2019 -2020 Scholarship Application

Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated was founded on the campus of Howard University on January 16, 1920, as the sister organization to Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated. Five phenomenal women: Arizona Cleaver Stemons, Myrtle Tyler Faithful, Viola Tyler Goings, Fannie Pettie Watts and Pearl Anna Neal, chartered Zeta Phi Beta Sorority to encourage the highest standards of scholarship through scientific, literary, cultural and educational programs; promote service projects on college campuses and in the community; foster sisterhood; and exemplify the ideal of Finer Womanhood. Eta Pi Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., was founded on November 11, 1973, in Montgomery County, Maryland. It was among the first predominantly African-American social and community service organizations to be established in Montgomery County and resulted from the lowering of housing barriers for African Americans after the civil rights movement in the 1960s. As new families moved into the county, the need for a Montgomery County chapter was evident to provide other Zetas the opportunity to remain active and to provide a voice in the county for the new residents. The Eta Pi Zeta chapter has served Montgomery County for over 40 years. The chapter’s programs include an educational scholarship cotillion, health awareness fair, assistance to the needy and community outreach activities. The chapter also supports the black college tour for high school students. Eta Pi Zeta is also associated with the NAACP, National Council of Negro Women, Montgomery County Women’s Commission, the Pan Hellenic community, Rockville Senior Center and Crossway Program for Women and Children and Montgomery County Women’s Center Eta Pi Zeta Chapter Scholarship Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated - Eta Pi Zeta Chapter is pleased to announce that it is now accepting applications for the 2019 – 2020 scholarship awards. Book and regular scholarships will be awarded in amounts up to $1,000 (subject to change). APPLICATION CRITERIA: An applicant must:

● Be a high school senior, ● be accepted at a (2) or (4) year Not for Profit College or University, ● have a minimum cumulative unweighted GPA of 2.5, and ● Live or attend school in Montgomery County, MD.

APPLICATION PROCEDURES:

To be considered for the scholarship, an applicant must submit: ● Scholarship application.● Provide proof of community Service hours.● An essay (instructions are provided as part of this application).● Two letters of recommendation (one must be from a teacher and sent in a sealed envelope

signed by a school official).● An official copy of the applicant’s high school transcript indicating the cumulative

unweighted GPA.

Scholarship Award Contingent Upon: Acceptance letter from the recipient’s College or University Required to participate in an interview by the Scholarship Committee.
