Welcome to the 10th Freedom Festival. We’re delighted you’ve come along to celebrate with us as we continue to explore the legacy of William Wilberforce and what Freedom means to the city of Hull.

This year’s festival is a truly remarkable and bold one, jam packed with extraordinary performance, exhibitions, musicians, poets, dancers, circus, talks, interventions, spectacles, feasts and indescribable moments, which we hope you’ll never forget.

From dance shows in car parks and giant red giraffes playing with opera singers in Queen Victoria Square to kids cutting hair; it’s going to be a Freedom Festival weekend to remember.

We’re also going to talk, we’re going to eat together and we’re going to discuss Freedom like never before. Explore what Freedom means to us now in 2017 and how we as people

can be brave, responsible and connected enough to make positive change happen.

Throughout the festival our Freedom volunteers will be on site ready, willing and more than able to ensure that visitors to the festival get the very best out of their visit.

Equipped with an unrivalled knowledge of the festival, a lot of laughs and a commitment to really showcasing all that Hull has to offer, they are true ambassadors of Freedom Festival and the city.

Whether it’s finding a venue, learning about specific aspects of the programme or engaging in a conversation about Freedom and Hull’s rich heritage, our volunteers will delight in supporting you as you experience Freedom Festival 2017.

16 Freedom Ambassadors along with 120 volunteers will be present on site. So if you see them offer up a smile or stop for a chat. You never know, they may inspire you to become a Freedom Festival Volunteer for 2018 and beyond.

Southpaw Dance Company presents RUSH. In creative partnership with NOVAK and produced by Events International

Dance, Spectacle

A critically-acclaimed, large-scale, mass movement dance spectacular, RUSH features a cast of up to 100 members of the Hull community, Southpaw’s company dancers and stunning projection mapping by Novak.

Inspired by a 21st century phenomenon of mass protest, it’s a celebration of cultural expression and identity, of local lives and daily struggles with community at its heart. Told through three characters, RUSH examines the frustrations that move us to affect change, offering dance, music and the power of protest as a voice to express them - a voice firmly rooted in the cultural identity of Hull.

Robby Graham (Choreographer) has performed, taught and choreographed around the world, including the Royal Opera House, the favelas of Rio De Janeiro and New York. He is Artistic Director of Southpaw Dance Company and was recently Movement Director for Angels in America, National Theatre.

Inspired by Ray Bradbury’s visionary novel Fahrenheit 451, this incendiary outdoor performance recounts the story of a society where books are banned and knowledge is denied.

451 combines immersive sound, dramatic action and pyrotechnics to depict a dystopic society where literature is outlawed and violence is rewarded. Depicting a post-truth world where people turn their backs on knowledge and nothing is what it seems, we could even believe that maybe, just maybe, it isn’t all too far-fetched as we witness an increasing rise in attacks on freedom.

Compagnie Off presents Les Girafes

Street Theatre, Walkabout, Spectacle

The enthusiastic circus director bangs his drum, crashes his cymbals and dreams of his giraffes jumping through circles of flames. His wife, the diva, sings on and on.

A herd of giraffes follows them gracefully through the centre of Hull, occasionally allowing themselves to be momentarily tamed by the audience. But where will it all end?

With a healthy dose of clowning, bangs, live music and theatrical madness, the travelling band unravel a riot of colour and carnival as they pass through our city. A large-scale, fun-filled spectacle for all the family to celebrate our tenth anniversary. Don’t miss it!

A delightful postmodernist promenade performance.

Always on the verge of surreal madness, those cheeky rascals La Collectif G Bistaki are joining Freedom Festival with their wacky voodoo rituals, surreal video projections, passionate tango, gleaming white suits, a ton of corn and fiery fights.

Expect multiple stops around the side streets of The Guildhall as we journey together, before heading back through Queens Gardens for a bolero-inspired finale where ducks may or not get involved, corn will definitely be used and a choir supported by local participants will help to light the way.

A vibrant show about migration and the search for home, wired to the heartbeat of Hull.

The Ragroof Players create street theatre, site-specific shows and participatory dance events, collaborating closely with communities to tell real-life accounts using a multiplicity of languages.

This new version premieres at Freedom Festival as the result of Ragroof Theatre working with Open Doors and HANA to meet migrants to Hull, hearing their stories and using them to inform the creation of new work.

Freedom Festival in partnership with University of Hull present a series of panel discussions, talks and live events during the festival weekend. Word on the Street Spoken Word

The Speak Out venue returns for a second year after its launch last year.

Our Word on the Street programme returns to the Speak Out Tent with another exciting line-up of local and national spoken word artists and lovers of words.

Featuring national headliners such as Zena Edwards, Hollie McNeish, Gevi Carver and Joe Kriss alongside homegrown talent.

To top it all off, local, national and international singer-songwriters, bands, rappers and musical wordsmiths will weave throughout the Speak Out programme throughout the festival weekend, creating a haven of cutting edge, up and coming lyrical talent.

Haircuts by Children is exactly what it says: a group of children are given a crash course in hairdressing and run a salon, offering free haircuts to the public.

An event that will test your courage and faith in the future, surrender your preconceptions (and your scalp!) to the aesthetic choices of these mini-barbers. This is a whimsical piece that plays with the enfranchisement of children and the level of trust we afford them, creating dialogue about power reversals and putting our vanity to the test.

We’re honoured to be working in partnership with The Wilberforce Lecture Trust and Hull City Council to welcome this extraordinary guest to deliver this year’s annual Wilberforce Lecture.

The annual Wilberforce Lecture was established in Hull in the early 1990s in what seemed then - albeit briefly - an optimistic time, with dictatorships collapsing across the globe.

Kofi Annan, the founding chair of the Kofi Annan Foundation, is a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and was the Secretary-General of the United Nations between 1997 and 2006.

What better way for us to celebrate the work of William Wilberforce than by welcoming Mr Kofi Annan to Hull during our tenth Freedom Festival.

Exhibition

The First World War affected women’s lives in unforeseen and dramatic ways.

Fashion & Freedom is a multi-faceted exhibition examining the fashion legacy of WW1. Leading designers including Vivienne Westwood, J. JS Lee and Holly Fulton have created stunning contemporary pieces inspired by the profound changes in women’s dress, accompanied by a series of short original films.

While Having Soup welcomes the public to a free “three course dialogue” experience provoking philosophical conversations and the creation of thousands of poetic portraits around the world!

Artists from Montreal-based collective ATSA alongside local volunteers play the role of Maître d’ on this special restaurant terrace, welcoming the public to savour a confidential conversation over a bowl of soup. The conversation menu is crafted specially for each city the project visits, so participate in feeding the encounter and adding to the conversation.

Folk music plays, food is served, come sit and enjoy the feast.

Suddenly your table is upturned as actors wearing sheep masks play out a protest. Face-to-face with riot police, your seat becomes a barricade. With nowhere to run. You’re part of the protest.

Overhead, big screens play news footage from February 2014 when protestors set up in Kiev’s Maidan Square against a corrupt, pro-Russian president, Viktor Yanukovych. The footage is terrifying, but how does it feel from within the protest?

Emotions are tricked by actions. Adrenalin surges, part of a group, you can’t help but feel committed to the cause. Counting Sheep arms you with knowledge, experience and courage, yet, as the final scenes show, nothing prepares you for war.

This sell-out show from the 2016 Edinburgh Festival Fringe invites you to become part of the revolution.

Freedom Feastival Street Theatre, Food

Freedom Festival Arts Trust, in partnership with Hull Harvest Feastival and Keepmoat Homes, are working together to deliver a gastronomic event like no other.

Throughout the year, a city-wide growing project has taken place across established and newly-created allotments, farms and gardens, growing an abundance of vegetables to be harvested for this event. Volunteers will grow, cook and share their food at a ceremonious feast as part of this year’s 10th anniversary celebrations.

Free tickets will be released for Freedom Feastival over the coming weeks, so watch this space! Alternatively, join as a volunteer or simply turn up on the day and celebrate our Hull community with a home-grown theatrical taste sensation.

Enter a magical world of balance where a playful picture is painted on the skies. Equilibrius takes the thrills of the timeless art of high-wire walking, giving it a mesmerising narrative for the modern world – eight metres up in the air.

Before the shows, come and immerse yourself in the Bullzini world of wire-walking. Find out more about famous wirewalkers and even try your hand at this traditional circus skill.

The Bullzini have performed with companies such as The Insect Circus and Arcadia Spectacular as well as collaborations with festivals such as Glastonbury, where the Bullzini show headlined the circus field.

The Trip This crazy Catalan sideshow invites the spectator to a once-in-a-lifetime experience on a surreal trip, a trip which takes them to...well, who knows?

La Inedita base their sound on the original ‘chicha’ sound that sprang out of the Pervian Amazonas in the 70s, fusing cumbria, Brazillian sounds and surf music. Now they’re adding hip-hop, ragamuffin and dancehall to the mix, renaming it ‘chichamuffin’.

The Footbath Terrace Relax in one of the ten designer wheelbarrow loungers, let the mobile kettle cart run you a warm footbath and who knows, you might even be treated to a deserving foot rub by one of the accompanying ‘charmers’.

Hull’s very own Pearl’s Cab Ride’s vibe-y sound is written and performed with tangible passion, never straying far from their funk and soul roots.

Beyond Words returns for a final exhibition, with the full collection that we have worked with Book Works to curate and commission over the past 18 months.

Under the musical direction of Brazil’s Laima Leyton AKA Mixhell/Soulwax, this bespoke electronic collaboration fuses sounds of hip hop, dancehall, reggae, techno, soul and electronica.

This final exhibition shows the commissions all in one place for the first time, celebrating the release of the final publication by artist Ruth Ewan.

GRRRL is a collective of rebellious, independent, underground, revolutionary women from areas of conflict who are promoting peace, fighting injustice and creating change through their music.

Influenced by jazz, gospel and traditional material this is a rare opportunity to hear the contemporary sounds of South Africa. The Warren Youth Project/Warren Records presents 3 Minute Heroes

Music

Three Minute Heroes supports young people to use creativity to facilitate safe and open discussion about their thoughts and feelings.

Bands and musicians have recorded an album of songs, with lyrics written by young people from local schools. Some of these will be performed as part of Freedom Festival, alongside full performances from the artists themselves. This skilful Hull rapper, fresh from

the BBC Radio 1 Big Weekend, gives a candid perspective of what it’s like being a black child growing up in North Hull and the values instilled in him that have helped him find his place in the world.

Freetown Mix Music

Lansford Penn-Timity and Cecil Jones met at an African-style Christmas lunch in 2011. After the food, they borrowed a dusty guitar and started entertaining…and since then, they’ve played some of the biggest stages in the city.

One of Hull’s most prestigious bands, Freetown Mix play all types of African traditional music and modern contemporary dance song.

Giving the future talents of Hull the chance to record their own music with the portable studio, (hip) hop on – you never know, you might surprise yourself.

The aim of the Beats Bus is to encourage the city’s next generation to speak out about their hopes, their aspirations and to see the opportunities they have for their future.
