November 2013 celebrates Youth Month. This year, the Minister of Youth and Culture, the Hon. Lisa Hanna opted to do things a little differently.

As it drew closer to November, Minister Hanna invited YUTE staff in an evening of elegance at 689 by Brian Lumley to celebrate Youth Month Media Launch 2013.

This year theme “Reset Di Ting: The Courage to do things differently” will not only focus on youth employment but the courage of reshaping the minds of youth.

Ms. Hanna explained that youths were ‘boxed-in’ and as such the theme aims to “reset and rework the cultural mind-set of Jamaica’s youth, many of whom believe ‘a jus so di ting set’.”

The evening ended with exceptionally great hospitality from the staff of 689 by Brian Lumley and photo shoot with the Minister.

INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE GIRL CHILD 2013

On December 19, 2011, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution to declare 11 October as the International Day of the Girl Child, to recognize girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world. On Friday October 11, 2013, YUTE joined the United Nations in celebrating the girl child by hosting an empowerment session for the young ladies in our programme under the theme: “Breaking down the Barriers…”

The day provided a platform to highlight the continued importance of girls’ education as well as examples of successful, scalable and innovative approaches for tackling lingering challenges related to access, keeping girls in school and ensuring that their education is relevant and meaningful to their future.

Along with a surprise turnout of 165 participants, our guests, included: • Mrs. Siti Batoul Oussein – Deputy Director of the UNFPA , Jamaica • Mrs. Sandra Glasgow • Mrs. Shirley Duncan • Dr. Glenda Simms • Ms. Laura Butler • Dr. Kareema Daley • Ms. Jenni Headlam

• Dr. Joy Callender Representing the UNDP’s country representative; Mrs. Siti Oussein in her address the participants highlighted the challenges young girls face and therefore the need to promote girl’s rights and education. Informally, she was impressed with the energy of our participants as she got a firsthand experience of their stories, realities, how they reason through the discussions that took place. The event highlighted the need for fresh and creative perspectives to encourage girls’ education and their holistic empowerment.

The day’s activities included talks/presentations on: Sexual Health, Entrepreneurship, Nutrition, leadership, Self Esteem, social and professional etiquette and a vibrant discussion on abortion. The Session was held at The Girls Guide Headquarters; we began promptly at 10am and went until 3pm.

The participants were extremely excited and appreciative for the opportunity to bond as ladies and to learn all the presenters had to share with them. The presenters were equally satisfied for having

participated in the day’s activities and commended YUTE for implementing such an initiative. The exuberance of the participants had them requesting another activity similar to this one.

Miss Denise TullochAn Extra-Ordinary Woman

Miss Denise Tulloch stated that from an early age she has developed a passion for people; hence entering in the field of education.

Miss Tulloch has been an educator for the past thirty-seven (37) years, with her present post as the principal of the Eastern Kindergarten and Preparatory School, located on Windward Road in Kingston.

Miss Tulloch describe a regular day for her as one that she is not confine to her office as she would assist with teaching a class; assist with the selling of break and lunch and even cleaning of the class rooms.

This educator stated that she came in contact with YUTE through the Pre-Skills Classes that were held at the school and there on she fell in love with the programme.

Principal Tulloch stated that she would encourage the participants to make the very best of the programme. She also stated that when she was approached by the YUTE participant to come on board the apprenticeship programme she didn’t hesitate to come on board.

Miss Tulloch describe the YUTE participant Miss Jana Tomlinson, as an all a rounder, well mannered and display positive work ethics.

She stated that Jana is used in all areas of the school.

She teaches, conducts dance and cheerleading and does extract classes.

Miss Tulloch stated that she knew Miss Tomilson before the programme and she says that Jana has made remarkable

improvement in her behaviour.Miss Tulloch also stated that the programmes such as these should continue to bring a ray of hope to the young in our Jamaican society.

She found the programme to be a positive one which has impacted the lives of young people. With the varied structured programme such as Pre-Skills, U-TURN and Skills Training to name a few.
