HIGHER EDUCATION SUCCESSOn average, 500 students each year progress to

university or higher education. In Autumn 2019 (as

of Aug 30th) 54 students were taking up places at

Russell group universities such as Warwick, Cardiff,

Nottingham, Bristol, Birmingham and UCL and many

others were progressing to popular local universities

such as Bristol UWE and Gloucestershire. Degree

subjects studied were as diverse as Robotics,

Criminology, Politics, Medicine, Law, Pharmacy,

Songwriting and Ancient History. Popular subjects

included: Nursing (49 students), Psychology (32

students), Law (21 students) and Engineering-related

subjects (17 students). Five students secured places

to study Medicine or Veterinary Medicine.

Students also stayed on at New College to study

foundation degrees or HNDs in subjects including

Business, Criminology and Early Years.

JOB AND CAREER DESTINATIONSOther students go straight into employment, often linked

to their vocational courses or start Apprenticeships

in their chosen area. In Summer 2019, students joined

industry sectors which included: financial services,

accounting, health care, early years childcare, web

design, retail, fitness and leisure and education.

A LEVEL VALUE ADDED/PROGRESS SCORES New College scores are the highest of any other

state school or college in the Swindon, Royal Wootton

Bassett and Marlborough areas.

These value-added scores tell you how much progress

an A Level student makes between the end of Key

Stage Four (GCSE study) and the end of their A Level

studies. You can compare scores across different

schools and colleges. (Source: Jan 2019 school

performance tables, progress between end of Key Stage

4 and end of A Level study).

SUCCESS AT NEW COLLEGE

04

Page 7: YOUR FUTURE - New College, Swindon · 01 contents useful info reasons to choose new college 02 success at new college 04 ofsted 05 choosing new college over your sixth form 06 great

In November 2017, our OFSTED visit confirmed our status as GOOD.

We have remained consistently “Good” for over 20

years, whilst OFSTED grades at other local colleges

have recently fallen. We believe this means you

can be confident that you will receive a good and

robust quality of education here, which is unlikely to

change from application through to the completion

of your studies.

FROM OUR OFSTED REPORT:

OFSTED

“Teachers have

adapted A-level courses

well in light of new

specifications. Teachers

provide a good

structure for learning

through their own

helpful and insightful

course guides.”

“Safeguarding is

effective. Procedures

to ensure that learners

are safe and feel

safe are thorough,

comprehensive and

robust.”

“Relevant and clear

information about

careers and important

employment skills raises

learners’ awareness of

opportunities available

to them.”

“Learners enjoy and

benefit from very good

classroom resources

and College amenities

such as the gym

and excellent sports

facilities. They enhance

their skills through the

effective use of more

specialist facilities

such as information

communication

technology and

performance and

rehearsal spaces.”

16-18 ACHIEVEMENT RATES In the National Achievement Rates Tables (NART) for

academic year 17/18, our achievement rates were the

highest of all local colleges for both the 16-18 and all-

ages, all qualifications groups.

Achievement rates measure the percentages of

learners who begin a course and successfully pass/

achieve at the end of it, whilst pass rates only

measure the success of the number who take the

exam. High achievement rates mean that a student

has joined a course, enjoyed it, stayed on it and

successfully passed at the end - a great indicator of

a positive learning experience!

A LEVEL PASS RATES98% pass rate100% pass rate in 27 subjects41% grades at A* to B

71% grades at A* to C.

BTEC EXTENDED DIPLOMA PASS RATES: 58% Distinctions.

GCSE PASS RATES326 entries achieved 9 to 4 grades in English and Maths.High percentage of students (above 50%) achieved 9 to 4 grades in 11 out of 20 subjects.

CHOOSING NEW COLLEGE OVER YOUR

SIXTH FORM

1. School is familiar

and teachers know me - will I feel happy in

College?

2. My 6th form

seems to have good A Level

results. What about New College?

3. College is larger than school and

there’s more people. Will I feel

lost?You’ve matured since

age 11 – but the

school environment

won’t have kept pace

and you may well want

to move on from its

constraints. Attending

New College opens up

more opportunities,

allowing you to spread

your wings, gain more

independence, meet new

people and start afresh.

In Summer 2019, our A

Level pass rates were on

a par with, or better than,

most local 6th forms. Our

A Level overall pass rate

was 98%, with over 40%

of grades at A*, A or B -

and we have many more

A Level students and

entries than schools!

Our progress/value

added scores for A Level

were also higher than

any other state school in

Swindon - see page 7 for

details.

New College has one site

so you will soon find your

way around. You’ll meet

new people and take

different classes, but

you will still be able to

meet up with old friends

in our Restaurant and

social spaces.

4. Will class sizes be

too large?

Our average class size

is 16-17 - small enough

for individual teaching,

but large enough to

ensure that class

discussion and group

work - essential parts of

the learning experience

- are most effective.

06

Page 9: YOUR FUTURE - New College, Swindon · 01 contents useful info reasons to choose new college 02 success at new college 04 ofsted 05 choosing new college over your sixth form 06 great

Don’t just assume that you will stay on in your school’s sixth form, even if the school wants you to! You should explore all other post-16 options available to find the place which will offer you the best courses and learning environment for your needs.

New College provides an array of courses/levels that sixth forms cannot offer and our staff will provide the

information, advice and guidance to put you on the right course. We want you to be able to access information

about all available opportunities so you can make the choices that are right for you - we won’t insist you enrol

with us just to hit numbers. We’ve been awarded the matrix accreditation for impartial guidance - if we think

study elsewhere may suit you better, we will say so!

Here are some of the main questions that prospective students ask about the differences between College and 6th form:

5. Why is there a

longer study day at College than

school?

6.My 6th form

offers supervised study sessions - what about New

College?Our timetables allow

teaching up to 5pm; this

is far better preparation

for university or working

life and allows you to

maximise study and

course time.

Studying at College

and university means

that you have to be

motivated and develop

independent research

and study skills. We do

run regular supervised

study sessions and offer

study skills sessions, but

we also offer quiet study

spaces in College to

help you develop these

important skills yourself.

7.Will I receive the same amount of

teaching time that I would have done

in school?

8.Will there be

people to support me if I need it?

Definitely - you will get up

to 150 hours per year per

A Level. Many lecturers

have postgraduate

qualifications and

industry experience and

you will be taught by

someone who has gained

a degree (or an even

higher qualification) in

your subject; and not

by someone with only a

related degree.

As we have more students

(and therefore more

funding), we can provide

a far wider range of

services than school.

You’ll have a Personal

Tutor and access to a

large Student Services

team including nurses,

chaplain, careers advisers

and counsellors. We have

invested in an Additional

Learning Support team

and have a fantastic

reputation for providing

this type of help.

STEM AT NEW COLLEGEWe offer a range of STEM subjects including traditional

A Levels in Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Maths, Further

Maths and Computer Science as well as vocational and

applied courses in ICT, Engineering and Science.

We encourage students not studying Maths A Level to

carry on with Maths beyond 16 by taking the Core Maths

course where possible as an ‘Extraordinary Extra’. Many

of our STEM students complete an Extended Project

Qualification (EPQ), researching a topic of interest

for their project and a high proportion progress to

Russell Group universities. Our Medical Health Pathway

helps students prepare for university applications for

medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine and to sit

the UK Cat and BMAT selection tests.

We have highly qualified tutors and technical staff,

delivering within great STEM facilities. There are nine

well-equipped and modern science labs including two

new Physics Labs. We use sophisticated data-logging

equipment which allows results of experiments to be

displayed on screen in real time, as well as state of the

art equipment such as melting-point apparatus, mass

spectroscopy equipment and colorimeters.

The College prides itself on its digital excellence; we

are a Microsoft Showcase College, using cutting-edge

technology (e.g. virtual-reality equipment) to transform

teaching and learning. We also won a “Creative Learning

Studio” in a national competition run by HP.

Classroom learning is enhanced by trips, field work

and visiting guest speakers. Our able students are

supported to take part in residentials run by Villiers

Park in Cambridge to give then a taste of science

beyond the A Level specification and our Physics

and Biology Olympiad competitors have been very

successful. Previous students have also been involved

in the Sutton Trust summer schools and Nuffield

Research placements, including a research trip to the

Dead Sea. The Able Maths Course introduces topics like

fractals and mandelbrot sets and students take part in

the National Maths Challenge.

With our great courses and facilities, experienced staff

and exciting opportunities, New College offers the

whole package to get you off to a jet-propelled start

to your STEM career path. You can find out more in the

Maths and Science sections.

Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) subjects are vital to the British economy. Studies have shown that students who take these find it easier to get jobs and have a higher earning potential than others.

PREPARING STUDENTS FOR WORKWhether you want to go to university first or travel during a gap year, you will need to get a job eventually. New College is committed to offering the skills and knowledge you need to ensure that you stand out from the crowd and are able to secure your chosen job. That’s why the New College Employability Team are here to help you along the way.

Employers are looking for a range of transferable skills; not just relevant

qualifications. A 7 Point Framework for Employability Skills is highlighted

by the CBI (Confederation of British Industry) and we call these skills the

‘Magnificent 7’. They are represented in classroom and corridor posters

around College as icons on a mobile phone. This helps our teaching staff

to reinforce these skills in lessons, with employability skills being further

developed in College events, work experience, short online qualifications

and enrichment courses.

WORK PLACEMENTS AND EMPLOYER EXPERIENCESAs part of your study programme, you will experience a range of different

opportunities linked to local businesses, employers and entrepreneurship.

Many courses include presentations by local employers relevant to your

course and all vocational courses will involve work experience or a 350

hour industry placement so you can ‘try out’ future career paths. The

Employability Team can provide you with employers to contact for your

work experience or help you find a placement which directly relates to

your course and the career you would like to progress on to.

16-18 JOB CLUBIf you are actively looking for employment whilst taking a course or are

looking to progress into work or an Apprenticeship after leaving College,

you could benefit from attending this drop-in club for a few hours a

week. Get the support of the Careers Team to help you update your CV;

learn to sell your skills professionally; make the vital phone call or write a

successful covering letter. With our dedicated online VLE resources, you

can benefit from support to work on your application at home too.

APPRENTICESHIPS

DANIEL HATHERALL COMMONWEAL SCHOOL

SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT LEVEL 3 APPRENTICESHIP

“For me, an Apprenticeship is the perfect stepping stone

to university. The classroom-based sessions go into a lot of detail and depth and the teaching is great. I plan to

study Software Engineering for Business at UWE once I

complete my Apprenticeship, my aim is to code the future!”

Are you currently employed or know what sort of career you want to enter? Do you want to earn a wage while you learn the job and get qualified? If you can answer ‘yes’ to these questions then an Apprenticeship could be right for you!

If you are not already employed, we can support you in finding an

employer; however from the moment that you decide that you want to do

an Apprenticeship, you should also be actively looking for an employer to

help support your Apprenticeship programme.

WHAT DO I GET WITH AN APPRENTICESHIP?• A technical qualification relevant to your job e.g. a BTEC

• Functional Skills in English, Mathematics and ICT if you have not

achieved the equivalent qualifications

• Occupational competence qualification that you gain ‘on the job’, or a

combined competence and technical qualification

• Knowledge of employee rights and responsibilities

• Personal learning and thinking skills

• Knowledge of the right attitudes, behaviours and skills for your

chosen occupational area

• A chance for career progression right to degree level if it is

appropriate for you

• An income!

Apprenticeships are available through New College at three levels; Level

2 (Intermediate Apprenticeship), Level 3 (Advanced Apprenticeship) and

Level 4/5 (Higher Apprenticeship).

HOW DO I BECOME AN APPRENTICE?Start with a full-time job in your chosen career path (which we can help

you find), with an employer who allows you to be released to spend time

studying. The College will provide an Assessor/Tutor to work with you and

your employer to aid the smooth running of your training and help you

achieve your qualification. You will also attend College for at least half a

day per week. Ideally, you should have five good GCSE grades including

Mathematics and English at grade 4.After finishing their Apprenticeship

97% of our Apprentices remain with the same employer.

T LEVELS ARE COMING TO NEW COLLEGE FROM SEPTEMBER 2021We have been selected as the very first education provider in Swindon and Wiltshire to offer the new Technical Levels or T Levels. These exciting new qualifications are equivalent to three A Levels, last for two years and prepare learners for a skilled career by providing practical skills and knowledge relevant to a chosen profession. They have been developed in conjunction with employers and include an extended industry placement of at least 315 hours (approximately 45 days).

T Levels offer more teaching hours than current technical courses, as well as English, Maths and digital skills.

They will provide the knowledge and experience needed to open the door into skilled employment, further study

or a Higher Apprenticeship. Around 80% of student time will be spent at College with the remaining 20% time

undertaking the industry placement. This differs to an Apprenticeship, which typically involves training 80%

on-the-job and 20% in the classroom or via off the job learning.

From September 2021, New College will be able to offer T Levels in three industry areas - Digital, Education and

Childcare, and Health and Science.

We have a range of course options for 14-16 year olds to study on a part-time basis at New College including Functional Skills, GCSEs or Vocational Qualifications.

The majority of our Pre-16s are Home Educated and undertake a

programme with us in conjunction with their home learning. If you are

Home Educated (i.e. not on roll at a school), then please contact the Pre-

16 team direct as funding is available and we will guide you through the

application process.

We also work in collaboration with local schools; whereby you study both

at school and at New College or the school may choose to fund your full-

time place here at New College studying GCSEs. You must apply through

your school for any of the courses listed in our prospectus using the

special application form available from the Pre-16 Team. Please do not use

the form at the back of this prospectus.

Our 14-16 year old students are able to participate in off-site trips and

activities including an end of year Prom. We also have a part time Pre-16 dog,

HELP WHEN YOU NEED ITYOUR PROGRESS COACHYour Progress Coach should be the first person

you go to for advice on any issues. He or she will

monitor your progress on your courses, keep you up

to date with College matters, cover some important

employability and life skills in group sessions, help

you through the UCAS or job application process, and

provide advice on overcoming any individual barriers

to your success in College.

ENRICHMENT CO-ORDINATORWe like students to get fully involved in College life.

We have great facilities and opportunities to try new

things or follow up your interests with new people. If

you want to get involved, start a student club or have

any suggestions about how to improve student life,

talk to the Enrichment Co-ordinator.

COLLEGE COUNSELLORSCounsellors in College are here to help if you have

any personal problems that affect your learning.

They will listen and support you and the service is

confidential. One-off drop in advice is offered as

well as extended support. In most circumstances,

counselling is limited to six sessions.

COLLEGE NURSESIf you have a medical condition or health concern,

our College nurses offer first aid and health advice

on a variety of health-related topics. They provide

health promotion information, sexual health advice

and referral to outside agencies.

ADDITIONAL SUPPORT - SKILLS DEVELOPMENT CENTREIf you have a physical or sensory impairment, learning

differences such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia,

Autistic Spectrum Condition or any other learning

needs, our Additional Support Team can help you.

We provide services including one-to-one specialist

dyslexia teaching, support in class, computer

programmes and specialist equipment. We work closely

with other services to make sure your needs are met.

It is important to tell us early on if you had special

examination arrangements at school - e.g. use of a

laptop or extra time. We can make similar arrangements

for you but need to have up-to-date evidence, which

may require you to meet with a member of our team.

We have a social curriculum for students with Autistic

Spectrum Conditions which enables ASC learners to have

a greater awareness of their learning difference and

how it affects the social world they live in. It aims to help

ASC students to become more effective contributors

and communicators. Exploring ways to deal with stress

and anxiety are essential in order to establish emotional

resilience for life and the workplace.

You can discuss your needs before you start your

programme - please let us know at your interview. If you

are feeling anxious about moving on from your school

or current placement to College, the Transition Project

can help you make that change. This is run over three

days before GCSE Results Day and you will have the

opportunity to gain an additional qualification, meet

people of like minds, make new friends and get to know

your way around the College.

For more information, contact us at

[email protected].

We want you to feel fully supported during your time at College.

Our Student Services Team, working alongside your Progress Coach, can provide advice on a number of support issues to help you to succeed. Sources of advice include:

BRITISH DYSLEXIA AWARDThe BDA’s Dyslexia Friendly Quality Mark aims to

provide a framework of support and understanding

for schools and other organisations within which

the dyslexic individual can build on existing skills

and develop new ones. This ensures that everyone

within our organisation has a good knowledge of the

needs of the dyslexic individual and that resources

are available to meet such needs. This is likely to lead

to greater levels of achievement and retention for

all learners.

We are the only college in Wiltshire with a Dyslexia

Unit (DU).

SAFEGUARDING TEAMWe care about the safety of our students and

everyone at New College supports our duty to

safeguard and promote the welfare of our students.

If you, as a student here, have any concern about

your wellbeing or safety or the safety of another,

then you should:

• Talk to your Learning Coach, teacher or a trusted

member of staff

• Come to Student Services and ask to speak to

someone from the Safeguarding Team.

CAREERS AND HIGHER EDUCATION ADVICEYour Learning Coach can help you to choose a

career or university course and we offer a range of

activities to support this and help you to develop

transferable skills. The College’s Careers Advisers

can provide extra advice to help you decide your

best route into work or university.

EXAMS AND ASSESSMENTSOur Exams Team will provide you with information

and advice about your exams and other external

assessments along with your subject lecturers.

IMPORTANT - If you are joining New College part-

way through a qualification e.g. you have partially

completed study for A Levels elsewhere, you MUST

see our exams team in your first few weeks. Please

note that linear A Levels cannot be transferred in

the same way that old AS/A Level qualifications can.

CHILDCAREIf you have children, there are funds to help you with

childcare costs while you are studying at College,

depending on your age and circumstances. For more

details, please contact Student Services. You can

receive funds to use any registered child minder

or nursery. ‘Imagine Co-operative Childcare’ is an

independent purpose-built nursery located behind

New College. It is open from 8:00am to 6:00pm, and

offers flexible childcare for children aged 3 months

to school age.

Call 01793 542591 for more information.

OUR CHAPLAINCYOur multi-faith Chaplaincy Team can support you with

information and advice on faith issues and can be

a friendly listening ear at times of personal loss or

difficulty. They have links to local faith communities

in Swindon. We have a sacred space which is open to

those of all faiths and no faith, for prayer or quiet

contemplation.

Our ABC Values are Aspire - Believe - Challenge.

THE ROLE OF PARENTSWe understand just how important parents and

carers are in helping young people make the right

college and course decisions and how confusing the

array of choices can be. You also play a vital role

in the student’s progress and development and we

welcome your co-operation and support in helping

them get through their programme successfully.

We encourage your participation in and support for

College activities - from the early stages of applying,

through to course completion. You are welcome

to attend events such as Open Day and we run a

specific Information Evening for the parents of Year 10

students at the start of the decision-making process.

We’ll keep you up-to-date with progress and produce

termly newsletters, about College events, key dates

and initiatives. Terms 2 & 3 are located on the parent

section of our website. You will also get invitations

to events such as a Parent Consultation Evening and

Higher Education briefing session.

A limited number of students ask us not to contact

parents or carers and to be treated independently. We

promote the advantages of partnership with parents

or carers but respect their wishes if they insist.

OUR PARENT PORTALParents are also encouraged to register for a Parent

Portal account, which allows access to important

information concerning your child including:

• Hand-in dates, marks and grades of all assessed

work throughout the year

• Weekly timetable including rooms and lecturers

• Attendance and punctuality data

• Progress Reviews - twice a year (Dec and Mar), a

report is written by each of your child’s lecturers

commenting on their progress, targets and

current working or predicted grade

• Timetable of examination dates and times.

ATTENDANCEWe monitor students’ attendance in each lesson,

and will give them - and you - regular updates via

the parent portal. If there are any progress issues,

we try to deal with students directly at first, but

if necessary, we won’t hesitate to contact you. In

return, we’d like to encourage you to stay in touch

and to raise any questions at any time.

GETTING INVOLVEDAs well as joining our Partnership of Support, parents

can be involved in many different ways, including

becoming a Governor, giving up their time to run extra-

curricular activities or making donations to assist us

in areas such as the provision of scholarships and

bursaries. If you would like to be more involved please

email us on [email protected].

28

CALLING ALL PARENTS &

CARERS

New College provides students with an inspirational and supportive learning environment. In return, we encourage our students to develop and take responsibility for reaching their own goals. In providing an adult environment, we expect a high standard of behaviour. In their time at New College, students will have developed a host of skills to help them face life’s opportunities and challenges.

Page 31: YOUR FUTURE - New College, Swindon · 01 contents useful info reasons to choose new college 02 success at new college 04 ofsted 05 choosing new college over your sixth form 06 great

We think it’s really important for students to get involved in New College life, enjoy a varied social life and have a say on what matters. There’s several different ways in which you can do this.

GET INVOLVED

29

BECOME A STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE We have reshaped the approach to student

representation this year with a focus on forming

Taskforce Groups for our student representatives.

The diagram below summarises the approach.

Our Taskforce groups undertake a development

project (a ‘mission’) to bring about positive impacts

for students at the College and where possible the

local community and then pitch for funding (£1,000

prize fund) in a local business ‘dragons’ den.

This year, the student reps have formed the following

four groups: Mental Health, Enrichment, Charity &

Fundraising and Environmental.

This current student representative structure is

used to identify New College’s Student Governors.

BECOME AN NC AMBASSADORNC Ambassadors represent the College at a range of

voluntary and paid events. This is a great opportunity

for students to develop a range of skills such as

team working, decision-making and customer service

skills in preparation for Higher Education and future

employment. NC Ambassadors help at open events;

conduct campus tours; give talks at local schools

about New College; organise charity fundraisers and

act as the ‘learner voice’ on College committees.

NC Ambassadors go through an application and

recruitment process. We also provide compulsory

training in Safeguarding and Equality and Diversity.

RAISING AND GIVING MONEYOur students are very proactive when it comes to

fundraising. They raise money during national events

such as Children in Need, Comic Relief and Sport

Relief and at other times during the year. The College

has three official charities, Prospect

Hospice, Wiltshire Air Ambulance and MS

Therapy Centre.

LEARN DURING THEMED EVENTSThese events run throughout

the year and give students

the opportunity to access

information about a range

of initiatives and life skills

from internal and external

organisations over lunchtimes.

Our themed events include:

Volunteering Fayre, Anti-

Bullying Week, Diversity Week

and Health Week.

Enrichment is about providing students with extra opportunities to learn through experience.

Enrichment plays a vital developmental role and helps students to gain soft skills, employability skills and

personal qualities, such as leadership, initiative, perseverance and team spirit. All of these help to prepare

students for adulthood, university and employment.

Enrichment can be experienced as part of your main College programme or pathway (as Extraordinary

Extras), or as additional activities. These sessions are a great way to learn new skills, continue an existing

hobby or passion and to meet new friends.

Please look out for full information about our enrichment programme on the VLE, by visiting the Enrichment Centre or during our Fresher’s Welcome Festival.

EMPLOYABILITYThese activities help students to progress to their

next life stage and apply for university, jobs and

apprenticeships. They develop necessary life skills

such as interpersonal and communication skills,

project and time management, presentation and

negotiation skills as well as IT skills.

Assertiveness & Confidence Building, First Aid, IT Club,

Job Club, Medical Package, Upskill Programme, Work

Experience / Work Shadowing.

COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION Encourages students to work for the benefit of

others and to understand their impact on the world.

They include charity and volunteering work whether

undertaken in College, the local community, nationally

or internationally.

College theme days & events, Freshers’ Festival,

Fundraising for Children in Need, Sport Relief, or local

charities, NCFE L2 Award in Volunteering, Volunteering.

OUR COURSES

A LEVELSWe offer 38 linear A Levels - you will take exams at the end of two

years study. Subjects are clustered into A Level pathways, underpinned

by an employability focus, to help you identify the best subjects for a

particular career/university destination, while still providing plenty of

choice. You follow a specific A Level pathway, taking subjects from

the recommended core and additional choices listed. There may be

the flexibility to choose other options - talk to us at interview. A small

number of vocational courses are included as choices within the A Level

pathways; these are equivalent to one A Level.

Our A Level pathways include wrap around support such as tutorials,

study skills development and pastoral care as well as specific enrichment

choices. Our enrichment initiatives are called “Extraordinary Extras” –

these link to your chosen pathway and help you to develop skills and

qualities to succeed in that destination or career. Further information

on our A Level pathways can be found on page 40 and a separate A

Level Guide is also available on our website or in a print version.

From the moment that you apply to New College, we will work with you to determine the best programme of study for you, building on your prior achievements and your future aspirations. We will ensure a balance between qualifications, enrichment activity, employability initiatives and support for your learning, study time and leisure.

VOCATIONAL COURSESWe offer BTECs and other vocational qualifications across a range

of subject areas at Levels 1, 2 and 3. These fully accredited courses

are designed in conjunction with business, to help you reach your

career goals. They provide a practical, real-world approach to learning

alongside a theoretical background, giving learners the knowledge,

understanding and skills that they need to prepare themselves for both

employment or university.

Each Level 3 vocational course lasts for two years and is the equivalent

of studying 3 A Levels. Studying a full course of this size gives the best

possible chance of progression and all students undertaking a Level

3 vocational course will be expected to study the full qualification.

Further information on our Level 3 vocational courses can be found on

page 44.

GCSE AND LEVEL 2 COURSESIf you are entering New College to study at Level 2, you can either

choose a selection of GCSEs OR Level 2 vocational courses.

Please note that New College offers GCSEs taught across one year,

rather than two. Students entering in Sept 2020 to study GCSEs will

therefore have final examinations in Summer 2021.

FOUNDATION LEARNINGThese are courses at Entry Level/Level 1. Further information can be

found on page 62. Level 1 vocational courses are also listed within each

individual curriculum area (from page 45).

have individual entry requirements - please check course infosheets at

www.newcollege.ac.uk.

VOCATIONAL COURSES AT LEVEL 3 Vocational Courses usually require five 4 (or C) grades. Alternatively,

a Level 2 Vocational qualification in the relevant area is accepted

alongside English Language GCSE at grade 4 (or C) and for some

courses Maths GCSE at grade 4 (or C). Some courses may have other

specific requirements and these can be found on course infosheets at

www.newcollege.ac.uk.

LEVEL 2 PATHWAYSIf you obtained mainly 3 (or D) grades at GCSE, you will be able to

study these alongside your vocational course.

ENTRY LEVEL/LEVEL 1 Vocational Courses are offered in several subjects at Level 1. For

students joining us with 3-1 grades (or E-G) at GCSE or without any

qualifications, our Level 1 courses and Step Up programme are an ideal
