From yuletide cinema specials to a massive Christmas Market overhaul, we can promise that this year will be something special!A non-native of Newcastle myself, I travelled from Manchester for university a few years ago and have since found myself unable to stay away for good. I’m not sure whether it’s the ever-friendly Geordie accents perking up my mornings or simply the vibrancy emitted from every corner of the city. Something about this place seems warmer and more welcoming than anywhere else I’ve been to before!With this in mind, I really can’t wait to spend Christmas 2019 here in the Toon - nothing brings a community together more than this time of year and I know I will feel right at home! FLYING THE FLAGThe YMCA celebrates its 175th anniversary in 2019. One hundred years ago this pin was placed on the lapel of a donor to the YMCA ‘Hut Day fund’ during World War I. In 1914, Field Marshall Kitchener launched an appeal for 100,000 more men to join up and the response was dramatic - on a single day 35,000 men enlisted in the army - and existing barracks couldn’t accommodate all of the new volunteers. The YMCA stepped in and within the first fortnight of war, 250 ‘war centres’ were in place.

By 1916 there were 2,000 huts in the UK and abroad. They provided a sanctuary for servicemen, with warm food and tea, a place to read and write letters home, as well as beds for those far from home. Many of the huts hosted programmes of lectures and concerts for the troops. A hut would cost around £350 to build and, to raise the money needed, YMCA volunteers sold flags: the YMCA held a ‘flag day’ in London in early May 1916 where 10,000 sellers gave out 5 million flags.

This fantastic fundraising event invites people to join over 50,000 sleepover attendees worldwide, as they sleep out under the stars to help raise money for those experiencing homelessness and displacement. The event helps 1 million people worldwide, and it's our job to ensure that figure grows year-on-year. All we have to do is snuggle up under the stars at Exhibition Park and do our bit for local and global charities. 50% of donations will go towards supporting people displaced internationally, with the other 50% supporting local organisations.
