##13 - 15/08/19 YWPS Newsletter Greetings From the Principal Ciao! What a wonderful day we had on Thursday celebrating Italian language and culture. Our children looked wonderful wearing the colours rosso, verde and blanco. And the creativity involved in some of their Italian inspired clothing was ingenious: I saw pizza chefs, sporting heroes, Marios, and even a pizza, and twin gelati walking around the school. Children were involved in lots of different activities, including cooking minestrone soup and mask making, and they totally enjoyed the ‘La Festa’ performance by La Commica Variety. Signorina Anna and Kylie organized a fun and educational day for all of us – GRAZIE! Coming up…Literacy and Numeracy Week Every day and every week is Literacy and Numeracy Week at YWPS, but we will be highlighting these key learning areas with other schools across the state starting Monday 26 August. To celebrate the week, I hope you can come along to our Open Afternoon on Wednesday 28 August. The afternoon will start at 2pm in the Library, where our school’s Annual Report will be presented by school leaders. The presentation will provide information about our students’ achievement levels in literacy and numeracy, and some of the approaches we use to support student success. The school will then be open to parents from 2.30pm to visit their child’s class and participate in some of the learning tasks occurring that session. Congratulations Earlier in the year, our Year 6 students submitted their Year 7 preferences for secondary school. Some students applied for the Select Entry Accelerated Learning Program (SEAL) at Williamstown High School, and I am very pleased to announce that a number of our students have been offered a place in this program. Congratulations to all these students! Playground Upgrades Our shade sail structure in the Prep play area will be replaced as soon as possible, but probably during the next school break to minimize disruption. The courtyard outside the Library, and the play space adjacent to Prep Narelle and Natalie will be upgraded using parent-raised funds (Trivia Night and Art Show). If you have some expertise in playground or landscape design and would like to help, please contact me through the office. Important Dates 21st Aug • District Track & Field 26th-30th Aug • Literacy & Numeracy Week 28th Aug • Presentation of Annual Report to our school community - 2.00 -2-30-Library 29th Aug • Father’s Day Cupcake Stall

PE/Sport NewsRound up of Winter SportOur school had great Winter Sport results. Of the five sports in which we participated and the ten teams able to advance, YWPS had six! Over the last month the teams had played Maribrynong Division Finals and from there, five teams played at the Western Metro Finals. These finals concluded on Monday. All the teams were great sports and strived to do well. Thanks to the grade 5/6 teachers in their many roles as coaches, supervisors and organisers. We really appreciate the support from parents who helped at the venues or who came along to cheer on the teams. A special thanks to Vicky Mannix for being so adaptable, jumping from coaching football (soccer) to hockey. Now we are focussed on Summer Sports.

Netball Premiership Finals - Western Metro Region“Cool! A mini bus!’ cried the team, as we scrambled on with excitement and anticipation for a great day of netball and fun in Geelong, on Thursday 8th August. We played a massive seven games with energy, enthusiasm and unending effort. We won 2 games and came extremely close in another 4 games. We ran, we passed, we rebounded, we threw goals and we cheered each on.Although we did not win the premiership flag, I think we won the award for the best sportsmanship and team spirit. We all had a fantastic time playing netball this year.Thank you to Christina for her champion coaching and to Re for organising the day. James Keating – Netball Captain

Hockey Finals - Western Metro Region When the A Team Hockey players played at Footscray Hockey Centre for a second time, they showed great sportsmanship and respect for the other teams. Sadly they didn’t get to the State finals but that doesn’t mean they didn’t try their best. Sure the A Team weren’t very happy that they didn’t win but everyone had great moments that they will cherish for a long time. All of this wouldn’t be possible without our amazing teachers to help us. Thanks Tegan and Re.From your Sports Captain Ned Graham.(Ned neglected to say that they came second with

two wins and a draw….an amazing feat!)

Australian Rules Finals - Western Metro RegionBoysMud, injuries and footy. That pretty much sums up our day on Tuesday 6th August. We arrived at the event after a long trip. Everyone was pumped and ready to play some footy. We chucked our gear on and warmed up ready to take on our first game.Unfortunately we won one and lost four as it was a very tough competition. But we were very happy to make it that far. We’d like to thank Ed, Neil and Re for organising the events and making it possible. Thank you.Billy Wigmore and Hudsen Gray - Aus Rules Captains(Missing in the photo is Billy Wigmore)

Australian Rules Finals - Western Metro Region - GirlsWhen the girls and boys Aus Rules teams went to their competition, the excitement was flowing through the bus.We arrived with our heads held high and our game face on.When we found a place to put our bags we got out our mouthguards and raced onto the field to get warmed up for our four games. The girl’s team was playing, the tension between the teams was tight.Of course we won. There was nothing that was going to stop us!On our second game we unfortunately lost, but we weren’t going to let that take us down.

Our third game was a success and when we won the game, spirits were high. Our last game was an unsuccessful game. We unfortunately lost.Thank you to Neil and Ed for training and coaching us.Sarah Dionysopoulos - Aus Rules Captain

Teeball Finals - Western Metro RegionWhen finally a certain Monday came around, there were thirteen 5/6 girls waiting eagerly to hop on a bus and head to Keilor Park. Once there, spirits were high and cheering was loud. After a few swings, runs, catches and bowls we were pumped. Even though we lost all of our games we still had a great time and showed why we are Great Kids Great Sports. Thank you to Grace and Paul for training and coaching us and of course to Re for organising it all.Chloe Hodgman - Teeball Captain(Missing in the photo are Cara Martinkus, Anika Mason, Mia Robinson and Maggie Pearson)

It was wonderful to see students participate in a range of Italian activities and experiences during our special Italian Festa Day last Thursday. The Italian Festa Day immerses students in the Italian culture and language in a fun and engaging way. Some of the activities students may have participated in included Italian cooking, Venetian mask making, Italian pizza people making, Italian literature activities and many more. It was also great to see the Italian language being used in classrooms throughout the week. On the Italian Festa day YWPS was filled with a sea of green(verde), white(bianco) and red(rosso) along with some Italian characters including Luigi, Mario, Strega Nona and others. The Italian performance ‘La Festa’ was enjoyed by all and the feedback regarding the gelato is a resounding ‘Delizioso’. The school gelati flavor tally was used in many classes as a mathematics activity and now gelati graphs are seen throughout the school with the use of Italian language. Interestingly, mango and lemon (limone)are the most popular flavours at YWPS. Hopefully, the Italian Festa Day inspired families and friends to explore and experience Italian culture and language at home or in the community. There are so many wonderful local Italian restaurants and shops in Yarraville including Pizza D’Asporto, Antipasto, L’Uccellino and Motorino. They are well worth a visit and they provide a great opportunity for students to use and practice some Italian language in real settings. I have heard that many students have Italian nights with Italian food and language. We would love to have some feedback or suggestions from families regarding the YWPS Italian Festa Day, so if you have a spare moment please use the following link https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/N2VVSWR to give us any thoughts or ideas regarding the day. This information will give us another perspective of the day that we can use to help us plan our 2020 Italian Day. We look forward to continuing our Italian language journey this year as learning other languages can ‘…give learners the world by opening their minds to other cultures and opening doors to new possibilities’.Ciao, Anna
