52 — Centralian Advocate, Friday, February 28, 2014 52 SPORT FRIDAY FEBRUARY 28 2014 CAVE01Z01MA - V0 Young Cats expected to mark territory in Alice GEELONG defender Tom Lonergan feels there’s a healthy competition for spots heading into Round 1 of the home-and-away season next month after several off-season departures. Lonergan said tonight’s NAB Challenge match in Alice Springs was a time for the next generation of Cats to step up after the club lost players with experience of nine premier- ships and more than 800 games. Midfielder Joel Corey re- tired at the end of 2013 after 276 games and three flags, while veteran trio Paul Chap- man (251 games, three prem- ierships), Josh Hunt (198 and two) and James Podsiadly (83 and one) weren’t given con- tract extensions. Add to that the long-term knee injuries of Nathan Vardy and Daniel Menzel, and there’s plenty of opportunities for the youngsters to step up. “Obviously we had a few senior guys exit the club last year,” he said. “There will be positions up for grabs, it’s just a matter of the younger guys showing a bit of form and making sure they try to cement themselves into the team.” Lonergan said first-gamers Jake Kolodjashnij and Jarrad Jansen had earned their chance to impress. Former Gold Coast Sun Josh Caddy has also had a fan- tastic pre-season that showed during the Cats’ two-point win over Collingwood last week. The 29-year-old couldn’t be happier for injury-hampered teammate Hamish McIntosh after he was selected to play his first game since Round 7, 2012. McIntosh joined Geelong from the Kangaroos at the end of 2012, but did not play a game in a 2013 season ruined by knee, ankle and achilles problems. “I think he just wanted to get home safely (on Wednes- day) and stay safe until we got up to Alice Springs,” Lonergan said. “He got through training on Wednesday, obviously he’s had so many issues with his body over the years. “It will be great to see him run out there, it’s been nearly two years since he’s played. “He’ll take a lot out of the match and hopefully be right to go in Round 1.” Lonergan is wary of a quick- improving Dees outfit under new coach Paul Roos. The 2011 premiership player said the Cats were looking for- ward to a tough match and had nothing but admiration for the opposition coach. “No doubt Roosy will bring a little bit of the Sydney game plan to Melbourne and he’s a fantastic coach,” he said. “They’ve got some really good players as well who’ve had good pre-seasons.” Jordan McArdle FOOTBALL Motlop on sidelines after knee surgery THERE are no Territory-bred players in Geelong’s side to face Melbourne in Alice Springs tonight. Matthew Stokes was rested for tonight’s NAB Challenge clash, while fellow NT talent Steven Motlop is recovering from minor knee surgery. Motlop has targeted a round five return after he flew to London for surgery to cor- rect the patella tendinitis issue he carried throughout 2013. “We wanted to go straight to the best in the world, and he went in and fixed it,” Motlop said. “It’s travelling really well so, hopefully, I can come back in round five or six. “I’ve already started doing some squatting and I can’t feel the pain that I used to, so he’s obviously done a good job.” The enigmatic small for- ward – who booted a career- best 44 goals in 2013 – plans to start running again in the com- ing fortnight. “I’ve got to do some strengthening in my knee first because I’ve lost around my knee, my quad and my calf,” he said. “One I do that I’ll get into a couple of weeks of running, followed by a couple of weeks of full training, and then try and get some match fitness be- fore I return. “Not to rush it and stir it up again is the main thing.” Motlop looked on the bright side of his disappointing injury and feels that it could be a chance for an emerging player to step up. “It gives an opportunity for younger guys like Lincoln Mc- Carthy to come in,” he said. “I think the fans want to see these younger guys, because they haven’t had the oppor- tunity to see them.” Melbourne’s Dom Barry, originally from Central Aus- tralia Football League side Federal, is the lone NT player involved in the match. Selwood joins raft of stars as Cats eye up clash with Crows GEELONG skipper Joel Sel- wood headlines an exciting list of inclusions for his side’s NAB Challenge clash with Mel- bourne at TIO Traeger Park Oval in Alice Springs tonight. The triple-premiership mid- fielder was included in the Cats’ 29-man squad and will appear in his first match for 2014 after having minor foot surgery last month. As predicted by football manager Neil Balme, the Cats have sent a strong side to the Red Centre in preparation for their round-one date with the Adelaide Crows “We’ve only got the three (pre-season) games, so we’re trying to find out who’s going to play round one,” Balme said. However, experienced pair Andrew Mackie and Mathew Stokes have been rested. Ex-Kangaroo Hamish McIntosh will make his long- awaited debut in navy and white after being traded at the end of 2012, with the 203cm tall to take the ruck duties after Nathan Vardy’s season-ending knee injury. Stars Jimmy Bartel, Steven Johnson, Tom Hawkins and James Kelly are also included, while draftees Jake Kolodjash- nij, Jarrad Jansen and Nick Bourke will all get their chance to impress. Alice Springs football fans won’t get to see exciting Dees talent Jay Kennedy-Harris, with the first-year player rest after his heroics against Rich- mond earlier this month. All eyes will be on emerging sharp-shooter Jesse Hogan, who is yet to make his senior debut for the Demons. The 19-year-old, who was drafted with pick No. 2 in the 2012 AFL National Draft, booted 39 goals for Mel- bourne’s VFL affiliate side Casey Scorpions in 2013. Melbourne small forward Shannon Byrnes will line up against his former club, while former No. 1 draft pick Jack Watts could be tried out in the midfield after showing promise during an intra-club match. Cameron Pedersen was originally in Melbourne’s squad before suffering a ham- string injury at training on Wednesday. He’ll be replaced by rookie ruckman Max King.
