Historical Note:

Friendly Societies

Friendly Societies were first established in Australia during the middle of the last century and their primary goal was mutual self-help, an ideal that is still adhered to today.

Friendly Societies were formed by ordinary Australians who banded together to provide, some of the medical and other essential services they lacked. Members made a small contribution each week to a common fund which paid benefits to those in the group who became ill, lost work, or suffered hardship. By World War II, Friendly Societies had developed products such as hospital and medical insurance, household insurance, personal and housing loans, and life insurance.

Over time, some of these welfare functions were incorporated into Commonwealth social welfare policies - by both Liberal and Labor governments, and in the early 1950's, the Friendly Society movement was losing its momentum. A new generation was turning away from the social and financial role once fulfilled by thousands of Manchester Unity lodges.

In the late 1970's, Friendly Societies entered the financial services field with products such as ten year investment bonds, which quickly became a popular and secure investment option. Today, Friendly Societies remain unique in the range of products and services they can offer as governed by the Life Insurance Act 1995 (Cwth). While most friendly societies see their primary role as insurers and fund managers, Australian Unity has chosen to diversify into other areas, including retirement villages, dental services and pharmacies.

Manchester Unity

As its name suggests, Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows had its origins in Manchester, England. It was established in Melbourne in 1840 by Augustus Greeves, a member of the MUIOOF in England, who had migrated to Australia in 1840. On his arrival in Melbourne he teamed up with a journalist, Thomas Strode, to form the first Lodge -The Australia Felix Lodge. This lodge received its Constitution on 7th December 1840 and this is recognised as the birthdate of Manchester Unity in Victoria.

The Society was governed by its Annual Moveable Conference (AMC) which, as its name implies, was held in a different Victorian country centre each year. Lodges sent delegates to the AMC, where they voted on policies and rules, and elected the new Board of Directors for the coming year

In 1925, women were admitted into the Lodges, which had previously only been open to men. One of the most memorable features of Melbourne's landscape is the Manchester Unity building, on the corner of Collins Street and Swanston Walk. The story of this building is told in the book 'Grand Dreams and Grand Men' (by B Hitchings, 1988, published by Caribou Publications, Melbourne)

As well as providing members with financial support in hard times, the Manchester Unity Lodges offered members a variety of social and fraternal activities.

In 1993 Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows in Victoria Friendly Society merged with the Association Friendly Society (ANA) to form Australian Unity Frienqly Society Limited, now known as Australian Unity Limited.
