A high quality insulating oil is required for a transformer to function as per its design. Moisture, Particles and gaseous contamination severely limits transformer ability to do so.
The useful life of the transformer insulation can be as long as fifty years or as short as two years, depending on maintenance philosophy's.
There are three main causes affecting the life of the transformer, namely operating temperature, moisture, insulation and rate of oxidation, which results in the formation of acids and sludge. Each of these factors will affect the life of the transformer insulation on its own, but a combination of these factors can dramatically escalate the deterioration rate
