Subject: Project Numbers
The 13 digit project numbers (Le. 46-0048-01-032-10) will no longer beused by MDOT. They will be replaced by a number referred to as the"External Number" [Le. STP-0048-01 (032)] which has been referred to asthe Federal Project Number in the past. The FMS Project Number(Le. 102196/301) will be shown with this External Number on RoadwayDesign documents as described and illustrated in the attacheddocuments. This new Project Number system shall be implementedimmediately except for plans which have already been printed(Small-Blued). Final Plans produced by consultants which have alreadybeen submitted are also exempt.

2. EXAMPLE PLANS (See Attachments 4-5 for Example Title Sheet)(
Both the External & FMS Construction Project Numbers shall be shown on theTitle Sheet with the External Number listed as the Project Number and the FMSNumber listed in smaller text below or to the right of the External number.
The PE External Number & FMS Number will be placed at the top of the sheetdesignated by PE.
ROW plans shall show the ROW FMS Number to the right of the External ROWNumber designated by ROW.
The External Project Number will be shown on individual plan sheets. TheFMS number will not be shown on individual plan sheets. IndividualPlan sheets should not be affected by the new numbering system becausewe currently show the Federal Project Number (External Number) onthese sheets.

PROJECT NUMBER CODE
Effective Date: August 1,1999Issued Date: August 1, 1999
Supersedes S.O.P.ADM-Q2·08·02·000
DatedMay 15,1968
The project number consists of a six digit segment plus a three digit detail segment. The six digit segmentdesignates the overall termini of the project and may have more than one detail segment. Each detailrepresents preliminary engineering, right of way or construction phases of the overall project and may haveshorter termini than the overall project. There may be, for example, two construction details that comprise theoverall termini.
The user assigns the first digit as follows:1 = Construction Project3 = Maintenance Project5 = All other projects
The detail segment is assigned by the user.1XX = Preliminary Engineering2XX = Right of Way3XX = Construction
Because the six digit project segment is essentially a random number that in no way describes any thingabout the project, such as route or funding, it will be supplemented by an external number.
The external number consists of four segments: an alphabetic prefix that denotes the program or typefunding, a four digit federal route segment, a two digit federal route section segment, and a three digit unitsegment enclosed in parenthesis. The prefix, federal route segment and federal route section segment areseparated by dashes (-). For example an Interstate project on I-55 in Madison County could have an externalnumber of IM-0055-02(117). It is important that the federal route segment is always shown as four digits, thefederal route section segment as two digits, and the unit segment as three digits. The prefix can be variouslengths, but the entire external number cannot exceed twenty characters.
Projects on the 1987 4-Lane Road Program will have a three character suffix to designate the program phase,e.g. , SDP-0056-01 (075)PH3 for a project in Phase 3.
\ Approved by: Kenneth I. Warren
The prefix for maintenance projects is MP, or MRP in the case of maintenance repair projects. The prefix isfollowed by a four digit segment that designates the district and route number, a two digit segment thatdesignates the county, and a three digit segr:o¢nt that designates the unit number. For example, amaintenance project on US 80 in Hinds County could have an external number of MP-5080-25(045).
(The numbering scheme for other projects depends on the type project. However, in all cases the projectnumber will consist of a prefix followed by a four digit segment, a two digit segment and a three digit segmentenclosed in parenthesis.
When used in correspondence or other documents, the external number will precede the project number, e.g.,IM-0059-02(117) 100539/301. When additional information is needed or for clarity, the route and county mayalso be used, IM-0059-02(117) 100539/301 I-59 Madison County.
