...Your.Daily.Fix.................RepoRt eRRatic dRiveRs, police uRgecbc.ca - Saskatchewan police are urging mo-torists to call 911 when they spot erratic driv-ing — even if they don’t have a licence plate number to report. The request comes on the heels of a crash Friday when an SUV, which was reportedly being driven in a dangerous manner, hit and killed a conservation officer assisting with a traffic barricade set up at an accident site on Highway 11. A 35-year-old man is facing numerous charges in relation to that crash. According to RCMP, two motorists made 911 calls to report an erratic motorist on High-way 11 south of Saskatoon Friday evening.
MotoRiSt SAw eRRAtiC dRiVeRNancy Gardner knows she is one of the callers and spoke to CBC News about what she saw. Gardner said she was driving with her daugh-ter to Saskatoon, from Regina, that night and remembers catching sight of a speeding black SUV in her rear view mirror. it was moving so fast, she said, that it came very close to rear-ending her on the highway before veering to the side and passing her. Gardner also moved to the side of the road to avoid a collision. “we saw him weaving across both lanes,” Gardner recalled. Gardner said the experience was unsettling and she and her daughter were anxious to call authorities about what they saw, but Gardner

thought she needed licence plate information in order to report the driver. As she continued on the highway, Gardner encountered the black SUV again and was able to read its plate. “we grabbed the licence plate number and we called 911 right away,” she said. “we were really shook up.” Further along the highway Gardner then encountered a police barricade and wondered if it was associated with the speeding vehicle she had reported earlier. “we thought, ‘oh thank goodness, they’ve caught him’,” she said. it wasn’t until a few days later, when more information about the crash was available, that Gardner was able to piece together what she saw to get a clearer picture of events. She, too, is urging drivers to call 911 when they see dangers on the road. “we had to do something,” she said of her making the 911 call. “once we had that li-cence plate number we thought, yes, we’ve got information here that someone can use.”RcMp uRge dRiveRs to RepoRt RCMP note that licence plate information is useful — but not required — if members of the public wish to report other drivers. They say a good description of the problem vehicle and details on its direction of travel can be enough for officers. RCMP add reporting drivers could also make note of distinguishing details that are easily spotted, such as: A decal of a stick-figure family affixed to a rear window. A vanity plate or an out-of-province plate.A decal of Calvin and Hobbes or some other cartoon characters. Notable damage, such as a cracked wind-shield. if a truck, some description of the load. Police said it can often be easier to spot a ve-hicle with a few distinguishing features than checking licence plate numbers. They also advise reporting drivers to be careful and make sure a 911 call is placed safe-ly, either by a passenger or after pulling over to the side of the road and stopping. Gardner added she now knows to call 911 as
soon as possible when she encounters danger and urges other drivers to do the same. “You know making those calls to 911 when you may not have all the information or when you don’t know if it’s a legitimate call -— just call,” she said.Spray Foam Insulation

1944: canadians storm Juno Beach on D-Day
They sailed in under cover of darkness to smash down the walls of “Fortress europe.” on June 6, 1944, the Al-lied forces invaded the Normandy coast of Nazi-occu-pied France. The Canadians’ entry point was a stretch of sand code-named Juno Beach. Many would die there but, for the Canadian forces, d-day was a triumph that is still honoured at home and on the beach they called Juno. “The dagger pointed at the heart of Berlin has been driven into the side of Nazi europe.” it’s a dramatic start for CBC newsreader earl Cameron, but this isn’t an everyday war report. d-day has arrived, and British, American and Canadian forces have wrought their full military might on the French coast. By sea, from the air, and across the beaches, the Allies have attacked enemy positions to gain a foothold in europe. As the landing starts, it’s not known which Cana-dian troops are involved, or how many. There’s word beach landings were purely Canadian in some sections, and that Canadians have reached the city of Caen and are fighting there. The report repeats Canadian Gener-al H.d.G. Crerar’s charge to his troops: “As Canadians we inherit military characteristics which were feared by the enemy in the last Great war. They will be still more feared before this war terminates.” Cameron reports that news of the successful inva-sion met with jubilation in Parliament. Members of the House of Commons thumped their desks, clapped, and later sang a round of the French national anthem fol-lowed by God Save the King. The update wraps by para-phrasing the day’s broadcast by King George Vi himself: “This time the challenge was not to fight to survive, but to fight to win the final victory for the good cause.”

The local sheriff was looking for a deputy, so Gomer, who was not exactly the sharpest nail in the bucket, went in to try out for the job. “okay,” the sheriff drawled, “Gomer, what is 1 and 1?”“11” he replied. The sheriff thought to himself, “That’s not what i meant, but he’s right. what two days of the week start with the letter ‘t’?”“today and tomorrow.” The sheriff was again surprised that Gomer supplied a correct answer that he had never thought of himself. “Now Gomer, listen carefully: who killed Abraham Lincoln?” Gomer looked a little surprised himself, then thought really hard for a minute and finally admitted, “i don’t know.” “well, why don’t you go home and work on that one for a while?” So, Gomer wandered over to the barbershop where his pals were waiting to hear the results of the interview. Gomer was exultant. “it went great! First day on the job and i’m already working on a murder case!”

with the summer months upon us, pet trav-el is at it’s height and it’s time for a remind-er about the dangers of leaving your pet in a parked car. whether you’re parking in the shade, just running into the store, or leaving the windows cracked, it is still Not ok to leave your pet in a parked car. The temperature inside a car can skyrocket after just a few minutes. Parking in the shade or leaving the windows cracked does very little to alleviate this pressure cooker. on a warm, sunny day try turning your car off, cracking your windows and sitting there. it will only be a few short minutes before it be-comes unbearable. imagine how your helpless pet will feel. on an 85-degree day, for example, the temperature inside a car with the windows cracked can reach 102 degrees within only ten minutes. After 30 minutes, the temperature will reach 120 degrees. At 110 degrees, pets are in danger of heatstroke. on hot and humid days, the temperature in a car parked in direct sunlight can rise more than 30 degrees per minute, and quickly become lethal. Stanford University School of Medicine conducted a study to measure the temperature rise inside a parked car on sunny days with highs ranging from 72 to 96 degrees F. Their results showed that a car’s interior can heat up by an average of 40 degrees F within an hour, regardless of ambient temperature. Ambient temperature doesn’t matter - it’s whether it’s sunny out. eighty percent of the temperature rise occurred within the first half-hour. even on a relatively cool day, the temperature inside a parked car can quickly spike to life-threaten-ing levels if the sun is out. Further, the researchers noted that much like the sun warms a greenhouse in winter; it also warms a parked car on cool days. in both cases, the sun heats up a mass of air trapped under glass. Precautions such as cracking a window or running the air conditioner prior to parking the car were found to be inadequate. “if more people knew the danger of leav-ing their pets in their parked car, they wouldn’t do it,” states Kim Salerno, tripswithPets.com President & Founder. “Pets are very suscepti-ble to overheating as they are much less effi-cient at cooling themselves than people are” adds Salerno. The solution is simple - leave your pets at home if the place you are going does not allow pets. dogs are designed to conserve heat. Their sweat glands, which exist on their nose and the pads of their feet, are inadequate for cooling during hot days. Panting and drinking water helps cool them, but if they only have hot air to breathe, dogs can suffer brain and organ dam-age after just 15 minutes. Short-nosed breeds, young pets, seniors or pets with weight, respi-ratory, cardiovascular or other health prob-lems are especially susceptible to heat-related stress.
Signs of heat stress include: heavy pant-ing, glazed eyes, a rapid pulse, unsteadiness, a staggering gait, vomiting or a deep red or purple tongue. if a pet becomes overheated, immediately lowering their body temperature is a must. • Move the pet into the shade and apply cool (not cold) water all over their body to gradual-ly lower their temperature. • Apply ice packs or cool towels to the pet’s head, neck and chest only. • Allow the pet to drink small amounts of cool water or lick ice cubes. • Then take the pet to the nearest vet. Animal Services officers or other law en-forcement officers are authorized to remove any animal left in an unattended vehicle that is exhibiting signs of heat stress by using the amount of force necessary to remove the an-imal, and shall not be liable for any damages reasonably related to the removal. The pet owner may be charged with animal cruelty.• Creating greater awareness is the key to pre-venting pets from this unnecessary suffering. tripswithPets.com offers some tips to help spread the word: • A good start is to let friends know about the dangers of leaving their pets in a parked car and remind them to keep their pets at home on warm sunny days if they’ll be going anywhere pets are not allowed.• Get involved. if you see a pet in a parked car during a warm sunny day, go to the nearest store and have the owner paged. enlist the help of a local police officer or security guard or call the local police department or animal control office.
