Every member of staff has a responsibility to ensure the safety and welfare of students. What is safeguarding? We need to look out for children and adults at risk, who are in danger of being harmed, and take the necessary steps to make them safe. We need to be pro-active and provide the support and information children and adults at risk need to stay safe and healthy. In its broadest sense, safeguarding means making sure that the most vulnerable get the chance to explore what life has to offer. What are we safeguarding against? Any behaviour towards a person that deliberately or unknowingly causes them harm, endangers life or violates their rights. Some examples include: Forced marriage Hate crime Mental health Drugs Missing from education, home or care Female Genital mutilation (FGM) CSE (Child Sexual Exploitation) Faith abuse Gangs and violence Sexting Trafficking To the ideological challenge of terrorism and the threat faced from those who promote it. Vulnerable people from harm at an early non-criminal stage. Students and staff from being drawn into terrorism and ensure that they are given appropriate advice and support. Domestic violence Gender-based violence Prevent/radicalisation Bullying/cyber bullying Safeguarding and Prevent The Prevent duty requires providers and practitioners to exemplify British Values, challenge extremism and prevent radicalisation.
