Proposed Design : Contrasting with its 19th century industrial surroundings, the new Manayunk's Art Center emerges with dynamic forms and colors. The spaces and their functions are color coded orange + red for public and blue + green for private. The performing areas are located on the right wing, commercial spaces at ground floor, parking at 1st, 2nd & 3rd FL, and residential with green roof areas atop. The building faces a large public amphitheater followed by the Schuylkill River.

Program : A Media Center that incorporates New-Media technologies in its tectonics. [ coffee shop ][ library ][ studio spaces ][ class rooms ] [ administrative offices ] [ lounges ] [ large gallery ]

Process : Evolving from site analysis of environmental issues and sight lines, floating volumes emerges to provide new visual and sensorial experiences as a metaphorical play of the dynamic rive below. Multi-layered transparency bordering the site reflects urban forms, in conjunction with the iconography of the functionally complex circuit board structure. Highly engaging, vibrant spaces vary throughout the site and within the building by contrasting the rigidity of the city grid and reflecting the fluidity of the neighboring river. External and exposed systems generate illusions based on a hierarchy of structural members and programmatic spaces within.

Proposed Design : A open courtyard as a public green amenity. The spaces are arrange hierarchically, coffee shop @1stFl., offices & comp. rooms @ 2nd & 3rd + galleries @ 4th & 5th FL. The Main Gallery hovers above the courtyard for shade below & best views above. Mechanical louvers control natural light inside + closing for maximum darkness for digital projections.

Proposed Plan: The building is divided into 3 sections. The ground FL is for storing heavy construction materials, and the 2nd FL. for more fragile objects. Inside the TriGen the objects become more precious such as furniture and antiques. Atop, a series of skylights directed to the south-west illuminate the Main Hall with natural light.

Thesis Theory : Design Process After the death of the great American city, comes the rediscover of forgotten urban spaces. The rebirth or gentrification of cities does not always value the previous layers of history embedded in the urban fabric. Presently, global trends are continuously pushing cites to grow in population and redeveloping their near surroundings. However, only those that maintain their memories and history will remain authentic and unique. During the past decades, oblivion has led the city cores to their decay. This layer of history is a testimonial to the flaw of human progress, the waste generated by commerce and globalization. If city politicians became appreciators of the mysteries as well as the realities of the world, maybe then they would understand that urban ruins represent a legacy in the contemporary city and that decay is an allegory of memory. Urban decay is either enticing or abhorrent according to ones aesthetic judgment, nonetheless it contains seductive qualities at the cost of emotional displacement. This disjunctive conjunction is a sense of the uncanny, the notion of the homely and unhomely. This psycho-emotional stage could be manifested aesthetically as well as architecturally. In this thesis, the architectural uncanny seeks to reconstruct our perception of the decay and to reveal the qualities of a place and time.



The Uncanny Experience :The character of an authentic city is created by the continual overlap of manmade physical layers. The urban environment is a collage of new and decayed materials which creates uncanny experiences, essential for understanding our past and present. Filled with archeological value, derelict buildings are legacies of our urban palimpsest. Here the iconic Tri-Gen building is reactivated to offer uncanny spaces which enrich our urban experience and raise our conscious of material waste.

Program : Phase IUsing the idea of the automobile, the living unit displays concepts of prefabrication of components and high performance parts. The idea is to incorporate structure, skin, plumbing, lighting, heating and cooling system, ergonomics and customizations into one optimized living machine.

Section :The typical living Pod is divided into 2 levels, communal spaces above, sleeping below. Openings in the roof allows for natural light and ventilation.

Level_1 :Cooking appliances and furniture are integrated into the architecture. Future living will consist in simplified spaces as the interiors become highly computerized.

Level_2 :Integrated systems allow for the optimization of spaces and resources. E.g. water used in the sink can be reutilized for flushing.



Program : Phase IIUnit aggregation creates a micro and a macro organization. "The frame" with Inter_node morphology connects the living units with its urban context. This element functions both as infrastructure and as service provider, thus becoming the catalyst for residents and the city.

Costomization :Differences in scale, shape, and level of enclosure allows for different programs. Larger units can be converted into commercial / institutional spaces.

Concept for evolution : Inter_NodesIn plants, Inter_nodes evolves from a single cell creating extra ramifications. This model of growth allows for morphologically strong structures.



Site : Shanghai, China& TelAviv, Israel

Adaptation : Similar to the automobile, the unit can be adapted into different climates and topographies. The units agglomerate within the structural framework as needed. The arrangement offers porosity allowing penetration of natural light and air. Similar to a natural ecosystem, this organization offers flexible changes and grow.



Sustainability : The system is designed to tap into natural resources such as geothermal energy and water. The frame purifies and recycles water as well as collects rain to produce a semi-autonomous system.

Threshold

Proposed Design :This continuous structure serves to emphasizes and expands cultural activities. A series of examinations of environmental forces sculpt contours in the site. The form responds sensitively to the preconditioned sight lines and circulation paths, while addressing its programmatic. The parametric structure has two entrances, one threshold nearby the main path welcoming visitors. A second arch on the opposite end frames the entrance to the adjacent serpentine gallery. The excitement and cultural activities takes place at the center area/hub defined by the structure's body (expo/café) and the dais.

Exuberant: Extreme or excessive in degree, size, or extent : joyously unrestrained and enthusiastic : elaborate especially in style : flamboyant.

Voluptuous: Full of delight or pleasure to the senses : conducive to or arising from sensuous or sensual gratification : luxurious

Exteriority

Design Process : Using digital techniques with a nuanced and developed aesthetic sensibility explore and research new forms of interiorities or internal logics of tectonic structures. The objective is to create variation and atmosphere in buildings effectively placing a stress on different part-to-whole relationship, organizations, material qualities and colors and their various rates of transformation.

Exterior:Different rate of changes in geometrical intensity and material transformation on the exterior surfaces indicates the hierarchical location of the interior functions. While the entrance is designed in a much finer scale and smoother surface, the ballroom, on the opposite end, presents larger scale formations and different material qualities.

Interior:Topologically, the continuous surface is generated from specific localities and conditions, iridescent colors highlight the geometry of the surface. The spaces to design are: class rooms, study rooms, a computer center, a library, administrative offices, a multi-purpose room, senior rooms, and outdoor areas for recreation.

Proposed Design : Tioga Community Center, uses local and recycled materials for its construction. Rainwater is collected on site into a reservoir for irrigation and toilet flushing. During summer a series of louvers, overhangs, operable windows, courtyards and deciduous trees offer cooling, while in winter, two green houses and skylights heat the interior. Numerous doorways open onto the outdoor spaces to create a strong connection with the neighborhood.

Proposed Design :Emerging from its urban context, the new IBC integrates both landscape forms and building skin into one continuous element, thus presenting in its tectonics qualities of Bioethics and bio-technologies. Structure, skin and interior circulation elements are fused into one cohesive building system. Programmatically and architecturally the building is divided into 3 parts, administration, research spaces and meeting spaces, all unified by passageways with connections to the outside.

Process :The research initially started with the development of the structure. Using the < Y > form as the primary cell, it was then self-multiplied to create a complex + strong three-dimensional frame. Off of this skeleton, programmatic spaces were developed to morph into infrastructures that connect with the urban fabric.

Project Description : In the next decades water will be one of the most important resources and expensive commodity. The HORTI-hub is created for the research of water purification through the use of specialized vegetation. HORTI-hub, located in lower Manhattan, purifies the water of the Hudson River and collected rain water which later is distributed to the city for drinking and usage. Programmatically, the complex includes a series of public gardens, botanic gardens and cultural center for the residents and visitors. The [ research center ] is dedicated to the study of advances in horticultural technologies, such as genetically manipulated plants for water purification and plants with healing properties. The complex features green houses, publicgardens and ponds for algae oxidation. The building rises from the continuity of the spaces below. The green roofs are continually transformed into green walls for thermal insulation. The triangulation creates high performance structure allowing the towering effect. The split between the [ residential tower ] and the [ office tower ] offers privacy and efficient mobility for the users. The commercial spaces are located where the towers merge. A series of bridges connects the two for easy commute. The design also allows maximum sunlight in the units and open air spaces. HORTI-hub promotes a work-live environment, thus reducing the need for commuting. This mix-use complex provides recreational, commercial and working spaces for its inhabitants in a car free environment.
