GARY BOSGOED • Vice-President of Corporate Development, Waiward Steel LP

Gary Bosgoed, P.Eng. is the Vice-President of Corporate Development of Waiward Steel LP. With over thirty-three years of experience, he specializes in business development, project delivery, business advisory services and community engagement on capital projects.

Gary was President and CEO of Bosgoed Project Consultants Ltd, a management con-sulting, development management and project management company. Gary was re-

cently under contract to FT Services, a maintenance and turnaround division of AECOM, as the Vice President of Contract Development.

He was the Senior Vice-President and General Manager of the WorleyParsons Edmonton office, which consisted of over 2,300 personnel completing engineering, procurement and construction management for projects around the world. The team worked on oil & gas, mining, infrastructure and power projects in Canada and internationally. The project mix included small plant and infrastructure assignments, major and mega-projects and long term alliances.

Prior to that, Gary was the founder and President of Bosgoed Project Consultants, a western Canadian consulting engineering, project management and general contracting company. The company worked with over 100 First Na-tions and hired or sub-contracted over 400 First Nations people.

He was also founding Director of Circle Energy (CEN:TSX) a Calgary-based oil and gas exploration company and First Nations Internet Association, an internet service provider.

Mr. Bosgoed is also an active community leader, chairing the 2013 Alberta Capital Region United Way Campaign, Co-chairing the Alberta TransCanada Trail Fundraising Committee, on the Norquest College Industry Advisory Com-mittee and a Heart & Stroke Foundation door-to-door Fundraiser. He currently chairs the fundraising committee for the Young Indigenous Women Circle of Leadership (YIWCL) program at the University of Alberta, and provides advice to indigenous businesses and initiatives. He also conceived of the Saskatchewan and Alberta Aboriginal Construction Careers Programs, which have provided construction jobs to over 12,000 indigenous people. Gary is the recipient of numerous awards, including the University of Regina Distinguished Alumni Award, National Aborigi-nal Achievement Award (now Indspire) in Business and Technology and the Saskatchewan Centennial Medal.

Gary is a member of the University Of Regina Board Of Governors. He is also an adjunct professor at the University of Alberta, teaching in their Aboriginal Community Industry Relations Certificate Program.

Aaron Barner • Senior Executive Officer, Métis Nation of Alberta

Aaron Barner is a Métis man born and raised in Edmonton, where he still resides with wife Shannon and three children Charles, Isabella and Juliette. Mr. Barner’s credentials include a Business Diploma in Finance, a Bachelor of Management Degree and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration. Aaron is currently the Senior Executive Officer of the Métis Nation of Alberta (MNA). He recently oversaw the re-design of the MNA’s housing companies Métis Urban Housing Corporation and Métis Capital

Housing Corporation. Prior to the MNA Mr. Barner was a Director with the First Nations Finance Authority and a Market Analyst for John Deere.

Mr. Barner takes his role as a representative of the Métis Nation very seriously and is one of Canada’s most respected professionals working with Indigenous Communities. Aaron is a key player in pushing the Métis rights agenda forward and is committed to achieving reconciliation between the Métis Nation and the Crown. Aaron’s endearing passion for community and for what is right and just has had a positive impact on many individuals. Above all, Aaron is a family man and is committed to ensuring the Métis Culture is passed on to his children.

Elder & Keynote

(CHIEF) DR. REG CROW SHOE • Elder & former Chief of the Piikani Nation

Reg Crowshoe is a Blackfoot Cultural and Spiritual Advisor, and is the former Chief of the Piikani Nation. Reg and his late father, Joe Crowshoe, travelled extensively around the world bringing awareness and education about Blackfoot history, traditions and spirituality. In 1997, Reg developed the Blackfoot Framework for Decision-Making and Mediation Processes called Akak’stiman, and presents it widely to Corporations, Government, Aboriginal organizations and the Non-Profit sector. Akak’stiman is a Blackfoot World

View on dual paradigms; Western Thinking and Blackfoot Thinking, and how these paradigms can be integrated to best serve Aboriginal people. Reg sits on many Committees and Boards in Calgary, and commits his time to other provincial and national organizations. As the Board for Calgary 2012 concluded in March 2013, he ensured the Legacy Project for Calgary 2012 was the Making of Treaty 7 Project; a project that tells the important local history of Treaty 7.

Beginning in 2011, he played an instrumental role as the Cultural and Spiritual Advisory for the University of Calgary’s (UofC) 2011 Solar House Decathlon project which was designed to respond to First Nations housing issues, and named the solar house Spo’pi. Spo’pi is now a permanent fixture on the UofC Campus for use in research and education. Reg provides advice to Treaty 7 Management Corporation, and leads a group of Treaty 7 Elders so that they can better be a support system to members in Treaty 7.

DR. FAY FLETCHER • Associate Professor, University of Alberta

Dr. Fletcher, Associate Dean Academic and Student Affairs in the Faculty of Extension at the University of Alberta, has focused on the integration of research and teaching with the intent of making adult education more accessible, relevant, and meaningful for Indigenous learners. Teaching and research relationships with colleagues from First Nations communities and Metis Settlement and Elder mentors have informed the development and delivery of local and international adult continuing education programs as well as Aboriginal youth life skills programs.

JANICEMAKOKIS • Advisor/Educator, Yellowhead Tribal CouncilUniversity of Alberta

Janice Makokis is a proud Cree woman from the Saddle Lake Cree Nation and is the mother to her son, Atayoh Makokis. She sees herself as a servant of her people and Indigenous peoples in general. She participates in activities that help advance the struggles of self-determination, Indigenous governance and the recognition of Indigenous Treaties in Turtle Island (now called North America).

Currently, she is an advisor with Yellowhead Tribal Council and an academic instructor with the Faculty of Extension’s Indigenous programs at the University of Alberta. She has developed and taught university courses (at the undergraduate and Master’s level) on: Indigenous leadership and Indigenous treaties and governance. She holds a B.A. in Native Studies (minor Political Science) from the University of Alberta, an M.A. in Indigenous Governance from the University of Victoria and an L.L.B. (Law degree) from the University of Ottawa. She has co-authored articles and assisted in research that has been published. Her Master’s thesis was published into an article titled “Nehiyaw iskwew kiskinowâtasinahikewina - paminisowin namôya tipeyimisowin: Learning Self Determination Through the Sacred”. During law school she did a placement in International Indigenous advocacy in New York City at an NGO recognized by the United Nations.

She continues to be involved in International Indigenous advocacy work through various International bodies and United Nations mechanisms to advance the discourse on Indigenous People’s rights. She works with her people and various Nations in the area of Treaty recognition and protection, the development and implementation of Indigenous laws and land based Indigenous governance initiatives. She is thankful to her family for teaching her how to live as a nehiyaw (Cree person), to her Nation, to Indigenous knowledge holders who hold sacred teachings in trust for those who wish to learn the ways of our People.

DR.PATRICIAMAKOKISIndigenous Engagement Research Scholar, Faculty of Extension,University of Alberta • CFAR Board Member

Dr. Patricia Makokis resides on Saddle Lake Cree Nation with her husband Eugene. Pat has worked as a front line educator, Vice Principal, Principal, and most recently in Business Development with industry. Pat currently works at the University of Alberta in the area of Indigenous Engagement. She has years of experience in teaching and program

development and delivery. She, and Dr. Fay Fletcher co-lead the development and the delivery of the Aboriginal Community Industry Relations Certificate (ACIR). The certificate is a partnership between the University of Alberta and CFAR and is designed to assist in building better relationships between industry, governments and Indigenous peoples. The program is team taught with Indigenous scholars and Elders and several of the courses are land based. All who work in business development on the traditional lands of Indigenous Peoples’ should consider ACIR. It is all about enhancing Indigenous Business Development. Having worked in Business Development most recently, Pat understands how critical those relationships are in understanding and working with Indigenous Nations.

Pat has developed and delivered courses and workshops (on diversity and leadership) across Canada and parts of the United States. She does facilitation work with industry. She believes in life-long learning and works with Elders, ensuring curriculum development and instruction is holistic, and incorporates Indigenous instructional methods and age old ways of knowing. She sees herself as a servant of the people and works towards a better humankind for all.

CHIEFBILLYMORIN • Chief, Enoch Cree Nation

Billy excelled academically from the beginning of his educational journey at the Kitaskinaw School at Enoch, through his Sr. High School years at St. Francis Xavier, where he achieved honor role status, graduating at the age of 15.

After graduation, he worked at the North On 60 Convenience Store and played sports until he decided, with support and encouragement from his family, to continue his education at N.A.I.T.

In 2011, Billy earned a Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology from N.A.I.T. and continued studying towards a Bachelor of Technology Management Civil Engineering Technology which he received in 2013.

Also in 2011, Billy was employed through the Alberta Summer Student Program at ATCO as Senior Forester Assistant, Engineering and Construction, Forest Operations, Supervisory and Standards in Edmonton. Since May 2012, he worked with the Government of Alberta/Ministry of Aboriginal Relations in the intern At Your Alberta program.

Billy was honored with the Aboriginal Role Models of Alberta Youth & Academic Award in October 2012. In 2013, at the age of 26, he ran for Enoch Cree Nation leadership and won a seat on Council. In June 2015, Billy was elected Chief of the Enoch Cree Nation.

Billy is a true role model for all people; young and old. He is active in traditional and cultural celebrations in the community. He has proven his ability to lead, doing this by example and always encouraging young people to get involved in the community and outside the boundaries of the Enoch Cree Nation.

Elder

IRENEMORIN • Elder, (Retired) Director of Operations, Enoch Cree Nation

Irene Morin is an active member of the Enoch Cree Nation community. She is a residential school survivor who has recognized Blue Quills as the institution that gave her a good education foundation. Irene is a widow who raised 5 children on her own. She has worked for the past 56 years and retired a year ago. She worked for the Edmonton Separate School Board, Enoch Cree Nation, Native Counselling Services of Alberta and the Senate of Canada in Ottawa. Irene is responsible for the Annual Aboriginal Role

Models of Alberta Awards and has been doing these awards for 22 years. Even though she is officially retired, she still donates her time to causes she believes in; such as the Alberta Council of Womens Shelters and the World Indigenous Games International 2017, to name a few.

MARCELPELLETIER • Vice President of Aboriginal Community Engagement and Socio-Economic Advisor, AECOM

Boozhoo (Hello), my birth name is Marcel Pelletier and as an Anishinabe Man I was given the Spiritual name; Makata Ginew Innini (Black Eagle Man). I was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba and come from a small community called Duck Bay, Manitoba. I have spent the past 29 years here in Alberta and am grateful for the opportunities that this province has provided for my Family of which I am a husband and a Father. As AECOM’S Manager

of Aboriginal Community Engagement and Socio-Economic Advisor, my scope covers First Nation, Metis and Inuit for the western Prairie Provinces and Territories as it pertains to our Oil & Gas Division. My focus is to develop effec-tive working relationships with Aboriginal based businesses and communities. In my role I identify, coordinate and implement strategic planning with AECOM and Aboriginal based companies. While pursuing business and economic development opportunities I have the honor to meet many Leaders whom I have come to admire for their dedica-tion and passion as it pertains to their community and ultimately their Nation. My career in Oil & Gas has involved Project Management, Superintendent, QC Inspector, Material Coordinator and Document Control with involvement in Collective Bargaining Agreements, Industry Board of Directors representation, Co-Chair of Owner/Worker/Health committees just to name a few. As we move forward in our industry it’s important to recognize what Relational Lead-ership looks like and how it plays an even more important role in today’s economy. Meegwetch (Thank You)

RICHARD PICHE • Vice President of Corporate Development, Keywest

Mr. Richard Piche has an infectious level of enthusiasm that has contributed to the ongoing success of Keywest. Since joining Keywest in 2014, Richard has been integral in shaping our Projects teams while progressing into his current role: Vice President of Corporate Development.

Richard holds a Project Management Professional (PMP) designation along with over 35 years of Project, Construction, and Operations Management. His ability to motivate and build effective relationships has afforded him opportunities where he has successfully managed projects in Canada and internationally in countries such as Indonesia, Poland, India and Kuwait.

Richard is an admired advocate of the Métis Nation of Alberta, serves on the Board of Directors at the Apeetogosan (Métis) Development Inc. and Métis Entrepreneurship Fund and recently received two awards for his volunteering and support within the Métis community. Richard continues to support the Métis Nation with their pursuits in both education and economic growth initiatives. He has been instrumental in implementing the Métis employment services to Keywest Projects, supporting our efforts in diversity.

Master of Ceremonies

JOSEPHPIMLOTT • Aboriginal Friendship Centre of Calgary, Executive Director

Joseph Pimlott is of Metis heritage and was born in Comox, British Columbia, moving to Calgary in 1987; his Metis Lineage originates from St. Boniface, Manitoba. He is a father of 3 wonderful children and Grandfather to one. Joseph had worked within the homeless sector in Calgary beginning in 2002 until 2007, where he worked at the Mustard Seed. He decided to take the Events Management Program in 2007 at Bow Valley College and immediately after graduating he was hired by the Metis Nation of Alberta Region 3 in

2008 as the Events Coordinator In 2011 Joseph ran for Region 3 Vice President with the Metis Nation of Alberta and won. Following that in 2014 Joseph ran for Provincial Vice President and was successful. Now Joseph is the Executive Director at the Aboriginal Friendship Centre of Calgary, working with community partners to help make a difference one person at a time. Joseph was featured in the November 2016 edition of MacLean’s Magazine in the College All Stars section and Aboriginal Role Model Award of Alberta Recipient of 2016 in Volunteerism.

Audrey Poitras • President, Métis Nation of Alberta

Métis Nation of Alberta (MNA) President, Audrey Poitras, is one of the highest profile Métis women in Canada. Audrey’s career in Métis politics began in 1996 when she was elected to lead the Métis Nation of Alberta as its first female President. From Métis identity to Métis rights and recognition, Audrey remains a key figure among Canada’s political leaders.

Under her leadership, the MNA continues to be a model of success in representing and pursuing the social, political, and economic interests of the Métis people in Alberta. The credibility of the MNA continues to increase, as evidenced by activities over the past 20 years with Audrey Poitras at the helm, where the legitimacy and accountability of the MNA has risen to unprecedented heights

MELANIESOLER • Associate Vice President, Disaster Management in AlbertaCanadian Red Cross

Melanie Soler is the Associate Vice President of Disaster Management in Alberta for the Canadian Red Cross.

Melanie holds a degree in civil engineering and chose to embark upon a career path in the non-profit sector when she joined the Canadian Red Cross in 1999. Over the past 17 years, Melanie has worked in a variety of different roles within the Red Cross including

information technology, operations management, logistics, procurement and disaster management.

Melanie’s disaster management portfolio includes some of the largest domestic and international disasters in recent times; including the largest natural disaster in Canadian history – the 2013 southern Alberta floods – where she is the director for the Red Cross flood operations. And now, with the recent fires in Fort McMurray and its surrounding area, Melanie will serve as the lead for the Alberta wildfires recovery operation for the Canadian Red Cross.

When she’s not busy working on disasters, Melanie enjoys running, skiing, mountain biking, hiking, watching football, and baking cookies with her kids.

ED STANDINGHORNDirector, Industry Relations, Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs

Director of Industry Relations for The Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs (BATC). Married with 4 children and reside on the Sweetgrass First Nation. Since coming on to join BATC 3 years ago his team successfully placed 1020 clients into the oil and gas industry job market. As a result, BATC has been invited to share their formula for success from all walks of government. Ed’s passion and commitment to get the BATC members employed is second to none.

JONATHANSTRINGERGeneral Manager, Aboriginal Relations, Black Diamond Group

Born in Iqaluit, NU Jonathan has grown up living from coast to coast to coast across Canada. Professionally, he has been lucky enough to work in a variety of different roles which have included working in the non-profit, governmental and for-profit industries. He brings this well rounded background to his current role with Black Diamond where he is responsible for building and maintaining positive relationships with the communities

that surround Black Diamond and their operations. Prior to Black Diamond Jonathan spent 4 years working with Aramark Remote Workplace Services in the position of Director, Aboriginal Relations. In addition to Chairing CFAR’s Sponsorship Committee and serving on the Board of Directors, Jonathan is currently working toward acquiring his Citation in Indigenous Community-Industry Relations from the University of Alberta Faculty of Extension. Married, he is the proud father of two (Oliver and Penelope) young children. Jonathan enjoys nothing more than the time he gets to spend with his young family.
