MARCH 26, 2019 · THE CHAPEL BELL 1 Prayer is a daring activity. Its risky. You never know exactly what youll get out of it. Sometimes it works the way you want it to, and sometimes it doesnt. Thats why some people dont believe in it. Now the truth is that you and I dont believe in prayer either. Prayer is a form of conversation, not the subject of our belief. We believe in God, not in prayer. We confess faith in Jesus Christ, not in a form of communication. To believe in prayer, would make prayer a power to be harnessed by the user, and that would make prayer an idolatrous god. Too often, we do this very thing, put our faith in prayer as if it were God. Prayer is conversation; it is our talking and listening to God, and every conversation with another involves an element of risk. Thats because two persons are never automatically or completely of the same mind. When we pray, we accept the risk that God may disagree with us. If our prayer is genuine conversation, we not only expect a response, but we also accept the risk that the answer we get may be quite different from what we wanted or expected. After all, Gods ways are not our ways. God is not necessarily of the same mind as us. Is prayer worth the risk then? Yes, but only because of faith in God. The only basis for prayer is faith: faith in God who through Christ promised to save us; faith in God who promises to abide with us through thick and thin; and faith in God who pledges that victory is assured. If we put our faith in prayer, we will get nervous. But those who put their faith in God and trust Gods Word, pray with a certain boldness, with a certain daring that comes from taking God at his word and trusting him. Daring to pray despite the inherent risk, is an act of faith that comes naturally to Christians. Only in faith, do we realize fully that it is Gods will, not ours, that is being done. And if in faith and love we pray, not my will, but thine be done,God gives us strength sufficient for accepting his answer, be it yes, or no, or whatever. We pray because we believe, and because we trust that God listens. Daring to pray proves the strength and depth of our faith, and helps our faith grow and mature. So dont believe in prayer itself, but believe in the God of our Lord Jesus Christ. Trust God to love you. Then despite the risk of prayer, pray boldly, trusting Gods will. Pray daring prayers, and God will reward you with a life of hope and service, of inner joy, and lasting peace. Faithfully yours, LADUE CHAPEL PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH (USA) · ST.
