CCHM and You! Preparing you for a

successful homeopathic practice

CCHM’s comprehensive, three year program has graduated hundreds of successful homeopathic practitioners since our inception in 1994. We are Canada’s longest- running homeopathic Medical College, offering students balanced, comprehensive and enjoyable training. Our graduates leave fully prepared for professional practice.

CCHM’s academic standards are second to none. Our homeopathic courses are taught by professional homeopaths with more than 10 years in practice who bring a wealth of experience and expertise into the classroom.

Clinical training is the key to a student’s future success in practice. At CCHM, students undergo rigorous, fully supervised clinical training with both internship and externship components and leave fully prepared and confident in their case taking, analysis and prescribing skills.

Our comprehensive educational formula empowers our graduates. We ground our students in the teachings of Samuel Hahnemann, the founder of homeopathic medicine, as described in his “Organon of the Medical Art‟ and elaborated by classic and contemporary practitioners steeped in the tradition of the old masters of homeopathy. Following this classic foundation in the art and science of homeopathy, students are presented modern ideas and methods so that they are well-versed in all aspects of their chosen profession.

CCHM provides a dynamic, safe and nurturing learning environment where students develop their intuitive, imaginative and reasoning faculties and integrate body, mind and spirit. Our community cultivates holistic approaches to wellness, which include perspectives of soul and spirit, as well as body and ecology. Our emphasis is on providing a thorough, insightful, inspirational education in homeopathy with solid training in anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, physical examination and nutrition.

CCHM is the only Canadian College fully accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Homeopathic Education in North America (ACHENA), the standard of excellence used by homeopathic colleges in the USA. (Members of the Ontario Transitional Council working towards Regulation in the Province attended the recent ACHENA Summit in Toronto to learn more about the US educational standards as we build our standards for Ontario homeopaths.)

As the oldest school of homeopathy in Canada, CCHM has always upheld the highest and most comprehensive standards of training, as evidenced by the success of our hundreds of graduates. In this important time in the history of homeopathy, we proudly support the initiative to regulate the profession in Ontario and prepare our students for success in the future.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is homeopathy?

Homeopathic medicine has been practised worldwide for over 200 years and plays a significant role in the healthcare systems of many countries today. This effective and scientific system of medicine assists the natural tendency of the body to heal itself. It recognizes that all symptoms of ill health are expressions of disharmony within the whole person, and that it is the patient who needs treatment, not the disease.

In 1796 a German doctor, Samuel Hahnemann, discovered a different approach to the cure of the sick which he called homeopathy (from the Greek words homoios + pathos meaning “similar suffering” or “the cure is like the disease‟). Like Hippocrates 2,000 years earlier he realized that there were two ways of treating ill health, the way of opposites and the way of similars.

Take, for example, a case of insomnia. The way of opposites is to treat this by giving a drug to bring on an artificial sleep. This frequently involves the use of large or regular doses of drugs which can sometimes cause side-effects or addiction. The way of similars - the homeopathic way - is to give the patient a minute dose of a substance which in large doses caused sleeplessness in a healthy person. Surprisingly this will enable the patient to sleep naturally. Because of the minute dosage no side- effects or addiction will result.

What do classical homeopaths do?

Homeopaths work with the individual to restore a state of health. They do not diagnose or treat a disease, unlike practitioners of mainstream medicine, they recognize and treat the unique state of each individual's vital energy as expressed in mental, emotional, and physical symptoms and characteristics. The homeopath seeks to remove the ailment by using remedies that stimulate the individual's own inherent ability to heal and thus encourage the body to cure, instead of simply suppressing symptoms.

The classical homeopath selects the single most appropriate remedy in a potency that most closely matches the energy of the illness by investigating the individual’s state of health in a thorough case- taking. They analyze the case by using the symptoms and characteristics that show the uniqueness of the individual with special emphasis placed on a known cause of the sickness or any striking symptoms or themes. After taking the case, a selection of the most similar remedy is determined

3

Page 6: Your journey to learning begins here - Canadian College of ... · Web viewWelcome! We are delighted that you have an interest in homeopathy and in our College, the Canadian College

through differentiation. The medicine that most closely matches the symptoms and the individual is prescribed in a single and minute dose. Only one remedy is ever prescribed at one time.

The patient’s case is followed carefully and any changes that have occurred since taking the prescribed remedy are analyzed. The remedy and its action will be evaluated so that the course of healing can continue until complete healing is achieved.

Beyond this distinction, the classical Hahnemannian homeopath also practices in a coherent way according to the principles of homeopathy as explained in Hahnemann’s Organon of Medicine. A sound methodology and background to achieve effective results in treating the sick. Results will always be reproducible when you use these principles. This science, practiced as Hahnemann described, has great potential to relieve suffering and creating a harmonious life to those who suffer.

“In the healthy condition of man, the spiritual vital force (autocracy), the dynamis that animates the material body (organism), rules with unbounded sway, and retains all the parts of the organism in

admirable, harmonious, vital operation, as regards both sensations and functions, so that our indwelling, reason-gifted mind can freely employ this living, healthy instrument for the higher

purposes of our existence.”

Samuel Hahnemann, The Organon of the Medical Art

How are homeopathy and naturopathy different?

Naturopathy refers to any method of treatment that depends on lifestyle and diet modifications to tackle a particular disease or disorder in the attempt to remove toxicity from the body. Naturopaths study a variety of alternative healing methods, including homeopathy, but receivewhat amounts to a basic training in these modalities. Homeopaths specialize in homeopathic medicine, which is a complete medical system in its own right. A Homeopath will prescribe a similar medicine to treat the root of the disease and ultimately cure the ailment naturally from within outward. Both Homeopathy and Naturopathy are regulated health professions in the province of Ontario.

Where and when do classes take place? (in-class program)The Canadian College of Homeopathic Medicine offers a part time homeopathy program and this means that classes take place on weekends, both Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 5pm. Classes begin in September and January of each year and go into the following May or July. You will attend your classes either at our Yonge and Davisville classroom adjoining the college’s administrative offices,

4

Page 7: Your journey to learning begins here - Canadian College of ... · Web viewWelcome! We are delighted that you have an interest in homeopathy and in our College, the Canadian College

near the Davisville subway station, or at Northrop Frye Hall at The University of Toronto located at 73 Queens Park Circle. This scenic location is conveniently located near the Museum Subway Station.

Our first year program commences in September and then a second and separate session begins in January. These two classes are amalgamated the following September for your second year. In year two and three, you will be attending your clinical internship on selected Fridays from 10am to 7pm. As well, in these years you are required to take on your own clinical externship patients outside of the classroom.

What are the enrolment requirements?

To enrol at CCHM you must fill out our application form and enclose an $85 application fee, along with 2 letters of reference; one personal and one professional. Include a personal life sketch (expanded resume) and an essay on “how you reached your decision to become a homeopath.” We also need your most recent transcript from a post-secondary education institution that you have attended.

Once this is all received an interview with our Dean or Registrar will be set up in person or by phone. Upon satisfactory completion your acceptance letter will be mailed to you.

How are we different from other colleges?

CCHM is the longest running homeopathic school in Canada and has trained more homeopaths than any other school in Canada. We teach the fundamentals of Hahnemannian homeopathy and emphasize the importance of staying true to the guiding principles of Homeopathy.

We are the only independently accredited school in Ontario – accredited by the ACHENA (www.ACHENA.org). All our lecturers of homeopathy have 10+ years of experience and some even have 30+ years.

We pride ourselves on presenting a solid foundation steeped in the tradition of the old masters of homeopathy. It is important to us that our students learn and fully understand the fundamentals as specified in the Organon of Medicine so that what they see and hear in the classroom is fully supported in the classic literature and is consistently reproducible in the clinic. We offer a comprehensive three- year program that has produced hundreds of graduates since our inception in 1994.We are Canada’s longest-running homeopathic medical school. Our longevity speaks to our success in providing the most thorough, relevant and enjoyable training.

What credentials are awarded upon graduating?

Graduates of the Canadian College of Homeopathic Medicine are awarded a diploma in Classical Homeopathy and Health Sciences and are entitled to use the credentials ‘DCHM’ which signifies a Diploma from the College of Homeopathic Medicine.

How are Homeopaths and Homeopathic colleges accredited?

Two significant certifying bodies which are totally independent of any particular schools are the North American Society of Homeopaths (NASH) and the Council for Homeopathic Certification (CHC). These groups set minimum standards for membership, including submission of cured cases, written and oral examinations in homeopathic principles, homeopathic practice and medical sciences. Registered members obtain internationally recognized homeopathic credentials RSHom(NA) and CCH respectively. Medical doctors trained in homeopathy are certified via the American Board of Homeotherapeutics and use the designation D.Ht. Naturopaths who have completed post-graduate training in homeopathy are certified by the Homeopathic Academy of Naturopathic Physicians and use the credential DHANP.

North American accrediting bodies for homeopathic schools: The Accreditation Commission for Homeopathic Education in North America (ACHENA) is the only organization that accredits homeopathic training programs in North America. It took approximately 5 years for CCHM to complete the ACHENA accreditation requirements for our in class programs.

International certifying bodies for homeopathic schools : Internationally, two councils, the European and International Councils for Classical Homeopathy set curriculum guidelines adhered to by the most respected schools worldwide.

Will I be able to get certification from independent homeopathic organizations upon graduation?

CCHM is a recognized homeopathic school and your training will have given you the ingredients to be awarded certification from any outside professional body of homeopaths.

National United Professional Association of Trained Homeopaths (NUPATH): NUPATH is the oldest national professional association for homeopaths in Canada. Founded in 1993, NUPATH was the first organization in Canada to establish a self-regulatory function for homeopathic practitioners. Being a graduate of CCHM will give you all the criteria necessary to gain a membership with NUPATH upon graduation.

Canadian Society of Homeopaths (CSH): CSH is a national professional association and registering body that is entirely independent of any particular school. CSH provides legitimacy and recognition to

our profession and unifies the Canadian homeopathic community as never before. Membership in the CSH Registry confers credentials and credibility on the individual homeopath and assures the public of professional standards of practice and accountability. Graduates of CCHM are eligible for CSH Registry upon graduation.

Can I work while studying?

As mentioned, CCHM offers a part time classical homeopathy program, where classes take place on weekends. In all three years of the program on selected Fridays you will attend your observational clinic hours and internship clinic. This part time schedule leaves many hours for gainful employment during your training.

Can I have a career in homeopathy?

You can have a wonderful, fulfilling career as a homeopath. Whether it is a clinical practice, teaching or research that attracts you, the avenues are endless.

Many homeopaths open their own general practice after graduation. Some work with other alternative practitioners in a complementary clinic.

Is homeopathy regulated in Ontario?

Homeopathy is currently in the final stages of regulation in Ontario, the Act has been passed but not proclaimed. Right now a transitional council has been appointed and the College of Homeopaths has been created as a governing college. This act is targeted for proclamation in mid 2014.

For up to date information about regulation in Ontario visit: www.collegeofhomeopaths.on.ca

Who conducts the consultation of the clinic patient in the internship clinic?

Part of completing your second and third year of this program requires you to observe a master homeopath taking the initial consultations of patients and their follow ups. Your clinical mentor will be conducting all consultations in the internship clinic. These mentors are your teachers and each is a practicing classical homeopath with more than 10 years of clinical experience.

Exemptions can be granted by the Registrar during your enrolment process. Requests for exemptions will be considered by the Registrar after receipt of all your enrolment papers and your interview has been completed.

Further, you may be exempt from any or all health sciences depending on your educational background.

What type of financial assistance do you offer?

Governmental financial assistance (e.g. Ontario Student Assistance Plan, OSAP) for students of homeopathy is not available. As we are in the process of regulation right now, this may change in the years to come.

In the absence of governmental financial assistance, CCHM offers instalment plans to ease the financial burden for students. Some students have obtained loans from their personal financial institutions. Students typically work to support themselves and this is the reason for part-time weekend classes.

Attendance policy (in-class program)

Attendance will be taken (orally and written) during each class and during your clinical internship. You may be marked “absent” for chronic lateness or leaving class early without good reason. Students must inform the lecturer of their intention to leave class, and their reason, before the end of the lecture. 80% attendance is required.

TUITION: Fourth Year Post Graduate Program -‘The Road to Clinical

Mastery’

Clinical mastery is a goal all homeopaths aspire to but many find difficult to achieve. The purpose of this course is to inspire confidence and increase success in the consulting room. It is intended as an extension to, and a deepening of existing clinical skills following classical Hahnemannian principles of homeopathic casetaking, analysis and case management.

In addition to many live clinic sessions, the casework of the old masters is also studied in order that we may glean pearls of wisdom to guide us in our own practices. Hahnemann encouraged us to “imitate me, but imitate me well”. Boenninghausen, Lippe, Hering, Pulford, Nash, Wells, etc. followed this advice and achieved unparalleled success in their time. This sort of success is within our reach as well!

The course is open to all professional homeopaths and naturopaths.

Student & Alumni Testimonials

“I completed my first year studies at another Toronto school and transferred to CCHM for my second year. At CCHM, I now feel that I am getting the grounding that is required to be a good homeopath. I am very pleased that I switched schools. There is a deep knowledge and understanding of Hahnemannian homeopathy and a clear and obvious passion for homeopathy at CCHM. The instructors are able to pass that passion along to the students in a wonderful learning environment. The school is run by seasoned homeopaths and the homeopathy courses are taught by experienced homeopaths, the science is taught by a science professor. For me, this learning environment is much more invigorating and exciting than I, personally, found it to be at the other school where the Dean and many of the instructors are also allopathic medical doctors.”

-Linda T, CCHM Student

I am a student at CCHM. I am in my second year studying homeopathy. The first year I studied at another Toronto based school and then transferred to CCHM. I was unsatisfied with the other school, their lack of professionalism and the way they were teaching us. I felt like all I was being taught was medical traditional science and not a lot of homeopathy. They never linked the two together.

At CCHM they are very professional and someone from their staff is always available to help and answer all your questions and needs. I feel like I have already learned more Homeopathy this year than I did all last year. I have the confidence in taking a case and becoming a reputable Homeopath Practitioner. I am satisfied I made the right choice.

-Christine L, CCHM Student

After my first year of study at another school in Toronto, I realized that there was something missing deep inside. I came to a conclusion; that I did not have enough solid comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the art of casetaking and the Organon, which I consider the “Bible” for safe and solid homeopathic practice. I searched to find a school that would meet my personal and professional needs.

CCHM is an accredited institution that must meet certain educational standards in order to be accredited. This ensures that CCHM provides QUALITY homeopathic education and is dedicated to EXCELLENCE in homeopathic education.

CCHM understands the needs of adult learners, providing a learning environment conducive to adults on a professional level. Lectures at CCHM are taught by experienced homeopaths well-versed in principles of Hahnemannian teachings. CCHM helped me build a strong solid base for my practice by comprehensive studies and reviews of Organon of the Medical Art. CCHM provides a learning environment both at Davisville/Yonge and at the University of Toronto Campus, conducive to learning. Most of all, I feel confident that after graduating from CCHM I will be a safe and skilled homeopathic practitioner, because as with

any medicine, homeopathy can do harm if in the hands of an unskilled medical practitioner.

At CCHM my passion for homeopathy is continuously growing and blooming. I am very confident I made the right choice for me personally.

Monika M, CCHM Student

“Being a future Homeopath and a current student of Homeopathy, it’s challenging to really know which school is ultimately your best choice for training in such a developing field. With the practice of Homeopathy currently undergoing regulation, the administration of many schools will overload a prospective student with a lot of helpful and at the same time confusing information.

I personally started out at one Toronto based institution, only to realize that the standards and promises that were made at the beginning of the academic year were not only dishonored but the school itself lacked great professionalism. I am now a second year student at CCHM having transferred over from the other school I feel like I am finally at home.

CCHM’s staff is extremely professional, the classes are in-depth, highly educational and very thorough. At CCHM I was able to finally understand the meaning of true “Hahnemannian Homeopathy.” The Friday clinic class where students observe a live case being taken is fast equipping me with lifelong case taking skills and patient etiquette. My previous school not only lacked professionalism , but getting through to the Admin was nearly impossible. On top of that certain subjects were taught in such a skewed manner that close to half the class would fail and the teachers would end up bell curving the class. Bell curving would sound almost like a win win situation but it wasn’t, not when as a student I was unable to learn anything from the class.

Here at CCHM there is a feeling of constant nurturing as Joyce and Raymond are always accessible to the students should we have any questions or concerns. CCHM by far also has the most prestigious line up of teaching staff who not only bring years of experience but for the first time in my learning experience, I was able to witness cases that my teachers were successful in treating, through pictures, case files and videos. The teaching syllabus and cases for the most part at CCHM are evidence based! Learning at this school is well developed, organized and at optimal level.

Simply put! Transferring over to CCHM was the best choice I could have possibly made in my Homeopathic Career.”

-Amanda N, CCHM Student

“My decision to attend the Canadian College of Homeopathic Medicine was without doubt one of the best I have ever made. And it was an easy choice, too. I remember reading over all the literature that I received from the various schools and being so taken with CCHM’s approach. I believed it was the intentions behind the school, the values upon which it was founded, and I knew that it was where I needed to go. I never applied anywhere else.

From my very first interview with Raymond Edge, the first day of classes, to our final graduation ceremony, I never lostthe feeling that I in CCHM had found my “home‟. Our lecturers provided a powerful blend of wit and wisdom, and I learned more from them in three years than I ever imagined possible. When challenges both at school and at home arose, help was readily available. Never did I face a closed door. CCHM has managed to combine high-quality education with a personal touch - something many attempt but few achieve.

Homeopathy is a life’s work and a journey unto itself. I am both pleased and proud to have begun my journey in homeopathy at CCHM.”

-Rebecca Liston, DSHomMed

“In the past three years I have spent time with the most incredibly wonderful people whom it was an honour to know...the (teaching) professionals were clearly dedicated...the Canadian College of Homeopathic Medicine is the best that is available to people wanting to study this medicine...”

-Lisa Rice, DSHomMed

“After completing CCHM’s three year Homeopathy program, I realize I will miss the energy and close connections with classmates and instructors gained along the way. I feel now as though I belong to a community with people who share the same beliefs and goals...I am honoured to have been taught by such insightful and bright instructors, people who inspire me to propel myself into the depths of Homeopathy. I believe this program and all its teachings have heightened my awareness to the little nuances of life and all the wonders that it holds. I am grateful for this and all the challenges presented, awakening my senses to seek more information and understanding, building towards my success as a Homeopath.”

-Marla Samuel, DSHomMed

“In my opinion, The Canadian College of Homeopathic Medicine has the finest homeopathic education available in Ontario. The curriculum has prepared me to confidently build an independent practice where I am able to provide complete homeopathic health care for my patients, and to participate with other health care professionals in a clinical setting. In addition, the program provides an academic and clinical platform to continue the process of certification as a classical homeopath.”

-William Ellwood, DSHomMed

“The Canadian College of Homeopathic Medicine has created a challenging and rewarding opportunity to study classical homeopathy.

The School provides its students with an excellent foundation in the theory and practice of homeopathy, knowledge of materia medica, clinical experience, and the necessary background science to begin practice in classical homeopathy. As well as establishing these formal qualifications for effective practice, the School also offers the personal support and guidance through which a lifelong desire to study the art and science of Homeopathy is engendered. I would not hesitate to recommend this school to future homeopathic practitioners.”

- Karen Caverhill, DSHomMed

“CCHM has given me exposure to the ideas and philosophies of many of today’s greatest homeopaths from around the world. Teachers who have studied with homeopaths from Greece, India, England and the U.S.A. and who have practiced successfully on their own for many years have made my learning experience an enjoyable and enriching one. Part of homeopathy’s appeal lies in its ability to change our lives for the better in a dramatic way. Hearing accounts from homeopathic practitioners who have seen this first-hand in everyday life has brought the homeopathic experience to life for me.”

- Karen Jonas, DSHomMed

“The Canadian College of Homeopathic Medicine provides a stimulating, caring, free-thinking environment for the exploration of the majesty and complexity of homeopathic medicine. The teaching faculty have vast experience, but more than that, both their interest in teaching and their ability to communicate are beyond question. The School is operated with integrity, thoughtfulness and dedication. The goal is to produce well-rounded homeopathic practitioners, with strong emphasis on testing and clinical practice...I heartily recommend the Canadian College of Homeopathic Medicine to all serious candidates contemplating a career in homeopathic medicine.”

Specifically, we are required to follow guidelines that also include a site visit by peer reviewers every 2-3 years. ACHENA reviews our curriculum and administration in an on-going manner which also requires us to meet specific educational objectives and outcomes that cover every aspect of running a college, including reviews of budgets/finances, curriculum, lecturers and much more.

At the Canadian College of Homeopathic Medicine, we are proud of all of our efforts to adhere to such rigorous standards because it reflects our commitment to upholding the highest standards in Homeopathic education and it also means we are accountable to our students.

To find out more about our independent accreditation, please visit the Accreditation Commission for Homeopathic Education in North America (ACHENA) at www.achena.org.

The Canadian College of Homeopathic Medicine (CCHM) is a comprehensive, well- designed and well-implemented school of homeopathy. Students completing the course of study at CCHM have every opportunity to become completely competent in the practice of

homeopathy upon graduation. Measurement of competency is regularly implemented from program entry through graduation, ensuring consistency of educational outcomes.

CCHM has made great effort in integrating the curriculum to create a rich atmosphere for learning. The faculty members are top notch with a high level of practical experience and dedication to education. Their variance in style and philosophy is great enough to allow

students to grasp the flexibility of homeopathy, but not so vast as to be disruptive to the educational process.
