Meet the Artists

The Youth Orchestra is a Queens-basedYouth Orchestra since 1996, and has beena 501 (c) (3) organization since 2002. Themission is to provide orchestra trainingand performing opportunities for youngmusical students age 10–18, with aunique repertory that includes classical,popular, jazz, broadway, film, and Asianmusic. The Orchestra premieres and com-missions works by American and Asiancomposers and believe in global cultureexperiences, which is why we have orga-nized summer concert tours to Asia,Europe, and the East Coast.

New members are recruited through audi-tions in September and January, and weeklyrehearsals take place at Middle School 158in Bayside, New York from September toMay. The orchestra presents two formalconcerts annually. One free Holiday Concertfor the community during the holiday sea-son in Queens and an Annual Concert atLincoln Center in the spring. The Orchestraalso serves the Queens community by per-forming concerts at senior centers, commu-nity centers, and nursing homes.

During the 2014–15 season the Orchestraperformed at Poppenhusen Institute inCollege Point on December 6, SilvercrestCenter for Nursing and Rehabilitation inBriarwood on December 7, Cardozo HighSchool in Bayside on December 14, theTaiwan Center in Flushing on April 18, andat tonight’s concert at Alice Tully Hall. This

summer, the Orchestra will travel to Tokyoand Taipei for concerts and sightseeing.

A native of Kaohsiung, Taiwan, Mr. Chungbegan his musical studies in piano, violin,and cello at the ages of five and nine.Following a successful musical career inhigh school, he attended the NationalTaiwan Normal University where hemajored in cello, minored in piano, and wasawarded the certificate of music educa-tion. Upon moving to the United States,Mr. Chung studied under the tutelage ofcellist Peter Wiley (of Guarneri StringQuartet), at the Conservatory of Music atPurchase–SUNY, where he received bothhis bachelor’s and master’s degrees inmusic performance.

Mr. Chung’s wide professional experienceencompasses symphony orchestra andchamber music performances, conducting,teaching, studio recording and administra-tion. He served as associate principal cellistof the Taipei Symphony Orchestra, principalcellist of the Yin-Qi Symphony Orchestra &Chorus, and the Yin-Qi Chamber Orchestrain Taiwan. He performed with the ChineseCommunity Chamber Orchestra at Carnegie

Hall, New York Symphony Orchestra, andthe Amadeus String Quartet and Piano Trio.Mr. Chung’s teaching positions were at theGuang-Ren High School, Xi-MenElementary School, and Guan-Du ChristianCollege in Taiwan.

He has been serving as the music director,cello and piano instructor at the Song ofSongs Music School, Eastern School ofMusic, Amadeus Conservatory of Music, andMelody Time Music Center in the UnitedStates. In 2003 he was the music directorand featured cellist for the world premiere ofan original Chinese-language adaptation of AStreetcar Named Desire at the Hwa-SunCulture Center in Taipei, Taiwan.

At Alice Tully Hall, with Youth Orchestra,CYCNY, Mr. Chung performed Elgar’s CelloConcerto as soloist in 2010, and conductedthe world premiere of Yasuhiko Fukuoka’sJourney of a Thousand Miles in 2012; theworld premiere of Steve Margoshes’Symphony Dance from Fame-The Musical,as well as the U.S. premiere of Shui-LongMa’s Searching Concerto for Gu-Zhengand Orchestra with Hao-Yin Huang as Gu-Zheng soloist in 2013; and the U.S. pre-miere of Fu-Tong Wong’s SymphonyCondor Hero in 2014.

Mr. Chung has long believed that musichas the power to transform lives, to tran-scend cultures and languages and to bringpeople together in important and lastingways. It is for this reason that he dedicateshis life toward inspiring a new generationof young musicians to pursue their dreamsthrough the challenging and life-changingprocess of music education.

New York–raised trumpeter Lovell ParkChang holds a bachelor’s degree from theManhattan School of Music and is cur-rently pursuing a dual degree program inmaster’s of music and master of educationfrom Manhattan School of Music. Some ofhis most recent accomplishment includegetting accepted by Teachers College atColumbia University, organizing a springrecital, and winning the Fuchs Compe -tition for Chamber Music. He was therecipient of the Carmine CarusoScholarship in 2012.

Since 2002, Mr. Chang performs annuallywith Youth Orchestra CYCNY at a variety ofperformance spaces, including CardozoHigh School, Silvercrest Center for Nursingand Rehabilitation, and Alice Tully Hall. Oneof his latest performances with the orches-tra included traveling to Japan and Taiwan.His music studies began at age three, ini-tially on the piano, and subsequently tookprivate lessons on a number of otherinstruments including violin, clarinet, flute,cello, trombone, and oboe. Academically,he attended Stuyvesant High School whileattending the pre-college division atManhattan School of Music majoring inpiano and eventually the trumpet. Mr.Chang is currently taking trumpet lessonswith Thomas V. Smith of the New YorkPhilharmonic and previously studied withVincent Penzarella, a retired member ofthe New York Philharmonic.

Composer Fu-Tong Wong (b. 1948) wasborn in 1948 in Guangdong Province,China. He received professional musicaltraining at an early age in Guangzhou andhas had firsthand experience with China’sCultural Revolution and Down to theCountryside Movement. In the early 1970s,Mr. Wong managed to arrive in New YorkCity through Macau and then Hong Kong.With professor Ma Si-Hong’s recognitionand assistance, he entered Kent StateUniversity, Ohio, and received his master’sin violin performance in 1978. In 1983 Mr.Wong was recruited from United States toTaiwan to become a faculty member at theNational Taiwan University of Arts (nowTaipei University of Arts). He continueddevoting himself in the areas of teaching asa music professor until retiring in 2013from Tainan University of Technology.Aside from teaching at school, Mr. Wongspent his time composing, writing, creatingviolin teaching materials, and recording hisworks with world-renown artists.

Notable students of Mr. Wong’s include theconcertmaster of Taipei SymphonyOrchestra, Wei-Zhong Chiang; music direc-tor of Philharmonic Moment, Jing-PoChiang; music department chair of TaichungUniversity of Education, Nicole Hsu; andPhD.s in music Yu-Yu Zhu, Yu-Chi Wong,and Lin-Ya Su, among others. Mr. Wongalso spent 20 years creating a teaching sys-tem targeting amateur violin students andlovers. The 12 volumes he wrote have suc-cessfully trained numerous entry-level violinstudents and educators alike into capableplayers and teachers. In recent years,theere have been several research and

PhD. theses written about Mr. Wong’s vio-lin teaching method. As a prolific writer hepublished many books on violin playing andteaching as well, such as Discussing Violinand Music, Teaching how to teach, learninghow to teach, The study and practice of vio-lin group-teaching, String orchestra training,Thesis and Essays on violin teaching, Violinscale system, Wong’s music theory, andWong’s Essays, among others.

Over the years Mr. Wong has composedthe four-acts opera Xi-Shi, SymphonyCondor Heroes, Rhapsody of Taiwan,Variations on the Theme of Hoyahue, thesymphonic chorus Heart Sutra, and manyothers. His works have been played in sev-eral countries and warmed the hearts ofmany, in addition to receiving criticalacclaim. The list of Mr. Wong’s CD includesthe story of the Symphony Condor Heroes.Mr. Wong has said the following:

38 years ago, when I was in graduateschool in America, a classmate fromTaiwan lent me a 36 volume novel titledThe Condor Heroes. This was my firsttime reading Jin Yong’s martial arts noveland I was immediately mesmerized. Atthat time I made a momentous vow,which was so much bigger than what Iwas actually capable of. I vowed thatwithin my lifetime, I would write a sym-phony for this novel.

To make a vow is easy, but to realize itcan be difficult. I did not major in com-position, and I never learned any tech-niques required for composing.

However, the vow gave me tremendousmotivation. Therefore, after receivingmy master’s degree in violin perfor-mance, I started from scratch at age 30,and become the pupil of compositionmasters, and learned the lessons requiredfor composing, especially counterpoint.

So just like that, after studying for 10years, I felt confident enough that Istarted composing. After finishing thefirst draft, it was rehearsed, edited, pre-miered, edited again, performed, andedited even more. It might have brokenthe world record for longest timerequired to finish writing a musical piece.

Most recently, I picked up the conduct-ing baton and performed severalSymphony Condor Heroes concerts.Orchestras I had worked with includeShenzhen Symphony Orchestra, Guang -zhou Symphony Orchestra, HunanSymphony Orchestra, and State YouthOrchestra of Armenia (SYOA). Mydream is to collaborate with orchestrasall over the world and perform 100 con-certs of Symphony Condor Heroeswithin my lifetime.

Tyzen Hsiao (1938–2015), a Taiwanese–American composer of the neo-Romanticschool, many of his vocal works set poemswritten in Taiwanese, the mother tongueof the majority of the island’s residents.His compositions stand as a musical mani-festation of the Taiwanese literature move-ment that revitalized the island’s literaryand performing arts in the 1970s and1980s. Mr. Hsiao’s career in musicincluded additional success as a pianistand conductor.

His rich tonal style earned him an interna-tional reputation as “Taiwan’s Rach -maninoff.” His compositions includeworks for solo instruments and chamberensembles, many works for solo voice,

and large-scale pieces for orchestras andchoirs with soloists. Mr. Hsiao’s art songshave become standard repertory in Taiwan.“Taiwan the Formosa” or “TaiwanEvergreen” has achieved status as theTaiwan’s unofficial national anthem. Thesong appears as well in the1947 Overture.Other well-known art songs include “TheFairest Flower”; “Eternal Hometown,” aTaiwanese-language setting of Psalm 23;and “I Love Taiwan.” He has also wonacclaim for his folk-song settings, such as“Brother Andon Goes to Market” and“The Grasshopper and the Rooster.” Manyof Mr. Hsiao’s songs also exist in orches-tral song versions.

Mr. Hsiao’s chamber music includes worksfor piano four hands, string quartets, pianoquintets. The art songs formed the basis ofserenades for solo violin and piano as wellas other chamber combinations. His musicfor solo piano was less well-known inTaiwan until performances by Lina Yeh andothers began to bring this repertoire intoprominence around the turn of the millen-nium. Works for solo piano include suites,multi-movement “poetic echoes,” études,toccatas, and instrumental settings of artsongs and hymns. Mr. Hsiao remarked inhis comments for the recording Memoriesof Home: “For me it is more than a musicalinstrument. Introduced to me by myJapanese-educated mother, it has becomemy guide, my companion for life, my mostbeloved instrument.”

He has credited Rachmaninoff, Bartók andFrédéric Chopin as important influences onhis style, along with Presbyterian hymnodyand, above all, Taiwanese folk music. Mr.Hsiao’s fusion of Taiwanese and interna-tional music traditions has influenced anumber of Taiwanese composers.Enthusiasm for his music runs particularlystrong at institutions where Mr. Hsiao hasserved in the past as a teacher, such as the
