The law is that body of rules and regulations which people are expected to obey in order to help solve problems arising from human contact.
Laws are accepted and enforced by the State on behalf of all citizens.
Laws have legal consequences if broken.

Effective laws However, in order for laws to be effective in practice
they must exhibit these characteristics:
- be accepted by the community
- be clear
- be consistent
- be enforceable

Major sources of Australian Law State Laws and statutes
- legislation passed by State/Federal parliament
Common Law- judges have the power to interpret the law and make decisions on a particular point of view- precedents set in court
By-laws and statutory regulations- local councils can make by-laws (local rules)- statutory authorities can make binding regulations
The Constitution- set down powers of Federal and State governments- established the High Court- outlined procedures for changing the Constitution
