had cancer?2 How successful was his fight against cancer?3 What was his biggest achievement after he started

cycling again?

READING POWERGET THE MAIN IDEA

• Read texts quickly to find out what they’re about.• Don’t try to understand every single word.

Lance Armstrong was born

on September 18, 1971. By

the time he was thirteen,

he had already won a local

triathlon, and at the young age of

seventeen he had a booming

career as a cyclist. By 1991 he

was the US National Amateur

Champion, and he participated in

the 1992 Olympic games.

In his first professional race after

the Olympics, he crossed the

finish line in last place, 27

minutes behind the winner. But

in 1993 he won ten titles and

became the youngest road racing

World Champion ever. In 1995,

Lance became the first US

athlete to win the Clásico San

Sebastian, in Spain – the same

race that he had finished last

three years before!

In 1996, Lance was the number

one cyclist in the world. But in

October he felt really bad when

he was riding his bike: tests

revealed advanced testicular

cancer that had spread to his

lungs and his brain. He was

operated on twice and accepted

to undergo an aggressive form of

chemotherapy. Lance overcame

his negative feelings and

resumed training only five

months after his diagnosis. He

also created the Lance

Armstrong Foundation, to help

other people to survive cancer.

In May, 1998, Lance returned to

professional cycling, and had

other reasons to feel happy: he

had recently become engaged to

Kristin Richard, and they got

married that month.

In 1999, he set himself a

personal goal: winning the Tour

de France, the biggest race in

international cycling. No US

team had ever won this

competition! Riding with

intelligence, aggressiveness and

team strategy, he won the race...

six years in a row!

World champion cyclist, twice

Olympian, role model, cancer

survivor, and now six-time

winner of the Tour De France,

Lance Armstrong is one of the

most famous athletes on the

planet. His unbelievable life is an

example for people all over the

world.

After having won the battle against cancer, Lance Armstrong won the Tour de France… six times!

It was one of those days that you neverforget… We had a terrible accident at ourhouse last summer. It was a Saturday. Somefriends were visiting me while my parents wereout and we decided to make lunch. We have abarbecue in our garden with a fireplace and anelectric cooker in it. We also keep swimmingitems there.

First, we made some hamburgers and ate them, and then, we went for a swim in the swimmingpool. After that, we went inside in order tolisten to some music. We were having a greattime when suddenly I heard a strange noisefrom the garden. When I looked out of thewindow I saw the barbecue was on fire! I raninto the garden at once. Because the firewasn’t very big, I managed to put it out withwater from the garden hose.

In the end, we could see how the fire hadstarted. A friend of mine had accidentally putsome towels on the cooker. Since he hadn’tchecked that it was off, the towels began toburn. But it all ended happily.

.Ranulph Fiennes is a modern-day

explorer who loves livingdangerously. Born in 1944, he livedthe first few years of his life in SouthAfrica. When he was 10, he went toschool in England where hisfavourite hobby was climbing ontothe roof of tall buildings at night.

Fiennes later became an explorerand adventurer. He travelled up theWhite Nile in a hovercraft, parachuted onto the world’s highestglacier in Norway, and canoed along4,000 miles of river water in Canadaand Alaska. In 1979 he began theTransglobe Expedition, a journeyaround the world via the North andSouth Poles. In 1982, he and CharlieBurton became the first men to reachboth Poles overland. More recently,

in 2003, he ran seven marathons inseven days on seven differentcontinents – and he did this after aserious heart operation!

Fiennes’ adventures haveinvolved him in some horrificaccidents. On a training course inthe Brunei jungle, he fell down a hillcovered with thorn bushes andstopped only when part of his earcaught on a thorn. He cut the bushin order to get free, but half his earcame away and it started to bleedheavily. Back at camp, a friendoffered to sew the ear back on butFiennes decided to put band-aids onthe ear instead and took a lot ofpenicillin to stop infection. He thencontinued the course as if nothinghad happened!

On another occasion, Fiennes wastrying to get to the North Pole acrossareas of unstable, breaking ice. Hewas some distance from the othermen in the team. Suddenly the icecracked and Fiennes found himselfup to his neck in freezing water. Heshouted for help but no one heardhim. Every time he tried to crawl outonto the ice, he fell back in again. He began to panic. Just when hethought he was going to die hemanaged to pull himself out. He keptwalking until a member of the teamarrived and quickly cut off hisclothes, boots and gloves. Fiennesknew he was lucky to be alive.

As he says, few people go for a swim in the Arctic Ocean andsurvive to tell the tale!
