singles have preceded." The companions asked, 'O

Holy Prophet ص هللا عي ع what does single means?' The Holy Prophet ص هللا عي ع

said, "those men and women who remember Allah very much."

Explanation: On his way to Madina Sharif, the Holy Prophet ص هللا عي ع passed by a

mountain called 'Jamdan'. He said, 'visit this mountain and that singles went ahead than

others.' When the companions asked who these singles were. The Holy Prophet ص هللا عي ع

said, those men and women who remember Allah very much. These are the people who are

singled out because of their remembrance of Allah. They do Zikr Allah to the extent that

people call them vain and pretentious although their hearts are so much absorbed in the

remembrance of Allah that they do not pay any heed to what people might call them.

But, it should be remembered that remembering Allah much is possible only by Zikr-e-Qalbi.

With tongue we have to talk and deal with many other things in our daily life. Hence, it is not

possible to do Zikr all the time. One can do Zikr-e-Qalbi while working with hands or talking

to other people; that's why pious people (saints) say that while one is busy in work, heart

should be busy in the remembrance of Allah.

Allah Almighty says in the Holy Quran:

(73: اس) س عبي ال ري رغب سح ال ثيع ع روش هللا

"Men whom neither trade nor sale (business) diverts from the remembrance of Allah."

Hazrat Bah-ud-Din Naqshband Bukhari (may Allah bless his soul) said, ' I was surprised the

most at two places. First, I saw a man in Harm Sharif Makkah, who was holding the Black

Curtain of Kaaba and praying to Allah while his heart was forgetful of Him.secondly, I

happened to see a young man doing business of forty thousand Dihrams, but in his heart did

not lose sight of remembrance of Allah even for a moment.'

( زفك عي) Translation: Hazrat Abu Musa (radiyallahu anhu) narrated that the Holy Prophet ص هللا عي

said, “the one who remembers Allah, and the one who does not are like the living and the ع

dead."

Explanation: In this Hadith Mubarak, the Holy Prophet ص هللا عي ع ascribed those people

who do Zikr Allah as living and those who are forgetful as dead. The scholars of Islam say

that remembrance of Allah enlivens the heart while forgetfulness deadens it. In fact, the real

life lies in perpetual and continuous remembrance of Allah. Allah Almighty out of His Ever-

flowing Grace and Bounty bestows eternal life to those hearts that get alive with His Zikr.

They remain alive even after death.

Allah Almighty says about the Shaheed (martyrs) that they are living and get their share of

subsistence from their Lord. Similarly, these Zakireen (those who do Zikr) embrace an eternal

life after their physical departure from this world. On the other hand, the forgetful of Allah are

dead both in this world and the Hereafter. Being alive, their life becomes useless.

"It's not the life at all that I have; livings are those who have nearness with the Friend."

In other words, nearness to Allah is in fact the real life, and this is not possible without Zikr-e-

Allah. This simile of living and dead shows that the living is outwardly decked with Noor-

Hayat (light of life) in which he is an independent and free individual who makes his own

career. At the same time, Allah gives him Noor-e-Batani (Inner Light) which enlightens his

inner being with knowledge, and he treads the Path of Truth in this light. The dead has no sign

Page 7: Zikar elahi

of life; hence option of making choices has no meaning for him. Those who forget Allah, their

outward gets suspended and inner dark, therefore throughout their life, they grapple in

darkness. Maulana Rumi aptly said,

"This life is to worship and remember Allah, for without remembrance of Allah life is

but shame."

Translation: Hazrat Abu Hurariah (radiyallahu anhu) narrated that the Holy Prophet ص هللا

ععي said, ' Allah Almighty says that I deal with human being as he thinks about Me.

When he remembers Me, I also remember him. If he remembers Me alone, I also remember

him alone; if he remembers Me in a company, I remember in a company better than that

(company).

Explanation: Three subjects are dealt in this Hadith Mubarak. Firstly, Allah Almighty deals

with man what he thinks and supposes. If a human being repents sincerely of his sins and

wrongdoing and places a good hope in Allah's Mercy and Forgiveness, Allah Almighty

accepts his repentance and forgives his sins. Similarly, when he prays to Allah with full

conviction and belief that it is Allah Almighty Who listens to His creations and accepts their

prayers, Allah Almighty will fulfil all his supplications. In short, Iman (faith) lies in between

hope and fear. Those who find this state in their life, they understand the secret of life. They

neither become too passive nor too optimist about their wishes and actions.

Secondly, whenever a human being calls his creator, he finds Him quite near. The blessings of

Allah come to rescue him from every difficulty. His love become purely the love of Allah;

and his worship becomes the worship of Creator, the Supreme Being.Making friends with this

man, who is a friend of Allah, is in fact, friendship of Allah Almighty. Allah Almighty puts

his love in the hearts of all His created beings, including the Angels. The love of these people

becomes a key to Paradise. Hazrat Farid-ud-Attar (may Allah bless his soul) says:

" The love of saints is a key to Paradise, and those who bear enmity to them deserve

the curse."

The third subject deals with the relationship of human being with his creator. Allah Almighty

says that whenever a human being remembers Him in his heart (alone), I also remember him

alone. My Murshid-e-Kamil Hazrat Allama Professor Muhammad Maqsood Illahi

Naqshbandi says that anyone who does Zikr-e-Qalbi, Allah Almighty will reward him in such

a way that even the Angels will not know it. This is in fact, what this Hadith Mubarak calls

remembering Allah alone (in heart). Whenever people remember Allah collectively sitting in a

circle, Allah Almighty talks about them in the company of Angels.

Translation: Hazrat Abu Razeen (radiyallahu anhu) narrated that the Holy Prophet ص هللا عي

said, ' shall I not tell you something that gives you well-being of this world and the ع

Hereafter? hold fast to the congregations of men of Zikr-e-Allah', and when you are alone,

move your tongue in Zikr-e-Allah as much as possible; love for the sake of Allah and keep

animosity for the sake of Allah. O, Abu Razeen, do you know, when someone leaves his

home to see his Momin (believing) brother, seventy thousand Angels accompany him who

pray or him and say, 'O Lord, he is meeting for your sake, so give him your nearness.' If you

can do it hold fast to it.'

Explanation: The Holy Prophet ص هللا عي ع mentions many acts of good deed in this

Hadith Mubarak. Firstly, Muslims are exhorted to attend congregations of Zikr-e-Allah as

many times as possible. Obviously, these gatherings reinvigorate and refresh our relationship

with our Creator. These congregations are also a sure source of blessing of Allah. According

to another Tradition there are some special Angels who always search for such gatherings

where people sit together and remember Allah. Whenever they find such people, they cover

them with their Noorani wings and Blessing of Allah descends upon that circle of people. To

remember Allah alone is praiseworthy but attending such gatherings wins pleasure of Allah to

a greater degree.

Secondly, the believers are advised to love and hate only for the sake of Allah. This is one of

the important part of Iman (faith). The companions of the Holy Prophet ص هللا عي ع

were endowed with this quality and degree of Iman. Allah Almighty sent His Revelation to

Hazrat Musa (Moses) ي اعالع "Have you ever done anything for Me?" Allah Almighty

questioned Hazrat Musa عي اعال .The prophet of Allah replied, "Illahi, I have offered prayers

for You, observed Fast and given alms and paid Zakat." Allah Almighty said, “prayer is a

proof for you, Fast is a shield, alms is a shade for you, but what have you done for

Me?"Hazrat Musa عي اعال asked Allah Almighty, "O Lord! Then tell me what is that deed

which is for You alone?" Allah Almighty replied, "have you done friendship and animosity

with someone for My sake?"

Thirdly, according to this Hadith Mubarak the Angels of Allah pray for the person

who meets his Momin brother for the sake of Allah. The number of Angels counted here is

seventy thousand. If this reward is only for meeting a believing brother than what would be

the reward of meeting Aulia Allah and men of knowledge that one can hardly imagine.

Translation: Hazrat Abu Hurariah (radiyallahu anhu narrated that the Holy Prophet ص هللا

said, “there are special Angels of Allah who move about in the ways in search of عي ع

men of Zikr-e-Allah. Whenever, they see a group of people sitting and remembering Allah,

they call one another and cover the gathering up with their wings up to the heaven of this

earth." The Holy Prophet ص هللا عي ع said, “Allah Almighty asks the Angels though He

knows the best about them.' What do My these men say?' The Angels reply that these men

are praising and extolling You. The Holy Prophet عص هللا عي said Allah Almighty asks

them, "have they seen Me?" The Angels say by God, they have not seen You. Then Allah

Almighty says, “what it be like if they see Me?" The Angels say that they will praise You

even more. Allah Almighty asks them, "what do they ask for?" The Angels reply that they

ask for Paradise. Allah Almighty asks them if these men have seen Paradise. The Angels

reply that they haven't seen Paradise. Then Allah Almighty says, “what will they do if they

see Paradise?" The Angels reply that they will covet and crave for it even more. Then Allah

Almighty asks, “what do they seek refuge against?" The Angels reply that they seek refuge

against Hell. Allah Almighty then says, "Have they seen Hell?" The Angels reply in

negative. Allah Almighty says, “what if they see Hell"The Angels say that they would fear it

more and seek refuge against it. Then Allah Almighty says, “O Angels! Bear witness, I have

forgiven them all." The Holy Prophet ص هللا عي ع says, an Angel says, " O Allah! There is a

person in them who has come for his own personal reason." Allah Almighty says that the one

who accompanies them can never be unfortunate."

Explanation: This Hadith Mubarak underlines the importance of Zikr congregations where

people sit together and remember Allah. This act of theirs pleases Allah Almighty to the

extent that He Himself talks about them with Angels. These Angels tell Allah Almighty that

these people have gathered for the sake of Allah alone. They ask for Paradise and seek refuge

against Hell. Allah Almighty bears witness the Angels that He has forgiven them and granted

their wishes. Although Allah knows well about their desires and prayers, yet He asks from

Angels so that they can stand witness that Allah Almighty has forgiven all their misdeeds and

granted salvation. Secondly the people who accompany such blessed souls never remain

deprived of Allah's everflowing Bounty even though they have their own worldly ends. One

can hardly imagine the reward for those who accompany these people solely for the sake of

Allah.

Hazrat Farid-ud-Din Attar (may Allah bless his soul) says:

"if you have sapience and wisdom, be a Dervish (saint) and sit with Dervishes."

"never sit with but Dervish, and do not backbite them as long as it is possible."

Translation: Hazrat Asma bint-e-Yazid (radiyallahu anha) narrated that she heard the Holy

Prophet عص هللا عي saying that, "shall I not tell you your best people?" The companions

asked the Holy Prophet ص هللا عي ع to tell them. He said, "Your best people are those whose

sight makes you remember Allah."

Explanation: According to another Tradition, these men of Zikr Allah are in fact a key to

remembrance of Allah because these are the people whose very sight enhances one's urge for

Zikr-e-Allah. Zikr is such a great wealth that when these people do Zikr, Allah Almighty talks

about them in the company of Angels. But this wealth can not be secured without the

company of men of Allah. Maulana Rumi says:

" A moment in the company of men of Allah is better than hundred of acts of exercise

and worship."

A man came in the company of Hazrat Junaid Baghdadi (may Allah bless his soul). Hazrat

Junaid (may Allah bless his soul) asked him, "What do you do?" He answered, "I live with

Almighty Allah because He says, ' I am with him who remembers Me.' Hazrat Junaid (may

Allah Almighty bless his soul) said, "O man of Allah! Be in the company of men of Allah

because whatever you do, you will be rewarded according to your sincerity, but if you

accompany these men of Allah, you will be rewarded according to their level of sincerity.

Maulana Rumi says:

' Whosoever wants to sit in the company of Allah, he should sit with Aulia Ikram.'

In short, lasting and abiding Zikr-e-Allah is not possible without the company of Aulia Allah.

Allah Almighty says in the Holy Quran: ( 3اجيبء . ) فب عا ازوش ا وز ال رع

"Verily, ask the people of Zikr, if you do not know." (21:7)

In other words, if you do not know how to remember and please Allah, go and sit in the

company of these men of Zikr.

turned hypocrite. Hazrat Abu Bakr (radiyallahu anhu) said, “praise be to Allah, what are you

saying?" I said when we sit in the company of the Holy Prophet عص هللا عي , he advises us

about Paradise and Hell till we see them with our own eyes. When we come to our wives and

children and get busy in work in our fields; we forget a lot many things. Hazrat Abu Bakr

(radiyallahu anhu) said, "By God, it happens to me also." Then Abu Bakr (radiyallahu anhu)

and I reached in the company of the Holy Prophet ص هللا عي ع . I said, O Rasool Allah ص هللا

when we sit in your company, you advise us about Paradise and Hell till we see ,عي ع

them with our own eyes. And when we go to our wives and children and get busy in our

fields, we forget many of them." The Holy Prophet ص هللا عي ع said, "I swear by Allah in

Whose Hands is my life, the state of Zikr and reflection that you experience in my company

if persisted forever, Angels would shake hands with you in your beds and in the ways. But O

Hanzla, this state lasts for a moment or half (he repeated these words thrice)."

Explanation: Hypocrisy is something that conceals inner corruption by agreeable outer

covering. When the companions of the Holy Prophet ص هللا عي ع used to sit in the company

of the Rasool Allah ص هللا عي ع they would forget about the world and its trail of worries

and troubles. But, when they would go to their wives, children and daily business, that state of

heart would change, that's why these companions called themselves hypocrites. The Holy

Prophet ص هللا عي ع highlights the merit of his company that if it persisted, Angels would

have shaken hands with them in their beds and ways.

Heart is called House of Allah in human body. It is a place of Marafat of Allah (true

understanding of Allah). But it ever changes and never stays at one state. Sometimes, it

inclines towards virtue and at other becomes a hub of satanic whispering and intrusion.

Someone said:

' Qalb (heart) has been name as Qalb because it changes at every moment.'

This heart gets stabilized when it gets busy in the remembrance of Allah. This Zikr-e-Allah

causes Noor-e-Illhi to descend in to the heart. The religious saints advise Zikr-e-Qalbi because

it enlightens the heart with Noor-e-Ellahi and it becomes truly a home of Allah. Hakim Senai

says:

'The heart is a place of vision of Allah. Why do you call house of Satan as heart?"

The heart that reflects Divine reflections becomes a friend of Allah. But, this is not possible

without the company of a Sheikh. Hence, it is necessary to find a Sheikh-e-Kamil first and

then hold fast to the love of Aulia Ikram.

reward if you kill your enemy in Jihad or they kill you.?" The companions said, "do tell us."

The Holy Prophet ص هللا عي ع said," It is Zikr-e-Allah."

Explanation: Zikr-e-Allah has been described as the best deed in this Hadith Mubarak

because the object of all the acts of worship is remembrance of Allah. Someone asked Hazrat

Salman Farsi (radiyallahu anhu) as to what is the greatest act of worship. He replied, "Have

you not read in the Holy Quran, Allah Almighty says, اوجش زوش هللا. To remember Allah is in

fact gist of all kinds of worship. I have heard my Sheikh-e-Kamil Hazrat Allama Professor

Muhammad Maqsood Illahi Naqshbandi saying that the importance of Zikr-e-Allah is evident

from the following Hadith Mubarak, "there is always a tool or device to clean everything (as

rusted iron is put in fire, water cleans the cloth etc.) the purity of heart is achieved by Zikr-e-

Allah."The purification of heart also depends on the soundness of heart and its degeneration

starts due to corruption in the heart. The health and purity of heart is only possible with Zikr-

e-Allah. The religious saints consider Zikr-e-Qalbi (Zikr by heart) as Zikr mentioned in above

Tradition. The essence of this Zikr lies in Muraqaba (mental concentration) and remembrance

of Allah. The correctness of action depends on the intention and later takes its recourse from

the heart. The purity of heart is done by Zikr-e-Allah. According to a Tradition, one moment

of thought is described better than seventy years of worship. Sheikh Khaqani says:

"This fact dawned on Khakhani after twenty years that to busy oneself one

moment in Zikr-e-Allah is better the Dominion of Suleman (Solomon)."

Since the purpose of all acts of worship is to remember Allah, that's why this has been made

compulsory without any limitation of time and space.

( سا اؽذ رش ز) Translation: Hazrat Abdullah bin Yasser (radiyallahu anhu) narrated that once an Arabi came

to the Holy Prophet عص هللا عي and asked, "Who are the best people?"The Holy Prophet ص

said, "Glad-tidings are for the person who lives a long life and performs good هللا عي ع

deeds." The Arabi then asked, "What are the good deeds?" The Holy Prophet ص هللا عي ع

said, "you keep yourself away from the world and your tongue filled with Zikr-e-Allah."

Explanation: On questioning by an Arabi, the Holy Prophet ص هللا عي ع

described the best person as to who lives long and does good deeds. Although the Holy

Prophet ص هللا عي ع sought refuge of Allah from old age, but it becomes desirable and a

source of pleasure of Allah if passed in obeying and submitting to Allah Almighty. In fact,

Allah Almighty loves those who remember him constantly for a long time. In other words,

Zikr-e-Allah makes us beloved of Allah.

According to religious scholars س غت اغب means to remember much because if someone

loves, he remembers his beloved very much. According to another interpretation, when

beloved of Allah remembers Him their tongues experience strange savour. They not only

relish the same sweetness in their heart but the listener also finds the same smell. We have

seen in the religious circles of our Mushaikhs that when they advise Zikr to someone, their

tongue produces the same sweetness when they say Allah! The listener also relishes its

sweetness. Maulana Rumi says:

"Allah! Allah! What a sweet name is this! That my life turns like milk and sugar."

"Your Holy name itself is so sweet and your understanding is better than elixir of life."

Hazrat Abu Darda (radiyallahu anhu) said that those people whose tongue is filled with Zikr-

e-Allah will enter Paradise while laughing.

Translation: Hazrat Anas (radiyallahu anhu) narrated that the Holy Prophet ص هللا عي ع

said, "Graze well when you pass by the gardens of Paradise." The companions asked as to

what these gardens of Paradise were. The Holy Prophet عص هللا عي said, "Circles of Zikr-

e-Allah."

Explanation: The Holy Prophet ص هللا عي ع exhorts the Muslims to participates in and hold

fast to the gatherings where Zikr-e-Allah is done. He refers to them as gardens of Paradise.

The word graze is taken from eating and it gives the sense of voraciousness, means make

maximum use of these circles of remembrance of Allah. By grazing well means they should

gather all possible blessings of Allah. If an animal happens to enter a pasture, it grazes

voraciously no matter the shepherd flogs it hard. Similarly whenever a Momin (Believer)

comes across such a circles of Zikr, he profits himself to the full no matter what troubles come

in his way. When a Muslim starts treading the Way of Allah, problems start obstructing his

way. He faces the opposition and taunting behaviour of the people. In this Hadith Mubarak the

Holy Prophet ص هللا عي ع urges the Muslims to hold fast to these gatherings as if they won't

get the second chance. These gatherings are a real source of salvation that's why they are

called 'gardens of Paradise.'

Paradise is an eternal abode of peace where there will be no trouble whatsoever. Similarly,

these gatherings afford mental and spiritual peace, and keep us safe from the miseries and

troubles of this world. Above all with the grace of Allah, one is saved from the mischief of

Satan. In another Hadith Sharif the Holy prophet عص هللا عي said, 'if there is an enemy after

someone and there is a castle of iron in front, will he have any danger from his enemy?' The

companions replied, "what danger he can have" The Holy Prophet ص هللا عي ع

said, someone who does Zikr Allah is saved from the mischief of Satan, in the same way as

this man is saved from his enemy."In other words, these circles of Zikr Allah are strong castles

that provide us protection and security against all types of satanic mischief and evil self.

In another Hadith Zikr-e-Allah has been described as "cure of hearts". Like bodies, hearts also

become sick. These diseases appear in the form of prejudices, envy, pride and self-praise.

These and other ailments inhibit flowering of all good deeds. Their cure lies in Zikr Allah

only.

Translation: Hazrat Abu Hurariah (radiyallahu anhu) narrated that the Holy Prophet ص هللا

ععي said, "If someone sits in a company where Allah is not remembered, there is despair

unto him from Allah; and if someone sleeps at a place where Allah is not remembered, there

is despair unto him from Allah."

Explanation: This Hadith Mubarak gives us atonement for a company where Allah is not

remembered. Daily, we attend many such gatherings where there is nothing except play and

amusement. Whenever, some friend sit together and chatter and gossip, they regard it as a

wonderful company where they enjoyed themselves, though it is nothing but wastage of time

and obliviousness. In this way, we spend our days and nights in futile discussions, and worst

of all we never realize the waste of precious moments of time that could have been used in

remembrance of Allah, given the short span of man's life in this world. How much harm we

incur while sitting in these gatherings will be shown in the Hereafter where we will be

desperate for each and every good deed. This man will wistfully say to his Lord, 'send me

back to the world again, so that I could please you.' But that does not happen. The only way

to please Allah is Zikr-e-Allah. If we perform our daily chores keeping in view the pleasure of

Allah according to the dictates of Shariah, they remain no more worldly pursuits; then what

would be the state of those gatherings, which are specially arranged for Zikr-e-Allah. These

congregations not only save us from despair and loss in this world but are also source of

salvation in the Hereafter. Blessed are those who come from far and wide to participate in

these gatherings. Their sole purpose is to win the pleasure of Allah Almighty and the

company of Allah's chosen beings. In an Hadith the Holy Prophetص هللا عي ع said that even

if someone comes in these congregations with purpose other than participating in them, Allah

Almighty forgives his sins.

said, "Do not talk much without Zikr-e-Allah because talking much without Zikr-e-Allah

hardens the heart. And far from Allah among people is the one who has a hard heart."

Explanation: All the religious scholars and Sufia Ikram are agreed on the importance of

silence. They affirm silence as an antidote that cures all kinds of troubles. There is a Tradition

that the one who kept quite found salvation. But, if it is all the more necessary to talk than say

nothing except Zikr-e-Allah. This means that our talk should be polite and courteous

according to the Sunnah of our beloved Holy Prophet ص هللا عي ع. If any conversation does

not hurt any other brother, this will become Zikr. Immoral and useless talks not only incur sin

and displeasure of Allah but also causes the heart to become hard. This hardness of the heart

Page 15: Zikar elahi

is a sign of one's being away from Blessing of Allah. The hardness of non-believers has been

described in the Holy Quran:

( 31: اجمش. ) ص لغذ ل ثى ثعذ راه ف وب ؾغبسح ا اؽذ لغح

"Then after that, your hearts were hardened and became as stones or even worse in

hardness." (2:74)

According to savants of Tasawaf, there are four types of hearts (Qaloobs):

1-Qalb Qasi: These are the hearts of non-believers and idolaters that have become hard

because of rejecting Truth.

2-Qalb Nas: This is the heart of sinful Muslim who has forgotten the right path. When he

repents, he gets satisfaction.

3-Qalb Mushtaq: This is the heart of submissive and obedient Muslim who has found rest in

remembrance of Allah. This has been described in the Holy Quran:

"Those who believed, and whose hearts rest in the remembrance of Allah; Verily in the

remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest." (28:13)

4-Qalb Wajadni: These are the hearts of prophets and beloved of Allah who have found rest

with the understanding of attributes of Allah and His Being. They come in direct contact with

the characteristic attributes of Eternal Being.Increased Zikr-e-Allah turns the heart in to

Wajadni that becomes a center of manifestation of Allah Almighty

The Holy Prophet ص هللا عي ع said," The best asset is a tongue which remembers Allah, a

Explanation: The verse that was revealed to condemn accumulation of gold and silver is part

of Sura Tauba. People who amass wealth and do not part with the due of kin and the poor as

described by Allah Almighty, they neither eat themselves nor let others eat out of it. The

wealth and riches of such people will become snakes and scorpions in the Hell. This fortune of

theirs will be hanging round their necks, and it will be declared, ' this is the wealth you

(radiyallahu anhu) passed by a circle of Zikr-e-Allah in Masjid-e-Nabvi (Prophet's Mosque).

He asked the people, "Why are you sitting here?" They replied that they were sitting there to

remember Allah. He said, "By God! Are you sitting for the same purpose?" They said that

they were sitting for the purpose nothing other than that. He said, "I have not sworn out of

any suspicion nor there is anyone who has narrated the Holy Prophet ص هللا عي ع

are not sitting for the purpose other than that."He said, "I did not swear out of any suspicion

but Gabriel عي اغال arrived and informed me that Allah Almighty is taking pride among

Angels because of you."

Explanation: The object of swearing was to make sure that they were not sitting for a

purpose other than remembrance of Allah. This was all the more important because Allah

Almighty was taking pride in them. Necessary occupation and daily needs and chores stop

humans from Zikr-e-Allah. Despite all these restrictions, they are still busy in remembering

their Benefactor, that's why Allah Almighty talks about them in the company of Angels. How

lucky were those people who received Glad Tidings of pleasure of Allah in their lives.

Explanation: Those who face troubles in this world and remain patient, there is a double

reward for them. Allah Almighty will raise them high in ranks because of their forbearance.

Allah Almighty has given glad tidings to those people who face hard times in this life. But,

high in ranks. On the basis of this Hadith Mubarak Sufia Ikram say that sultans and rulers

should not be stopped doing Zikr because they can achieve high degrees and ranks in this

way. Instead, many Sufia advise sultans and rulers to do Zikr besides serving people so that,

they can please Allah and win His favour. Hazrat Abu Darda (radiyallahu anhu) said, if you

make Allah share your happiness and bliss, He will remember you in your trouble and

affilictions.Similarly, Hazrat Salman Farsi (radiyallahu anhu) said that the person who

remembers Allah in happiness, when he calls in trouble, the Angels say that this voice seems

familiar and they pray for him. And, if a person forgets Allah in his good days, when he calls

Allah in trouble, the Angels say that this voice is not familiar, and they do not pray for him.

This means whether one is poor or rich, in journey in rest, in good health or in sickness one

should remember Allah all the time. To be a grateful human being entails submission to Allah.

Judgment? The Holy Prophet ص هللا عي ع replied, "Those men and women who remember

and returns victorious). He said, "if he applies his sword on non-believers and infidels till it

breaks and stained with blood, even then the one who remembers Allah is better than him."

Explanation: When the companions of the Holy Prophet ص هللا عي ع asked him about

better people, he replied that these are the one who remember Allah. This means that people

have enduring relationship with Allah through Zikr, and they should be grateful to Him. No

doubt, Ghazi has his own higher rank before Allah, but if an element of vanity creeps in his

intention, all his efforts go waste. Sincerity in action has the same place as the soul has in the

body. The perpetual remembrance of Allah and one's realization of true relationship with

Allah brings an element of sincerity. When the latter becomes a permanent element in actions,

it makes acts of worship even more durable and meaningful, that's why, Zikr has superiority

over all other kinds of worship. But, it does not mean one should neglect all the duties and

obligations. After performing necessary duties and obligations, one should spend as much

time in Zikr as one can do. This is in fact the gist of worship. Maulana Rume says:

"that is a smaller Jihad(against infidels) and this is a greater Jihad(against the Self). To

fight is the job of Rustam and to remember Allah that of Hazrat Ali (radiyallahu anhu).”

said, “Satan remains clinging to the heart of son of Adam (human being), hence ص هللا عي ع

when he remembers Allah, it runs away, and when he is unmindful it whispers."

Explanation: When Allah Almighty put heart in the body of Adam عي اغال after forty years

of latter's creation, Iblees (Satan) asked Allah Almighty, "What have you placed therein?"

Satan exclaimed, "If this is a place of Your Noor, than I would lurk here, so that none could

achieve Your Love." Allah Almighty replied, "My sincere men will not be taken in by you

because they will remember Me all the time." This fact has been described in this Hadith

Mubarak that Satan occupies the heart of human being. When the latter engages in Zikr-e-

Allah, Satan runs away and if he is oblivious, it occupies his heart again. This has been given

in the Holy Quran:

( 17: اضخشف. ) يعؼ ع روش اشؽ ميط ؽيطب ب ف لشي

"And whosoever turns away blindly from the remembrance of Allah the Most Gracious,

We appoint for him Shaitan (Satan) to be a Qarin (companion) to him"

That is, whosoever, disregards remembering Allah, he will be associated with Satan and those

who remember Allah much will be saved from Satanic intrusion. Among all body parts heart

is the only organ where Satanic and Divine forces are at loggerhead all the time. The thoughts

of virtue and good deed indicate the ascendancy of Divine forces over the satanic elements.

Hence, in the later case, one should immediately get busy in Zikr-e-Allah and help strengthen

the Divine forces again. Those who dominate evil and satanic thoughts forever are called Wali

Allah.

Tradition, it is as a green tree among dry trees. "and the one who remembers Allah among the

forgetful is like a lamp in a dark house, and the one who remembers Allah among the

forgetful, Allah Almighty will make him see his house in Paradise in his life. And, the one

who remembers Allah among the forgetful is forgiven like every son of Adam and cattle."

Explanation: This Hadith Mubarak shows the superiority of those people who remember

Allah over those who are heedless. Striving against one's evil self has been named as Jihad-e-

Akbar (greater Jihad) because this is lasting and perpetual till one is living. Zikr is one of the

main weapons in this Jihad to fight out evil and satanic forces. Those have forgotten the real

aim and purpose of life, as outlined in the Holy Quran, they become a ready tool in the hands

of their evil desires and satanic manipulations. On the other hand, Zakreen (those who do

Zikr) are in continuous fight against their evil selves and satanic whisperings. This thing

refreshes their faith and Allah Almighty rewards them in this world by showing them their

abode in Paradise. Hazrat Farid-ud-Din Attar (may Allah bless his soul) says:

"keep your mornings and evenings alive with Zikr-e-Haq, and do not let your

days pass in obliviousness."

Prophet ص هللا عي ع saying, "this world is accursed and everything in it is also accursed

save Zikr-e-Allah and that helps in this, and the one who teaches and the one who learns."

Explanation: There is a Tradition that if this world had value equal to the wing of a mosquito,

Allah Almighty would not have given provision to the non-believers. But, the reality of this

world is even less than the value of mosquito's wing, which shows insignificance of material

world. That's why, this world has been accursed except Zikr-e-Allah and those who teach and

learn knowledge. Since Zikr-e-Allah is the ultimate aim of human life in this world, those

things that inhibit remembrance of Allah in any form have been accursed, as they stop or

detract human will and disposition towards his ultimate goal. Those things, which promote

Zikr and remembrance of Allah and help human being winning the pleasure of Allah, are

exempted from this curse. Those who teach and learn religious knowledge are also out of this

category. This underpins the importance of knowledge in human life. Islam is a Divine light

that helps man finding his true place in the scheme of things, and a sure source of Divine

Marafat. Hazrat Farid-ud-Din Attar says:

to the extent that whenever they do His Zikr, Allah Almighty gives them His nearness.

According to a Tradition, the one who is given three things in this world, he gets the good of

this world and his Deen. First, a tongue that remains busy in Zikr-e-Allah, secondly, a heart

which is grateful, and a body which is patient in afflictions, and fourthly a wife who guards

Zikr-e-Allah. And there is nothing save Zikr-e-Allah which provides deliverance from the

Torment." The companions said, "Not even fighting in the way of Allah?" The Holy Prophet

".said, "Not even if you kill non-believers with your sword till it breaks ص هللا عي ع

Explanation: The first subject dealt in this Hadith Mubarak is purity of heart. When iron is

rusted, it is melted in fire to make it clean. When wood is dried and tarnished, we give it luster

by polishing and painting. Similarly, when heart becomes sick, its purity is possible with Zikr-

e-Allah. Since the name of Allah is holy and clean, the heart where it settles down also

becomes pure and clean. As a result this person finds peace of heart and serenity. Someone

quite aptly said,

"you cannot find peace of heart by the things of this world, or by settling in a house

but peace of heart lies in remembrance of Allah."

The second subject is about deliverance from the Torment of Hell. Although every kind of

worship is a source of salvation, and Allah Almighty gives reward on smallest possible good

deed yet Zikr-e-Allah is the only kind of worship that provides salvation. According to a

Tradition, the Holy Prophet عص هللا عي happened to pass by two graves. He observed with

his Noor of prophethood that the people in the graves were being tormented. He took a green

branch of date-tree and cut it in to two pieces and fixed them on these graves. On being asked

by the companions as to why did he do that, the Holy Prophet ص هللا عي ع said that so long

Page 21: Zikar elahi

2211

as these green branches of date-tree do Zikr, the torment of these dwellers of the graves would

decrease. In other words, Zikr done by these branches resulted in peace of the two inmates of

graves.

Thirdly, to fight in the way of Allah is Jihad-e-Asghar (smaller Jihad) while avoiding

temptations of Satan and Evil Self is a kind of greater Jihad (Jihad-e-Akbar). Unless the

believer fights out his internal enemies, he can not be successful in battlefield. Jihad against

evil propensities is all the more important because Satan and Evil self are those enemies that

can not be spotted with physical eye. Obliviousness on the part of person may cause him loss

of faith and pleasure of Allah Almighty.Secondly, jihad against non-believers is time bound

and done in sertain specific situations while Jihad against Satan and Evil self is perpetual till

end of one's life. The chief weapon in this Jihad is Zikr-e-Allah.

Explanation: Imam Ghazali (may Allah bless his soul) said that one good sitting in the

is not becoming of a Momin to indulge in vain and useless things. The Holy Quran clearly

states:

Explanation: Although helping poor and the needy and being compassionate to the destitute

are great acts of worship yet remembering Allah and His Zikr is even nobler than the former.

A least thought of vanity and self praise can spoil these greater acts, and such things like

charity, teaching beneficial knowledge to others and sacrificing one's life in the way of Allah

can come to nothing with change of intention. On the other hand, the one who does Zikr-e-

Allah, Allah Almighty gives him purity of heart and sincerity in actions that raise his actions

to the level of acceptance before Almighty Allah. A deed done with sincerity, no matter small,

could win the pleasure of Allah and a deed, no matter how big, figures no where before Allah

unless done with right intention of pleasure of Allah. Blessed are those whom Allah not only

bestows them worldly riches but also gives them His Zikr. At the end, they meet the needs of

Fuqura and take care the rights of people. They sit in the congregations of Zikr-e-Allah and

gather the blessings of both the worlds.

disposal to remember Allah. But, he never realizes that the span of life is decreasing like a

melting block of an ice; and the health he is so careless about, turns in to an old age with a

blink of an eye. Secondly, he looks for free time to remember Allah although he daily

dissipates his energies in useless pursuits. When the destined time approaches all the means

and possibilities at his disposal render futile and his register of deeds gets closed. When this

man reaches Allah, he will repent the most about those moments of his life that went past

without Zikr-e-Allah. Even men of Paradise will feel the loss of those moments that past

without Zikr. Those who remember Allah much will be rewarded higher ranks in Paradise.

Translation: Hazrat Anas (radiyallahu anhu) narrated that the Holy Prophet ص هللا عي ع

said, " those people who get together for Zikr-e-Allah, an Angel calls in heavens, 'you have

been forgiven and your sins have been changed in to virtues."

Explanation: Whenever we happen to sit in Zikr congregation, the intention should be good,

so that, we can win the pleasure of Allah. These simple and august gatherings can be source of

salvation and forgiveness provided we stick ourselves to them solely for the pleasure of Allah.

The same subject has been dealt in the Holy Quran:

. غفسا سؽيبفبئه يجذي هللا عيأر ؽغبد وب هللا

"Truly, those are the people whose sins Allah change them in to good deeds. For

Allah is Al-Forgiving" (25:70)

Sufia Ikram deduced another meaning from the above verse that Allah grants them the ability

to do good by giving them the company of men of Allah (Aulia Ikram). When such persons

start sitting in the company of Sufia, they imbibe their good morals. After a few days

company change them completely and they start reflecting good morals of these Aulia Allah.

Hazrat Imam Ghazali (may Allah Almighty bless his soul) says in his famous book Aiya-ul-

Uloom that if you see some pious man coming in the company of bad people, do not call him

pious because this company will soon make him bad. Similarly, if you see some bad person

coming to the company of pious people, do not call him bad because this company will soon

make him good. Sheikh Saadi Sherazi deals the same subject in this verse:

"The son of Noah (the prophet) sat in the company of bad people عي عص هللا

and remained deprived of blessings of Noah's prophethood. And the

dog that remained with the 'people of the Cave' rose to a higher rank."

podium. People will envy them, though they are neither prophets nor martyrs." One Arabi

asked about their state so that, they could recognize them. The Holy Prophet ص هللا عي ع

said, “these are the people who belong to different tribes and cities and get together in love of

Allah and remain busy in Zikr-e-Allah." Explanation: This Hadith Mubarak gives very important idea that those people who remain

busy in Zikr Allah, Allah Almighty bestows them with such Noor due to that they tread the

right path in this world. This Noor will be visible on their faces in the Hereafter. It is not only

their inner self that is illuminated by this Noor but wherever they sit, that place also becomes

a beaming source of Noor.

Hazrat Abu Hurariah (radiyallahu anhu) said that the Angels see Zikr congregations as bright

in heavens as people see luminous moon on this earth.Their real status will be known to

people on the Day of Judgement when they will be sitting on high platforms studded with

beads. Those people who criticize Khanqai (tavern) system will come to understand that these

men of dust were so dear to Allah. Their identity lies in common symbols, which undermine

all the barriers of cast. If you see people from different tribes and regions coming together and

remembering Allah, take it granted that these are the people whose inner self is illuminated

with Noor-e-Illahi. We have seen in religious congregations of our Musheikhs (saints) that

people belonging to different tribes and regions travel from far and wide and get together to

remember Allah. The sole purpose of these gathering is nothing but to win the pleasure of

Allah, and love of our beloved Holy Prophet ص هللا عي ع. May Allah Almighty give us

company of these blessed people forever. Amin.

said, "whosoever among you is unable to toil at night (worship), spend (in way ص هللا عي ع

of Allah) because of niggardliness and fight in the way of Allah out of cowardice, should

remember Allah much."

Explanation: By toil at night means to worship long hours during the night time; spending

one's wealth in the way of Allah entails almsgiving to the poor and needy for the sake of

pleasure of Allah; and to fight in the way of Allah means doing obligatory Jihad which is

incumbent on every Muslim in certain specific conditions. Some people have wrongly

deduced from this Hadith Sharif that obligatory prayers paying Zakat and Jihad can be an

alternative to Zikr-e-Allah. They in fact altogether denied the need of these obligatory acts of

worship. This is an abject ignorance and lack of comprehension. In fact, this saying of our

beloved Holy Prophet ص هللا عي ع is a remedy for those people who are unable to perform

non-obligatory acts of worship as charity and almsgiving and fear fighting in the way of

Allah.

All the diseases take root when Satan gets stuck to the heart. It whispers in the heart about

poverty and fear of death. If heart is busy in Zikr Allah, Satan will have no control over it and

Divine thoughts will be ingrained in the heart. Allah Almighty says in the Holy Quran:

(9: بفم. )زي أ ا ال يى ااى ال االدو ع روش هللا يفع ر ه فبؤ ئه اخغشيب ايب ا

That these worldly riches and children should not stop anybody remembering Allah. Instead

Explanation: There is a Tradition narrated by Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas (radiyallahu anhu)

that remember Allah so much that these hypocrites should start calling you imposter. This

shows, we should do Zikr to the extent that people call us mad. Whenever a Salik (the Truth

seeker) says Allah! Allah! in a loud voice, such people (hypocrites) call him hypocrite. In fact,

this very act of theirs is a sign of hypocrisy.

Sufia have written that one of the tools of Satan is to put the thought in the heart of people not

to do Zikr in front of people lest they should call them hypocrites. By this Satan tries to stop

them from doing Zikr Allah. Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas (radiyallahu anhu) said that Allah

7-the person who remembers Allah in loneliness and tears come out of his eyes.

Explanation: This Hadith Mubarak tells us about those seven people who will be under

exclusive Shade of Allah on the Day of Judgement, when there will be no shade other than

that of Allah. Although these seven people belong to different categories, the seventh person

is the one whom Allah Almighty will provide him exclusive shade because he remembered

Allah and his eyes became wet with tears. What to say of the person who has all the qualities

or at least some of them. Those young men who come in the company of men of Allah

(Saleheen) get soon coloured in their morals, and start ascending the higher plains of piety and

morality. It is said that to repent in youth is the practice of prophets. Blessed are these

youngmen who repent in their youth and attach themselves to the company of men of Zikr.

They come from far and wide and meet each other solely in love of Allah. They do Zikr and

Muraqaba individually and collectively. There is a Tradition that Allah Almighty likes two

drops very much, the drop of blood that falls from the body of Mujahid (martyr) and the drop

of tear that falls from someone's eye out of fear of Allah. Martyrs will fly about in the shape

of green birds in Paradise while Zakireen will remain under the Grand Throne of Allah.

Explanation: In this Hadith Mubarak, the notion that lunar and sun eclipses are caused by

some specific incidents, like the death of someone has been falsified. In the past, it was

customary belief that these are result of some extraordinary events or deaths of kings and

nobles. The Holy Prophet ص هللا عي ع said that these are signs of Allah and worldly events

Explanation: The spirit behind every act of worship is to remember Allah whether it is

prayer, Fasting, Hajj or paying Zakat. This Hadith explains the same subject that remembering

Allah much is in fact the centre-piece of man's whole strive in the way of Allah. Zikr Allah is

a supreme act of worship as far as reward is concerned because it is perpetual obligation while

other acts of worships are time or space bound. They are made obligatory in certain special

repent to Him; hidden repentance for hidden sins and overt repentance for overt sins."

Explanation: When Abdullah bin Abbas (radiyallahu anhu) was asked about Taqwa (piety),

he replied, "Have you ever passed through such jungle where there are many thorny bushes?"

The questioner said, "Yes." He asked, "How did you pass through it?" The questioner replied

Explanation: Allah Almighty says in the Holy Quran:

( 47: اؾغشاد. ) ا اوشى عذ هللا ارمى

"Verily, the most honourable of you with Allah is that (believer) who

has Taqwa (piety)." (13:49)

In this Hadith Mubarak glad tiding of honour is given to those people who hold Zikr

congregations in the mosques. As Allah Almighty says in the Holy Quran that the most

honourable in the sight of Allah are those who have Taqwa (piety). Taqwa is a state in which

a believer obeys all the commandments of Allah and refrains himself away from prohibited

things. Obviously, this state can not be achieved without remembering Allah. Fear of Allah

and piety can not take root in the heart unless it is inhibited by Zikr-e-Allah. When it does, the

state of Taqwa becomes a logical end. Those who have Taqwa and fear of Allah celebrate the

name of Allah not only in their hearts but in the houses of Allah also. Hazrat Farid-ud- Din

Explanation: The blessings of Zikr Allah do not remain confined to the inhabitants but the

place where people sit and remember Allah also becomes blissful. The value of any place

depends on its dweller, that’s why people look that place with an eye of respect and regard

where Aulia Allah live. According to a Tradition, a man in Bani Israel killed hundred people

and repented to Allah. He intended to go a place where men of Allah lived so that he could

repent there. In the way, death overtook him. Allah Almighty accepted his repentance and

forgave his sins. When a mere intention of going towards these people can cause forgiveness,

then how it comes that those who sit in the company of these Aulia Allah will not be forgiven.

And what would be the state of these exclusive men of Allah for whose sake Allah accepts

repentance of the sinners and shower His Blessings. Maulana Rumi says:

“A little while company of Aulia Allah is better than hundred years sincere worship."

Since vanity and pride can spoil the whole toil (worship), but the company of Aulia Allah is

the attainment of pleasure of Allah. In this Hadith Mubarak the Holy Prophet ص هللا عي ع

When people sit together and remember Allah, the blessing of Allah descends. It is declared in

the heavens that bear witness Allah Almighty has forgiven these people and their misdeeds

elixir which purifies heart of all its maladies. With this purification, the spiritual self of man

gets strengthened and achieves nearness to Allah Almighty. When this happens, the evil self

changes into contended self where the evil disposition of the self gets overpowered by

goodness. This contended self further advances towards higher stages of 'Nafs Radhia' and

'Mardhia' (pleased and ever pleasing) happy with his Lord. Allah Almighty gives glad tidings

of Paradise to this contended spiritual self:

“O (you) the one in (complete) rest and satisfaction! Come back to your Lord,

pleased and well pleasing. Enter you among My (honourable) slaves and enter

you My Paradise." (Al-Quran: 89:27-30)

Since the purification of inner self is more important than the purification of wealth, that's

why Zikr Allah has been called better than giving charity.
