The interview of a lifetime came true for me this week when I got to visit with Bruce Hyman of B.T.C. Entertainment of Pittsfield. Right away I felt at

ease and ready to find out how he got his start in the entertainment business.

Bruce said he started out at the ripe old age of 9 (38 years ago) in Clark, New Jersey when he would regularly ride his bike to the next town to the Abracadabra Magic Shop owned by Bob Boker and buy a magic trick. He would learn these tricks and go out and do birthday parties and shows. He said that David Copperfield, who got his start from the same magic shop, was his competition for some of these parties This magic shop, Bruce recently found out is still open but in a different loca-tion. We all know what became of David Copperfield, and we know that Bruce is still doing birthday parties, loving every minute of it as Bowey The Clown or Mr. Trivia Game Show or any of the other characters he takes on. “I’m making a living having a good time, while making people laugh and smile,” Bruce said.

After moving to the Berkshires

in 1977, Bruce helped run the summer camp at Camp Kingsmont in Stockbridge. This is where he met his future wife, Kim in 1978. This is also where he ran into an old friend, Timothy Wenk, who was a magi-cian and performer. Timothy was the one who Bruce credited as being the person who got him to start performing again after tak-ing a few years off.

In 2007 Bruce celebrated his 20th year performing in the Berkshires. “It is an honor being invited into someone’s home and making them laugh.”

Bruce said he had great response with being Bowey the Clown and was very busy, but he was only one person. Two years ago he started B.T.C. Entertainment, becoming a booking agent for other clowns, magicians, those who do singing telegrams, balloon-o-grams, ven-triloquists, and jugglers, among

others. He has tried to stay in the Berkshires with this as he said there are so many talented people in this area.

Bruce’s family has become a part of the business with his wife Kim, who is a certified art teacher at Capeless & Williams Elementary School, being a face painter and daughter Kaileigh doing Princess Parties and magic. Kaileigh has been involved in drama since age 3 and is also involved in swimming, chorus and acting, working hard at all she does. Bruce said that she was a shy girl, who at first didn’t want to do the Princess character. She

did decide to do it on her own and now glows when she takes on a character.

Bruce told of many of his memorable moments in his busi-ness. He has performed for 200 kids at a school, making over 200 balloon characters in less than an hour, then the next day per-formed at a birthday party with only a family of four present. “Big or small, they are all fun,” he said.

Some of his best memories are of opening at Tanglewood for Rafi, and being called later by Joan Van Ark who had seen him and wanted him to join her on stage at Williams College with a

balloon bouquet for her per-formance of “Send in the Clowns.” Bruce was also asked to open for Pete Seger when he did a ben-efit for the PCPs in the water at Riverfest.

He then went on to tell me of his most touching show. This was for a six-year-olds birthday

party. He was having a very hard time getting the boy to smile, but finally he came around and was joining in and started smil-ing and laughing. The mother explained to Bruce at the end of the show why this was. The child had lost his father in a motor-cycle accident two days before the party and the mother did not want to upset him even more by skipping over his birthday party.

“This reminds me of why I do this,” Bruce said.

We talked about another of Bruce’s characters; Mr. Trivia Game Show, which he said, can be catered to different age groups and occasions and has become very popular. He said that he has also taught classes in balloon animals at the Circus Camp at Berkshire Community College.

I did get to see Bruce make some of his balloon characters, which was quite fascinating, as his hands moved quickly, creat-ing animal and alien creatures. Bruce said that balloon art has expanded greatly over the years by adding color, a variety of bal-loons, and the number of bal-loons in some of these creations.

A favorite among boys is the alien and with the girls it is the Little Mermaid, he said.

Bruce has performed in many places from home birthday par-ties to nursing homes to kids from 2 to 99. “Everybody loves a clown and everyone loves to be entertained,” he said.

On Thursday nights Bowey the Clown can be seen perform-ing at Pete & Chris Restaurant at 451 Dalton Ave. from 5-7 p.m.

The Williams College Department of Music will pres-ent a Class of 1960 Lecture fea-turing Daniel Melamed, J.S. Bach Scholar, on Wednesday, Feb. 20 at 4:15 p.m. in Bernhard Music Center, Room 30 on the Williams College campus. This free event is open to the public.

Daniel R. Melamed is Professor of Musicology at the Jacobs School of Music, Indiana University. He is the author of Hearing Bach’s Passions and J. S. Bach and the German Motet, co-author (with Michael Marissen) of An Introduction

to Bach Studies, and editor of Bach Studies 2. He has published articles, reviews and musical edi-tions on J. S. Bach and members of the Bach family, and serves as associate editor of the Journal of Musicology.

The Class of 1960 Scholars Fund, established at their 25th Reunion, brings eminent researchers from other col-leges and universities to campus to give colloquia. In advance of the colloquia, the group of 1960’s Scholars read and discuss the speakers’ work with faculty members and students.

In De Materie (called “one of the most significant scores pro-duced by a European composer in the last 20 years”) Dutch icono-clast Louis Andriessen explores the porous boundaries between

objective and subjective truth by examining relationships between physical matter and atomic phys-ics, religious ecstasy, artistic inspi-ration, love, and death, with texts ranging from a vision by the 13th century Dutch mystic Hadewijch to a treatise by the 17th centu-ry Dutch scientist/philosopher Gorlaeus, from Marie Curie’s journal to recollections about Piet Mondrian’s love of boogie-woogie, from a sonnet by Willem Kloos to mathematical and ship-building textbooks.

The Williams Symphonic Winds is a 40-50 member ensem-ble dedicated to presenting per-formances of the most significant music written for the chamber and large wind ensemble medi-ums. Music Director Steven Dennis Bodner has developed the ensemble’s identity as a leading proponent of the performance of new music on campus. The ensemble has commissioned and premiered a number of works by contemporary composers, includ-ing Williams faculty and alumni.

Screening and panel discus-sions of Oscar nominated short films to be held Sunday, Feb., 17 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. at the Colonial Theater. In 1997 the academy presented its first “Shorts!” program in the spring, following that year’s Academy Awards ceremony. The event sold out every year thereafter, as audi-ences embraced the opportunity not only to see the nominees and winners in the Animated and

Live Action Short Film catego-ries, but also to hear from some of the filmmakers.

Flash forward to 2005. The Academy began screening the nominated short films the week before the Oscars, when the win-ners were yet to be determined. Last year Taylor Hackford, pro-ducer-director of Ray and a past Live Action Short Film winner himself, hosted panel discussions with the nominated filmmak-

ers to the delight of a capacity crowd. “Shorts!” promises those in attendance an exclusive insid-er’s look at the top short films of 2007 before the winners are announced on Sunday, Feb. 24. The 14th Annual Father and Daughter Valentine Dance will be held on Sunday, February 17 at St. Anthony’s Parish Center on Marshall Street, North Adams from 6 to 9 p.m. This semi-for-mal event is for fathers, or father figures, and their daughters of all ages. People have attended pre-vious events with their fathers, grandfathers, uncles, neighbors

St. John’s Offers Financial Workshop To The Public

A.L.I.V.E. Music Ministry will be holding a benefit concert on February 17, 2008 at 4:00 p.m. for Pastor Ken Mick, the pastor at the Sovereign Grace Baptist Church in Savoy and the Fellowship Bible Church which currently meets at the BMC Chapel. Pastor Mick is being treated for polycystic kid-ney disease, a hereditary disease which usually destroys the kid-ney function in the late 50’s /early 60’s. For some reason Pastor Ken’s disease progressed earlier than most. His kidney function was at 15 percent and dialysis will most likely be needed by January 2009 This could reduce his ability to earn an income from 50 to 75 percent.

He has been a pastor for 15 years between Pennsylvania and

Massachusetts, a camp chaplain, he has also taken two preach-ing mission trips to Buff Bay, Jamaica, is the Director of Search the Scriptures: a speaking and writing, counseling ministry of Sovereign Grace Baptist Church. Pastor Ken has a Bachelors degree in elementary education and a master’s degree in religion. In his spare time he loves history, reading, hiking, and writing. He is also a guitarist in Crosstalk Praise Band and coaches Lanesboro youth soccer. He and his wife, Beth, live in Lanesboro with their four children.

As a college student, Ken would spend Sunday afternoons with different church families. One family had a young girl named Anna. Many years later as Ken

and family attended family camp in Pennsylvania; they became friends with the Thorburn fam-ily: Anna and Richard, the same young girl Ken knew from col-lege. Rich was willing to donate a kidney to Ken’s father who also had kidney disease. Before the operation, Ken’s dad got a cadav-er donor.

When Rich became aware of Ken’s need, he volunteered his kidney to Ken. Both Ken and Rich needed cash to cover the month out of work. Ken is also in need of money to help pay for a life time of anti-rejection medications. His goal is $70,000. Money has come in for the time out of work and January 16th the surgery occurred.

As prayer requests were sent

out, e-mails among them, Ken’s wife posted Prayer requests to Berkshire Christian home-school network, a group of which Beth is a member. One on that list brought Ken’s need to the attention of A.L.I.V.E. Music Ministry. As fellow Christians the A.L.I.V.E. Music Ministry wants to give back to those who also give of themselves for the Lord. The benefit concert will be their way of doing that, three groups performing for this benefit - the Praise and Worship Team from Stamford Community Church, the Honig Family and the A.L.I.V.E. Music Ministry. The donations will come in the form of a free will offering which will go to Pastor Ken and his family for the ongoing medications and

The Main Street Stage announces today that they will be running a youth theater vacation camp during February vacation. The classes will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 18 - Thursday, Feb. 21 and Friday, Feb. 22 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be a performance of their work on Friday, Feb. 22 at 6 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 23 at 4 p.m. The students will work as an ensemble; learn acting games and techniques learn basic stage combat. The Berkshire Humane Society will be celebrating Adopt-a-Rescued-Rabbit Month by giving away a special Bunny Adoption Kit to each family adopting a rescue rabbit at BHS during February. “Each year thousands of bunnies are relinquished to shelters and rescue organizations when their owners decide they no longer want them,” says Nikki Kellogg, Small Animal caregiver at the Berkshire Humane Society. Kellogg noted that Petfinder.com, the searchable database of home-less pets of all kinds, initiated

Adopt-a-Rescued-Rabbit Month to draw attention to the fact that rabbits are the third most likely animal to find themselves need-ing a new home. “ Most people know that dogs and cats end up homeless, but on any given day there are over 5,000 rabbits avail-able for adoption on Petfinder.com and we have been averaging five to six bunnies per month at our shelter”, added Kellogg. Rabbits make excellent com-panions. They can live eight to ten years and bond closely to their adopters. They are quiet but

Helping animals and peo-ple since 1992, the Berkshire Humane Society offers free educational programs for area school children, a pet-food bank for economically distressed pet owners, and also works with The Elizabeth Freeman Center to

provide foster care assistance for the pets of women in crisis. BHS receives no public funding and relies on memberships and dona-tions to continue to help animals and people. In 2007, BHS placed 784 homeless animals into lov-ing forever homes. The shelter is open Tuesday-Saturday 10 a.m. -4 p.m., Thursday evenings 5-8 p.m., and Sundays 1-4 p.m. The shelter closes at noon on the last Wednesday of each month for staff meetings. Berkshire Humane Society Celebrates Adopt-a-Rescued-Rabbit Month

The Berkshire Botanical Garden and MCLA are offering two courses designed for the seri-ous home gardener and the hor-ticultural professional. Offerings will be Landscape Design I and Mixed Border Design. The Horticulture Certificate Program is a well-established profes-sional development program in its tenth year of operation. The Garden is located at the intersec-tion of Routes 102 and 183 in Stockbridge, MA.

“Landscape Design I” is a level I course offered on Tuesday eve-nings, March 4-April 1 from 6 -9 PM. Focus on the “big pic-ture” and learn the principles of

design, importance of drainage, and view slides of both success-ful and troubled landscapes. Course also includes site selec-tion, design concepts and client presentations. Students will com-plete a landscape design project, drawn to scale. This course is 5 sessions. Instructor Christine McGrath, M.L.A. a landscape architect for Okerstrom-Lang, full service landscape design company. At the Garden besides landscape design, she teaches graphics and drafting.

“Mixed Border Design” is a level II course offered on Wednesday evenings March 5-26 from 6-9 p.m. Designing,

planting and maintaining a mixed border in the northeast combines artistry and personal style. View a selection of perenni-als, ornamental grasses, fruiting shrubs and bulbs. Instructor Bob Hyland, co-owner of Loomis Creek Nursery is a public garden consultant and author. He has worked for 25 years in public gardens including the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Longwood Gardens and San Francisco Botanical Garden.

The cost of the first course is $145, the cost of the second

The Annual Berkshire County High School Art Show returns for its 22nd year at the Norman Rockwell Museum with a spe-cial exhibition opening reception to be held on Saturday, Feb. 2, from 1 to 5 p.m. Enjoy an after-noon in celebration of the tal-ented youth of Berkshire County high schools, whose art will be on view. At 2 p.m., commentary by graphic novelists Andy Fish and Veronica Hebard will offer insights into the worlds of two

gifted artists who are profession-al illustrators.

The High School Art Show showcases the work of high school students in Berkshire County in grades 9 through 12, and will be on view at the Museum through March 2, 2008. Students sub-mit original works to the yearly exhibition, in a variety of media, including painting, drawing and sculpture. The young artists learn how to prepare their work for a gallery show, acquire a personal

understanding of the exhibition process, and have the exciting opportunity to exhibit their work in a professional Museum setting. Admission to the High School Art Show is free for all Berkshire County high school students, their families, and teachers, and to others with regular Museum admission. The Pleasant Valley Wildlife Sanctuary in Lenox will be spon-soring a bird banding demon-stration on Saturday, Feb. 16, from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Here’s a chance to observe handheld birds. Join us as the proper use of mist nets is demonstrated on the and band the birds that are cap-tured. You will learn what valu-able information can be obtained by this fieldwork. Participants will help gather data and release the birds unharmed. Free with regular sanctuary admission. Participants are free to come and go during the program.

Christyna Laubach, Sanctuary volunteer, Science Teacher, Lenox Memorial Middle and High School will instruct all participants in this wonder-ful demonstration.
