Last actions of our Youth Ambassadors for the European Code against Cancer

No Tobacco Day in SpainTo draw attention to negativehealth effects of tobacco use 31May is observed as No TobaccoDay. Last year YouthAmbassador Ariadna Feliu Josaspent the No Tobacco Day at theCatalan Institute of Oncologywhere a stand was set up in thehall of the main building to raisepatients, relatives andprofessionals awareness of theimportance of quitting smoking and to promote the new European Code againstCancer (ECAC).

Ariadna and her team also celebrated the awardceremony of a drawing contest for kids underthe slogan “Smoke less, walk more”. The prize-

winners were rewarded with a check to buysport products to promote physical activityamong children.

Additionally, the video with 12 ECACmessages was uploaded on website ofthe Tobacco Control Unit and onFacebook and Twitter of the CatalanInstitute of Oncology. Moreover,thanks to Ariadna now video will bescreened on all waiting rooms of thehospital!

Twitter chat about HVP vaccinationOne of the ECACrecommendations suggests usto “take part in vaccinationprogrammes”. To find outmore about thisrecommendation andspecifically HPV vaccines YouthAmbassadors participated in atwitter chat about HPVvaccines. Setting off on 26October, exactly 10:00 ourexpert was ready to answerquestions from both YouthAmbassadors and anyoneinterested in the topic. Do HPV vaccination programmes target only women?When is the best time to vaccinate against HPV? Where can we find the mostreliable information about HPV vaccines online? Those and other questions wereanswered in our twitter chat. #AskHPV

Raising cancer awareness in PolandYouth Ambassador Pawel Koczkodaj keeps spreading ECAC messages duringvarious events in Poland.

During the conference “From genetics to prophylaxis in oncology” on9 December at the Medical University of Warsaw Pawel gave a lecture aboutthe code: “ECAC as an efficient tool in primary cancer prevention”.Moreover, they also discussed a lot about the ECAC recommendations withparticipants during and after conference. During the conference there were alsoworkshops about smoking and smoking cessation. European Cancer Leagues(ECL) was one of the patron of the event. About 100 participants receivedpublication “12 sposobow na zdrowie” (12 ways to health) that Pawel hasdesigned and prepared and other gadgets, for example ECL highlighters.

On 2 February Pawel gave an interview on National Polish Radio about theECAC recommendations.

On  15-16 February, duringthe DKFZ Conference 2018 inHamburg, Germany onPreventive Oncology theposter “ECAC: cancerprevention knowledge andattitudes of Polishpopulation” was presented.

During the week of NaturalSciences at E. Konopczynski’sLXXXIII High School in Warsaw,26 February Pawel gave a lecture “What can we do today to protectourselves against cancer in the future?”

During Warsaw Days of HealthPromotion, 9 March Paweldelivered an opening lecture“Don’t feed the cancer!Healthy diet with referenceto recommendations of the

European Code AgainstCancer”. ECL was one of thepatron of the event and about250 participants received “12sposobow na zdrowie”publication, ECAC leaflets, ECACpens. Pawel also promotedPolish Facebook website aboutthe ECAC.

On 21 April Pawel is planningto give a lecture at I Nationwide Congress of Lifestyle Medicine, MedicalUniversity of Warsaw. The topic will be: “What broccoli has in common withcancer? About healthy lifestyle and diet in context of the European CodeAgainst Cancer”

World Cancer day and other activitiesin BalkansFor the World Cancer Day on4 February Youth AmbassadorMiljana Stojanovska made aresearch project about theCancer caused deaths inthe Balkan countriescompared to othercountries in Europe. Thepurpose of this research was tocompare the number of cancer caused deaths in each Balkan country in order tofind common trends and understand which are the most common causes where isnecessary to raise more attention. Miljana has analysed the incidence andmortality of the 10 most common cancers in Macedonia, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia,Bulgaria, Greece. In men lung cancer incidence and mortality rates were highcompared to other European countries. The prostate and colorectal cancerincidence rapidly has increased in the Balkan countries but without any cleardeclines in mortality. In women breast cancer mortality significantly declined inSlovenia and Greece however cervical cancer incidence rates remained very highin Serbia, Macedonia and Bulgaria. With this data, we can sum up that there areincreasing mortality rates of tobacco-related cancers and screen-detectablecancers. No decline of overall cancer mortality shows how insufficient are thecancer control and prevention in the region. This research was presented byMiljana in the Medical Faculty in Skopje and the Faculty of Medicine in Belgradecomplemented by the ECAC as a guide for prevention of cancer.

Miljana is actively involved inprojects of the MacedonianMedical Students’ Association.The association was invited bythe Macedonian Academy ofSciences and Arts to join theICGEB Workshop of “NextGeneration Diagnostics” on22-24 March. The programmeconsisted of lectures from

experts in the field of genetics. As part of the event there was  a workshop forstudents where Miljana presented the 12 ways to reduce your cancer riskby ECAC.

ECAC on social media in Ukraine duringthe World Cancer dayDuring the World Cancer day on 4 February, our Youth Ambassador OksanaTotovytska was successfully working on disseminating ECAC materials inUkraine through social media. With the help of Oksana video with ECACmessages was shared on Ministry of Health of Ukraine, Ministers of Health UlyanaSuprun’s and “Coalition for smoke-free Ukraine” Facebook accounts. All accountsin total have more than 140 thousand followers that could be reached.Additionally, Oksana introduced code’s messages and Youth Ambassadorprogramme with two blog posts that were shared also on other online media inUkraine – 20 thousand more views!

Youth Ambassador’s video presentingthe European Code against CancerAt the end of 2017 Youth Ambassadors presented their video promotingthe ECAC. The European Union motto says "United in diversity", just as fitting wecould apply this motto to our Youth Ambassador group. Video combines 12 YouthAmbassadors presenting each of 12 ECAC messages in their languages.
