Ysgol Gymraeg Cwmnedd Behaviour Policy

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) is at the heart of our

school’s planning, policies, practice and ethos. As a rights-respecting school we not only teach about children’s rights but also model rights and respect in all relationships – Linked

to Articles 3 & 12 (CRC)

The aim of this Policy is to create a homely, caring, friendly and safe school for every one of our pupils. Thus, allowing them to learn in a relaxed and disciplined environment and take as much advantage as possible from the education offered to them at our school. It is a primary aim of our school that every member of the school community feels safe, valued and respected, and that each person is treated fairly and well. We are a caring community, whose values are built on mutual trust and respect for all. The school’s behaviour policy is therefore designed to support the way in which all members of the school can live and work together in a supportive way. It aims to promote an environment where everyone feels happy, safe and secure. Promoting good behaviour is the responsibility of all staff. The school has a number of school rules. This is a means of promoting good relationships, so that people can work together with the common purpose of helping everyone to learn. This policy supports the school community in aiming to allow everyone to work together in an effective and considerate way. The school expects every member of the school community to behave in a considerate way towards others. We treat all children fairly and apply this behaviour policy in a consistent way. The school rewards good behaviour, as it believes that this will develop an ethos of kindness and cooperation. This policy is designed to promote good behaviour, rather than merely deter anti-social behaviour. Teachers have the right to teach, and pupils have the right to learn in a classroom free from disruptive behaviour – a classroom that both reflects teachers’ own behavioural expectations and creates an atmosphere in which pupil self-esteem can flourish. ‘Official’ School Rules

1. Always attempt to speak Welsh 2. Work my very best 3. Sit quietly and listen intently 4. Raise my hand to answer 5. Be a friend to everyone General Rules for the School 1. Bullying and racism are always unacceptable behavior. Fortunately, most pupils at our school show a caring, responsible attitude. 2. Children are expected to be polite and helpful at all times. Dangerous and irresponsible behaviour, swearing and bad language are not acceptable. 3. Children are expected to walk around the school and make way or hold doors open for younger children and adults. 4. To keep the school as “Eco friendly “as possible. Litter is to be placed in the containers provided around the school. We recycle paper, cardboard and milk cartons. We switch off electricity when it is not needed, compost bio-degradable materials, close doors and turn off taps after use.

5. Children must not bring toys or games to school, except with special permission, e.g. as part of a class project. For those who disregard this rule, and whose belongings disappear or are broken, the school will not be held responsible. 6. Chewing gum, sweets and lollipops are not allowed in school. 7. Children should not be in the school buildings before 8.45am (other than those who attend breakfast club), after school is finished (other than those who attend after school clubs) or during playtimes, except with special permission. 8. Children should not come to school before 8.35am, unless they are attending Breakfast Club. 9. Children are expected to change clothing and footwear for P.E, Swimming and Games. P.E. Indoors: Shorts and T-shirt P.E. Games Outdoors: Change of clothing is required, otherwise children will not be allowed to participate in the lesson. * N.B. Jewellery is not allowed to be worn during P.E., Games lessons. 10. If a child is absent or expected to be absent, an explanation is required from parents, written or verbal. Children are not allowed to leave the school premises unaccompanied during the school session, unless parents request this in writing – this includes the lunch period if children usually stay for lunch. 11. Unbreakable containers for drinks should be brought. Glass bottles are not allowed. Neither are fizzy drinks.

Rewards and Sanctions We praise and reward children for good behaviour in a variety of ways:

teachers congratulate children;

Every Friday we hold an “Awards Assembly” where children in each class are rewarded for their efforts. We distribute certificates to children either for consistent good behaviour or work, or to acknowledge outstanding effort or acts of kindness in school.

Class teachers award personal rewards (stickers and stamps in Early Years) to acknowledge effort, good behaviour etc. This will be done by endeavouring to improve the pupils' general discipline and reward good behaviour. Under the new system all pupils will be made aware of how they are expected to behave and the steps / sanctions that will follow if they do not. The plan is split into three areas. 1) Behaviour within the classroom. 2) Behaviour on the yard (break time and lunch times). 3) Pupils who do not respond to the system.

Page 4: Ysgol Gymraeg Cwmneddd6vsczyu1rky0.cloudfront.net/32804_b/wp-content/uploads/... · 2019-02-01 · 5. Children must not bring toys or games to school, except with special permission,

Discipline within the Classroom To encourage positive behaviour that will benefit teaching and learning, we intend to develop an environment where the pupils are encouraged to respond immediately or the first time to instructions given by teachers or assistants. To provide focus for this, on each classroom wall there will be • Classroom Rules • 4 steps that will be followed should a pupil not follow the rules. • Rewards that could follow from following rules (individual and class rewards). A system of putting green tokens in a jar for following school rules. Every Friday in the school assembly the class with the most tokens are given 5 minutes extra playtime as a reward. We also use the digital reward system of Class Dojo. • Examples of unacceptable behaviour that would lead immediately to step 4 of sanctions. It is hoped that through operating a more structured and consistent pattern of discipline, we will develop a more positive attitude in the classroom. However, should a pupil reach step 4 twice or more in a week, a note will be sent home to advise parents of this. Red sanctions will be recorded on SIMS and monitored by the Headteacher.

Unacceptable Behaviour - Examples Pupils who engage in any of the behaviour listed below in class will receive no warnings and will be sent to the headmaster immediately

- Fighting - Swearing - Biting - Challenging behaviour towards teachers or assistants Any behaviour that endangers Health and Safety.

Page 5: Ysgol Gymraeg Cwmneddd6vsczyu1rky0.cloudfront.net/32804_b/wp-content/uploads/... · 2019-02-01 · 5. Children must not bring toys or games to school, except with special permission,

Lunchtimes / Breaktimes To ensure consistency in discipline on the yard ( breaktimes and lunchtimes ), a system of yellow and red marks will be used. Teaching staff and lunchtime supervisors will use the same system. Yellow Sanctions First Misbehaviour – verbal warning / explanation of expected behaviour. Second Misbehaviour – Pupil will not be allowed to take part in play activities for the remainder of the session and will be required to stand apart from other pupils near supervising staff. If a child continually receives yellow marks (e.g. 4 days out of 5) a red mark will be given. Red Sanctions A red mark will be recorded by the class teacher at the end of a session on SIMS First Red Mark – Verbal warning and stand apart for rest of session. Second Red Mark – as the first but note sent home to advise parents that their child

is on his/her last warning for the next half term. Third Red Mark – Another note sent home and pupil will lose lunch time break for remainder of that week. Fourth Red Mark – Parents contacted to ask them to collect pupil from school the following lunchtime. Fifth Red Card – Parents asked to collect child at lunchtime for the following week. Should the pattern of bad behaviour be repeated, the parents will be invited to school to discuss an IBP. At the beginning of a new half term, all pupils will begin with a clean slate. Examples of yellow and red yellow sanctions are included at the end of the pack. Green Tokens Teachers and supervisors will also have a Green Tokens. This will be given to children whose behaviour deserves praise e.g. sharing, respect, courtesy, honesty and behaviour.

Page 6: Ysgol Gymraeg Cwmneddd6vsczyu1rky0.cloudfront.net/32804_b/wp-content/uploads/... · 2019-02-01 · 5. Children must not bring toys or games to school, except with special permission,

Individual Behaviour Plan It is expected that some children will not respond to the Classroom / Break Systems and that a note home is not sufficient to improve the discipline. In these instances, the parents will be invited to school to agree on an IBP (Individual Behaviour Plan) between the teacher, head teacher, pupil and parents. The IBP will concentrate on one or two particular behaviour targets that will be noted at the beginning of the plan. We will need to ensure that the child understands exactly what is expected of them. With the agreement of the parents, the pupil and the teacher, meaningful sanctions will be included in every IBP should the behaviour not improve e.g.

child has to stay with teacher/supervisor on the yard (minder/mentor)

a written record will be kept each time unacceptable behaviour is displayed

parents will be called in for an interview with the child present when appropriate

where there is a need, some pupils will visit Miss Jones in small groups for PSE / Nurture Group sessions, working with the child for 10-15 minutes over a period of time. The aim being to investigate the reasons behind the misbehaviour and to discuss ways of improving their attitude towards other children.

sanctions at home must be agreed and carried out

parents should be warned that lunch time or five day suspension could be the next step

From the outset, it’s imperative to include the parents, as the IBP is an agreement between them and the school and ensuring that they are committed to supporting the discipline steps at home. It must be stressed that this is the last step within the school's Discipline Plan. The final step is that the school is ready to exclude children who consistently fail to respond to the discipline system.
