CHURCH ROAD andZION STREET
Residents of Seal have become increasingly concerned about the number of drivers who are short-cutting the right turn onto the A25 during the morning rush by using Church Road & Zion Street instead. Some are even driving up Zion Street the wrong way!! This rat running is of course a danger to pedestrians and our PCSO has indicated that she will be visiting the site regularly. This is a very narrow street with no pavements and is unsuitable for heavy traffic. It is also difficult to see if it is safe to come out onto the A25 because parked cars block the view. The Parish Council would be interested in what residents feel should be done. One option might be to ban right turns of Zion Street, although judging from experience at the Park Lane/A25 junction many drivers might ignore it. Another option might be to close the southern end of Zion Street except for emergency vehicles. Please let the Parish Council have your view, either by emailing the Parish Clerk, Lorna Talbot, at [email protected] or 01732 763488 or through the Facebook page (search for Seal Parish Council)

SEAL PARISH COUNCILSeptember updateSeal Parish Council meet regularly and strive to take care of our parish and ensure that it is a lovely place to live. Many people do not realise that Seal Parish Council covers more than just Seal village but also Underriver, Bitchet Green and Stone Street St Lawrence.Although we would really like more people to come along to the Parish Council Meetings we understand that in this busy day and age that is not always possible. We are always trying new ways to keep everyone abreast of what is going on. To this effect we have installed two new notice boards in the village. We have a website that that is regularly updated and if you have any local notices you can send in details to be added. We also run a Facebook page where people can keep us up to date on any issues they feel need discussing. Every month I will report back to you via this article what has been discussed at the monthly Parish council and planning meetings. We are currently focusing on a few ‘grot spots’ in Seal village, which we are dealing
with. In the year of the 100th anniversary of the First World War, work is in progress to repair and restore our local war memorials. It’s good to see our recreation ground looking really lovely in this fine weather and the children’s playgrounds both in Seal and Bitchet Green are very popular. Wooden benches around the sports pitches and under the trees have been replaced and the Pavilion is currently being re-decorated inside and out. We continue to support local groups, such as Seal Scout Group and Sevenoaks Volunteer Transport Group and are always willing to consider helping new groups. We are investigating the possibility of installing ‘fitness equipment’ on the recreation ground and would welcome feedback. The addition of flower tubs throughout the village has received a lot of lovely comments and if you have one near you that looks a bit dry, please feel free to water it!!Work has finally been done at the railway bridge on Childsbridge Lane in an effort to improve safety for pedestrians and we continue to investigate other traffic calming measures. Information about Solar panel ‘farms’ and the application for the conversion of Wilderness House can be found on the website and I will keep you up to date with any developments.Don’t forget you can keep check out our website www.sealparishcouncil.org.uk and keep in touch on our Facebook page.

Things you should probably not say out loud
When in a lift at the office which you got on at floor 9 stops at floors 8,7,6,5,4,3,2….and then goes back up to 8, to the lift: ‘WHY did you do that? We all want lunch’. Followed by ‘Did nobody in this (very crowded) lift press the ground floor button?’ To be fair, this did get everyone talking to each other, which makes a bit of a change. When meeting your friend’s boyfriend with your friend: ‘Hi, how are you? Did you know your flies are undone?’ That results in justifying why you noticed (he wasn’t wearing what I expected him to be, so I did the look down - look up thing) and then why you thought to say it out loud (because if it was me about to travel across London not completely dressed, I’d rather know)And finally: When posting a letter in a quiet country road, just keep quiet. Just because there is a tiny path to the post box and a man just walked up it, don’t stop at the end to avoid having to speak / make eye contact / cross on the path at a very close, un-British distance. Definitely don’t stop at the end of the path and start talking to a cat that has come to investigate you saying things like ‘Hello gorgeous, what are you doing

here?’ followed by a few kissing noises. There is a possibility that this will cause the man to freeze on the spot, letter only part way into the post box. When I asked him if he was ok, it turned out he’d not seen the cat and thought I’d been talking to him.One day I’ll learn to engage my brain before I open my mouth. Possibly. Helen

Shipbourne Farmers’ Market : September
We have reached the Kent Food and Drink finals !!A big thank you to all who voted for us in the ‘Kent Life Food and Drinks Awards’. We have reached the final and will be judged (by a mystery shopper) with along with two other markets. These competitions are rather confusing but do help with free publicity !! We had not entered for this particular award before (organized by Kent Life and the Kent Messenger Group) though we have been successful previously in the ‘Best in Kent’ prize organized by Produced in Kent !!Mary Berry to film at the market ?Mary Berry of ‘The Great Bake off’ (and countless more recipe books).may be coming to the market. We have been chosen by the TV production team to determine whether the venue would be suitable for Mary to cook some of her recipes at the market using Farmers Market produce. If the team decides that we will be the location we shall add the date on to our web site (www.kfma/shipbourne.org.uk ). Friends of Shipbouirne Farmers Market will receive an email with details of her visit (to become a Friend go to http://www.kfma.org.uk/reminder.asp?id=32 and complete the Reminder form). What’s available in September The warmth of this year compared to last year has resulted in a speeding up of summer’s long growing season and has now been delivering produce at least one month early. . It’s the time to enjoy an abundance of game, wonderful seafood and here in the Garden of England, all the finest apples and dessert pears for which this area is justly famous. You can still find the end of the summer berries but also the richer hued autumn fruit, such as plums, gages and autumn fruiting raspberries are in abundance.Fish and seafood are plentiful this month. The changing season and the return to
school also herald a longing for richer more comforting meat dishes so make a vow to try game this year, particularly venison. It’s the perfect locally sourced free-range meat – minimum food miles, low in cholesterol and full of useful vitamins. Lean and tender, it suits short cooking methods such as frying and grilling. Ask our game suppliers Keiron for recipes. If watching budgets remember that cheaper cuts of meat such as belly pork, shin of beef and lamb shank all taste particularly good and are all available at Annabells’s stall (our farmer and butcher !). For lighter meat, try guinea fowl. Cook in the same way as a small chicken, maybe roast wrapped in streaky bacon, and enjoy the flavour, which is richer than chicken and subtly gamey. With tomatoes, courgettes, sweetcorn, peas, cauliflowers, runner beans and onions all plentiful and cheap right now this might be the month to try making your own chutneys and pickles. You don’t have to make huge amounts – just a jar or two can be very satisfying and you might just get the bug. Winter squashes and pumpkins are starting to arrive and come in an amazing array of shapes and sizes all with different flavours and textures – try in soups, curries, gratins and risottos. Tree fruit are at their best and juiciest so don’t miss plums, damsons and greengages. They are wonderful for eating and using in preserves, ice creams, pies, and, if feeling very adventurous, even your own liqueurs and wines. (For recipes the Women’s Institute books are excellent.) For more details about the market see www.kfma.org.uk/Shipbourne and we also have a Shipbourne Farmers Market Facebook page ! A Recipe for SeptemberLamb shanks with rosemary, lemon and white wineIf you can’t find lamb shanks this recipe also works with a boned rolled shoulder joint

A farmer goes out to his field one morning only to find all of his cows frozen solid. As far as the eye can see are cows, motionlesslike statues. It had been a bitterly cold night, but he'd never thought anything like this would happen. The realisation of the situation then dawned on him. With his entire livestock gone, how would he make ends meet? How would he feed his wife and kids? How would he pay the mortgage? He sat with his head in his hands, tryingto come to terms with his impending poverty.Just then, an elderly woman walked by, "What's the matter?" asked the old lady. The farmer gestured toward the frozen cows and explained his predicament to the woman.Without hesitation the old woman smiled and began to rub one of the cows noses. After a few seconds the cow began to twitch and was soon back to normal and chewing the cud.One by one, the old woman defrosted the cows until the whole field was full of healthy animals.
The farmer was delighted and asked the woman what she wanted as a repayment for her deed. She declined his offer and walked off across the field.A passer-by who had witnessed the whole thing approached the farmer."You know who that was don't you?" asked the passer-by."No" said the farmer "who?""That was Thora Hird."
