Beatles business is bigbusiness. The sixties saw thecity selling everything frommoptop wigs at Woolworths toguitar shaped cakes at Sayersas they cashed in on thesuperstar status of Liverpool’ssons. Even Prime Minister TedHeath declared "The Beatleshave boosted our reserves"barely suppressing a heartyYeah, Yeah, Yeah! And by thetime of their Hard Day’s Night

album (1964) they had alreadysold over 10 million Beatlesrecords worldwide.

Liverpool is rightfully apilgrimage for many, whereThe Cavern Club is theirchurch and the hotel of choiceis the ironically named HardDays Night on the doorstep ofMathew Street with itsjuxtaposition of tasteful décorand Fab Four themed interiors. An estimated 826,000 dayvisitors and 110,000 stayingvisitors come to Liverpool eachyear to visit the birthplace ofThe Beatles, spendingapproximately £48million.Beatlemania was one of the key

driving forces behind theregeneration of the city afterthe collapse of its shippingindustry and Toxteth riotsbrought it to its knees. Left ahollow shell of its former selfthe city had to take drasticpositive steps to kick start itseconomy, and with The Beatlesbeing the most successful bandto date it was a short jumpfrom industrial city to touristicattraction. The rise of themedbusinesses, probably beginningwith the reopening of TheCavern in 1991 and theopening of The Beatles Story, brought in a wealth ofinvestment that would lead toits eventual naming as Capitalof Culture 08.

Jon Keats, Events Managerat The Cavern Club, commented: “Prior to takingover the club we were alreadyat the forefront, we wererunning Beatles Week Festivaland Cavern City Tours for 10years. At the same time TheBeatles Story opened up and

we led the way for what hasbecome a huge part of thecity’s economy.”

This month’s John LennonTribute, a two-monthcelebration of everything thepeace campaigner stood for,

will include a host of musicand art events.

The Mersey Partnership’schief executive LorraineRogers commented: “TheBeatles legacy continues togrow and with each passing

The Punk era of Eric’s Club tried to forget The Beatles everexisted only to lose out to a wealth of Beatles themed businessesopening up in Liverpool. Your Move asks how big Beatles business

in Liverpool is and will it just keep growing?

This tribute is the latest in along line of annual eventscelebrating the music and ethos

of the Fab Four from BeatlesDay to the long Beatles Weekrounding it up with theMathew Street festival. It seems The Beatles are still amarketing dream spawning offnumerous by-products witheverything from mugs topaintings. After the opening ofthe first ever Beatles themedhotel Hard Days Night in 2008it seems the dream still hasn’t

lost its steam.Mike Dewey, General

Manager at the Hard DaysNight Hotel, commented: “Wehave traded at between 60 and70 per cent occupancy whichalthough is below ourcompetitor set we do notcompromise the rate as othersare prepared to do and as aconsequence we tend to outperform the market on averagerate and the industry bench

mark. The Beatles has broughtworld wide recognition and Ican't for the life of meunderstand why the city doesnot make more of them.”

Even if Scousers have becomea bit immune to the glory ofPaul, John, Ringo and George, this seems to be acommon belief withpeople working in theindustry – Liverpool

still isn’t fully reaching itspotential when it comes to theFab Four. It may seem likethere are enough themed cafes, bars and tours already but fansare turning to new and excitingways to use beatlemania as abusiness idea. One of the more successful onesis Beatles Business Basics, whooffer motivational Beatles-themed keynote presentations, seminars and training

programmes to organisationssuch as Marks and Spencer.Director John MacCarfraecommented: “We were set up in2000 and now have requests asfar as from the USA and Canadato maximize the potential oforganizations using the story ofThe Beatles who are the mostsuccessful band ever.”Liverpool’s new industry barelyseems to be waning and with the

Xbox/Wii/Playstation release ofThe Beatles: Rock Band which

is an entertaining

interactive lesson in all thingsscouse-rock, it’s hooking a newgeneration. Our top tips for those who wantto set up a Beatles-themedbusiness are: be passionateabout The Beatles, be uniqueand be wary of the legalimplications and abuse of theFab Four’s collection as youdon’t want to be sued by thecorporate arm of McCartneyand Ringo, otherwise known asApple Corps.

The Beatles business mayhave helped bring it back fromthe brink of ghost town but it’swhat Liverpool has done withits economy that helps it growyear on year. Tate Liverpoolattracts nearly a million visitorseach year and is the mostvisited gallery of modern artoutside London, showing alively mix of internationalexhibitions and displays andproduce a wide range of eventsand projects in the Liverpoolcity region.

For the mean time The Beatlesare safe from a Disney-styleextravaganza for as long as thefounding fathers have anythingto do with it the business willalways keep its integrity andpresence in the city.

“I heard about it in the morningnews on the radio. Then I was inrehearsal in Manchester but Iremember going in and everyonebeing in shock. You can’t takethese things in immediately it’s abit like the world trade towersbeing destroyed you can’t take itin for a while. There’s a brilliantscene in the TV film The Ruttles, with George Harrison. All thingsin the film are references to TheBeatles and in the film Lennongoes to Australia and thereporter asks them how do youfeel, and they say “well, shockedand stunned.” Ringo andGeorge later repeated that sameline in an interview after JohnLennon’s death.”

“I was at home when I heardon the breakfast news thatJohn Lennon had been shot. Iwas shocked and saddened bythe news. I had grown uplistening to the Beatles, andJohn Lennon in particular wasa big musical influence for me.I remember thinking howtragic it was that he should bemurdered when he finallyseemed to have found peaceand happiness in his life. WHERE WERE YOU WHENJOHN LENNON DIED?

“I was 14 and although I was aPaul McCartney fan, Iremember very clearly my olderbrother who was a huge fan ofJohn Lennon. I remember howdepressed and distressed hewas, he never went to schoolthat day. I didn’t realise at thetime how significant that daywas, not until years later. Youremember the little things likewe made scones that day. ”

Jon KeatsEvent Manager at The Cavern Club

“The day John Lennon died Iwas 18 and was taking mymum for her first trip toLondon. It was one of thosesuper saver away days thatyou could get in those dayswhen you set off at agodforsaken hour and cameback the same day havingtaken London by storm. Dueto this it meant we had beenon the go from dawn and hadnot heard any news but werestruck on arriving in Londonhow sombre the atmospherewas - every shop we went intowas playing Lennon. A lot of people seem to be doing it nowadays – buying andselling on internet auction sites, eBay being the best known. Andaccording to recent news articles many people are making a lotof money...

Q. My husband, who works shifts for the Post Office, and has quitea lot of free time, is a keen golfer. Last year he began to buywholesale lots of golf equipment like sets of clubs, and clothing, and then sell them individually on eBay and he has become quitesuccessful at this. Somebody has told me that this is taxable, butsurely it is just my husband’s hobby, as he already has a job??

A. There are no hard – and – fast rules to determine whether yourhusband’s eBay activities are taxable. It is necessary to considerthe facts in each individual case, and to take into account thetype, frequency and history of your husband’s transactions, alongwith his intentions when he purchases the goods.

Having said that, based on what you have told me yourhusband’s activities do sound very much like trading. This isbecause he seems to be buying and selling frequently, and ispurchasing items with the motivation of selling them at a profit.

The fact that your husband has a job is not really relevant andit is perfectly possible for someone to be employed and self-employed at the same time.

Q. Is he likely to get into trouble with the HMRC??

A. Your husband should have notified HMRC of his trading activitywithin three months of starting to trade. He will be liable to tax onthe profits of his eBay trading and a penalty for not notifyingHMRC within the three month time limit. In addition he needs tobe aware of the VAT threshold ( currently £70,000 ) as if his annualsales exceed this he will be liable for VAT as well, whether or nothe collected it from his customers.

eBay transactions are not part of the cash economy as sales have tobe made by cheque, postal order or virtual credit card systems like ‘Paypal’ and ‘Escrow’ and a record of all these transaction will exist eitherin your husband’s bank account or his Pay pal account. HMRC is nowusing a variety of techniques to locate regular sellers on auction sites.

Q. So everyone selling things on eBay is going to have to pay tax?

A. Not at all. If you use eBay to sell unwanted personal items(clothes, jewellery, household goods etc) this is very unlikely to betaxable. One-off transactions like these are subject to the capitalgains tax rules for ‘chattels’ and will be exempt if the item has a lifeof less than 50 years or if it is bought and sold for less than £6000.

What’s the layout ofthe house? The ‘Faygate’ is different toother homes as it’s arrangedover three floors. On theground floor there’s an open-plan kitchen/ diner plus aseparate lounge. Upstairsthere are two bedrooms, afamily bathroom and secondlounge, with the masterbedroom and en-suite on thetop floor.

Tell us about the living area?

The main living room on the ground floor isa really good size. It’s well lit with Frenchdoors that lead to the garden helping tobring the outside inside. Supporting localbusinesses is important to us and we boughtsome of our furniture from a shop nearbycalled Cressington Pine.

Tell us aboutthe kitchen?

It’s open plan withthe dining roomcombined with thekitchen. The tallunits and widedrawers are ideal asit means there’splenty of storagespace. It’s the perfectkitchen for us.

What aboutthe bedrooms?

There are three bedrooms – twoon the first floor (one with aJuliet balcony) - and the masterbedroom even includes Frenchdoors to a walk-out balcony. The master bedroom alsoenjoys the benefit of an en-suiteshower, which is really handy. Most of the bedroom furnitureis handmade by Corinne’s dadwho runs his own businessOrmeside Joinery.

And the bathroom? The bathroom is superb as there’s lots of spaceand includes a shower above the bath.

Liverpool is ‘home’ of the Beatles,do you have a favourite Beatle?

We don’t really have a favouritemember of the band but we do likeand respect their music. Theircatalogue of hits like the Help albumis so vast that it’s hard to pick afavourite song.

My dream purchase for the housewould be a 50inch 3D TV.

What would beyour dream buy?

The Sefton Building Company Ltd was based in Aintree in Liverpooland built over 30,000 houses, shops and commercial properties between1932 and 1976. The company, at its peak, employed over 200 Liverpoolbased staff with many additional components for property developmentbuilt at the family’s builder’s merchants or joiners shops Melsons Ltd,also based in Aintree.

The Bleasdale family built the Old Roan Estate in Aintree, Liverpool aswell as other estates in Bromborough, Eastham, Parkgate, Barnston,Litherland, Childwall, West Derby, Aughton, Maghull andBlundellsands. They were also closely involved with a range of NorthWest councils, developing estates in Maghull, Lydiate, Aintree, Halsall,Whiston, Huyton, Prescot, Bootle, Liverpool, Burnley, Accrington,Clitheroe, Lunt Village, Rufford, Darwen and Blackpool.

The Bleasdale family built the Old Roan estate in Aintree, Liverpool. The estate was planned and built in its entirety by the company. It wassome achievement and attracted favourable comment from planningexperts who were impressed by the practical and imaginative design.

Colin demonstrated such tenacity for life that he did not retire andcontinued working until his death. He set a trend for working pastretirement age, continuing his economic endeavours by setting up a businesswith his son, Marcus, in 2001 when he was 75 years of age and established aManaging Agent and Lettings business in 2009, aged 84 years.

As a magistrate on the Ormskirk Bench in Lancashire, between 1970and 1995, he was known and respected as a firm but fair provider ofjustice. His commitment to the judiciary included offeringopportunities to ex-offenders to work within the building companies.

Later in life, Colin married Frances Margaret Martland in 1960, aftermeeting her in Bleasdale Hall, the Conservative Club in Aintree. It wasa meeting of two very special soul-mates, both from Aintree. They had avery happy and loving marriage, creating a family of a daughter, Simoneand three sons, Clive, Marcus and Jason. Frances set a trend for oldermums when she gave birth to Jason at the age of 46. With their familycomplete, Colin and Frances created a happy, loving and fun-filledhome life, based in Aughton. They also had a particular love affair withthe Algarve in Portugal, holidaying there regularly each year, and spentweekends in North Wales with the children.

As a testament to their parenting, all the children settled close byenabling Colin and Frances to enjoy their grandchildren, whoaffectionately called them Nana and Bapa.

It was a rare and special privilege to meet and know Colin. Peoplegenerally describe him as one of life’s great gentlemen who lived withdignity, style, and respect and always had a friendly interest in people –the sort of man they don’t make any more.

Colin created, with his wife, special and lasting stories and memories, with their family being their treasured legacy. Colin also leaves a lastinglegacy in the family business, the Bleasdale Group of Companies whichprovide homes to rent throughout the North West of England, continuing the Bleasdale tradition of quality, affordable homes. Inaddition, the three Aintree shopping centres provide a haven for smalland medium sized businesses, as well as national multiples to prosper inthe town that is the Bleasdales spiritual home.

Colin leaves his sons, daughter, son-in-law, daughters-in-law and eightgrandchildren, a sister and a niece with a legacy of love, treasuredmemories, laughter and family values.

Tell us about the play Lennon. It was the first I did at the EverymanTheatre when I was director there in ‘81and it had only been six months since Johnwas killed so it was intended as a tribute -almost a wake. I knew I wanted it to beperformed by actor musicians so you didn’thave just actors playing and others doingmusic, and it was a massive success. As aresult I went to New York with it whichwas produced by Sid Bernstein, the guywho first took The Beatles to America. Itwas done again in London’s West End in1985 but since then it hasn’t been donebecause the rights of the songs weren’tavailable any more especially after MichaelJackson bought them. They were passed onfrom him before he died but I needed toget in touch with Yoko Ono and get herapproval first.Getting Yoko Ono’s blessing isnotoriously difficult, how did it feel toget her approval?I’m very honoured because I didn’tmeet her the first time round when we didit but then five years ago I was asked togo work on a Broadway show calledLennon which wasn’t mine and as aresult I got to meet Yoko and I was able tomaintain contact with her which wasvery fortunate.

Did you write Lennon in response to hisdeath or was it something already onthe pipelines?I was sitting in a wine bar with KenCampbell, who was the outgoing director, and we were talking about shows I wanted todo which was very much about local subjectsusing popular music. As we were talkingsomebody put on a record of John singing‘Woman’ and I said ‘Oh my goodness, Iwonder if we could do a show about John?’and Ken agreed. My first job was working ina theatre in Stoke called the VictoriaTheatre with Peter Cheeseman who used todo musical documentaries built out ofinterviews with local people so I took a leafout of Peter’s book. I did a lot of interviewswith people around then like Bob Woolerand Allan Williams, and the original scripthad a lot of those interviews in it.How has the play changed since its1986 performance? It’s the same idea but since then there’sbeen so much more information available.Back then there were like three books Icould draw information from and nowthere’s 300 books, I was wondering aroundin the dark. It’s changed more thananything else in terms of events. Forexample I was never very clear whatsparked off John’s and Yoko’s split what hecalled ‘the lost weekend’, which lasted 18months. Meeting Yoko she was able to tellme what happened. She said the straw thatbroke the camel’s back was this partywhere John pulled a woman into a bedroomand all the people at the party could hear

what was going on but couldn’t go in there. All the coats were on the bed so theycouldn’t go home and that was the trigger,so she said to John to go to Los Angelesand I’ll tell you when to come back. However the story still centres around thisextraordinary character Lennon and thisamazing music that he was part of creating– his story is so fascinating you get a story,a bit of history and a good night out.How does it feel to be directing most ofthe shows at the Royal Court? The Royal Court is the most amazing placeto work it’s the kind of the theatre I’ve beenlooking for all my life. The audience is sorefreshing it’s a real cross section of people -Liverpool is unique and the Royal Court isunique within Liverpool. How did you get into directing plays?Turn left at Greenland (laughs) – I did adrama degree in the 60s and decided whileat university that directing looked like agood job and I was very lucky to get this jobas soon as I left with Peter Cheeseman. Thatwas my formative period, and I was givenplays to direct from a young age. What are you now hoping for your future?I’ve got permission to do Lennon inLiverpool for the moment but who knows.I’m also doing the Christmas show ScousePacific which will be great.

Lennon will be playing at the RoyalCourt Theatre from Friday, October 15 toSaturday, November 13. For tickets visitwww.royalcourtliverpool.co.uk or call theBox Office on 0870 787 1866.

It was the year of 1981 and emotions were still running high followingJohn Lennon’s murder. As a tribute, and a wake, the musical Lennon,

which follows him from Woolton church fete to New York was an instantsmash hit. With Lennon finally returning to Liverpool Your Move catchesup with Bob Eaton where he reveals a few juicy titbits of Lennon’s life

and his delight of being the in-house director at the Royal Court Theatre.

I haveinherited what Ithink is a retroarmchair fromthe 1960’s. It hasalways belongedto myGrandmother andwas a favouriteof mine. I havehad it re-coveredin a stonecoloured fabric toco-ordinate with

my own furniture, but am looking for something toenhance its retro feel. I have been looking for cushionson the high street, however, nothing I have seen so far isfun or colourful enough. Do you have any suggestions?

We have recently moved into our new home. The downstairs toilet comprises of a white suitewith white tiles and black border tiles. It looks quite stark at the moment and we were wonderingwhat you could suggest for the walls that wouldadd a touch of glamour and make a functionalroom look a bit more interesting.

Intheir black and white archive collection they haveover fifty iconic images of the 1960’s from whichyou can make your own collection to suit yourpersonal tastes. Why not go for a music icon theme;this month celebrates the 70th Birthday of the ultimate icon, John Lennon. These images combinedwith, for example, Jimi Hendrix and The Rolling Stones would create a eclectic collection.

I would suggest that you look for cushions with strongimagery on them to provide colour and texture to yourarmchair. The Andrew Martin Beatles cushions inyellow have a fantastic tapestry style with the “FabFour” in their iconic Sergeant Pepper outfits. I thinkthe cushion would look fantastic on the style of chairyou have described and would provide nostalgicmemories of a childhood listening and dancing to TheBeatles with your Grandmother.

learnt that not only hadNic, who owns and runsCorke Gallery on Aigburth

Road, shared the samesecondary school as JohnLennon – Quarry Bank – butalso the same stage. Said Nic:‘Before Quarry Bank I went toSt Peter’s primary school inWoolton. And landing apart in the pantomime twoyears on the run meant I got toperform on the same stage asthe Quarrymen.’

Following in the band’sfootsteps, as many a Liverpoolteenage boy has done, Nick hadstints as drummer into histwenties. ‘Looking back, though, I was probably the PeteBest...’ he said, selfdeprecatingly, as wecontemplated the menu. For lunch there are light bites, seasonal specials and barplatters to choose from. The barstill has the unfussy, andsimple vibe it’s always had, butthe food has developed intoexcellent examples of localdishes like Scouse as well asEuropean and Asian meals. We decided to take advice fromour lovely waitress, who wasattentive and helpful

throughout, and settled forthree dishes to share; goat’scheese salad, a tapas platterand a bowl of wedges with dips. Marking the month that wouldhave been John Lennon’s 70thbirthday we talked about himas an artist and an inspiration.Nic talks with passion about artand creating a Liverpool-centric space for talent to grow.Within the city’s Chamber ofCommerce he is chairman ofthe Arts and Culture

Committee, a regularcontributor on RadioMerseyside’s arts show and hasmasterminded a rolling seriesof exhibitions and events to runduring the Biennial. So would he say art was prettyintegral to his life? ‘I certainlyget excited when I come acrossa talented artist living andbreathing their work,’ he said.‘Often they are the ones whoare still living in poverty andworking other jobs to supporttheir art. These are the oneswho really interest me and, ultimately, I’ve got no time forSunday painters. ‘John Lennon was a genius inthat he appeared to be trulyindependent and a driven

spirit. Decisions he made inhis personal life as well as hismusical life often challengedthe norm and upset people. But challenge is whatI think art can – and should –do well. Whilst Imagine hasbecome universally acclaimedas a quaint tune it’s only whenyou listen to the words that youcan hear Lennon beingsubversive.’However, he cites WorkingClass Hero as his favouriteLennon song and feels that itstill epitomises the lives ofmany people in Liverpool. ALennon-inspired show at thegallery will run from December6 – 9 marking the end of thebirthday tributes to him. Untilthen Nic is giving universityand school students the chance

to submit pieces into his finalBiennial exhibition. (Fordetails of how work may beincluded go his website.) In such relaxed surroundingstwo hours flew by as I learntmuch about Liverpool art. Nic flags up a number oflocal artists who are currentlycreating exceptional work andalso highlighted his concernabout the way some projects arefunded in the city. Over coffeehe also conveyed a little of hisfascinating family history (agreat-grandfather who was aleading unionist in the 1920son one side and a dynasty ofwealthy Liverpool builders whodeveloped the Welsh street areaof Edge Lane on the other.) Aswe left the bar I wondered if abook beckons...

“John Lennon was a genius inthat he appeared to be truly

independent and a driven spirit.”

The menu changesregularly and comingup this month will be

the chef’s chickensatay, tomato curry and

From the tapas platter we both agreed thatthe warm chorizo and brie was deliciousand that the wedges had been cooked toperfection. The goat’s cheese was one ofthe creamiest and pungent I have tasted

and blended beautifully with the croutons.
