OCTOBER 2015
As the serving President of the SEIU Local 1021 SRJC Chapter, I write to you today on behalf of the over 425 classified staff members at SRJC. There is a sadness for humankind as every day we hear of loss due to fire, guns, rape, and other cruelties. Let us stand with others to comfort during this time of mourning. Let us then choose to go forward and celebrate victories of community, student success, and friendships. As you know we are enjoying a recently ratified contract that gave 3.49% salary increase and an option of five (5) health care benefit options. The goal of parity was achieved and I am still celebrating this huge accomplishment by the SEIU SRJC Chapter Negotiations Team.
There were challenges, and the biggest of those was and will continue to be the cost of health care. Health benefits are among the most costly financial burdens of school districts and other public agencies. This is not just an SRJC problem, this is a societal problem. SEIU Local 1021 is continuing to dig deeper into the reasons why Kaiser premiums for SRJC employees increased over 150% since 2002 (more than five times the inflation rate!) and why Blue Shield and its predecessors have increased their premiums over 250% since 2002.
As a large group purchaser of employee health care benefits in Sonoma County, the District is taking a more active role in ensuring that our premium dollars are spent on safe, effective, efficient, and fairly priced health care services. Doug Roberts sits on the Sonoma County

Labor Management Public Sector Health Care Task Force which was convened by the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors. Around the table he is with other CBO’s across the county and labor leaders in over 10 unions. I believe that employers working alongside employees will greatly influence the unsustainable health care increases which have been keeping our wages flat. See the full roster included in this newsletter.
While SEIU 1021 is involved with several other social and economic justice activities, such as affordable housing and living wages, the SEIU SRJC Chapter is focusing on health care; temporary workers employed in classified jobs on an ongoing basis; and union
membership. There are many ways to get involved: become a member of the CEC (Classified Executive Council) or CAT (Contract Action Team); write a letter of testimony about your STNC experience; convert from a service fee payer to full union member (.49% difference). Unite with us to continue working towards our common goals.
As an integral part of this institution, I am grateful to be a part of the classified staff team at SRJC. We are stronger together.
-Hilleary

As Classified Staff we have an important role
in fulfilling the Mission of our incredible col-

OCTOBER 2015
Eileen Boris is Hull Professor of Feminist Studies and Professor of History, Black Studies, and Global Studies at University of California, Santa Barbara. She is co-author of the book Caring for America: Home Health Care Workers in the Shadow of the Welfare State (Oxford 2012)
“In this sweeping narrative history from the Great Depression of the 1930s to the Great Recession of today, Caring for Amer-ica rethinks both the history of the American welfare state from the perspective of care work and chronicles how home care workers eventually became one of the most vibrant forces in the American labor movement. Eileen Boris and Jennifer Klein demonstrate the ways in which law and social policy made home care a low-waged job that was stigmatized as welfare and relegated to the bottom of the medical hierarchy.”
