This edition of Vision is dedicated to local businesses and doing business.

But before talking business I am delighted that in August it was confirmed that the proposed development for Stephenson Green had been rejected by the Secretary of State. As a Council we believe fundamentally in maintaining and enhancing the character of our district, including its green spaces. We want to see development - but not at any price. Stephenson Green was a step too far and the strength of local feeling against it showed that.

That’s why we took the decision to oppose the plans and to put such a strong and compelling case to the Inquiry. It is gratifying that the Inquiry has listened to and recognised our argument that this development was simply not right for our district.

At North West Leicestershire we are doing all that we can to support business, bring investment and build for the future. One very tangible way we are doing this is through our new Buy Local initiative. As a Council we spend over £15 million a year on goods and services which help to deliver services to you. Now we’re making it easier and simpler for more of that money to be spent through local businesses who sign up to supply us. We’re particularly focusing on smaller businesses with contracts up to £35,000. But there are also great opportunities for bigger companies to get involved in building the prosperity of North West Leicestershire.

As I hope this edition of Vision shows, there’s a lot going on in our district which is helping to boost business, including the work of our own Business Focus team. The team is here to help with advice and information whether you are starting a business or have been running a business for many years. Please give them a call on 01530 454822 or email [email protected].

On 21 August the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government confirmed that there will be no Stephenson Green development on the Green Wedge at Coalville. Well done to everyone who campaigned against these plans.

Eating out? It’s 5 star all the way for more places in North West LeicestershireIf you’re eating out don’t just check out the menu, check out the food hygiene rating as well.

It’s easier to be sure about food hygiene thanks to the national Food Hygiene Rating Scheme. Restaurants, pubs, hotels, (as well as cafes, takeaways and other places that sell or serve food) are now being rated from 0 - 5 on their hygiene standards. The inspections are carried out by local environmental health officers – and in North West Leicestershire the number of top rated places to eat keeps on growing.

Councillor Alison Smith Portfolio Holder for Community Services at North West Leicestershire District Council says,

‘When dining out, you’ll choose to go to a place where you like the food and you know you’ll have a good time. But it also makes sense to look before you book and check out the food hygiene rating as well.

“Over 56% of food businesses in North West Leicestershire have received a 5 star rating following their food hygiene inspection.”

There are 485 5-star rated businesses in total within the district.

If you visit a food establishment and you can’t see the sticker displayed – ask them what rating they have been given, or check out online at www.food.gov.uk/ratings.
