PAST EVENTS Yalda Celebration: We sure had a wonderful Yalda night with all our friends and

family. This year Yalda was made even more special with a "Boi" ceremony in the

Aiwisruthrem Gah by our Mobeds Poras and Yazdi. It was nice to have our Afargan

blazing with the beautiful fire and everyone praying together.

Our youth would like to thank all who donated toys and food cans and supported their drive. Thanks to Armin & Zubin Daroona who donated fabric to make blankets

for the needy. (Picture to the right was taken at Yalda Celebration)

Zarthusht No-Diso: On December 26th around 50 of us got together for a Jashan to

commemorate Asho Zarathustra's death anniversary. We thank our Mobeds Poras

and Burzin Balsara for their time to make this event possible for our community.

Everyone enjoyed warm delicious food and conversation with good friends.

Maidhyoishem Gahamber: A little over a hundred adults and children met earlier this December to celebrate the Maidhyoi-

shem Gahambar (according to the Shahenshahi calendar). It was sponsored by the Kharases (Yazdi, Charlotte and Rustom) to

honor the memory of their father and grandparents. We would like to thank everybody who attended the Gahambar and honored

our family. We profusely thank Mahnaz Irani for cooking the delicious “papet-ma- gosht”, Arnavaz Vakharia for the “dhansak rice” and Anahita Sidhwa for the “kachumbar”. We were delighted to provide the “dhansak-ni-daar”, pineapple “murambo”,

“rotlis” and the flambéed peaches and ice-cream for dessert. We also thank Hoshang and Arbez Patel for their ever ready help

and support with the innumerable tasks, great and small, which ensured a successful evening. Last but not least, we thank every-

body who helped to heat the food, lift the heavy pots, wash up and put away everything at the end of the evening. It was an in-

credible event for our family and we are grateful for all the help, support and goodwill. Written by Charlotte Kharas

YOUTH LOCK-IN Our first youth Lock-in in our ZANT center during the Thanksgiving break was a huge success. We had over 55 youth with us

from Houston, Austin and of course Dallas ! Our center was alive with their energy and it was wonderful to see all the Zar-

thushti youth bonding. They all made lasting memories to further their friendship bonds with our neighboring youth. Here are

some excerpts from our Dallas youth experiences:

“The youth lock in was fantastic! I am so grateful to and would like to extend a sincere thank you to all the people that made it

possible for those of us who made friends in the July 2011 Youth Congress to see them again. Because, you can always lose

material wealth that you have amassed, but the friendships you all are helping make possible will last forever.” - Armand

Behroozi

“We had a great time and made new friends for life !!!” - Nadia and Niessa Samiya

“I really enjoyed the lock in with the Houston kids. It was great to see all the people we had met in Houston again.” - Zaal

Buhariwala.

“I was thrilled and excited to see all the faces of our Houston friends the minute they came to our ZANT Center . We had a fun

time at the center playing games, listening during the sessions, and dancing late at night. It was a great lock-in and I hope to

meet up with my friends again soon.” - Anaiza Irani

“It was a great experience getting to spend time with the teenagers of the Houston and Austin Organizations. We met new peo-

ple as well as caught up with old friends and we all spent time together playing games and listening to sessions.”- Afshan Irani

“I had a lot of fun, I would definitely want to do that again. Thanks for letting me be a part of the fun!” - Kiana Menguita

“During the lock in I noticed many well done activities that were well planned. There were also some things that were lacking.

I liked the free time and other things like that. I also liked the lessons and their duration was just right as well. They weren’t too

long, but not too short so it kept our attention and we still learnt. One thing I think what we lacked was to create organized games or activities, so people could get to know each other better. I saw that many people only hung out with certain groups

that they were friends with prior to coming to this event. I think we should use more team building games to help people get out

of their comfort zone and meet new people. That is the only area in my opinion that we have an opportunity for improvement.

Other than that I liked the organization of the event and had a great time.” - Daryus Dorabshaw

A REVIEW OF LITERATURE ON THE SIGNIFICANCE OF ATASH

Jashn-e Sadeh is the celebration of the discovery of Atash (or Fire). Below please find the outcome of several

book reviews on the significance of Atash in Zoroastrianism:

“Fire is regarded as an iconic symbol of truth and justice. This symbolism is very powerful, for it not only “shows

forth” asha but also gives light, which is a positive, spenta, good, and by praying before it the worshipper was helped

to fix his thoughts on Mazda himself and his goodness, as well as on truth and justice.”

(Excerpted from, “Zoroastrianism: Its Antiquity and Constant Vigour / Mary Boyce)

“There are multiple reasons why fire should have been identified with asha. It was present at almost all acts of wor-

ship, and was to be found on the hearth of every house, being essential for everyday life. Furthermore, it gave out not

only warmth but light, visibly driving back the darkness, which is linked symbolically with ignorance and wrong. There was thus complex significance in making it the icon of the faith; for Zoroaster ordained that his followers

should pray in its presence, turning towards sun or moon or earthly fire, so that it would help them to fix their

thoughts on justice and truth.”

(Excerpted from “The Teachings of Zoroaster; / Mary Boyce. A Zoroastrian Tapestry: Art, Religion & Culture.)

In Ancient Iran, “ Atash Parast” or “Fire worshipers” referred to the guardians of Atash. This term was only used for

Mobedan since only they had the task of guarding and nursing the “Atash”.

(Excerpted from: A Research on Avesta and Traditions and Beliefs of Zarathushti, 2003, By Maziar Ghavi-del)

Athra, “fire” in the Gathas is mental light, warmth, and energy, three qualities that help one become as creative as

one can. The physical fire, used as the best of altars, represents the mental “athra”.

(Excerpted from: The Zarathushtrian Religion- A Chronological Perspective, Volume 1- The Avestan Period, 2008,

By Ali A. Jafari)

“Azar” is “Atre in Gathas meaning “Atash. Nowhere in Gathas, Ahura Mazda and Atash are the same. In Avesta,

Ahura Mazda is also considered light. Zoroastrians consider fire as a reflection of Ahura Mazda and during prayer

they look at and face the source of light such as sun, moon, or fire. Light is the final destination of Ahura Mazda.

Ahura Mazda is everywhere, the same as sun’s light which always covers part of the planet earth. Therefore, Zoroas-trians pray in the presence of light, the most apparent symbolism of Ahura Mazda which exists everywhere. In addi-

tion, when a Zarthushti states fire is sacred and not to be polluted, one is performing a religious doctrine. In Zoroas-

trianism, worship involves practice of righteousness, purity, and constructive & abundant life. All natural elements (water, earth, air & fire) are sacred and should be protected from pollution. Anything causing air pollution should not

be placed in the fire. Today we are witnessing a new movement in preventing the earth pollution.

(Excerpted from: New View of An Ancient Religion- Zarthusht’s Philosophy, 1984, By Farhang Mehr)

Zoroastrians value not only fire, but also all other natural creations that are an integral and beneficial part of their

lives. Holding respect and value for natural creations-touted today by most scientists and environmentalists – was

first being taught by Ashu-Zarathushtra over three thousand and seven hundred years ago. After the discovery of fire,

humans realized they could utilize its heat and light for keeping warm and seeing about themselves in the dark. Once

they realized they could use the same fire to cook their food and prepare their meals, they started to find more reasons

for holding respect for this natural element. Since in those days matches and lighters were not available, ancient Per-

sians built special places to keep fire burning day and night such that people could use it for their household needs

year-round. And as such came about the existence of fire-temples. Since these temples in general were warm, well

lighted, and inviting locations, as time went by they became the center of cultural and religious events and Zoroastri-ans began to gather there for major functions and group prayers. Fire is the source for heat, light, protection from

wild creatures, and the basis for many industries. It is also a symbol of warmth and passion. Zoroastrians respect the

unique virtues of fire, and pray and thank Ahura Mazda for creating such an element. Zoroastrians are respectful of

fire, but do not worship it.

(Excerpted from: A Few Selections from the Religion and Culture of Zoroastrians, 2003, Jamshid Pishdadi)

The Significance of Sacred Fire in Zoroastrianism are as follows: 1.The Sacred Fire is the physical representation of

“Asha” which is Order, Truth, and Righteousness, 2. The Sacred Fire is the life giving force that permeates and

makes dynamic the wise Lord’s other six creations. 3. The Sacred Fire, to a Zarathushti, is a conscious, living being who has to be nurtured and cared for, as through its luminosity it dispels darkness, and in turn, gives humankind the

opportunity to seek true enlightenment.

(Excerpted from: The Zarathushti Religion- A basic Text Adapted and Collected by Mobed Fariborz Sohrab

Shahzadi, 1998)

Since Asha was the most important part of Zarathushtra’s message, He came naturally to be associated with the out-ward symbol of His religion – Fire. So, very early we find Asha Vahishta representing Fire, the symbol of Zoroas-

trian Religion. The Prophet chose the Fire as His symbol, for it is the purest among God’s creations. It has besides

two special peculiarities, which can also be used to symbolize two important spiritual qualities. In the first place Fire has got the power if immediately transmuting everything it touches into a likeness of itself. And secondly, the flames

of fire always tend upwards, and thus aptly symbolize our yearning for the Higher Life. So this association of Asha,

the Eternal Law, by which all progress upward is guided, and Fire was a very natural step. And in Sasanian times the

name of the Holy Immortal – in the Pahlavi language, Ardibesht – is used for Fire, and He is regarded as the Lord of

Fire.

JASHN-E SADEH

Sadeh, an ancient Iranian festivity is celebrated on 10th day of the Persian month of Bahman. “Sad” in Farsi means 100 and on Sadeh, there are 50 days plus 50 nights left till Norouz. Sadeh is also considered the celebration of dis-

covery of Atash (fire) by Houshang Shah according to legend in Shahnameh. From the early days, all nations across

the world believed in light and fire as a source of happiness and enlightenment. The ancient Iranian tribes soon real-

ized the applications of fire and its significance. This is why Zoroastrians made a large fire for Jashn-e Sadeh. In fact,

fire was one of the necessities during any Zoroastrian celebration.

According to historical and ancient documents, Jashn-e Sadeh is predominantly a cultural Persian celebration rather

than a religious one. However, Zoroastrians were the ones who kept this tradition alive after the Arab conquest of Iran. This was not an easy task since one of the requirements of Jashn-e Sadeh was to make a large bonfire in the

outskirts of towns.

During reign of Agha Mohammad Khan Ghajar, 15 thousand Zoroastrian families existed in Kerman, and due to this high concentration of their population, they were able to celebrate Sadeh every year keeping this tradition alive. A

large bonfire was made outside the city of Kerman with hundreds of people attending. Mobeds recited prayers around

the fire, and people distributed food to all while celebrating the occasion. In Yazd city, Zoroastrians celebrated Sadeh by keeping the fire lit and live inside their own homes. And in Kermanshah, people lit fires at intersections on cer-

tain days, while dancing and singing around the burning flames.

Just as in Avesta, in many current world languages fire is referred to as not just the physical fire, but also the spiritual

light and warmth within any human being and Sadeh is the celebration of this important virtue.
