Success stories: more than 250 references completed worldwide in this century

As energy consumption will continue to increase in the years to come, efficient power generation will be a vital component of reliable, eco-friendly energy systems. When their operating efficiency is boosted, gas-fired power plants will make significant impact in reducing CO2 emis-sions. In the combined cycle process, exhaust heat from the gas turbine is used to generate steam, which then drives a steam turbine, generating additional electricity and increasing efficiency beyond 60 % in our latest-generation plants. Pre-designed modules reduce project lead times and provide an optimal balance between capital cost, plant performance, and plant operations and maintenance.

Leading Innovation

• We delivered the first combined cycle application, with efficiency exceeding a world record-breaking 60 %.

• Thanks to our fast-cycling and rapid start-up system, our combined cycle plants can ramp up to half a Gigawatt (GW) in half an hour per unit.

• Zero liquid discharge concepts minimize the necessary water which helps conserving the environment.

• Siemens owns the BENSON® once-through technology for Heat Recovery Steam Generators, improving both operational flexibility and efficiency.

Sloe Centrale, NetherlandsThe 870 MW combined cycle power plant (CCPP), in commercial opera-tion since 2010, is designed for 250 starts per year. It is capable of supply-ing power to the grid within 28 min-utes thanks to FACY (FAst CYcling) technology and won the Power Magazine Top Plant Award 2010.

• SCC6-2000E series

The E-Class is also often used in simple cycle applications.

The E-Class series, available for four decades and continu-ously improved, for both 50 and 60 Hz, is an extremely well-proven, robust solution for simple and combined cycle processes, optionally including combined heat and power. It is suitable for all load ranges, particularly peak-load operation.

Outstanding fuel flexibility allows a wide variety of low- to high-calorific gaseous fuels to be fired. Even on-line fuel changeover from natural gas to fuel oil and vice versa is possible during operation.

Through its service-friendly design and tailored service concepts, maintenance outages and costs can be kept to a minimum.

Great robustness, fuelflexibility, and main-tainability make the E-Class the workhorse in our portfolio.

Geregu II, NigeriaThe eco-friendly gas-fired power plant started commercial operation in 2013. The 434 MW plant was built as a turn-key project, and is a key contribution to grid stability in the region.

The best way to balance the booming power demand and the need for climate protection is to use energy as efficiently as possible. This answer is as simple as it is ingenious. It is the basic principle of CHP, which is the concurrent generation of power and heat – also known as “cogeneration”. CHP captures heat lost during the production of electricity and converts it into useful thermal energy, e. g. for district heating purposes – maximizing the efficient utilization of fuel. Siemens has an impressive track record of more than 200 CHP plants worldwide based on Siemens components. CHP plants can be config-ured with any of Siemens gas turbines.

• Highest fuel utilization factors

• Optimized cycle design to reduce electricity losses at extraction point to a minimum

• Contribution to the climate target

Puertollano, Spain The combined cycle power plant with integrated gasifi-cation (IGCC) in Puertollano. IGCC technology can make a significant contribution to a safe and very environmen-tally friendly and climate-compatible power supply.

Integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC): Conserving resources and minimizing pollution

Siemens IGCC power plants produce extremely low levels of environ-mental pollution and are capable of cofiring “dirty fuels” such as low-grade coals, refinery residues, wastes and biomass.

IGCC plants can achieve major CO2 reductions by effectively capturing the fuel’s carbon inventory from the syngas, before it is combusted in the gas turbine.

By incorporating Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), a vital technol-ogy often known as pre-combustion carbon capture, IGCC plants successfully meet energy demand in a low-carbon future. Siemens expertise in integrating the processes that prepare gasified fuel for combustion enables us to design optimized IGCC plants that maxi-mize efficiency and reliability while lowering emissions parameters as well as operating and lifecycle cost.

• Low NOx emissions

• CO2 capture

• Ability to use a variety of fuels

Your benefits

Jazan, Saudi Arabia:Siemens supplies the world’s largest IGCC with 4 GW installed capacity.

Repowering: Improve the capacity and efficiency of your existing power plants

• Existing station can continue to operate during construction

• Efficiency increases to competitive levels by reducing the specific fuel consumption

• Enhanced operational flexibility to meet changing market requirements

• Emission levels reduced

• Existing assets are better utilized, extending the operation of existing facilities

The gas turbine, in conjunction with a heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) and a steam turbine, makes CCPPs the most efficient power generation facilities. Existing direct-fired steam power plants can use this advanced cycle concept by adding a gas turbine and a HRSG. This “repowering” approach can make your existing power-generation facility nearly as efficient as a modern CCPP.

Repowering and modernization projects can provide significant eco-nomic benefits. Because each project is unique, investment decisions should be based on an estimate or proof of adequate return on investment and reasonable payback period. Siemens can help you determine the best solution by assessing both the technical feasibility and economic impact of your repowering project.

Simmering, AustriaRepowering Austria’s largest power plant supplies the country’s capital with an extremely flexible operation range integrated into an existing facility.

Your benefits

When a customer or region wants to include both gas-fired generation and solar energy in the power plant portfolio, an integrated solar combined cycle (ISCC) power plant is the optimum choice. By inte-grating a Siemens CCPP with a solar power plant, the ISCC plant offers better economics and flexibility compared to separately built combined cycle and solar power plants.

The BENSON® once-through boiler technology is owned and refined by Siemens with focus on reduced piping, equipment and design complexity. The compact arrangement results in a smaller footprint and faster construction.

Also, the high thermal flexibility up to 20 K/min. and lower stresses reduces start-up times. Last but not least, the operational flexibility, i. e. daily start and stops or load variations of the combined cycle, is ensured by a higher robustness to pressure gradients than for other boiler types. This makes Siemens’ BENSON® boiler technology the optimal solution for ISCC applications.

Integrated solar combined cycle (ISCC) applications: Uniting the benefits of solar and combined cycle plants

• Lower costs as only one joint bottoming steam cycle is needed

• The solar energy is converted to electric power with the high efficiency of a modern large CCPP bottoming steam cycle

• A joint ISCC offers a higher operational flexibility compared to separate installations, even if no molten salt storage system is included

• Depending on the solar field size selected, several operational modes are possible: gas only, hybrid or solar only

ISCC plant configurationsThey can be built in many different variants. Siemens consults with you to configure an ISCC plant to the local conditions and your business strategy.
