Note to Mom
Hi Mom! Thanks for downloading my Literature Unit. I wrote this book study for
the child. He or she should be able to work on it almost independently. There are
few things I need you to do.
Supplies:
1 Pumpkin
1 Bible (the version of your family’s choice)
Carving Knife (to cut the top of the pumpkin off)
1 copy of “How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin?” (check the library)
2 Bowls (1 for the pulp and 1 for seeds)
Spoons or ice cream scooper (help with cleaning the pulp/seeds)
Cookie sheet (something long enough for the seeds to dry on)
Your child will need 1 pumpkin. The size does not matter. If you have more than 1
child; 1 pumpkin will still suffice. But consider a larger size the more children you
have completing the unit study. The size of the bowls should be paired to the size
of the pumpkin you choose. On Day 3, your child will need your help drying seeds.
You can set them in the oven, sit them outside in the sun, or let them air dry on
the counter overnight. You will also need to cut the top of the pumpkin for your
child. It may be best to have the kitchen trash can empty and close by for easy
disposal.
The symbols in this study are very helpful to you and your child. Here are
there meanings:
Day 1: Pre-Reading
Before begin reading, let’s label our book. Write the words on the
correct line. Here’s your word bank:
Front cover Title
Back cover Illustrator
Author Spine
Day 1 (Continued): Book Hunt
Pre-Reading Hunt
Look through your book, and answer the following questions. Write “n/a” for any information the book does not provide.
Title: Author:
# of chapters: # of pages:
Illustrations?
Y or N
Copyright Date (©):
How old is the book? Illustrator:
Tip: To figure out how old the book is, subtract the copyright year from the
current year.
Note: Turn to the last page of your book. See Charlie’s Pumpkin Facts? You
will keep a log of your pumpkin facts too. Each day you will add 1 new fact.
Don’t worry; I will remind you. “Your Pumpkin Facts”Log is on the last page
of this unit study. Each time you see the red pumpkin, you will know to add
a fact.
That’s it for Day 1. See you tomorrow!
Day 2: Reading Pages 1-10
Hi! Are you ready to read? I hope you are; but before we begin let’s start thinking!
What do you think about when you hear the words
“autumn” or “fall?”
“How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin?” does not have page numbers listed in the
book. This means you will have to manually count. I lightly penciled in the page numbers
in my book so I could keep track. Ask your parent if you can do that.
Read pages 1-10 right now. You can read silently if you like or maybe you
want to read out loud to a younger sibling. It’s your choice.
Turn to page 1. Point to Charlie. How do you know that is him?
(You can read the paragraph on page 1 if you need help.)
In your reading today, there was a lot of talk about seeds. Let’s read God’s
Word to find out what He says about seeds.
Read Matthew 13:24.
Copy Matthew 13:24 in the space below. If you know how to write in cursive,
try that!

Day 3: Reading Pages 11-16
Hi! Are you ready to read? I hope you are; but before you begin let’s start thinking!
(You also have an activity to complete before you read today.)
Guess how many seeds are in your pumpkin.
______________________
Your mom or dad should already have a pumpkin, a bowl, and a spoon
or an ice cream scooper ready for you today. Have an adult cut the top
of your pumpkin. Use a spoon or an ice cream scooper to remove the
seeds and the pulp. Discard the pulp. Wash off your seeds and place
them in a bowl.
Read pages 11-16 right now. You can read silently if you like or maybe
you want to read out loud to a younger sibling. It’s your choice.
Think about the best way to count your seeds. Ones? Twos? Fives?
Tens?
Whichever way you decided, practice counting by that number today.
Note: Ask your mom to dry your seeds this evening. You will need
them tomorrow.
Read Psalm 51:10
In your activity today, you cleaned your pumpkin. As a Christian, you
should present a clean heart unto the Lord. Did you clean your
pumpkin well today? Is all the pulp and slime out? It should look like
this:
Is your heart clean like your pumpkin is? Do you have slime you need
to get out? If so, let’s do that right now!
Pray…
Father, forgive me for __________________________.
I want my heart clean for You. Just like David prayed, God create in
me a clean heart for You. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
Copy Psalm 51:10 in the space below. If you know how to write in
cursive, try that!

Day 4: Reading Pages 17-24
Hi! Are you ready to read? I hope you are; but before you begin let’s start thinking!
How do you divide a number in half?
___________________________________________________
Read pages 17-24 right now. You can read silently if you like or maybe you
want to read out loud to a younger sibling. It’s your choice.
Look on page 19. The Two’s Club has 170 pairs of seeds. How many single
seeds is that? _____________________
What operation do you use to answer the question? _____________
Look on page 21. The Ten’s Club has 35 groups of 10. How many seeds is that?
___________ Can you count by 10s 35 times?
Think about the best way you chose to count seeds. Do
you still think it’s the best way? Do you want to change
your original plan?
Your mom or dad should have your dried seeds today. Get your bowl of
dried seeds and group them together on a cookie sheet by how you want to
count them. But wait and count them tomorrow.
Did you know that pumpkins grow on a vine? Who takes care of a garden or
a pumpkin patch? ___________________
Read John 15:1 to learn more about the Master Gardener.
Day 4 (continued): Reading Pages 17-24

Day 5: Reading Pages 25-end
Hi! Are you ready to read? I hope you are; but before you begin let’s start thinking!
Does the biggest pumpkin have the most seeds?
_______________________
Why would that seem likely?
____________________________________________________
____________________________________________________
Count your seeds today. How many do you have? ______________
Look back at Day 3. How many seeds did you guess? ___________
Subtract the difference and your record your answer. ____________
You did a lot of counting today! I want to tell you a Bible verse where God
says He does not count. You have to count in this life and there are many
times in Scripture where God even counts. He counts your days, He numbers
the hair on your head, and He counts the stars in the sky, just to name a few.
Read 2 Corinthians 5:18-20. The one thing God does not count is your
sin. That is great news! If you have trusted Jesus, He has reconciled
your sins for you.
Copy the following sentences:
If I have trusted Jesus Christ as my Savior, He reconciles my sins with
God. They do not count against me and that’s a true fact!
You’ve made it to end of Day 5! I hope you had a good time
learning more about God and the fall harvest of pumpkins!
