Offering public, twilight, fall foliage, lunch, dinner, special event & privated charted cruises! The Current Lorena was introduced to Zanesville in 1976 for the bicentennial of the United States. In Pine Bluff, Arkansas, the “Lorena,” then known as “Bryce M,” operated as a push boat from Mobley Construction from 1947-1975. It was renamed “Lorena” when it was renovated in 1975 for the Zanesville celebration. The boat navigated the Arkansas, Mississippi, Ohio and Muskingum Rivers during its two week journey to Zanesville. The Naming of the Lorena The original Lorena Sternwheeler was named after the sweetheart of a popular Civil War song written by Zanesville native Henry De Lafayette Webster. According to legend, Webster was pastor of Zanesville’s Universalist Church in 1848 when he met and fell in love with a local girl named Martha Ella Blocksom. Ella’s foster parents found about the relationship and forced her to end it. She wrote a letter to Webster ending their romance and leaving him heartbroken. Years later, Webster wrote a song about the failed romance. The song was published in 1857. Webster changed the name to “Lorena” to save Ella any embarrassment and to fit the melody that had been written by Webster’s New England friend. The ballad became popular throughout the country and was sung by Confederates and Yankees alike. But the heart throbs on as warmly now As when the summer days were nigh; Oh the sun can never dip as low A down affection’s cloudless sky.
