Instructor Spotlight

Introducing JoRene Woodworth, Fitness Instructor

Memory loss that disrupts daily life may be a symptom of Alzheimer’s or another dementia. The number of people living with dementia worldwide is currently estimated at 35.6 million, and this number will double by 2030 and more than triple by 2050. Alzheimer’s is a brain disease that causes a slow decline in memory, thinking and reasoning skills.

But how do you know if you are experiencing typical age-related memory changes or signs of Alzheimer’s or other dementias? The table below describes some typical experiences.

If you want to learn more, we will be offering free memory screenings at the Bennett Valley Senior Center Tuesday, November 18 from 9am-12pm, FREE for Senior Center Members, #75870. Please pre-register by calling 545-8608. Lucy Andrews, RN, from At Your Service Homecare will be providing screenings

The Person Senior Wing Needlecraft Group, the “Knit Pickers,” has been busy knitting and crochet-ing to create handmade items for the “Mother and Child Program” at the Living Room – a daytime shelter for homeless and at-risk women and chil-dren during the day when shelters are closed. The busy group has created a plethora of little hats, booties, and small dolls to donate. Additionally, five full size Afghans are ready to be delivered to local Veterans just in time for the cold season!

You are invited to join this cheerful group –all levels of experience are welcome. The group also appreci-ates donations of yarn. Join the Knit Pickers, at the Person Senior Wing on Mondays from 10-noon. There is a $2 drop-in fee.

Technology is playing a large role in the lives of people 50+. Google recently conducted a study of more than 6,000 boomers and seniors that examined how these groups are using the Internet. The study found that 78 percent of boomers and 52 percent of seniors are online.

Sometimes getting started with technology and keeping current can be a challenge. We invite people of all computer levels to participate in the Computer and Technology Lab at the Per-son Senior Wing; Tuesdays and Thursdays 9-11am, $2 drop-in fee. These open lab hours are staffed by a group of dedicated volunteers, Cheryl, Fred and Car-rie. They are prepared to answer questions about a variety of topics and help you with your projects.

If you are just getting started in computing, the Person Senior Wing will be holding three com-puter workshops for beginners.
