Instructor Spotlight

Introducing Gloria Peck, Boomer Blast and Zumba Basics Instructor

Summer is here, and it’s time for you to get outside and enjoy walks in the park and scrumptious barbecues. As you ready the grill, keep these summer barbecue tips in mind.

When you are cooking meat over high heat, fat drips onto the heating element, forming

potentially cancer-causing chemicals that are deposited on the meat by rising smoke. To reduce the risks from grill-ing meats, pick low-fat cuts and trim the visible fat. Wrap meat in foil to protect it and don’t place the meat directly over the heat source (push the coals to the sides of the grill once they are hot). Place aluminum foil or metal pan between the meat and the coals to catch the dripping fat. And scrap off charred parts from the cooked meat. Remember to cook ground beef to an internal tempera-

ture of 160⁰F according to a meat thermometer. Marinat-ing chicken may also provide fewer cancer-causing hetero-cyclic amines by 99% when grilled for 30 minutes or more. If you want to consume the marinade the meat sat in, be sure to boil it for at least one full minute before serving it as sauce.

If tasty BBQs are on your menu – be sure to join us at the Annual Senior Picnic in Howarth Park on July 9th. Sign up today. We’ll do all the chef work!

Council on Aging provides 13 congregate meal dining sites in So-noma County where 350 meals are served daily. All seniors 60 years of age and older are welcome, along with their spouses or caregivers of any age. Council on Aging of Sonoma County, a private non-profit, was established over 40 years ago to serve local seniors. Thirty-eight percent of Council on Ag-

ing’s annual budget is provided by State and Federal funding under the Older Americans Act. The rest of the money is generated through donations from clients and the general public, fundrais-ing events and grants.

Congregate meal service is available at the Bennett Valley Senior Center. Lunch is served daily at noon. Ashley Erlendson, Bennett Valley’s Dining Site Manager, and her team of volunteers serve a delicious, freshly prepared meal daily. The meal program is based on a single Heart Healthy menu. Over the course of a month, the meals will range from casseroles to sandwiches and

soup, from fish to turkey and gravy. Special meals are served for Thanksgiv-ing, Christmas and St. Patrick’s Day. Each meal includes a protein, a veg-etable, a starch, milk, juice and fruit or dessert

Why not grab a friend and enjoy a tasty social experience. Menus are available at the front desk of the Bennett Valley Senior Center or online at www.councilonaging.com

Reservations are recommended 24 hours in advance. This meal is FREE to our Senior Center participants.

The City of Santa Rosa is asking the community to reduce water use by 20%. Together we can help extend our water supply through this drought. The Recreation and Parks Department is also doing its part to cut back. For the past two seasons, the department has been practicing deficit irrigation for park greens to optimize water usage and will continue this practice this year. The department has also made repairing irrigation problems a priority to minimize waste. In addi-tion to these efforts, the Department will reduce water use in our recre-ation activities by reducing the hours of the water play feature at Howarth Park (weekends only) and eliminat-ing high volume water-use activities, such as slip and slides at our summer

programs. Thanks for considering making some small changes of your own to help conserve. Below you will find some helpful tips. Remember, every drop counts, and small changes

add-up to big savings. Contact the water-use efficiency team for free water-saving fixtures! [email protected] or (707) 543-3985.
