Year 7 English Semester 2 Outline: Heroes & Villains This semester will explore the ways we are influenced by famous figures – heroic and villainous. We are affected by texts that can influence our attitudes, values and understandings. All texts promote ideas that might possibly shape our attitudes. This course will help you decipher the values promoted by texts, as well as appreciate how heroic ideals and villainous tendencies are generated. Topic/Dates Outline Tasks Weighting Instructional Strategies Term 3 Weeks 1 - 3 News & Current Affairs This unit will consider the way that news is constructed to affect the target audience. Through a close study of language, format, images and selection of details, we will explore codes that influence an audience. Task 1 Analysis of news: Short Answers written (in-class, moderated task) 15% Reading/ Viewing & Writing Goal setting: Learning to learn theory. Placemat, scaffolding tools. Weeks 4-7 Through the study of drama history, we will learn how drama combines verbal and non- verbal elements to enable a story to come to life on stage: Characterisation Sets Language Props Conflict Task 2 In groups, design & promote your performance of a chosen drama. Each group member will then provide an explanation of verbal and non- verbal aspects of their character, and issues. 15% Reading/ Speaking & Listening Evaluative thinking in response to issues & ideas – ranking hierarchy/ extent barometer/ lineup. Y Chart review speaking/ listening skills. Weeks 8 – 10 Short stories Do good guys always get the girl? Are villains always brought to justice? What happens when stories FAIL to meet our expectations? Task 3 Short fiction report 15% Writing & Reading Concept attainment. Cross- classification chart.
