NEWSLETTER DONATIONS ENVELOPE COLLECTION

Thank you to all those of you who have already made donations to help with the cost of running the Newsletter. Don’t forget if you have not donated and you wish to do so you can hand your envelope to any Committee member or put it through my door 12 Coombe Lane. The running of The Newsletter depends on the money received from advertisers, donations from The Parish Council, The Parochial Church Council and other generous bodies in Enford plus each and every donation from the household in our Parish. This year we are also trying to raise money at The Village Fete. As from next month The Newsletter will be printed in A5 format which will not only save on the cost of printing but also reduce the amount of paper that we use. If you would prefer just to read the Newsletter online please do let us know by emailing me [email protected] . Tanya Becker Chair

FAREWELL TO COLIN AND ANDREA FOX

It is with a great sense of loss that the parish of Enford has to bid farewell to the Reverend Colin Fox and his wife Andrea after their eight years service to the community. Colin’s humanity, sense of humour and spiritual leadership together with his gift of friendship has been appreciated by everyone in the parish. His support for families and individuals at times of per-sonal crises has been immense; he has always made himself available to help whatever the occasion, no matter what the cost to himself. His love of country life and its pursuits, together with his earlier service in the Royal Green Jackets, made him an ideal priest for the Avon Valley and he has worked tirelessly, together with Andrea, to maintain and improve the community life of the church both here and in the other six parishes in the Benefice. They leave with our thanks and appreciation of all that they have given to Enford over the past years and we wish them a long, healthy and happy retirement in Teffont – they will be much missed.

ENFORD TELEPHONE DIRECTORY 2011

WE WERE HOPING TO HAVE COMPLETED THE ENFORD TELEPHONE DIRECTORY BY THE END OF

JUNE READY FOR ITS DISTRIBUTION EARLY IN JULY. UNFORTUANTELY WE HAVE HAD VERY

LITTLE RESPONSE TO THE REQUEST FOR NOTIFICATION OF ANY CHANGES OR UPDATES TO THE

DIRECTORY.

PLEASE CAN YOU LET US KNOW IF YOU HAVE MOVED TO THE PARISH IN THE LAST 2 YEARS, OR IF

ANY OF YOUR DETAILS HAVE CHANGED SO THAT WE CAN DO OUR BEST TO MAKE SURE THAT THE

INFORMATION IN THE DIRECTORY IS CORRECT.

IF YOU COULD DO THIS BY THE END OF JULY WE WOULD BE VERY GRATEFUL.

FAREWELL TO COLIN FOX FROM THE NEWSLETTER COMMITTEE

As Colin Fox and his wife Andrea, leave us for their new home and new life in Teffont, we will be left with very fond memories of a warm, kind, generous man who has cared for the people in this Parish for 15 years. Many of our lives will have been touched by his gentle spirit and his strong support when times were difficult and a helpful hand was needed to see the path forward. We will also remember him for his humour, his friendliness and his ability to generate great happiness. So we wish good luck to both Colin and Andrea. Teffont doesn’t know it yet but it is a very lucky village.

LOCAL POLICING

I have taken a report about the use of plaits in horse theft preparations: “Owners need to be keeping an eye out for evidence of their horses being marked by the thieves. They do this in advance of the actual theft by twisting 1 or 2 sections of the mane and then tying it securely with a couple of knots. This makes it easier for the rest of the thieves to come back at night and determine which horses are to be taken. To some it would look like the animal just had a tangled mane but the knots give it away. They favour coloured horses/ponies Piebalds and Skewbalds. They also favour cobs which are a heavier sturdier breed. Sometimes they mark buildings like stables and tack rooms so when they come back at night to commit the crimes they know exactly where to go. Owners may also notice that their horses are slightly spooked and may have sweated up due to strangers hanging around or trying to approach them in their fields.” In two local cases this month the plaits were found and removed, the horses were moved and the thefts were thwarted. As the price of metal remains buoyant, so thefts of metal continue. If you can, lock all metals away, or keep them away from public scrutiny. The money that the thief makes from the stolen metal is often a tiny sum in comparison with the inconvenience and cost of repairing the damage caused when the thief takes the metal. Nothing is spared, a Victorian mission hall bell was recently stolen from Netheravon, it will probably be melted down. I remember my sense of outrage in Iraq, when I saw a line of upended electricity pylons in a useless row in the desert; they had been pulled down by thieves stealing copper. The result of this action was that several villages suffered power cuts, causing a problem that took several years to rectify. Incidents have included unsupervised dogs going for a dog on a lead, causing distress to the smaller victim dog, and hare coursers charging through crops, oblivious to the damage caused I hope to see you at the Fete shortly. THE NATIONAL GARDENS SCHEME Gardens Open For Charity

www.ngs.org.uk

Every year NGS gardens across England and Wales welcome over half a million visitors. Most gardens which open for the NGS are privately owned and open just a few times each

year. Some gardens open as part of a group with the whole community involved.

You can find out which gardens are open in the area by visiting www.ngs.org.uk or by

picking up a copy of Wiltshire Gardens in most garden centres.

On a wet and cold evening the Garden Club had a lovely visit to Longstreet House garden and were shown round by Jenny Scott Dalgleish and Carol Davies. All the borders were a riot of colour and the roses were perfection. The planting in the new walled garden looked very mature and everyone was surprised it was only three years old. A lot of questions received helpful answers and some people were very busy with pen and paper.

It was a very happy and instructive evening and of course gardeners are not deterred by weather, 28 people attended.

ALL SAINTS ENFORD CHURCH The Vicarage Netheravon

01980 670326

For the Monthly Magazine

July 2011 Dear Friends,

This is the last letter I shall write as Andrea and I move house into retirement in the middle of August. My last Sunday service will be on 31st July at 10.30am in Netheravon Church to which you are all very welcome. Saying goodbye is always difficult especially as we leave with so many happy memories after eight years. I am reminded of Bob Hope’s song “Thanks for the Memories” which expresses much of the sentiment I feel. As we go we are leaving behind some very good friends and happy thoughts of some real characters that make up our different villages in the valley. Looking back we have had a lot of fun which I believe to be a very important part of priestly ministry. I have always felt that the Christian religion encompasses a wide community of people and that sometimes the Church has been guilty of creating a “Holy Huddle.” A great deal of thought and care is going into finding my replacement and I hope it will not be long before The Vicarage is occupied once more. As I leave The Rev’d Mark Zammit has become the Team Rector of the newly formed Avon River Team which now in-cludes 7 villages, adding Durrington to the Avon Valley Benefice. Ministry will continue under his capable direction, ably sup-ported by The Rev’d Ann Keating, The Rev’d Rachel Bussey and Tina Draycott (who will be ordained in October) the two Licensed Lay Ministers (Chrysogon and Christine) and the many Lay Pastoral Assistants and Churchwardens. I feel confident that I leave behind welcoming and friendly churches, all of whom have changed in some way or another - some structurally with new loos and kitchenettes, others with new lighting and more space to move freely around the church, enabling a more relaxed form of worship. How fortunate we are to live in this part of England with its wide-open spaces and such good people to make the villages what they are. I finish with some words of St. Paul, writing 2,000 years ago to the Philippians (in what is now part of Greece): “And now my friends, all that is true, all that is loveable and gracious, whatever is excellent and admirable fill all your thoughts with these things.” These words sum up how much I feel we should fix our thoughts on the noble, the just, the pure, the loveable, the gracious – whatever is excellent and admirable. It is true that the way we think makes us the people we are. May God’s blessing be with you all. Colin Fox
