Satisfying customersfor more than 50 years

Elec-Tron, Inc. of Wichita, Kansas has growninto the appliance industry’s leading source of elec-trical terminal blocks and terminal boards. Thecompany’s 72 employees celebrated Elec-Tron’s50th year in business in 1996.

Founded as Zimco Metal Products in April1946, the company operated primarily as a con-tract manufacturer, producing miscellaneous metalstampings and assemblies.

In 1954 company founders R. C. Beddow andE. J. (Jim) Beddow elected to change the name ofthe firm to Elec-Tron, Inc., to more accurately re-flect the nature of the products, primarily electricalswitches, wiring harnesses, and terminal boards. The O. A. Sutton Corp., then the leading manufac-turer of room air conditioners, was a steady cus-tomer for many years.

As Elec-Tron’s reputation for quality and timelydelivery grew, the company began serving most ma-jor appliance manufacturers in the U.S. and abroad.

When R. C. Beddow passed away in 1970,Jim Beddow was named President.

Molded terminal blocks joined terminal boardsin 1975. This produced immediate results, so thecompany sold its switch products and focusedsolely on manufacturing connection products.

In January 1988 Jim Beddow retired fromactive day-to-day management of the company.

Rose Ann Rohleder was named President, with Lowell Wiebe continuing as Vice-President incharge of production and sales.

Today Elec-Tron serves every major appli-ance manufacturer.

How can Elec-Tron serve you?

Jim Beddow, grandfatherof the terminal board

Reflecting on his several decades experience,Jim Beddow noted a number of changes in themanufacture of appliances.

While products become more complex, theindustry demands ever-increasing quality. Elec-Tron follows industry trends, such as the move to-ward more solid state components, and respondswith new products.

“One thing is certain. There will always bechanges in this industry. Our challenge is to con-tinue to provide the type of connectors that best fitthese changes,” said Beddow.

Elec-Tron’s job is to provide the right connec-tions to those responsible for manufacturing prod-ucts that are more compact, higher quality, andmore complex.

“Many manufacturers incorporate connectorsinto their prefabricated wiring harness assemblies. These changes, along with increasingly complexelectrical circuitry, require a supplier able to pro-vide the most efficient solutions. Elec-Tron is dedi-cated to being that supplier,” said Beddow.

“Elec-Tron is known in the industry for its cus-tomer service, and we continue that service,” saidBeddow. “Thanks to our production quality, inno-vative technology, and service, Elec-Tron has beennamed an Outstanding Supplier many times.”

Wire Connection MethodsQuick ConnectTerminals

Quick-connect tabs are a one-piece construc-tion, available in both .250” and .188” sizes. Single,double and triple quick-connects are available.

Bifurcatedsoldering terminals

Although most applications for terminalboards and terminal blocks involve quick-connector screw terminals, some require soldered connec-tions. With the introduction of small solid state com-ponents into wiring circuits, the number of solderedconnections has increased dramatically.

Usually, the small resistors, diodes, varistors, and other components are soldered directly to aterminal board or terminal block, which then pro-vides the mounting base and wiring connections tothe solid state components.

Elec-Tron’s unique line of specialized termi-nals combine superior soldering terminals withquick-connect tabs — in a single piece board orblock. All terminals are available as standard com-ponents on all Elec-Tron terminal boards and ter-minal blocks.

The soldering lug portion of Elec-Tron’s ter-minals is unique in that lead wires aren’t insertedthrough small holes and wrapped to obtain properjunction.

Screw terminalsScrew terminals are offered with or without

wire retaining ears. Combinations of quick-connecttabs and screw terminals meet 80% of appliancedesign requirements, at a substantial saving. Morethan a thousand different terminal arrangementsare U.L. component recognized and ready for yourapplication.

The Elec-Tron bifurcated soldering terminalsconsist of a split tab, formed into a fork. The leadwires are simply laid in the open fork, the fork islightly squeezed and ready for soldering.

A particular advantage of this style is its abil-ity to hold two or three lead wires as readily as asingle wire.

An Elec-Tron bifurcated terminal meets or ex-ceeds all U.L. requirements, including the require-ment for mechanical security.

MaterialsTerminal block/board assemblies

The line of Elec-Tron bifurcated terminal com-binations is designed to be mounted anywhere thatthe conventional quick-connect terminals are ap-plied, to terminal boards or terminal blocks.

Most models include anti-rotation ears, per-mitting their application directly to laminated phe-nolic or glass polyester boards.

All models will fit interchangeably onto any ofElec-Tron’s standard molded phenolic terminalblocks, including the ESB1, ESB2 and ET series.

Mounting baseFrequently, a terminal board base may be

extended to include mounting holes and space forthe other electrical components that will be as-sembled later by the appliance manufacturer. Thissimple adaptation may permit the manufacturer tobuild up a complete electrical subassembly, effi-ciently, away from the final production line; it mayprovide a complete service replacement package,or, it may furnish a mounting base that eliminatesthe fabrication and installation of a separate base.

Relays, transformers and circuit breakers arecommon components that may be provided for inthe design of your terminal boards.

Elec-Tron stocks all component parts. Thisprovides control over delivery, price and quality. Thisalso provides flexibility for the designing engineer.

Solid StateComponents

With the advance in solid state technology ininternal circuits, engineers are frequently faced withthe problem of conveniently mounting devices suchas resistors, thermal cutoffs, capacitors, chokes, varistors, and more.

Elec-Tron is well prepared to assist you in thedesign of terminal boards that combine these com-ponents along with your wire junctioning needs.

In addition to supplying terminal boards andterminal blocks that include bifurcated terminals,Elec-Tron is well equipped to furnish complete as-semblies, consisting of the terminal boards/blockswith customer specified solid state componentspreassembled.

Generally, it is economically advantageous topurchase complete assemblies. This reduces thenumber of individual parts that must be ordered andstocked, and Elec-Tron’s specialized facilities andtrained personnel will usually provide additional costreductions.

Through careful preliminary design, it is fre-quently possible to combine several functions ontoa single terminal board, resulting in significant costand space savings, enhancing serviceability, andreducing noise levels.

Your best source for assistance in the devel-opment of such assemblies is Elec-Tron, Inc., whereour engineers have been solving these problemsfor over four decades.

Elec-Tron is your complete source for stan-dard or custom terminal boards.

Whether your need is for a single terminal, multiple terminals, quick-connect terminals, screwterminals or solder lugs, Elec-Tron produces an as-sembly to exactly match your requirements.

By providing an insulator between these con-nections, the field mechanic no longer has accessto your fixed factory wiring. “Wire nuts” are elimi-nated, along with their potential for loose connec-tions.

The field wiring screw terminals are offeredin a vertical or horizontal style, with or without wireretaining ears; the factory wiring is available in 1/4”or 3/16” quick-connect tabs or solder lugs, in dualor single tabs.

As with all Elec-Tron boards, terminal identi-fication may be on the board, and can be printed orsteel stamped.

EPC InterconnectBoards

EPC Printed Circuit Interface terminal boardsprovide a central connection point for all field wir-ing terminations in solid state circuits based onprinted circuit boards.

Field wiring connections are terminated on thefront side of the board, while factory connectionsare made to the back side of the board.

Factory connections are not accessible to thefield installer. The PC connector features two typesof factory terminals, a wave solderable pin tab thatlocks into the PC board and a standard NEMA DC2,.032 X .250 male quick connect tab for wiring con-nections.

Fuse Panels

For the original equipment manufacturer, com-bining components saves in several ways.

By combining on a single board what other-wise would be separate parts, cost of the compo-nent package is reduced, less space is required, and your assembly costs are reduced.

Probably the most common multi-function ter-minal boards consist of combining terminal boardcomponents with one or more fuse holders.

Page 14: “Your Source with the Right Connections” ELEC-TRONelec-troninc.com/eleccat.pdf · “Your Source with the Right Connections ... a terminal board base may be extended to include

14

If your product requires diodes, chokes, ca-pacitors, thermal cutoffs, resistors, rectifiers, fusesor other small components, Elec-Tron is equippedto deliver a complete assembly.

Combining componentsProbably the most common multi-function ter-

minal boards consist of combining terminal boardcomponents with one or more fuse holders. By com-bining on a single board what otherwise would beseparate parts, cost of the component package isreduced, less space is required, and you avoid in-ventorying and assemblying separate components.

Multi-Function Terminal BoardsAlthough terminal boards are generally

thought of as simply a means of junctioning sev-eral wires, more and more engineers are design-ing boards that serve multiple functions, therebyreducing assembly effort, providing more acces-sible servicing, and eliminating noise.

Noise suppressionA most interesting side benefit gained by

mounting certain devices on a terminal board isreduction of undesirable noises. Elec-Tron has as-sisted in the development of several products inwhich “transformer hum” and “relay chatter” havebeen virtually eliminated, simply by moving thesecomponents from sheet metal bases to a terminalboard mounting.

Custom designed blocks, based on laminatedsheet phenolic or glass polyester sheet, are an eco-nomical alternative for requirements not satisfiedusing standard molded bases.

Putting more parts on a single board helpsyou reduce parts ordering and stocking, and canmake connections more accessible for servicing.

Laminated sheet phenolic permits customdesigned boards to fit any need. Elec-Tron’s ex-clusive tooling process will give you this flexibilityfor much less than you would expect, usually forless than $250!

Elec-Tron produces such internal junctionblocks and power terminal blocks to fit nearly anyapplication, including 600 volts and with connec-tors up to 500 MCM.

Elec-Tron’s vast array of standard terminalsand connectors permits construction of customdesigns to fit any special need.

EL and ELDSeries marking

Elec-Tron offers two types of terminal identi-fication marking for applications where terminalsmust be identified to facilitate the wiring.

Marker stripsWhere it is impractical to mark directly onto

the plastic blocks, separate “marker strips” may beused. Strips of 1/32” thick black phenolic laminatemount under the terminal block and extend beyondthe front edge of the block, providing a separatesurface for imprinting numbers and characters inwhite etching-type ink.

Marker strips are printed to your specificationsfrom the drawing you supply.

Block printingThe most economical type of marking is

stamping the characters directly onto the face ofthe molded block. This process uses special rub-ber printing plates and etching-type white ink.

To specify this type of marking, you must pro-vide Elec-Tron with a drawing indicating the exactcharacters and location of the printing on the block.

45

The EK Series has a wide range of applica-tions. For use as a power entrance block, the EKSeries can be supplied with pressure screw con-nectors for up to #4 AWG copper or aluminum con-ductors, or with several styles of binding headscrew wiring terminals, including vertical or hori-zontal format.

A special feature of the EK Series is the widerange of options available in the secondary or loadconnections. These options permit product engi-neers to custom design a terminal block that ex-actly fits each secondary conductor coming into theterminal block.

These load terminals include up to eight quick-connect tabs, binding head screw terminals andpressure screw connectors, as well as combina-tions of these connectors and terminals.

All models come equipped with the terminalidentification “L1” and “L2” molded into the blocks.Additionally, special printing may be supplied asan extra cost option.

The EK Series requires two mounting holesin the mounting panel, but only one fastener. A clear-ance hole for the .188” diameter anti-rotation pinon the block is required, located .547” from themounting hole for the fastener, which may be ascrew or a rivet. A counterbored .191” diameter fas-tener hole is provided.

All EK Series blocks are U.L. and C.S.A. listedfor 300 volts max. and carry a temperature ratingof 150ºC. The amperage rating varies with the typeof terminal connectors supplied.

EJ SeriesPower Block

The EJ Series is a “threaded stud” type powerblock, ideally suited for a power entrance block orinternal junction block for electric ranges, electricclothes dryers and similar applications.

This substantially improved terminal block isavailable at considerable cost savings over con-ventional models.

The EJ Series two and three post stud andnut type power entrance blocks are available withan optional built-in grounding strap.

Three important features have been designedinto the EJ Series of Terminal Blocks.

The blocks are substantially stronger thanconventional stud and nut blocks. Extensive invest-ment in modeling and stress technology have re-sulted in a block that offers a 39% increase in breakand crack resistance.

The optional integral ground strap results inreduced assembly time and lower unit cost.

The blocks cost 19% to 21% less than con-ventional stud and nut blocks.

EJ Series blocks offer a convenient two orthree pole junction point for connection of factorywiring to field installed cordsets.

Factory connection to these blocks is via fac-tory applied ring terminals. These terminals are thensecured with a nut.

Field installation is also via ring terminals.Equipment installers secure a separately purchasedcordset to the screw posts with factory suppliednuts.

EJ Series terminal blocks are U.L. recognizedunder File Number E61937 and C.S.A. certified un-der LR47902 for applications up to 300 Volts, 60amps, and 150ºC.

The EJ Series is completely interchangeablewith other three posted stud and nut terminal blocks.

The TFB series is available in two basic for-mats: with or without fuseholders.

FUSE BLOCK MODELSThe fuseholder models bring a new concept

to the industry, combining a fuse block with a ter-minal block in one component.

TERMINAL BLOCK MODELSThe TFB series is also available as a straight

terminal block, including a wide range of quick-con-nect terminal combinations.

In the combination fuse block-terminal blockconfiguration, the TFB Series is ideal for microwaveovens and other small appliances with internal fus-ing. As a straight terminal block, the TFB seriesoffers an ideal internal junction block for all appli-ance applications.

Most models are available with a choice of.031” X .250” or .020” X .188” male tabs, in plainbrass or tin plated brass. The plated spring bronzefuse clips are sized for 1/4” by 1-1/4” fuses.

Fuse clips with a single quick-connect tab areof one piece construction, and all others are riv-eted directly to the combination quick-connects, notthrough the phenolic block.

Electrical rating: 120 volts, 20 ampsSpecial terminal identification markings are

available as an extra cost option.

ET SeriesLow VoltageTerminal Blocks

The ET Series is a multi-pole, multi-purposeline of terminal blocks with three sizes of standardmolded phenolic bases that may be combined with16 different terminal styles, permitting custom de-signed assemblies at stock prices.

An almost endless variety of combinations ispossible, including quick-connect terminals andcombinations of binding screw and quick-connectterminals.

This series has wide application in circuits ofless than 150 volts, wherever a number of sets ofwires must be junctioned, either for internal wiringor for joining field connections to factory installedwires. The ET Series is ideal as a thermometer con-nection strip in heating and air conditioning equip-ment, or as a general purpose internal junction blockin other appliances.

The ET Series consists of three sizes of stan-dard bases and 16 different terminals. Each pole isdesigned to accommodate up to 8 quick-connecttabs, or 6 quick-connect tabs and a #8 screwteminal. For most models, the cost is considerablyless than a conventional barrier strip or comparablephenolic sheet board.

For Design Engineers, the standard format inthe base leaves designation of the desired termi-nals at each pole as the only engineering consid-eration. Further, being a molded base designedspecifically for this purpose, the ET Series blocksare able to provide superior electrical spacings with-out requiring additional room in the junction box.

For Purchasing, the ET Series offers the mostcost effective product for this purpose. Generally,an equivalent ET Series assembly will cost 10% to20% less than an assembly based on fabricatedphenolic sheet construction.

The ET Series is U.L. listed at 150 volts,150ºC.

The bases are molded of a special high tem-perature electrical grade phenolic compound, U.L.rated at 150ºC. These blocks are carefully engi-neered to provide excellent electrical spacings, while requiring a minimum of area.

The ET Series blocks offer a unique option inthat terminal identification printing can be displayedon the front or the top of the blocks. This meansthat the terminal legends can be positioned for thebest visibility in making the connections.

EG SeriesTerminal Strips

The EG Series feed-thru terminal strips areespecially designed to serve as control circuit junc-tions, and offer you the advantage of completelyisolating factory wiring from field wiring connections.Additionally, feed-thru terminal strips eliminate theneed to feed many factory wires through holes inthe junction box.

These terminal strips are available for anysize, shape or number of terminals you require, providing a single piece unit with a screw plate onone side and a quick-connect or solder terminal onthe other side.

Because the terminal is mounted through amatching shape hole, it cannot rotate or loosenwhen wires are installed. The screw plate featuresan upturned tab to prevent the wire from becomingdisconnected if the screw is loosened.

The quick-connect tabs are designed toNEMA DC-2 standards and are available in .032 X.250 or .020 X .188 sizes.

Terminals are generally mounted throughNEMA grade XPC laminated sheet in 1/16” or5/64” thickness.

ES-43 SeriesFeed-thruterminal strips

These low-cost feed-thru control circuit ter-minal strips offer the features of the ES-36 Series, except with vertical binding screw terminals for fieldconnections and dual .032 x .250 quick connectterminals for factory connection.

Custom DesignsAlthough Elec-Tron offers standard board dies

for these terminals, a sizeable portion of produc-tion involves designs of special terminal arrange-ments to a customer’s specifications.

Due to an exclusive process for tooling theseboards, Elec-Tron is able to provide you with cus-tom designed assemblies at a reasonable cost.

Elec-Tron can provide terminal identificationprinting at a very reasonable cost, on one or bothsides of the board. Printing is done with an ink thatis not affected by water or most chemicals presentin appliances. Elec-Tron also offers die stampedterminal identification. While this is generally lessvisible than ink printing, and the tooling cost is muchgreater, it offers some cost savings on high volumeitems.

ES-101Vertical MountTerminals

ES-101 terminals offer better ways to providescrew connections to your PC boards. The ES-101Series centrally connects all your field wiring ter-minations in solid state circuits based on printedcircuit boards.

All field wiring connections are terminated atthe interface board, including direct connections tothe PC board as well as to remote sensors, con-trols or actuators. No additional sockets or plugsare required.

Screw terminals may be mounted perpendicu-lar to the PC board, thus providing a means of pro-tecting the PC board from field wiring damage.

Elec-Tron EPS Terminal Strips offer an effi-cient, cost-effective means of providing screw typeconnections to printed circuit boards. They are avail-able in two terminal styles, for vertical or horizontalmounting.

EPC Terminal Strips simply plug into your PCboards and are ready for wave soldering.

Let Elec-Tron application engineers demon-strate just how effective EPC Terminal Strips canbe for your products. Each EPC strip is custom de-signed for your individual requirement, includingterminal identification printing to your specifications.

ES-106Horizontal MountTerminals

This family of terminal strips permits an en-tire row of screw terminals to be wave soldered toyour PC boards, at one time.

Dual solder tabs on each terminal yield a solidtermination to the PC board circuitry.

The elevated positioning prevents solder flowto the terminal screws.

EI SeriesSnap-In PanelFasteners

Elec-Tron offers its EI Series feed-thru termi-nal boards with ITW Fastex’s STALOK* snap-inpanel fasteners.

These fasteners dramatically reduce your as-sembly time and cost. Simply snap the terminalboard into your cabinet panel. No tools are required.

These snap-in panel fasteners securely jointerminal boards to your panel. Non-removable fromthe front, they may be removed from the back.

Several size options are available to accom-modate a wide range of panel and board thick-nesses.

These fasteners are ideally suited for thoseapplications where assembly time and costs arecritical.

Our pre-installed fasteners cost far less thanassembly line installed screws or rivets. There areno loose fasteners to inventory and no air-poweredhand tools to maintain and account for. These fas-teners offer simplicity at its finest.

When the fastener is pressed into your panelhole, the prong arm compresses and then snapsback as it passes through. The board and panelare then securely retained between the fastenerhead and shoulder.

ComponentAssemblies

If your product requires diodes, chokes, re-sistors, rectifiers, capacitors, thermal cutoffs, fusesor other small components, Elec-Tron is equippedto deliver a complete assembly.

In addition to being the industry’s leadingsource for appliance terminal boards and terminalblocks, Elec-Tron offers these assemblies completewith secondary components.

Elec-Tron’s facilities and expertise providehighly cost-effective assembly of these componentsby solder, staking or resistance welding.

Our tooling includes many special terminalsdesigned for just this purpose, terminals that pro-vide multiple quick connect tabs and bifurcated sol-dering lugs, usually in a single piece construction.

For most customers, this service yields sub-stantial advantages:

• Reduced inventory of separate components• Single source responsibility• Simplified design• Lower total cost

Multi-FunctionTerminal Boards

More and more appliance engineers are de-signing boards that serve multiple functions, therebyreducing assembly costs, providing more acces-sible servicing, reducing space requirements, andeliminating noise.

On the following pages are just a sampling ofthe boards Elec-Tron application engineers helpeddevelop. Many of these designs substantially re-duced costs and/or solved difficult problems.

As this field is as varied as there are applica-tions, it is not possible to catalog all these develop-ments. We can only seek to demonstrate some ofthe fundamental possibilities through examples.
