APPLICATIONS
The distributed antenna system (DAS)is the most popular way to build indoorcoverage network in buildings. It is themost cost effective solution in buildingswith large open spaces and lightseparation walls, because then thepropagation of the antenna signal beamis not disrupted. Examples of structureseasy to cover with point sourceantennas include factory halls, car parkareas, office buildings and receptionhalls in large public buildings.

FIRE PERFORMANCE
Cables for the DAS system are usuallyinstalled in environments where firesafety is essential. NK Cables supplieslow-smoke halogen-free RF cables withflame or fire retardant constructionsfulfilling the requirements listed in tablebelow. In addition, our BHF jacketedRF cables pass the UL 1666 Flame testand can be supplied with a UL Ratingof CATVR.

This system, compared to the DAS,means the distributed antennas andsome of the feeder cables are replacedwith coaxial antennas. Basically, theCAS contains the same components asthe DAS system. Only the coaxialantenna and a 50 Ω termination at theend of the antenna line are additionalcomponents compared to the DAS.
The design of a coaxial antenna systemis well defined. The primary objectivein the design of the coaxial antennasystem is to provide an adequate signal

The coaxial antenna system (CAS) isthe most popular way to build indoorcoverage network in tunnels. Examplesof areas difficult to cover with pointsource antennas include tunnels, mines,subways, metal-hulled ships, nuclearpower plants, trains, airports andspecial applications such as verticalshafts in tall buildings.
APPLICATIONS
CAS SYSTEMat all points in the system. The mostimportant system design factors of thecoaxial antenna are the longitudinalattenuation and the coupling loss of thecoaxial antenna.
To maintain good transmissioncharacteristics, especially with theattenuation, it is very important thatcables are installed at least 100 mm awayfrom walls and ceilings. Special hangershave been developed to guarantee thisrequirement. The slots in the cable donot have to be directed if the cable isinstalled correctly.

CAS cables have the same fireperformance properties as DAS cablesexcept IEC 60332-3C and UL 1666 aremet only with an additional fire barrier
tape between the outer conductor andthe sheath. An exception is RFX 1/2”which meets IEC 60332-3C without thebarrier tape.
The performance of our RFX cables ismeasured through an extensive testprogram. The most important electricalcharacteristics of the coaxial antennas
are the longitudinal attenuation and thecoupling loss. Both characteristics aremeasured along the standardIEC 61196-4 using the free space method.

NK Cables’ coaxial antennas includetwo product families: RFX and RF2Xcables for broadband systems inbuildings and tunnels and RFXT cablesmainly for selected frequencies intunnels. RFX and RF2X cables arecoupled mode cables with a corrugatedand milled outer conductor. RFX cables

have slots in one line on the outerconductor and RF2X have slots in twolines on the outer conductor. A radiatingmode cable RFXT has a slottedoverlapped copper tape as the outerconductor. RFFX and RFEX cables aremore flexible and are excellent choicesfor buildings, trains, etc.

• For feeders and coaxial antennas NKCables offers "one-piece" connectorsthat feature two different solutions each ensuring weatherproof connection: O-ring technology and shrink sleeve.
• O-ring: These connectors employ precision O-rings to provide the primary weatherproof seal for the cable/connector interface.A secondary heat shrink sleeve is recommended in humid installation
In DAS and CAS systems, many kindsof accessories are required. Thecomponents of the indoor system areconnected to each other with cablespecific connectors. Also, one groundingkit per cable line should be used inindoor systems, especially when longcoaxial antenna lines are being installed.During installation, cable specific non-metallic hangers are used.
The transmitted signal is divided intothe branches of the system with powersplitters, taps or directional couplers.The coaxial antenna lines are usuallyterminated with matched terminations.
In applications where exceptionallylong cable runs are installed,bi-directional amplifiers may also beneeded. In addition, multi-frequencycouplers/filters are needed in systemswhere different operating frequenciesare connected to the same coaxialantenna. In the DAS system differentkind of antennas are used. Thesemodules are not dealt with in thiscatalog, as they depend on each indoorcoverage system and are thereforeselected case-by-case. COAXIAL ANTENNA HANGERS
NK Cables offers several types of non-metallic hangers for coaxial antennas.The hanger type and the attachmentmethod depend on the location of theinstallation. NK Cables can supply allcomponents needed for installation,including full instructions. The coaxialantenna hangers are made of plastic toensure proper functioning of the coaxialantenna. However, it is recommendedthat every tenth hanger in a coaxialantenna line is metallic or has a metalliclock to keep the cable securely in placein the event of fire conditions.
In many situations the coaxial antennacould be installed with standard cableties, e.g., when mounting to the cableladder behind a false ceiling. Careshould always be taken so that metallicparts or other cables do not hide the
cable, and the correct distance from thewall or ceiling is maintained.
There are two kinds of non-metallicself-locking hangers that NK Cablesrecommends for the installation ofcoaxial antennas. The first choice is theclic clamp. The clic clamp is therecommended cable hanger in buildinginstallations. Another choice is the racclamp (clamp for radiating cables) whenmore rigid installation is needed. Thisclamp is an ideal cable hanger for placeswhere the cable is affected by airpressure or some other bending forcecaused by a metro or train moving nearthe cable. It is recommended forunderground installation. The racclamp and the clic clamp have manyclamp fixing methods and spacersavailable.

Coaxial antenna with a suspension wire(RFXK-type) needs a special installationhanger. This hanger has a metallic clutchthat is tightened around the suspension
wire. The clutch is then attached to thewall or ceiling. This hanger also hasmany attachment possibilities.

Usually indoor coverage systems shouldcover more than one tunnel, onecorridor or one floor of the building. Toexpand the coverage, splitters, taps ordirectional couplers are used to divideRF-power into various branches, or

combine signals into a common port.For the signal distribution within largerbuildings with many coaxial antennabranches, it is usually necessary todesign an indoor network with similarsignal levels on all floors.

TERMINATIONS
The coaxial antenna line should beterminated with a 50 Ω RF-load in orderto prevent unwanted reflections fromthe open end of the cable. Usually, only2 – 10 watt terminations are requiredbecause the transmitter power level israther low in indoor coverage systems.

The drums are made of planed barklessboards. The standard drum sizes usedfor different cable types are specifiedbelow. Special non-standard drums canbe supplied on request. Alsoimpregnation is available on request.

Handling instructions are attached oneach drum. The reeling direction of thecable is indicated by an arrow. For

transportation and storage the cable isprotected by using wooden (19 mm)lagging nailed on the outer rim of theflanges. Plastic cover is placed on thedrum under the cable and also over theouter layer of the cable beneath thelagging. Cable ends are sealed with ashrinkable plastic tube.
