Special Meeting

The Governing Board for Yuma Elementary School District No. One held a Special Meeting on February 22, 2016,

8:30 a.m. in the District Office Board Room, 450 West Sixth Street, Yuma, Arizona

Members present: Mr. Joseph Melchionne, President; Mrs. Karen Griffin, Clerk; Mrs. Maureen Irr,

Member; Mrs. Barbara Foote, Member; Mrs. Irene Montoya, Member

Others present: Mr. Luciano Muñoz, Executive Director of Human Resources, Mrs. Alice Quintero,

Board Secretary; and Steve Highlen, ASBA Consultant

Call to Order:

The Special Meeting was called to order at 8:30 am. By Mr. Melchionne. He then led the Board in the Pledge of

Allegiance and a moment of silence. Mr. Melchionne then asked for a motion to approve the agenda as is. Mrs.

Montoya made the motion and seconded by Mrs. Griffin. The motion passed unanimously.

New Business:

2.1 Mr. Melchionne then introduced Mr. Highlen. Mr. Highlen stated that the purpose of the Special Meeting was to provide the Governing Board Members with information and may discuss the screening process of applicants for the position of District Superintendent.

2.2 The meeting adjourned to Executive Session @ 8:34 a.m. per A.R.S. 38-431.04 (A) (1).

2.2.1 The School Board returned to regular session @ 12:50 p.m.

2.3 The Governing Board will discuss applicants for the position of District Superintendent and may consider and approve naming candidates to be interviewed for the position. Mrs. Griffin made the motion directing ASBA to contact Suzanne Alka, Duane Sheppard, Jamie Sheldahl, and Barbara Wright to schedule a formal interview with the Board.

2.4 The Governing Board will discuss the interview process and schedule and may consider directing

ASBA to construct the interview schedule with candidates named by the Board for the position of District Superintendent. Mr. Highlen went through the process of conducting all interviews on March 3, 2016 and having the Public Forum on the same day in the evening from 6-7:30pm to meet the candidates. Interviews will commence at 9:30 am and conclude by 4:30 pm. The Public Forum will start at 6:00 p.m. in the Post Auditorium.

2.5 The Governing Board will discuss and may consider approving ASBA to construct questions to

ask candidates during the interview process for District Superintendent. Mr. Highlen presented the Board with printed documents of the presentation questions to be considered in the interview. Mrs. Irr made a motion for the Board to select 7 questions to be submitted to Mr. Muñoz. Mrs. Foote seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.

2.6 The Governing Board will discuss and may direct ASBA to work with District administration to

finalize necessary plans for the community candidate forum related to the search for a new District Superintendent. Mr. Muñoz expressed that the Post Auditorium has been reserved. Table and microphones will be made available. The response cards will be supplied and available as well as staff to help facilitate the response cards being given to Mr. Highlen, who will be moderating the questioning. Promoting the public forum will be done through site administrators. Announcements to students and parents, marquee’s at sites, emails, Facebook, and Twitter. The Governing Board will then meet again on March 4, 2016 at 8:30 a.m. to review the response cards from the public.
